Speaking of somewhat forgotten 360 Ports of id Shooters, there is also a solid port of Quake 3 on there. It´s called Quake Arena Arcade and is also still available for purchase since it´s also backwards compatible, though Online Multiplayer is long been dead on it.
I used to have the Mein Laiben sound as a text tone. I got stopped once while working from a customer. They asked me if that was from Wolfenstein 3D. I laughed and said yes. They said it was so cool.
There are actually two versions of the Xbox 360 port: one by Activision from 2009, and the other by Bethesda from 2013, which is what you see in this video. The Activision release is no longer for sale, and the leaderboards/achievements don't carry over between versions. Speaking of the leaderboards, the top 10 is definitely not guaranteed. The current 10th place, garnettgordo11, got there within the last few months. However, before that it was myself in 2022, so it has been a while. Also, if you're wanting a score of 1,700,000+, you'll have to play episode 6 which is the most difficult one. It's easier to make the top 10 in the Activision port as it was only on sale for about 4 years so less people played it Lastly, you can move with the D pad, but you have to get a controller with reprogrammable buttons. I find it annoying to use though, because you lose all the finer movement you'd get with a control stick. However it is an option and it works for some.
I recently played through wolfenstien 3d for the first time and it was this version on Xbox one. I didn’t mind it one bit and it was pretty fun for me. Every time I see a video of the 360 port it’s always the same stuff in comment section “it’s so slow” “the music is so slow” blah blah who cares the game plays fine and it’s still fun, that’s all that should matter. Nice vid nukem 👍🏽
Everything feels slower in this version, the movement, the music, the sounds playback. It's probably not running at 60 Hz instead of 70. It's the most noticeable with the music.
I remember playing this version in I believe the Xbox port of Wolfenstein 2009. I immediately noticed that it was so slow, but I assumed it was due to the console being European and the game being American. But yeah, really not a lot of fun.
I shared your video in a Wolf3d discord! I'd heard of this, but never had my Xbox360 online. I only got it for RockBand. I played Wolf3d first on a 486 using Dos then on newer machines, finally using source ports such as EC Wolf. I've got to say that there is a good community who love this game and this content. Its been the biggest thing I've done on my own channel which sort of surprised me! If nothing, Wolf3d shows how much of a leap of features and quality of life Doom was. If there was to be a remaster and potential optional things, it could help people, eg some idea where the next objective, if you have been into a room or not. Sometimes if you haven't played a game, it can be hard, or impossible to go back to a previous techs game
I want Digital Eclipse to do a "making of" release of Wolf 3d+spear of destiny with the two original Castle Wolfenstein games from Muse Software, and also Catacomb 3D and Hovertank 3D. I think Wolf 3d by itself isnt quite as compelling as Doom, but telling the story that led to it and its impact would make for a nice package. Could include the Mac/3DO ports as well.
The item detection problem is in the original DOS game as well. Also I am noticing the music in this port is actually playing slower than it does in the original DOS version. In fact, everything is slower overall it seems.
I played the original DOS version on a 386. That said, this port looks perfectly adequate; including the expansions would have been nice. I think we're just spoiled from Nightdive and all the extra love and care they put into their ports and remasters.
@Unlucky-Noo Hope So😃!!! Im 40 years old, Doom is one of my favorite games still played today...But nothing compare to the first time i played Wolf3d, there was no other game like it! Still remember the first time i playe it! Every year i play every chapter and Spear of destiny!Would love some good port like ID did with Doom 1 y 2 recently!(Sorry my english)
The closest thing at least on switch is wolfenstein young blood, there’s an Easter egg where you can find an arcade cabinet with a wolf 3d clone. But instead of bj, you play as a nazi escaping American fortress. It has 3 episodes. Pretty fun tbh
The requirement where the player must face an item to pick it up, unfortunately, comes from the original version. I would like to have seen it removed or "fixed" in the console port since it's very awkward - and always has been.
I believe that not being able to back up over items to pick them up is a carryover from the original game. Mind you it has been a long time since I've played it, but to the best of my recollection that's how it was. One interesting mechanic in this game is that if your health gets low enough (I think it was 5% or lower), you can walk over blood pools on the ground and B.J will drink them up for a small bit of health. The reason that Doom is what became the icon of fps games over Wolfenstein 3d, is because it made just the right level of complexity and simplicity. Doom is simple enough that it's easy to get into, but there's enough complexity there in the level design to make it interesting. Wolf 3d is just simple. There's no height variations, no light variations, and the only angles allowed for the walls are 90 degrees. All of the enemies have hitscan weapons, and all of the player's weapons are hitscan as well, although certain ports added projectile weapons if I'm not mistaken, though I've never actually played any of them.
This was another port I played first before I played the original DOS release. I thought this was pretty good for its time and another means to appreciate these kinds of shooters as a kid.
I remember making diabolical maps for Wolf3D. 💪😎✌️ All to torture my floormates in college, lol. When Doom arrived, crude but clever editing programs also surfaced, and I ended up crafting two entire episodes: Darkhell & Blakhell (18 maps total). They ended up part of a CD of award-winning designs some years later. To this day, people are still streaming playthroughs of 'em. ✌️
I thought this was a pretty good port of the game. Now that you mention it though, I think it does run a little slower. Picking up items was always an issue in this game though. You can only pick them up going forward. Fun fact, the full game is inserted in one of the more recent Wolfensteins, the New Colossus, in the arcade machine in the rec room of the submarine. I don't know how many people have tried it, but yes, I went through the entire game within the game.
Totally agree that they should have a spiced up version of Wolf3D. ECWolf is a fantastic source port on PC they could buy as a base and rerelease for cheap. Would be very easy to plug wads n mods into like the recent Doom I+II collection
Such a weird port that I just couldn't continue playing strictly for the slow music. The game runs at 60hz and the turning speed is actually faster than the original, but actual movement speed does feel slower. I'm not sure if the movement speed is placebo because of faster turning and slower music, but the bottom line is that it just doesn't feel right. You're right: it's just not a brilliant port. The Sega Genesis shareware port actually feels more natural and it was obviously a much more involved development. The original Xbox version hidden within Return to Castle Wolfenstein is still the best official and semi-modern way to play the game. Source ports and hackery on PC are the next best option. Also, picking up items was never great in Wolf 3D. From my experience, you always had to be facing things somewhat to actually pick them up. I think thats an engine limitation as if items had to be in-view to register as actually existing.
I don't really echo your feelings about wanting to use the DPAD for a game like this, even coming from someone who used to play Wolf3d on keyboard in DOS back in the day. I will say I did appreciate this port on PS3 back in the day; I liked it a lot. Also, as for the release window of this game and what the intent may have been; it would make more sense for it to coincide with the release of the 2009 Wolfenstein game than other Id Software titles of the time
Is it the video compression making textures far away blurry or is that like some weird mipmap thing? But yeah this was never my thing. if I played it when it was new and little else like it existed I probably would've been impressed, and maybe had a bit of cope because it was technically impressive but maybe i would've known but not admitted to myself that the level design was rubbish. :p Doom would've quickly made me realize when that came out, assuming I had a computer at the time which could play either game.
The first Wolfenstein game i played was the original shareware on my uncle's computer, the same one who showed my brothers and I Doom for the first time soon after.
They removed the CGA red crosses from med kits. They're hearts in this version. Boo. That aside, this version is definitely a bit weird. I think when they ported it, they forgot to adjust the frame-rate for everything. It's definitely running at 60 hz when it should be running at 70, so everything's kinda slow. Speaking of the frame-rate, here's a rant: I have never liked "60 FPS" _Wolfenstein._ Growing up with 286 to 586 machines, I'm used to the movement being a little jerky. In this port, as well as most modern ports, it's simply too smooth and looks weird to me. Any time I play it in _DOSBox,_ I make sure the CPU cycles are lowered so I get that nice, _jerky_ movement. Oh, and regarding the floors, Nukem Guy… it may interest you to know that the first version of _Wolfenstein 3-D_ actually _did_ have an automap feature. It's nowhere near as nice as, say, the one in _Doom…_ It's basically the same as the _Rise of the Triad_ automap with less features and detail. (Not surprising since _RoTT_ uses an enhanced version of this game's engine.)
It's because Xbox 360 / PS3 are considered HD consoles. Otherwise eh, the music and gameplay running at half the speed though is disgusting and an absolute deal breaker
This version is long overdue for an update the music is too slow and sometimes pushing a wall in theres a delay look what happened to the previous version of Doom when it launched the music was slow and they patched it i would have loved to see spear of destiny and its two extra episodes
Haven't watched the video yet, but I hope you brought up this port runs slower (like half the speed) than it should. Same with the music being slower, very disappointing. It's a real deal breaker for me, if there's ever going to be another port for this game it needs those issues ironed out and add in a automap function just like Doom. Best console Wolfenstein I ever played was on original Xbox packaged in as unlockable content inside return to Castle Wolfenstein on Xbox.
@SneakyGreninja nope it's basically unusable for anything more than switching your weapon and I think most people agree with that. Relatively important disadvantage compared to ps3 and wii.

Ps3 version is the same. Slow music @@alexh2790

Thats bad for the performance slowness but pretty good to see you here :) Thats why you are the goats with TNG and TravGuy, you and civvie11.
yo peter can you make a video explaining the wolf3D difficulties
My probable guess and maybe this applies to the 360 port of doom that if it were to run above 30 fps it will run at 2x speeds.

You mean Night Dive Studios
