I also started a ranger when I started playing a couple of weeks after launch, in 2004. I remember 'ranja down' and the sheer joy of getting my first hunter of gnolls title. I've tried other classes but it's always been my favorite. I haven't played since 2021 but your vids are giving me the itch to check it out again.
I just downloaded this game to try again. I've not played it since I was a child a long long time ago. Back then I had this habit of making a character and spending hours upon hours on what I called the "Tutorial Island" until I had exhausted every possible available thing for me to do, then I would travel off the Island to either of the main cities, immediately become overwhelmed and then restart the process all over again. I had so much fun making different characters and just replaying that tutorial that it kind of amazes me thinking back on it. Growing up this was also my mother's favorite game. Hearing her from the other room go "Sparkly!" In excitement always made me laugh and watching her decorate her housing areas was fun. It'll be very interesting to see just how much has changed from my memories though it'll be hard to compare since I never really did much past the tutorial and I don't think that Island exists anymore unfortunately.
Ahhh the memories. Good 20 years of my life dedicated to EQ and EQ2 with some breaks/college. Played on Nagafen for years, started the first day it was up. Beserker Rottk and Coercer Sloopy. Fought in PvP or just goofed off more than anything. So many great memories. Probably played each class up to the 20s due to alt-itus
i watched a video that made me want to start the game. I started just three days ago and it's fun so far. i made a ratonga shadow knight. thank u for making this video because i dont think i could convince any of my friends to play.
My first character in EQ2 was a Guardian. I remeber if you could get your Def 5 levels higher you could solo 3 level above you Heroics (Vanilla game when the cap was 50 before Xpacs) I discovered the SK and it was a game changer. I agree on the Necro, mine does amazing damage and I use the Scout pet. I have not played the Warden much but did get into the Fury (I actually use mine to PL low level toons sometimes) and love it more then the other healers (Just personal preference). For some reason I got into the Dirge and while the Dps is not the best I enjoy the class a lot. I was surprised how well the Brigand plays and enjoy being able to toggle Def stance and being beefier or going all out Dps. Good video.
My first toon was a defiler with my older brother, started playing at the tail end of desert of flames and kept on playing till Shadow Odessey. Just came back last year and glad that i did but wish i did sooner! - Adder from Maj'Dul
I'm a big fan of Necromancers. I started EQ1 in the alpha testing phase (not beta), and it was a blast. I ended up being forced from the Pally class because the lag in game made it impossible to be at the right range to kill a fleeing mob, so DOT and pet fixed that for me. Not a lot of people liked grouping in the 10-20 level range with Necromancers because our damage took time to build up, and our two wizards were off on their own and I was told to just level up on my own. I was at 16, they were at 22, so I ignored groups and learned to solo on my necro. Agro kiting, fear kiting, root rotting. I quickly mastered each. All the sudden those two wizards were not happy with me when they realized they were only up from 22-27, where I'd gone from 16 to 32. They actually wanted me to slow down leveling and let them catch up, although they wouldn't do that for me. Great friends...(NOT). In EQ1, a Necromancer can solo better than any. I still fondly recall the two druids in (I think) the common lands by the portal. Great solo XP for a necro, and how pissed people got when they tried to heal the druid and they could not keep up with my DPS. About to get back into EQ2. Next step I guess is to see if I can recover my old account. Thanks for the video. I'll likely go back to the necro, although in EQ2, people really loved me as a templar. Long ago though. If you like, I could tell you some fun experiences alpha testing EQ back in 1999.
@@Renfail Some funny things from Alpha. There were the typical glitches to work out, but city guards didn't allow PvP near them, so hitting someone or casting spells on players meant the guards attacked. So, if you even cast a buff spell on yourself, the guards would come kill you. Fish, sharks, and things that should stay in the water would chase you across land. Damage shields that harmed those that hit you...if you and your opponent both had these, each would instantly proc on the damage done by the other DS for a nearly insta-death loop of procs. You couldn't drag a corpse. If you couldn't get to your corpse, you'd have to trust someone to loot your corpse and bring your stuff back to you. And they had a default set of attacks across mobs, until they realized they had snakes kicking, and found it so funny they left it in game. Quest mobs didn't have all their chat. You'd click on an NPC and get something like "Response for quest ABC step 3". And long after the game was out and the Planes of Power raids were common, they screwed up a script and when people were fighting one raid boss, it would agro another from across the zone. Only 2 guilds beat both bosses at the same time like this. An uber high end raiding guild, and our guild. The uber guild would run raids for epic weapons with 6 man groups (pissed everybody off LOL). We didn't have great gear, and we expected to wipe, but pre-planning worked out and we were able to take down both. Everybody else was too scared. It wasn't the most fun role, but I was happy for my necro to be a mana battery for the healers in that raid.
My first toon was a Kerran Ranger. I left the game when they changed the crafting mechanic, but to this day I look back with nostalgia. My first experience of note was on n00b island, where I decided to attack a crab. One problem though: Not only did I not equip a weapon, I didn't know that you HAD to; nor did I know how! Needless to say, the crab used my pelt for a rug. When I respawned, I broke out the book that came with the game, and learned how to equip a weapon. I then spent the next several hours earning the title Destroyer of Crabs! (too bad that title doesn't exist) The ability to kite MOBs around and plink at them with my bow was kinda fun, but I always had a bit of trouble with crowd control.
@@cc66bb44 BL's just get 2 stances - feral and spiritual - and each get a respective set of advantages you can use (abilities that generate savagery). They both also have a set of respective primals (abilities that spend savagery), however the primals that you have access to depend on the pets that you have grandmastered (there is of course a generic/base set). Feral is all damage, and spiritual can provide some healing and buffs along with solid group power regen. I have no idea how they pair up in the endgame these days, but when I was last clued in they were probably the most variable dps class; ie, if you had all the "things" and knew how to play, they were solid T1.5 (T1 being only summoner and ranger), but if you didn't, their dps was pretty meh. Or in other words, they're a hard class to get to max level and immediately play without investing a lot of time into them. Regardless though, they are most definitely not the best solo class xD. Ironically they might be decent soloers in the endgame on live, but outside of that they're worse than any healer, pally/sk, coercer/illu, and ranger. Their warder/pet doesn't have any taunt effects, and the healing in spiritual isn't enough to solo heal through difficult content (this mostly applies to TLE). Even in situations where you can, you lose out on sooooo much damage, and that difficult boss/zone you're trying to solo becomes incredibly long. It's also a mark against them that they have very little aoe potential in spiritual, which is a large part of being an effective and efficient solo class. They're still fun to play though, and definitely a unique class in the game.
i don't remember what it was called and i haven't played in ages so idunno if it's been nerfed but there was an alternate advancement perk kinda deep into the necro tree that made one of your spells heal your pet a huge amount soloing with my necro at the time (i remember playing it a lot during rise of Kunark) was actually insane, i felt unstoppable lmao
Going to Playing EQ 2 origins this weekend. What class would be the best to solo content with because their are no mercs. I plan on grouping but im starting fresh and don't want to be hindered when first playing and not getting into groups in the beginning. I wont be playing with friends so I'll be on my own for a bit.
@@Renfail wait, what?? How long ago did THAT change? I played my ranger solo up to about lvl 30 (not counting the occasional grouping to tackle a dungeon).

I remember I was playing a warden and use to fight a ranger called "ohnoes itsaranger". I once took out a x2 raid solo with my warden. The warden actually rose in popularity after I continually boasted about it on the forms!
@@Zamiroh I remember Ohnoes lol. My favourite kill was during an Onyx raid on an avatar in Antonica. The avatar is right next to the top of a cliff, and Onyx had a full x4 on it, with a blocking x2 to protect them from PVP. I was on my Bruiser, one of very few on the server. He had an ability called sonic punch that would attack the target, then teleport you back to where you were a few seconds later. It had a range of something like 75m and was classed as a melee attack. I also had a PVP item called boomerang bandolier, which doubled melee attack range for a few seconds. Combined with this was an ability called 'drag', which forced the target to target you, and follow you for a few seconds. So I targeted Onyx's main tank on the avatar from 150m away. Then I hit sonic punch, teleported into their main tank, then hit drag and forced him to target me, and then jumped off the cliff with him right behind me. I then got teleported back to where I started, and watched the avatar wreck the entire x4 while I was laughing my ass off with guildies in chat. I did this a few times, and they were forced to call the raid off eventually lol.
@johnbull1568 lol that is awesome! Yep I do recall those bruiser abilities. I always loved playing non meta classes, which is why I focused on warden, but I played bruiser some too. I think I recall that guild as well. I don't recall a ton, but believe I remember onyx and rat pack!
I have been playing paladin since launch and the aoe is crazy. I'm playing the Lore and Legend Drakkel server now and rolled a Troubador. Been playing it since launch and now have regrets. Surprised Daybreak doesn't have a class change token.
Oh, nice! Pallies are an amazingly well rounded class (= Typical on Kael). Ironically though (unless this has since been changed) bard's Victorious Concerto is the most broken ability on Kael atm. If you can get to a certain charge threshold, you will be able to 1ko or 2ko any of the raid bosses due to the scaling and the god buff. Troubies are the best too because of their 30s damage immunity ability (idr what it's called, but it's from aa's). I stepped away from the game shortly after that change, but it sent bards from the bottom to the top of the "best class to solo all of the achievements" meta list xD.
I started playing EQ2 when it came out also. My 1st toon was a Wizard, I still have that wizard but do not play them anymore. My next major toon was a Fury and I raided with my Fury but my Fury is now on the side lines. I also raided with a Troub. But now I raid with a Dirge (guild requested, prefer Troub) and a Mystic. With our guild the way it is now I am raiding my Mystic. I really do not like soloing with my Mystic, their DPS sucks. I am not a tank type but I do have a SK and a Monk.
As Renfail said Wardens did not get all those good DPS until Higher levels. I assume if the TLE server is high level then those neat spells would come available when you level up. But I do not play TLE so I do not know.
As long as the TLE is on the Echoes of Faydwer expansion (or beyond), the melee healers - warden, inquisitor, and mystic - are great classes to solo with as a new player on the TLE. The main reason for this is because of the melee skill conversion in their class specific aa tree. If you spend 5 points on an ability, you will effectively get a melee version of it that does damage comparable to that spell being expert level, giving you the ability to do respectable damage without needing to have the money or the crafting to upgrade your spells. You'll also have innate survivability as a healer which can help if you're trying to solo harder stuff in only quested gear. These days though, if you're somewhat of an experienced player, the TLE solo-powerhouses are always necro, shadowknight, and illusionist throughout all the expansions.
We don't have an active guild, just as an FYI :) But the Antonia Bayle server. There are others with better new player populations so make sure to check out which one you think will work best for you!
@@Renfail I started on Varsoon because it supposed to be more active and a better place to learn the game. Well sounds like we need to start an active guild and learn raids eventually lol
Yes the warden is best ... but not cuz of the mele dps . I soloed with warden and the roots before the mele showed up. The only mele I use now days is the AOE ... which is good ... but it is a pale comparison to Infusion and the group beneficial spells + dmg it can do. Which I don't know if a fury would take infusion ... but Warden for sure.
oh wait ... infusion is not for solo ... but I would never trade it for something else. Cuz doing dmg while healing is just to fooken cool . Sorry ya I'm a druid ... have no plan to play anything else ... albeit I did play a coercer once .
No idea if you will actually see this, but I wanted to say it did make me a little sad to see you don't even have channeler unlocked to be able to give an opinion on that. I use to main warden (I've played everything so my opinion comes down to actual playstyle and ability to solo without a merc because I am selfish and refuse to share plat and xp with those slackers) and they are amazing soloers. That being said, I can do anything on my channeler completely solo better than I can on any other class. Part of that comes down to pure time and effort put in, because I will say it was a rough start for me when channelers came out, but it's my go to class for anything I want to do. As a side note, I tried to play my ranger the other day and just got turned into a smear on the wall lmao.
@@Renfail well in eq1 you could solo by kiting. eq2 you can't I could play a bard, druid, or Necro with speed boots and keep mobs snared while dotting and nuking them eq2 has some quirking snare thing where mobs can always hit you
My first was a dirge.. I loved that class, it was my first class to hit 90.. Then I switched to a swash that class 3:59 my true love. I used to make alot ove money, evacing people or sneaking people through zones. Before the put the griffon towers up, I was raking in money.. I hated those towers after that, but I really like the replica tower house item you got for helping to make them.
I'm slowly recovering from old scars and considering returning to eq2. I was one of the world's best raid tanks. I knew all of the Hidden resistances and even a couple exploits. The first expansion came out. It was a lot of fun. Then the second expansion came out. Old equipment meant nothing, my 10 hour a day playtime resulted in me being a piece of shit that was replaced by a real nice guy who happened to be retired and average 12 hours... all the flaws and grouping all the flaws within every aspect of the game just tore my mind apart
@@Renfail C'mon lol. Paladin in eq2 was 50% tank 25% healer and 25% mage. Was a jack of all trades but master of none, with the right gear you never needed a group. One of the best eq2 pvp players iv ever met was a Paladin ( Elwin on Nagafen ) I watched that guy solo literally an entire zone of players by himself. Dude was on exile faction, max lvl, he walked into QH one day and just stood there in front of the bank in front of like 80 - 100 players, many of them maxed out as well. His presence alone formed an even bigger crowd and a raid of lvl 80s formed over the coarse of like 10 min. Everyone knew what was going to go down, they were going to attack Elwin. I waited for them to attack, thats when agrro would be tags for anyone who hit him. This guy had the WHOLE DAMN zone try to jump him, including me. Bro, I died within like the first 30 seconds after my first two casts, turns out his fkin class specific breast plate proced and one shot me, then i sat their on the ground taking a dirt nap while i watch in awe as he slaughtered like 100 people, and his health never dropped below 50%. Dude was a fkin monster, he was the best damn player i ever saw, best Paladin i ever saw lol.

Shadowknight counters the Paladin as they are technically anti-paladins which is the generic term. Pallies get lay on hands, SKs get harm touch to take those HP away again.
I really loved this game until they added pay 2 win elements into the game. I've played many other mmos and this was my favorite. Thanks to SOE, Daybreak or whoever ruined it with a cash shop. @@Renfail We just hit some H3s today.
I remember the CoE era when mystics could solo heal dungeons while simultaneously competing with the T2 dps...those were the days :D
@@the1only1witness Could solo heal now if not for all the cures. The amount of cures required is crazy.
Lost track a little on the priests section, as I'm a new player. Is warden a good option for soloing on TLE servers? Thank you for the video.
This guide is not for TLE servers, so I can't speak to that here.
What server do you play on? I want to join a active guild, im a newb at this game though haha
Do you still play on the live servers at all?
Antonia Bayle is a live legacy server and it's where all my main toons are; but no, I'm not actively playing in 2024.
I play Ranger & Necro. Solo most of the time. (No one wants to group apparently..)
yeah you don't need groups anymore unless you are raiding at the cap. Which is only a small fraction of the playerbase.
It wasn't something I was interested in. Everyone has different ways of covering content :)
the single most factor that turned me off to the game was the snared while in combat mechanic.
Why?
@@Renfail
well in eq1 you could solo by kiting.
eq2 you can't
I could play a bard, druid, or Necro with speed boots and keep mobs snared while dotting and nuking them
eq2 has some quirking snare thing where mobs can always hit you
@@cc66bb44Just isn’t true, most mobs can only hit you in melee range and are quite easy to kite.
Never played much in EQ2 besides guardian, warlock, & inquisitor, but I definitely remember kiting being a lot less of a thing in EQ2

Old equipment meant nothing, my 10 hour a day playtime resulted in me being a piece of shit that was replaced by a real nice guy who happened to be retired and average 12 hours... all the flaws and grouping all the flaws within every aspect of the game just tore my mind apart

for some!
And yet none of what I talked about in the video had anything to do with PVP :) @@thefifthaceassociation
@@Renfail HA! Ya know, i guess you're right. My bad for trying to start a conversation. Guess I just figured id try to show some interest and add to the staggering 70 something comments you have.
I don't mind cash shops as long as they do not give a competitive advantage to cc warriors. I played dirge/troub when they because dps strong. Sk, necro, warden are fun solo classes.
There isn't any pay to win in the game. That's simply your imagination
Yes there is. It's not imagination it's fact. Trust me, I played for over a decade. You're playing a game that is irrelevant and poorly managed; try to die on another hill for a franchise that is successful.@@Renfail
