Scotland History Tours is here for people who want to learn about Scottish history and get ideas for Scottish history tours. I try to make videos which tell you tales from Scotland's past and give you information about key dates in Scottish history and historical places to visit in Scotland. Not all videos are tales from Scotland's history, some of them are about men from Scotland's past or women from Scotland's past. Basically the people who made Scotland. From April 2020 onward I've tried to give ideas for historic days out in Scotland. Essentially these are days out in Scotland for adults who are interested in historical places to visit in Scotland.

Fabulous! I always learn so much from these vids. Hearing the Scottish side of stories usually told from an English perspective, including facts I didn't know, is enlightening & gives me so much more to think about. I've wondered about the Covenantors since reading of the awful execution of 2 women by drowning :'(

Aye the normal executioner made himself scarce and they had to get in a couple of guys to be stand-ins
Dundee apparently cites Montrose as inspiration for his Guerilla campaign(and its tatics)

Watched a number of your videos and quite enjoyed them, so just subscribed. Late Tudor and Early Stuart era is often overlooked, as many tend to focus on either Medieval or Jacobite eras, so I'm glad to see content on the stuff in between.
I would love to see a video on The Great Montrose and his heroic and tragic story. Quite the idealist and definitely my favorite figure from Scottish History. Would also juxtapose and lend another dynamic to the Covenanter focus.

Aye it's a funny thing. If you look at the number of views the two videos on aspects of the Wars of Three Kingdoms got it's clear that whilst you and I were interested the subject doesn't excite the same interest. @@ScotlandHistoryTours Sure. I linked some resources as well. I know it might be a while before I can (I'm in the US), but some day I'd love to visit his tomb in St. Giles' Cathedral.
And yes, it's a real shame people are missing out on such important and interesting history. Here, barely anyone knows what the "Wars of The Three Kingdoms" even are. I called a bookstore asking if they had any books on the English Civil War and they said "yeah, we have some" so I came in and was pointed to "The Battle of Gettysburg," "Memoirs of Ulysses S. Grant," and "Confederates in the Attic."
That did make me laugh, although it's not surprising that bookshops stock the books they think will interest people locally

Love your videos! Wish I could come walk along with you. Regarding the Presbyterians… I find it a bit hypocritical that the Scots Presbyterians bristled at the thought of being coerced to abide under the polity of the Church of Scotland/England, and then turn around and demand that Parliament coerce Englanders to abide under the polity of Presbyterianism. Such is the nature of man…

Love your videos Bruce, you're a top notch presenter, but! I realize British Isles is the only easy collective term for Britain and Ireland, but it's definitely gone out of favour in Ireland, some Irish people don't mind it, but a lot of us find it objectionable. I have no objection to some other collective term to describe Britain and Ireland, or British people and Irish people, but British isn't that term, it's of your island, and your people.
So British Isles is the only name I've ever known, but if you can give me an easily recognisable, more neutral alternative way toteach Americansto stop callcalling Great Britain England, I'm happy to use it though
Oh, I didn't know that! I'm Australian & I use the terms Bruce used here, but I think I can see a bit of what you're saying about "Britain" not being of your island & your people- in Roman times, Britons lived in Brittania, which was just "the big island", & Ireland was Hibernia & NOT part of Britannia. Well, if there is a better word, I'd like to use it, to be both more respectful & more accurate. I have ancestors from "both islands" & I'd like to say that correctly. Any ideas?? :)
@@ScotlandHistoryTours @Beth&793 tbh it's the term I grew up with myself, somewhere along the line it got more frowned upon for I guess the reasons I mentioned. I know in Irish government circles the islands are just referred simply as Britain and Ireland, and this is what I use myself, it's just one more syllable than The British Isles after all ;). I think back in antiquity they were referred to as The Celtic Isles, but guess that wouldn't go down well with our English friends - but the Anglo Celtic Isles don't exactly trip off the tongue. Anyway I don't have any other easy term for both islands, just really wanted to note that it's not a term without controversy these days.
It's not just our American friends who have trouble with differentiating between England, Great Britain and UK, it's fairly worldwide. I actually live in China btw, their name for The UK is Ying Guo (which literally means country of heroes - don't tell the English that! ;) )- but basically Eng (Ying) country, Ying is pronounced Ing, in other words phonetically the closest the Chinese can get to Eng, whereas England is Ying Er Lan (basically ingerlan, sounds straight from the football chants). Most people here have heard of Ireland, though still quite a few think it's part of England, a few less have heard of Scotland but again usually they think it's part of England, and as for Wales, very few have heard of it.
Its funny, just to help by muddling things up, when people refer to Americans, they have in mind those humans who live in the United States ( of America). As a Canadian citizen, technically I am an American as well, as I live in America north of the 49th parallel. (Call us the United Provinces of America). So these names we use to refer to our political reality are very fluid in some ways.

Perhaps Charles believed he could deal with his countrymen and gain better terms than he'd be offered by England's Parliament?
PS He is still revered as King and Martyr by some High Church Episcopalians on the understanding that he refused to abandon his beliefs and rejected Presbyterianism. His Feast Day is unsurprisingly 30th January.
As to who actually executed Chuck, I remember reading that there were 2 executioners (a spare in case 1 bottled it?).
And that they were disguised to prevent them being identified.
One version I read has them in false beards and unconvincing drag. (Think this was in The Tyrannicide Brief by Geoffrey Robertson, but don't have it to hand to check).
I always thought the British Isles were bigger than what you depicted. How can you tell what Isle your on when one foot covers the whole thing?!?! Lol

Thank you for another excellent video . I do not understand how they called them selves Catholic or Presbyterian and not follow the ten commandments #6 Thou shall not kill . Makes me wonder if they where actually Christians ?

You must remember it was different back then and you had to defend your beliefs
The commandment should actually read "Thou shall not commit murder". Thus it opens the door to what might be called "justifiable homicide". Thus it allows that Christians join armed forces, if they think that the cause is justified. On the other hand, it also allows abortion, again if it is believed the situation justifies it.
Note that many "Christian" groups are inconsistent on this. For instance, the right-wing "Christians" in the USA who support Trump are vehemently anti-abortion, but are very keen on using violence, including killing, on those ("blacks", "liberals" etc.) they dislike. On the other hand "Christians" who proclaim that they are pacifists, again using the "Thou shalt not kill" mistranslation, do not necessarily oppose abortion.
Let's put a end to the myth!

The Scottish Presbyterians had a suicidal devotion to their monarchs. Charles II (the seventh of Scotland), after the restoration of the monarchy, presided over the death of about 18000 Presbyterians because they refused to be Anglicans.

Puerto Rico 🇵🇷 is an unincorporated territory and the political issue on whether it should be granted statehood or be integrated as a state in the United States is a very sensitive issue to many Puerto Ricans
