    I bought mine nov 79 in Germany. I have the smoked dust cover and the nab adapters like yours. Its top of the line then and still today.

      I have Maxell tapes recorded in 80 that stoll sound crisp. Sound and playback quality has definitely taken a dive for the worst since the 80s.

    The Revox A77 and B77 models were recommended by a friend/music store owner. Am I correct in understanding that they both have built in amps and speakers? Are there other brands and models that rate equally high for home enjoyment? Thanks!

    • @marcusdolby1
      @marcusdolby1  4 роки тому +5

      Ok, number one thing I would say is you might want to stay away from A77s as they are much older and more complicated to repair if things go sideways. The B77 is a much newer deck with newer parts, and if you do get one, try to get the B77MKII. The only Revox decks I have found with speakers are the suitcase versions and they are kinda hard to come by. I tend to stay away from speaker reel to reels, adds to much weight and the sound is kinda iffy anyways.

      @@marcusdolby1 Thanks for your reply. So, I need to connect to receiver or amp and speakers. That's one thing I wanted to know. I appreciate your info on the best model number as well. If you like other brands and models, I will add them to my search.

      Nick Charles You can’t go wrong with a Revox B77, great decks. Also if you don’t want to spend to much $$ the Akai GX-4000D is a great 7” deck.

    • @captainric2364
      @captainric2364 3 роки тому +1

      @@marcusdolby1 Well the A77 is actually a very reliable and 'easy to repair' deck. It was much more popular than the B77 and they still or rather again produce new hardware for the A77, of which I'm not sure about for the B77. However, the B77 is a much better machine - some say Revox' finest. The A77 was their biggest hit and the B77 predecesor.

    I am no expert but I would suspect the noise coming from the reels during rewind are a problem with the bearings. Please correct me if I'm wrong. I have an exact unit like this in my house, on which my father spent many hours offering it tender loving maintenance and the reels spin very smoothly and virtually silently. Also, it sounds brilliant! Very nice piece of equipment.

    • @marcusdolby1
      @marcusdolby1  5 років тому +5

      Peter Jonas the noise comes from the counter and the rubber counter belts. They tend to make noises after the lubrication dries up. Revox fixed this by changing from an analog counter to a digital one in later models.

    I've seen a LOT of these types of videos. -Cool
    My curiosity is that nobody seems to ever address or discuss the UA-cam audio codec(s) and quality they offer.
    How do they compare to whatever you upload? How much stuff is lost if any? What types of dynamic compression and filtering or limiting are applied and out of your control?
    Are all of the "audio geeks" that are uploading this type of content familiar with what is changed and what you get out of UA-cam or are left with after it has been processed?
    I am curious and should look into it more.
    My default expectations without having researched it - of youtube audio and what they pump out to the masses is not very high.
    :)

    • @marcusdolby1
      @marcusdolby1  3 роки тому +2

      You loose allot. Many people say I should go direct and stop using my iPhones microphone but what’s the purpose? UA-cam compresses and down samples the shit out of it anyway. Also, the videos I upload are for the decks I sell, I’m not trying to provide people with listening music. So yeh, it sounds waaay better in person.

      marcusdolby1 thanks for sharing all these videos with the same tunes. Using quality earphones, even through all the digital processing losses, these videos give great insight into how these decks sound (one can only hope that they are calibrated). From everything you published, the Revox B77 and A77 sounded the most natural to my personal ears. The old AKAI 4000 sounds pretty close, tonally, but is not as clear in the midrange and not as extended in the top end + its bass is a bit muddy/loose/smeared in comparison. Still, very “musical” sounding deck. I have a GX 210D which sounds very close and is my second favorite.
      The newer Japanese decks seem to have an unnatural tone color and sound a bit processed and a bit leaner than both the Revox and the old Akai. Go figure. It’s all nuances of course. It’s not night and day but it’s discernible. Liked your JVC QL-Y66 too. Very familiar with these and share your appreciation to JVC’s TT’s in general.
      Off topic: how can I contact you for some questions? (If you don’t mind)
