UNCUT ON PATREON 👄 Favorites - Pleasure Is All Mine, Where Is the Line, Desired Constellation, Oceania, Mouths Cradle, Triumph of a Heart Least Fav - Ancestors
Medulla is my favourite album of hers and we both picked up the same favourite tracks! (my personal absolute fav is "Where is the line" > totally crazy sh*t!!!)
Medulla, for me, marks the point in Björk’s discography where she truly becomes more experimental and avant-garde in regards to her album concepts, production, and overall creative process. If I recall correctly, her goal was to make a stripped back-album with a more folk, tribal, primitive, primordial, and familial feeling, so that’s why it consists of mostly voices/vocal singing styles (beatboxing, acapella, choir, native throat singing, poetry recitation, scatting, etc.) with the occasional instrumentation/electronic touch. Motherhood, freedom, politics, love, connection, and family are definitely themes that influenced this album! If you wanna dive into her creative process a bit more, there’s a documentary on YT called “The Inner or Deep Part of an Animal or Plant Structure” that follows Björk’s Medulla journey. She also has a podcast called Sonic Symbolism that delves deeper into the creation of her albums. The music analysis channel Mic The Snare also has a vid about Bjork and this album as well. 10/10 vid ❤ keep it up!
Mouth's Cradle is my favorite on this album. This is my interpretation but the way she sings the lyrics, especially when she says "this tooth is warmth-like" 3 times, I imagine she's like, repeating a mantra that brings her into a trance state and she sees "teeth that are a ladder up to his mouth" and the chorus and music is her being in that other mind-state. She goes in and out of the trance state from verse to chorus. When I hear this song, it sounds very old-world, prehistoric, shamanic to me.
hey i LOVE mouths cradle but can you explain what she means by "these teeth are a ladder you can climb to reach the mouths cradle" like what does that mean lol
the concept of this album is crazy. it's supposed to be "primal" music, with no instruments and simple topics in lyrics. music that could be sang by sorta tribe by a fireplace. if I'm not wrong, only one instrument on this is piano on Ancestors, and even synth on Desired Constellation is made out of voice.
this is fire i enjoyed this subscribed instantaneously who is it is my personal fav and where is the line is def one of the best, this album is so insane
If you want something else that’s fully vocals except it’s been manipulated beyond comprehension check out Beardyman’s album Distractions, dude’s an insane beatboxer in his own right but he also created a program to be able to loop and distort his vocals in real time, his live sets are just as good as his studio stuff.
This album is 100% voices, even the "bass", the beats, the weird sounds on Desired Constellation... the only sound that didn't come out of a mouth was the piano on Ancestors
Least favorite Bjork album. Ambitious, yes. I respect it. But do i return often? Is it mostly something i want to listen to? Not really. It has one or two gems.

The "cat coughing up a hair ball" on ancestors is throat singing by Tanya tagaq
This album made me a vocal nerd, and made me fall down so many vocal rabbit holes: tanya tagaq, meredith monk, diamanda galas. Bjork is genius.

Oceania is literally a song to listen to when you are at the beach 🌊

WE WON SO BAD
probably her most ecclectic and difficult album to get into her art, but if it clicks, the reward is immense.

Dude we want to see you watch it
i'm still waiting for the preachers daughter reaction😇
You have to listen this album in 5.1 SACD. That’s is fantastic
This is probably top 3 from her. Love it so muchhh all of them are good maybe not Midvikudags
mouths cradle is about breastfeeding her son Sindri lol

Day 16 of asking for "Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven" by "Godspeed You! Black Emperor"
Least favorite Bjork album. Ambitious, yes. I respect it. But do i return often? Is it mostly something i want to listen to? Not really. It has one or two gems.
