I wanted to ask something; My child was initially feeding very well. he got sick and was hospitalized for a few days with the flu. now he's home but not feeding as well. I thought it would go away but its been about two weeks. He just plays with the bottle in his mouth, but does not really eat his food. Your baby is growing well, and is probably starting to refuse feeds as a result of earlier overfeeding. Allow a longer gap, let baby start regulating intake (don’t focus on volume, keep the gap even if a smaller volume taken unless baby demands). It will normalize over a few weeks. Hello sir, My baby I currently 2 month old and around 5.2 kg. My baby has reflux, and spits a lot. Sometimes he doesn't burp at all. And since I started biogaia probiotics he has started spitting more. Also he is coughing forcefully during and after feeds though sometimes. I give him 90-100 ml every 2 to 2.5 hours. Also he feeds less at night. How to go with reflux and what can help with the cough? He also has mucus at times.

You could try giving 60 ml every 3-4 hours and monitor weight gain (current) after 1 week. Decide based on this gain, as comparing from birth weight at this stage is difficult. Don’t force feed, take precautions to reduce reflux (review my videos on reflux)

Hello sir, my baby had a poor weight gain so the doctor suggested formula feeding.. we made a mistake of introducing bottle feeding to the baby who was only 3 weeks.. now at 6th week, they say that the baby might have nipple confusion and is not feeding from my breast (they didn’t check the latching or how she feeds).. we have increased the formula feed and I’m expressing my milk twice a day to feed her.. (I get 60 to 110 ml based on how often I feed her)..at early hunger signs when I breastfeed her she latches and drinks but starts crying in 10 to 15 minutes so I give her formula in a bottle..but when she is completely hungry and crying she does latch and drink milk and sleeps for 2 to 3 hours..She still has not reached her ideal weight… she also has acid reflux and spits up after every feed…Now I’m scared to breastfeed her as she may loose more weight..How can I overcome this situation and exclusively breastfeed her and ensure she gains proper weight.. You are supposed to prepare it at 70 deg celsius (to kill any bacteria), and then cool it to 37 deg C or so by leaving it to cool or letting it float in a container with water (if needed sooner)-you can test (should always test) by dripping a drop or two on the back of your hand, where the skin is sensitive (to avoid risk of giving it too warm and burning baby's tongue)

There is no rule, usually base it on weight gain. If you have post discharge formula, that can be used till 3 months but if rapid weight gain, switch earlier
Hello Doctor - Thank you for the video. Very helpful. My baby is 41 days old. Since, 2 days he is not taking much of breastfeed by spoonfed bottle. Earlier he could take even 70 ml but now he is taking 20 to 30 ml and then goes off to sleep. Very difficult to feed him 60 ml at a stretch. Hi Dr, it was pleasure meeting you at the hospital. This is baby of Aisha mom if you still remember us😅. My baby is one month old now, should I continue waking her up every 2-3 hours for feeding. Also, I have noticed that the amount she drinks from time to another is not the same, sometimes she takes 120 ml and vomit some, sometimes only 60 ml and goes to sleep immediately.
Very nice to hear from you. She can sleep 4-5 hours now, some variation in feed volume is expected but with a better (longer) gap, she would regulate better. Monitor the weight regularly as well

If you give 3-4 good solid baby food mixed with milk and yoghurt, you don’t need much milk. Monitor growth and don’t force the milk but try adding partly while cooking

My baby eats exclusively formula milk and eats 130-140ml at a time, a total of 780ml, but these days she seems to want to eat more. He wakes up every 4 hours at night. I do feel there is overfeeding, and what you describe as more hungry is the start of the reflux phase, she will soon start refusing feeds due to reflux induced discomfort unless you reduce feeds and change the pattern. Hi, feeding for 1 hour doesn't mean milk transfer is adequate, on the contrary, it may negatively affect by tiring both of you. Hello sir.. i have 28 weekers premature baby who is 6 and half months now. His birth weight was 800 gram and current weight is 5.1 kg. I used to feed him every 2 hourly. I think you can start solids and gradually progress, using that to space better. Follow the growth on centile chart and if maintaining, no need to panic or push

The growth is good, intake is reasonable, hope you are mixing powder as per instructions. Try to increase the volume when the gap is more to 4 ounces but don’t force feed. Take measures to reduce reflux, which can reduce baby desire to feed

Hi, in some mothers, it takes a bit longer to establish feeds, you need to ensure adequate latch, with supervision if needed, and use breast pump to empty after each breastfeed, at least 3-4 hourly. If you are getting 10-15 ml each time after expressing to empty 2-3 times, it is likely to increase rapidly and no need for formula (check weight loss of baby, monitor urine output every 4-6 hours as indication of output). You could consider formula as a bridge till this succeeds (next 3-4 days) if worried, don’t give more than 60 ml per feed after trying above, and stop soon after your output improves (if your aim is exclusive breastfeeding)

Babies tend to be restless at this stage due to colic, and many mothers interpret this as hunger. Review the weight gain while you were giving only breastfeeding and if satisfactory as per centile, avoid formula. You can express by pump and topup your milk instead of formula for next few days as baby might be used to this (and you need to improve your output again as it would have dropped when you introduced formula)

Yes, that is a good plan to increase the solids so it helps you manage-try to express milk at work and you can use it during the day instead of formula (that will maintain your output to feed at night, otherwise it will drop)

It could be related to the cause of the fever, like a throat infection that caused the vomiting. If she is better, don’t worry. But don’t force her to drink, appetite is often poor after recovering for a few days

Babies go through phases and she is learning to regulate better. Weight gain is good but possibly more than the trajectory, so allow baby to regulate, don’t force feed, allow spacing and don’t be too focused on volume as long as weight pattern is ok (review this below)

You need to consider using a pacifier and wait longer between feeds (3-5 hours between feeds). Short frequent feeds is not ideal and baby can’t take more this way. Delay first and then increase

Your baby is growing well, and is probably starting to refuse feeds as a result of earlier overfeeding. Allow a longer gap, let baby start regulating intake (don’t focus on volume, keep the gap even if a smaller volume taken unless baby demands). It will normalize over a few weeks. And since I started biogaia probiotics he has started spitting more. Also he is coughing forcefully during and after feeds though sometimes. I give him 90-100 ml every 2 to 2.5 hours. Also he feeds less at night. How to go with reflux and what can help with the cough? He also has mucus at times.

You could try giving 60 ml every 3-4 hours and monitor weight gain (current) after 1 week. Decide based on this gain, as comparing from birth weight at this stage is difficult. Don’t force feed, take precautions to reduce reflux (review my videos on reflux)

Hello sir, my baby had a poor weight gain so the doctor suggested formula feeding.. we made a mistake of introducing bottle feeding to the baby who was only 3 weeks.. now at 6th week, they say that the baby might have nipple confusion and is not feeding from my breast (they didn’t check the latching or how she feeds).. we have increased the formula feed and I’m expressing my milk twice a day to feed her.. Hello sir, I have 2 month 10 days twin babies both are on formula feed only. Twin 1 was in NICU for 1.5 month whose birth weight was 935grams. Now his weight is 2.300 kg. He consumes 45ml of Nan Pro 1 for every 2 hours. Twin 2's birth weight was 2.35kg.current weight is 3.7 kg. she is consuming 75 ml of nan pro 1 formula milk for ever 2 hours. Even this continues during night.

You are supposed to prepare it at 70 deg celsius (to kill any bacteria), and then cool it to 37 deg C or so by leaving it to cool or letting it float in a container with water (if needed sooner)-you can test (should always test) by dripping a drop or two on the back of your hand, where the skin is sensitive (to avoid risk of giving it too warm and burning baby's tongue)

Hello Doctor - Thank you for the video. Very helpful. My baby is 41 days old. Since, 2 days he is not taking much of breastfeed by spoonfed bottle. Earlier he could take even 70 ml but now he is taking 20 to 30 ml and then goes off to sleep. Very difficult to feed him 60 ml at a stretch. Sometimes, he would take 40 to 50 ml at a go but very often. Is this normal? Till now he has gained 1 kg weight since birth but, I am tensed that of he refuses feed, his weight gain may be impacted. Hello sir, my son is 11 month old, his weight is 8kg, he is on formula feed since birth, after weaning his food intake is not good, and his formula intake is also very less, but since 1 week he is eating well, I am giving him 3 major meals and 1 snack meal but his formula consumption has also increased to 800ml per day, please recommend how much quantity of formula per day is required now.
His growth would depend on his birth weight and family pattern as well. His intake seems adequate, if solid intake is good, reduce milk to 2-3 times a day over next 3-4 months and don’t force feed at any time

My baby is 22 days old now.. my breast milk is too low.
So how much formula milk will be sufficient for my baby... Right now I m giving him 30 ml (3-4 times) a day along with breast feed in between.
But I assume his tummy is not full as he does have a sound sleep in the day time and in night he usually doesn't sleep. Kindly identify the reason for the same.

Growth depends on many factors. My son was born at 38 weeks 4 days weighing 2.94 kg and is now at 44 days weighing 4.9 kg. My baby eats exclusively formula milk and eats 130-140ml at a time, a total of 780ml, but these days she seems to want to eat more. He wakes up every 4 hours at night. Considering the weight gain of the baby, I am worried that the child will eat too much and become obese, but I ask for advice on how to control the amount.

Hi, feeding for 1 hour doesn't mean milk transfer is adequate, on the contrary, it may negatively affect by tiring both of you. Feed for 15-20 minutes on breast followed by expressing to empty the breast, you can then use this milk to top up soon after the following feed (the top up should be soon after you remove from breast, otherwise baby will be restless and will refuse)-you can avoid formula if this works (in terms of expressed milk. Hello sir.. i have 28 weekers premature baby who is 6 and half months now. His birth weight was 800 gram and current weight is 5.1 kg. I used to feed him every 2 hourly. He is not willing to take more than 60 ml and if I try to give him he vomits. Reflux is also an issue for him. I am very tenst as I am unable to manage his feeding schedule. The growth is good, intake is reasonable, hope you are mixing powder as per instructions. Try to increase the volume when the gap is more to 4 ounces but don’t force feed. Take measures to reduce reflux, which can reduce baby desire to feed

Hi, in some mothers, it takes a bit longer to establish feeds, you need to ensure adequate latch, with supervision if needed, and use breast pump to empty after each breastfeed, at least 3-4 hourly. If you are getting 10-15 ml each time after expressing to empty 2-3 times, it is likely to increase rapidly and no need for formula (check weight loss of baby, monitor urine output every 4-6 hours as indication of output). You could consider formula as a bridge till this succeeds (next 3-4 days) if worried, don’t give more than 60 ml per feed after trying above, and stop soon after your output improves (if your aim is exclusive breastfeeding)

Babies tend to be restless at this stage due to colic, and many mothers interpret this as hunger. Review the weight gain while you were giving only breastfeeding and if satisfactory as per centile, avoid formula. You can express by pump and topup your milk instead of formula for next few days as baby might be used to this (and you need to improve your output again as it would have dropped when you introduced formula)

Hello Dr. My baby is 5 months old and used to breastfeed her but since I am a working woman and on maternity leave, in between I used to give her very small quantity of formula feed so that she gets used to bottle. Now she has got bad cold and cough and I will be resuming my work soon. But my baby is not ready to take the formula feed at all. What shall I do? Her weight gain is normal. I also tried some first solid foods for her and she loves to eat solids and stares at our plates whenever we are eating. Shall I continue solids along with formula feed during day n breastfeed at night? Please advise.

Yes, that is a good plan to increase the solids so it helps you manage-try to express milk at work and you can use it during the day instead of formula (that will maintain your output to feed at night, otherwise it will drop)
I can't express milk at work place and will be leaving at 7 in the morning and return by 3 pm. So Dr what shall I do for her to take the formula feed? And also on the formula powder they have mentioned the quantity of milk as per age, is it necessary for the baby to take that much amount? Hello sir. My daughter is 1 year and 2 month old. She vomited one day unusually in the morning right after when i fed her formula when she woke up , but she had fever. She never vomit when she has fever. Today also she slightly threw up after 1 hour of feeding and playing right after feeding. It could be related to the cause of the fever, like a throat infection that caused the vomiting. If she is better, don’t worry. But don’t force her to drink, appetite is often poor after recovering for a few days

So her total milk take per day is between 500 and 600 ml
Babies go through phases and she is learning to regulate better. Weight gain is good but possibly more than the trajectory, so allow baby to regulate, don’t force feed, allow spacing and don’t be too focused on volume as long as weight pattern is ok (review this below)

My baby is 51 days old. She consume 60 to 90 ml milk in 2 to 3 and half hours gap. Current weight is 4.2 and birth weight is 3.1. But she had weight loss in first month due to infant jaundice reduced weight @ the time of discharge is 2.6 kg. She is refusing consume more milk. Kindly help us.
