Pull Up On The Right & Reverse | 2024 UK Driving Test Manoeuvres

  • From December 2017 the UK Driving Test will include the option of a new manoeuvre called ‘Pull up on the right and reverse’. Whilst it is still recommended that we pull up on the left whenever possible, we may occasionally need to pull up on the other side of the road, so it is good to practice this manoeuvre so we are able to do so safely. First, we’ll get an overview of the manoeuvre from outside the car, before going inside to see a more detailed view from the driver’s position. If you have any questions about the video then please leave a comment and we will do our best to reply.

    * 0:52 Overview of the manoeuvre

    The demonstration makes it a lot easier than it is, obviously the driver is experienced, but for a learner taking the test this is quite a challenge especially when reversing about 2 car lengths as slight steering movement can potentially hit the kerb rather easily. I personally suggest any learner should concentrate this manuover as this is the most tricky and requires total control. Good luck every one in passing your test! Did mine in 2006 but continue to learn as it benefits me still, another great video. Thanks!

    This whole test change just to ensure the amount of teenage deaths due to road accidents decrease is ridiculous, it isn't going to change a thing. They are still going to speed when they pass their test and actual safe drivers who won't cause issues on the road are finding it harder to pass their tests.

      Like any other manoeuvre, use your indicators if they would help other people understand your intentions more clearly - but if there is no-one around then there is no need. In practice we generally indicate every time just in case there is someone we haven't spotted!

  • @Nightwatcher20
    @Nightwatcher20 6 років тому +2

    Another really helpful video! One question, though, in general and for this: if there are no cars around at all, do we still need to indicate? Apparently, for a while, it was seen as a minor indicating when there were no cars around as 'it shows that you are not really aware of your surroundings'. I'm not sure if that applies to the 2018 tests. Thanks!

    • @AdvanceDrivingSchool
      @AdvanceDrivingSchool  6 років тому +4

      We indicate for everyone, not just for cars. So if there is a pedestrian or cyclist nearby, they could benefit from knowing our intentions - so in reality its just easier to indicate every time just incase there is someone watching us. This is fine on the test btw.

    I see you advise to stop when carrying out the manoeuvre if traffic approaches from behind on the left hand side of the road. Should you also stop if traffic approaches in front on you on the side you have pulled over to (the right hand side of the road)?

    • @anthonydoyle9063
      @anthonydoyle9063 2 роки тому

      The reason I ask is that my daughter was failed on this today. She stopped on the reverse each time traffic approached to wait for the traffic to clear. There was a traffic on the road so it took a long time to complete the manoeuvre. The assessor stated that she should not have kept stopping which went against the way she had been taught by her instructor. She's now very confused on how to complete this should she get it again in a test. It's worth noting she's had this on two tests prior and she's completed it in the same way each time. There didn't seem to be an issue on the first two tests. Very confusing.

    • @AdvanceDrivingSchool
      @AdvanceDrivingSchool  2 роки тому +1

      We have always thought that it is safer to stop for any approaching traffic, as we are creating a hazardous situation. Perhaps that examiner thought that the road was wide enough that there was no need to stop. It does sound like a very harsh decision!

      We recommend looking through the rear window when reversing, but if you can use the other windows and the mirrors well then you should be able to spot any danger. Just imagine parking in a busy car park - just look wherever you need to so that there is no chance of hitting something behind you!

    Parking on the opposite side of the road in two way traffic is a DO NOT in the Highway Code. This encouragement by the DVLA, which is suposed to be setting standards, together with with their attitude to parking forward in parking bays, and their giving up on sound steering technique shows a lowering of stawndards and working to the lowest common demoninator. Pluse I believe it is still illegal to park on the opposite side of the road at night time. (unfortunabely apart from parking in a recognised parking bay. Who ever thought that one up?) No driver worth their salt will be seen to be reversing out of parking bays, nor parking on the opposite side of the road in two way traffic. The former because it is the responsibility of the driver to ensure it is clear and safe before emerging from a parking by and that can't be achieved by coming out in reverse - and the latter because, once parked the driver's position is next to the kerb and it will normally be necessary to have part of the vehicle emerge in to the traffic flow BEFORE it is possible for the driver to see whehter it is safe to emerge - so a contradiction in terms, and a potential threat to oncoming cyclists, for example. If the DVLA really want to be setting standards for safe driving behaviour they need to get their act togther.

      +Nigel ALBRIGHT We think many driving instructors share your concerns, as the new manoeuvres might legitimise poor parking. We suppose the DVSA have realised that since drivers will be doing these things anyway, they might as well be shown how to do it safely.

    • @nigelalbright9070
      @nigelalbright9070 6 років тому +3

      Thanks for your comments but, the point is these manouveres can't be done safely when exiting the positions. In both cases it is the driver's responsibility to check it is clear and safe BEFORE emerging and this criteria can not be satisfied. Additionally, the HC says that reversing out of driveways is also a DO NOT and, therefore, teaching reversing out out of parking bays condones this behaviour. You should never reverse from a minor situation into a major one and I believe this should be written into the HC.

      Further, the question for ADIs is what is their priority? Is it to teach people to pass a test or, to teach them the basics of safe driving? If the latter then ADIs as a whole will be standing up to the DVSA and saying these aspects are not acceptable.

    • @AdvanceDrivingSchool
      @AdvanceDrivingSchool  6 років тому

      +Nigel ALBRIGHT We agree with everything you are saying about the new manoeuvres, but the situation we have now is that the changes are happening, and we must teach these manoeuvres so our pupils can pass their test. Feel free to discuss your concerns directly with the DVSA!

      Thank you. Points noted. However, I feel it is up to the ADI organisations to stand up and be counted. They are, after all, the only professional cadre of driving instructors in the land. If they are not prepared to make a stand who will with any authority? And indeed the DIA should, for one, be up front on this. If it is not, then it poses other questions, in my view.

    Why do we stop reversing when cars are coming towards (from behind) us on the other side of the road? We are not on their side of the road, we’re not really influencing their driving?! Isn’t it for oncoming cars either from behind or front of our car on the same side of the road as ours that we have to stop reversing for? Thanks

    • @AdvanceDrivingSchool

      I guess it depends on how wide the road is. Since we can’t predict how much of a hazard other drivers think we are being (they might be inexperienced or nervous) we’d recommend stopping for everyone, just in case. Better safe than sorry 😉

    failed today on this maneuver
    After i reversed i put it in gear, did my checks, put the signal on and a fiesta came in front of me round the bend
    He stopped in front of me at about 10 meters, to let me go...i waited about 5 sec just to make sure he s not moving...and i drove off
    Examiner told me i failed because even though he stopped to give me way to go back into my lane, i should have cancelled the signal.. let him go on the other side of the road and pass me.. and then i should have moved off...what happened if he just waited there for 20 mins ?
