- HOW DO I USE TINKERCAD TO DESIGN 3D MODELS FOR OUR MODEL RAILWAY?
Many people have asked me about 3d files or .stl files. Here is a tutorial using Tinkercad on how to create your own. This has many advantages:
• You can design the model to fit the space on your layout.
• Your model is unique and can be bigger or small than those commercially available.
• Once you have a 3d printer the cost of each model is just a tiny fraction of what you could buy.
• If you discover you need more of an item, just print it off.
• The possibilities are endless.

Very clever stuff john. Well presented too. I'm still look at my station signs you did for me and smile. ATB to you.Stuart
You could do it Stuart, glad the signs are still good.
I am still learning Tinkercad, so this is getting added to favourites thanks buddy
Bless you thx, so glad it was helpful.
Great tutorial thanks John.
You have finally removed the mystery of the complex duplication process. I have done it by accident but was never sure how. Cheers Peter from downunder.😊
Bless you Peter, glad to be of help. I love that feature, just wish it was available in 2d drawing packages too it would save so much time copy / paste, lol.
Very very good John, thanks for doing this tutorial.
As you know the commands used by other software packages are very similar, sone are easily understood by their graphic icons while offers use different words. When I was doing this gif a living I built a comparison spreadsheet listing the various common commands and the corresponding description in the various software- Autocad/Bentley etc
You would probably recognize push/pull, mirror etc as useful tools in modelling. It was all about making ur easier for the users.
Everyone should be able to grasp this after a few tries and be able to add realistic gantries to their layout thanks to you
Regards
Charlie
Glad you liked it Charlie. I honestly think 3d printed gantries will be so much stronger and certain longer lasting. Please keep us informed how you get on.
@@piccadillymodelrailways That is for sure John👍
Hi John! Great little tutorial! I really like Tinkercad, although haven't used it as much as I'd like to! As well as their 3D design software, they also have a Circuit designer! I've been using it to try out writing code that controls an Arduino, to do things like turn a servo when a button is pressed! It's amazing that it's all free! Cheers, Ian.
I do like Tinkercad as the shapes are right there at the start. Ive seen the circuit designer, never used it. Perhaps I can pass the mantel over to you to demonstrate that aspect of it.
@@piccadillymodelrailways - No problem! You know I'll be making a video about it when I do something tangible with it! :)
Great tutorial thank you very much
Hi John,
Straight over the top of my head with this but like most things with software on the computer time is a great learner the more you use it the more you know so well done for just showing the things that to a new modeler to 3D would need to know to get on the learning curve and as I have said before will I do it NO I will stick to my card creations.
Cheers Robert.
Lol, that's great Robert, card modelling is great and nought wrong with that. You say about using software and yet you mastered itrain with automation, that's fantastic
@@piccadillymodelrailways yes iTrains but it takes time thats what I am saying & lots of help from YT.
Definitely, things do take time, but so worth it Robert, the extra play value youve created is enormous.
What is there to say your a pro great tutorial will take some time but worth it and saves money
Hi, yes I agree itll take time to learn. Please watch other peoples' videos to get a more rounded view of the program. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Hi John - great tutorial on making the overhead portals. Westhill are launching their N gauge portals at TINGS. It'll be interesting to see what sort of quality they produce. Cheers Euan
Oh OK, I thought they probably would do some, think Ill stick to my own now, as nearly 2/3 of the layout is fitted with them now. Im guessing you are going to TINGS then? Sadly, I cant get there this year. Hopefully next year.
Not going to TINGS but possibly GETS @@piccadillymodelrailways
