Don’t know if you did it or not, but when you’re using the voltage tester, always check a power supply that you know has power first. This will ensure your tester is working properly before you’re using it on what you are working on.

You could use the cap that was taken off then trace the brass part then cut a hole on the cap then screw it on with the two screws. Or you can buy a ceiling medallion at lowes/home depot

Maybe put the plastic cover back drill some holes in it to aline with the light so the screws can go throw it when you get the right size screws
My OCD could never it would drive me insane its so beautiful though tiff.
All you need is an open cover over the hole its like an extension that will cover most of the hole and the cape for the light base screws through it to the interior screw holes... .or you can add dry wall and some putty or plaster pending what was used to shrink the hole a bit then sand and paint to may it look cleaner. I prefer the second one but the easier way may be cheaper and less time consuming.

I'm sure you can find a nice larger circular dish drill some holes and that would cover the Ring and you then put the lamp cover over it and then the right size screws.
You might be able to find a ceiling canopy kit that’ll help

You should always test your power tester with something that has power to be sure it's working. Also I can't believe that black wire was just sitting there uncapped since new.
