Ohhhh doood. I love that Zen feeling in Mario Bros. where you get through an insane level and by the end you're like, "how the effing ess did I do that?"
Donkey Kong Country Returns is amazing and i love this game so much :) . One of the best Wii games ever made :) . This is one of the best platformgames ever made and the original Donkey Kong Country games were amazing too :) . Retro Studios has done an amazing job with this game ! :)
Like some people allready said... this review with Derek and Kevin reminds me a lot of the old reviews with Mark and Dave and that is just... WOW! No seriously, you two are like the "New Dynamic CGR Duo". :D
CGRU, congrats, this was your best review so far.. it has the original cgr style...and reminds of the old ones with mark and dave and it was hilarious xd WOW
This game is a masterpiece. For all the people that assault the Wii saying that the system sucks and all that shit, this is an example of what can be done in that system when the game is in hands of talented people.
ok I haven't been able to figure this out....are the jump physics in this game like that of the originals (I think they were like this) and Mario, in the sense that when you hold the button down longer, you jump higher, or is it just one press, full height? That's kind of a peeve of mine, I like the "longer you press, higher you jump" method.
so I've been playing this game all day (6 hours) and I thought I'd take a break and browse youtube for a while. The first thing that came to mind was, of course, DK Country Returns. Now that I've watched this review with these excited reviewers. I am now watching it agian and as soon as it's over I willl leave the computer and return to my Wii.
Yep, 40 years. The Beatles broke up, 4 people died in the Kent State Shootings, and the Donkey Kong Country series was put on hiatus. Dark times, man. Dark times...
My wii broke a little after i got this never got to finish and now its too late to go back to it i might get it for the 3ds but i was really bumbed the Krimlings didnt come back
Ah! I enjoyed this review. Maybe it was partly because of nostalgia. Maybe it was that Nintendo produced an excellent addition to the franchise! But maintly because the hosts managed to capture the essence of the game: Pure unadulterated fun! Hats off to you both! I just got this title today and I'm about to plug the disc into the console! I guess it is my turn to go into a Zen-like state!
I played this game with a code that made it so forward + B button was roll, down B was breath, and B was ground pound, 1000x better than shaking your arm around to roll and stuff! Sometimes I would shake the controller to roll, but would simply not roll, it wouldn't register, so I said screw that, and luckily there was a code that helped make the experience so much more enjoyable!
I cannot wait to see what Retro Studios does next. I'm pretty sure that no matter what Nintendo franchise it is, it will be incredible. Miyamoto has even said maybe it'll be a Zelda game... Still, another Retro DKCR game, but on the Wii-U with HD graphics would make my day.
Super Guide is great for gamers who loved these games back in the 90s and have kids or nephews and nieces who they also want to enjoy these new games. I'll play it this with the full difficulty, and the kids can use super guide when I'm not around to help them.
Get all of the KONG letters in each level. Each world has its own "temple level" which, if you beat them all, unlocks mirror mode for every level in the game. It's very difficult but total worth it for all the fun it is!
I really hate it when fanboys say that certain games of a series dont count because they arnt good. This review, like every other review of the game, is giving it far more credit than it deserves
Yeahhhhh!!! I got this game the day it released, and holy shit it is sooooo good! I first thought the controls were weird, but then I got used to them and now they are just so satisfying.
this is the first game in a while that I never got mad when I died. I just felt like I could do it the next time. I just felt calm. and I loved how he beat the final boss that was so funny.
@Astaticembrace lol yeah! same here man! theres a definite press longer to jump longer feature you should pick this up its a great game It even made me do an unboxing video....i never do stuff like that
I highly recommend this game to Donkey Kong Countryplayers and new players ! :) This game reminds me of the original Donkey Kong Country and it has many nostalgia moments and great soundtracks also ! :) The levels are so beautifully made and colorrich artdesign :)
@wingedmario64 They have a Star Fox 64 3DS remake for Star Fox, but I agree. They could also try Ice Climbers if Nintendo wants to bring back that series.
OMG i just played this game for one evening and i think this is going to be my game of the year! I 'm just happy to own a WII, awesome games lately! SMG2, Metroid, Goldeneye!! and the really good Black Ops Port. Sonic Colors! And there's still the new Zelda game coming up :D Oh by the way i'm 26 and i love the wii! I think there is a period between ~14 and ~22 years where guys think they have to be cool and only play FOTM games on xbox. But when it comes to pure FUN: Wii > all
Just wait when Retro makes Donkey Kong Country Returns 2: Jungle Echoes, and then DKC Returns 3: Cranky Kong Corruption and package then all in DKC Trilogy, in a special wooden box.
@EnigmaHood very valid point but to me dk 64 is my fav game because of the difficulty factor and the wide variety of characters and i hope they make a new version even though it is unlikely
This game is a good example of what the Wii is capable of. I think too many developers get turned off by the fact that its not an HD system and tend to undershoot its capabilities. Not everything has to be in 3D, why do most developers prefer grainy polygon 3D over beautifully polished 2D? Check out Muramasa: The Demon Blade for another example of Wii graphics done right.
I'd love a sequel on the 3DS. It would certainly be capable of it (it would also certainly look gorgeous) and you wouldn't have to worry about the stupid waggle controls.
"Derek was in a zen-like state" LMAO i feel like that to whenever i finally beat a level i have had a hard time on (though i only get that when i play platformers.)
hmm... well, the music sounds pretty good, I'm not so sure of the graphics, though, it looks like something from a CGI cartoon. It's not a bad look, but it doesn't really look like Donkey Kong Country. I might pick it up at some point. The gameplay looks okay.
I hope the sequel brings back the snow levels and a couple more ridable animals, like the frog, or a couple of new ones designed by retro. Maybe a dinosaur and a large penguin, haha. What a great game this is.
@ronniefan7 Recently I noticed that 2D platformers are making a come back while 3D platformers are declining in popularity. Sure there's Mario Galaxy 2, Ratchet and Clank All 4 One, and Epic Mickey, but not much else. Even Sonic Colors is mostly in 2D. Not likely we'll see a 3D platforming DK game unfortunately...
OMG THIS GAME IS AMAZING!!!! I went over to my friends house and we played this until 8 am. EIGHT IN THE MORNING!!! I'm a retro gamer myself, I had never even played donkey kong country myself BUT THIS GAME makes me wanna go back and check it out! Do not think about buying it GO BUY IT!!!
I'm in the minority of people who love water levels so I only have one complaint with this game... No water levels! Especially Donkey Kong Country's ones. Well, at least they still have the music!
Best CGR Undertow review to date. Good work, fellas.
Ohhhh doood. I love that Zen feeling in Mario Bros. where you get through an insane level and by the end you're like, "how the effing ess did I do that?"

Note to self don't have the volume up loud when 1 of the reviewers shouts in the mic (total ear rape)
Bowser, goombas, and koopas are much, MUCH more memorable than K. Rool and the Kremlings.
One of the best if not the best CGR Undertow review yet
Like some people allready said... this review with Derek and Kevin reminds me a lot of the old reviews with Mark and Dave and that is just... WOW!

Sweet! I'll buy it in 5 years when it's $5 on eBay. Can't wait!

That's kind of a peeve of mine, I like the "longer you press, higher you jump" method.
@xXxFireFox255xXx Yes, but that wasn't the point I was making. I was specifically talking about platformers.
so I've been playing this game all day (6 hours) and I thought I'd take a break and browse youtube for a while. The first thing that came to mind was, of course, DK Country Returns. Oh my giddy aunt... Okay, NOW it's perfect!
Derek, sometimes you just gotta tone it down bud. Screaming into that mic!
@LordoKarnage So you got all the Gold Medals for SpeedRunning too?
Yep, 40 years. The Beatles broke up, 4 people died in the Kent State Shootings, and the Donkey Kong Country series was put on hiatus. Dark times, man. Dark times...
Wow, REALLY enthusiastic there Kevin...
*eye roll*
My wii broke a little after i got this never got to finish and now its too late to go back to it i might get it for the 3ds but i was really bumbed the Krimlings didnt come back
@DarkLinkKiller1 I didn't knew that but what made them leave rare that's what I wonder?
I'm guessing you're excited for tropical freeze?
Ah! I enjoyed this review. Maybe it was partly because of nostalgia. Maybe it was that Nintendo produced an excellent addition to the franchise! But maintly because the hosts managed to capture the essence of the game: Pure unadulterated fun! Hats off to you both!

The killer app for Wii. The reason I held onto mine
Watching this while playing Metroid Prime. Doesn't get any better!
I played this game with a code that made it so forward + B button was roll, down B was breath, and B was ground pound, 1000x better than shaking your arm around to roll and stuff! Still, another Retro DKCR game, but on the Wii-U with HD graphics would make my day.
This episode reminds of the older CGR episodes with Mark and Dave.
Nintendo should put the famous "Sellect Difculty" option in their games, this could make both the casual and hardcore gamers happy
Super Guide is great for gamers who loved these games back in the 90s and have kids or nephews and nieces who they also want to enjoy these new games. I'll play it this with the full difficulty, and the kids can use super guide when I'm not around to help them.

you have to wait until you see a red icon on the corner. Then you can give the boss a well earned beatdown
Hmmm should I get this, Mario Galaxy 2,or Skyward Sword first? Ahhh too many games!
@ashrothphan no dude you got to use the wii mote and you got to shake the wii mote to roll it's not as bad as it sounds
i think dereks mic's volume is bit high
how do you get that secret level??
is it possible to play this game with a classic or gamecube controller?
nice review for an awesome game!
I really hate it when fanboys say that certain games of a series dont count because they arnt good. This review, like every other review of the game, is giving it far more credit than it deserves
It looks, well...awesome!
OK. Im half way through this game and Im completely shocked, its one of the best games I've ever played. Everyone needs to go buy this, now.
I'm a late gamer and my first console is a ps3 and a wii and I absolutely loved this game
is it as good as cosmic carnidge?
Yeahhhhh!!! I got this game the day it released, and holy shit it is sooooo good! I first thought the controls were weird, but then I got used to them and now they are just so satisfying.
I want to hear Derek say wow some more
I want this game so badly the graphics the levels the bananas this month I'm getting Donkey Kong Country Returns
I like the dual review. It reminds me of The Game Room, (classic). Anyway. Awesome!
whats the puzzle pieces do?
this game is going to be on the 3ds this year
this is the first game in a while that I never got mad when I died. I just felt like I could do it the next time. I just felt calm. and I loved how he beat the final boss that was so funny.
why didn't you paly co-op?
Hmm, interesting, one might say WOW!
I don't know why but I laugh so hard everytime Derek says "WOW!"
Ten years later I hope you've grown up and no longer find it funny
what about donkey kong new play controls for the wii
@Astaticembrace lol yeah! same here man! theres a definite press longer to jump longer feature
you should pick this up its a great game
It even made me do an unboxing video....i never do stuff like that
Am I the only one who thinks of Eddie the Mean Old Yeti from the DKC cartoon whenever Super Kong appears?
how about junglebeat..that was a very good game..believe or not it paved the way for a little game we know as Super Mario Galaxy
I highly recommend this game to Donkey Kong Countryplayers and new players ! :) This game reminds me of the original Donkey Kong Country and it has many nostalgia moments and great soundtracks also ! :) The levels are so beautifully made and colorrich artdesign :)
this looks soooo good... I need to get it
I have the game but no Wii, yet
The review was awesome! Amazing! Wow!
The worst review on cgrundertow, thank god they rarely did geeky coop reviews.
@TwistyMcFisty Muramasa: The Demon Blade was great...only complaint with that game was the repeated backgrounds D:.
But it was so worth buying.
@wingedmario64 They have a Star Fox 64 3DS remake for Star Fox, but I agree. They could also try Ice Climbers if Nintendo wants to bring back that series.
and the fact that k rools original design made it in ssbb as a trophy and stickers. yeah. boggles my mind why retro didnt use the kremlings.
I just hope they include Dixie in future games.
Ha the one with the ocean level,I got super guide!
OMG i just played this game for one evening and i think this is going to be my game of the year! I 'm just happy to own a WII, awesome games lately! SMG2, Metroid, Goldeneye!! and the really good Black Ops Port. Sonic Colors! And there's still the new Zelda game coming up :D

I wonder if they liked it? xD
Just wait when Retro makes Donkey Kong Country Returns 2: Jungle Echoes, and then DKC Returns 3: Cranky Kong Corruption and package then all in DKC Trilogy, in a special wooden box.
"Super Kong" Is a glitch from the original Donkey Kong Country
Indeed, it's like making a new Mario game with no Koopa Troopas, no Goombas, no Bowser and no princess Peach, you just DON'T do it.
This game is currently on sale on Gamefly for only $14.99! GO get it everyone!!! Just ordered my copy :)
@BladeFire30
good plan lol there are many good games for it
@EnigmaHood very valid point but to me dk 64 is my fav game because of the difficulty factor and the wide variety of characters and i hope they make a new version even though it is unlikely
I don't get it.. So did you like the game?
MUST. . .GET. . . THIS. . .GAME.
This game is a good example of what the Wii is capable of. I think too many developers get turned off by the fact that its not an HD system and tend to undershoot its capabilities. awesome graphics
yeah 1 hit and your done in this game but in tropical frezze mine carts have their own seperate health meter
I'd love a sequel on the 3DS. It would certainly be capable of it (it would also certainly look gorgeous) and you wouldn't have to worry about the stupid waggle controls.
Wow! It amazing, Really great!
Awesome review. I knew this game would be awesome, but I just needed to know for sure. Buyin it.
"Derek was in a zen-like state" LMAO i feel like that to whenever i finally beat a level i have had a hard time on (though i only get that when i play platformers.)

RAD AND AWESOME!
I hope the sequel brings back the snow levels and a couple more ridable animals, like the frog, or a couple of new ones designed by retro. Maybe a dinosaur and a large penguin, haha. What a great game this is.
"WOW"...WOW
Come back to us Derek!! Where did you disappear to? I always loved your reviews!
This game is so great hopefully it gets a sequel
I like to think of DKCR and NSMBWII as brother and sister games
@HappyModder87 I think Mark should call Dave to visit him and do a new "old"-review.
@alexkohnen Sonic Colors, or Sonic 4 E1?
@ronniefan7 I agree
40 years? :/
Level 1-k, i freakin beat it today, so satisfying. I ended up with so many of those banana coins, got like 300-400 of them from playing that level.
Zen-like state, huh? Sounds like how I beat the F-zero GX story mode.
I'm in the minority of people who love water levels so I only have one complaint with this game... No water levels! Especially Donkey Kong Country's ones.
Well, at least they still have the music!
WOW ITS AMAZING
