Bon Jour, Comment va tu? This is a great video!! I have thought about moving to Belgium for a year. I am older 57 years and would like to live there for the rest of my life. I am a New Yorker, so I would used to the cold.( Though I know it gets colder there. I have traveled to a few countries in Europe, Fr. Esp. I would immediately would love to learn more French and even would try Femish. I wouldn't like to live around Americans, as I feel I couldn't learn the Belgium culture. I am a non drinker and nonsmoker, so some taxes wouldn't apply to me, Lol. I am divorced with no children. I think I could be very happy in exploring my new home. All the best Shaun of NYC
Als a Belgian I can only say yes. But as a foreigner move here to retire is quiet ridiculous. It is very expensive here. Everything. Food, transportation, clothes, ... Lots of retired people live in poverty here. For instance if you have worked fulltime for 42 years in Belgium you get a pension of 1300€/month if you are lucky. A month payement in a retirement home is however about 1700€/month. So not even enough. If you have a saving account you need to use this if not you have to sell your house if you have a property. If non of these 2 and you can't pay your bill, your children have to pay for you (it's a law). And btw waffles are for tourists. I only eat them once in 10 years or so. It is not a thing here. And we never eat whipped cream, strawberries or chocolate with it. We only eat it with white sugar. Anyway we do have a nice country. So do come visit us. 😉
At around 8min25sec you say it's customary to give additional tips for service? That's actually wrong. Belgium is extremely expensive. If you wanted to learn Dutch, you should know that the Flemish pronunciation is very different from the Netherlands. But Dutch is, like English a germanic language, making it easier for English speakers to learn.
There are a lot of negative comments... the grass always looks greener ^^ I'd just say that living in Belgium is not that bad, and for people planning to retire there, they should avoid the cities, especially Brussels, Antwerp, Liege and Charleroi even though they have better amenities than small towns, towns are way quieter, cheaper and safer, and since Belgium is quite small, nothing is actually really far. I'd also recommend to first learn the local language, because outside of cities and international workplaces, you won't see many people speaking English.
I have been an erasmus exchange student in Belgium and loved it so much. I am even thinking of going back. The country is very beautiful, save, the food is amazing, people are so friendly. Brussels is beautiful, but I loved Ghent a lot more. The French part is also gorgeous and a lot cheaper. Like Namur, Dinant, Liege. The Walloons are such a lovely people, very warm and more social then the Flemish.
Waterloo cheaper than Brussels ? Where did you ear that ? Not in Belgium, obviously.. The flowers on the "Grand Place in Brussels happens only few days per year so be well informed ! And some other tips about Belgium : every city has its own special dish (yum !). there are many castles to visit and many museaums. Guided tours are quite cheap so don't hesitate. Belgian beers are also famous all around the world so taste but be careful : they are stronger than the water you are used to drink in the US ! all around the world so taste but be careful : they are stronger than the water you are used to drink in the US !
What kind of roles are sought after there and at what age can you retire with a decent monthly pension, so that you can sustain the same quality of life?
Why does this report stubbornly stick to the trodden ways? It's ok for a tourist spending a few days in Belgium but way short of what it would take for a newcomer to actually get acquainted to the country and integrate. It's just a bunch of clichés. The way you treat the food subject is just one example: as if Belgian food were nothing more than sweet treats! Belgium has a great culinary culture and the Belgians are gourmets, who care about food. It's a huge difference with the Netherlands, in that respect. On top of that, restaurants in Belgium tend to have excellent wine cards (usually French wine). In short, try to give us some real... food for thought instead of sticking to the stereotypes about Belgium.
I think it would be wise for someone who wants to live in Belgium at the retiree the first visit in Belgium for extended period of time and ask themselves the question. Do I want to feel like my life revolves in Belgium? You have to ask some serious questions what is the lifestyle you want? It’s not just Belgium. Do you feel comfortable traveling to other Shenzhen area countries on the train? Then you have to ask are you going to feel the need to visit your home country on a regular basis? It all sounds very nice comfortable, but it is a foreign country with certain traditions, and for some people with lifestyle certain limitations Keep in mind there are Europeans come on vacation to the United States so they can ride motorcycles across the wide open Prairie it into the great basin area
You forgot the most beautiful city in Belgium. Ghent!!! A original mediaeval city with a real castle, one of the most famous paintings in the word, official 3 best jazz city in the world and it has some of the best real Hand made chocolate shops of Belgium
Hi quick question, I'm in the US in Utah and want to travel to Antwerp Belgium mid September for 30 days. do I need to get the Shengren visa or can I travel on my passport alone. Thank you
I like your video. I have a radio station and a show about Belgium. I would like to air the audio of this video on my show. Is this something we can talk about? Thanks.
Im doing fine..TQ for asking.. Hope u guys are doing as great ❤️💕❤️.. ya ive been to Belgium few yrs ago. And i found the place as OK2 only (ok to be fair i went to Brussels only 😅😜) ..but IF i can choose a city in europe to stay (if cost is not a concern) , i prefer LONDON in term of diversity and activity (but not the weather) but i feel the most comfortable in Amsterdam. Hv u check the place out?
@adie dali. Those sound like great choices! No, I haven't checked them out just yet. We are preparing for going off to South East Asia again probably from September, including East Malaysia, after that, we're headed either to South America or Europe, we'll see how things go after South East Asia. Still organizing everything before we take off!

Waterloo? I don't see why this is a thing, except for some history. If you are here for history, it's the cities themselves you want to go explore. Go live by the sea if you want to retire. Like a bit more of hiking? Go to the Ardennes.

Non-German speaking Belgians prefer to forget them. That's why we gave them their own government and quite some autonomy, so they don't bother us and remind us of their presence.
