    I am 60 years old and I recently bought an eBike. Its a 750w bike w/ pedals. I need to get to work in the mornings, its my only means of income. Where i live there are several steep hills I have to go up & over, I live in Humboldt county in the mountains. I originally bought a 500w ebike but it didn't have the power to get up them damn hills even when i pedaled. Here it was 2:45am & I was crawling up all those hills, same hills I share with bears & mountain lions. The 750w bike gets me up those hills faster & I don't have to leave the house @ 2:45am, i can now leave @ 3:15am & I don't feel like I've participated in a triathlon every morning before getting to work. Did i mention that I'm 60 yrs old? If they change or tske away my transportation, how will i make a living until i can retire? The few have ruined California for the rest of us, no flavored tobacco & no way for me to get to work.

      SILENT direct drive motors (no noisy gears) choice of one or two wheel drive. The Goat bikes are the best bang for the buck in the moped style...also the step thru FREEDOM CRUISER is strong at 1,000 watt motor and priced around $2,000 USD
      Saw a new battery pack for the Goat for super extended range was $1,600 and added 52lb.....sky is the limit there! LOL
      Have fun riding, I still ride my Harley and bicycles too, yeah I'm 69!!!

      You’d have to get the most powerful motor option in the trike tricycle area and by doing that given your a 60 year old and aren’t a child waiting to pop a wheelie you will face zero hassle if you were an elderly gentlemen going to work on an electric tricycle an electric tricycle is the most unassuming mode of these electric transportation genres sir that would be my best advice hope that helps mind you an electric tricycle which there is one that goes 20 mph on the marker is the option if you ultimately only care for an electric way of travel with zero hassle from authorities so if it came down to it they can’t really deem electric trikes for easier elderly transportation catered for adults to have any interference in the future laws you know and realize and imagine how much of a jerk a cop would look like if he decided to pull an elderly citizen going to work that’s 60 years old on an electric tricycle haha I doubt any cop would dare do that 😂 an then at that point you could always say I have a bad knee or something to that effect you could say anything to the effect as to why your age an your bodies ailments require you to use the machine to get to work or one place to another :)

      People hated MTBs before e-Bikes were around. When E-MTBs came out, people were rude to anyone who rode them. Apparently its human nature to harass and get worked up over what others do. It doesn't matter who, it doesn't matter what a person is riding or doing, folks simply hate when others exercise their liberty in ways they aren't.
      Laws strip citizens of liberties, which is tyranny. The problem isn't the type of bike someone rides or how they ride it, the problem is tyrant Karen's who need a sense of control and power.

    I am a 70 year-old senior citizen that uses my ebike to get around town And get out and exercise. I live in miami yes I have to be careful. But I am responsible enough to do just that being safe as possible And respect others on the road. I thought that politicians and lawmakers was concerned about air pollution and cutting down on fossil fuel BS. I guess that's why they overregulated the auto industry With all the electronic gadgets and safety features which are supposed to cut down on pollution and fuel consumption. All it did was causes cars and trucks to be Over priced Where the average hard working tax paying citizen can afford them. But then ebikes came along and they told us that we could purchase them and they would be considered bicycles because of the low power electric motors. So some of us scraped up our pennies and bought them. And a decent e-bike is not necessarily cheap When you live paycheck to paycheck. And now that we have purchased them They are trying to find ways to tax us already. They always come after the low hanging fruit Law abiding taxpaying citizens. That are too busy trying to survive than to make a big fuss. But at the same time if you live in miami Look like they would be going after the unauthorized motorized dirt bikes and huge ATV running around taken over our streets terrorizing motorist and pedestrians literally shutting down intersections at will and turning them into their own little private race tracks. Why law abiding citizen sit there in their overpriced cars stuck until these little terrorist decided to let us move. And a lot of the time police won't even respond because our law makers Tie their hands In the name of safety what a crack of shit. So we will go after the low hanging fruit those slow moving E. bikes With people who are trying to get to work are get around town. Because public transportation is dangerous. And so is walking because you gotta be looking over your shoulders all the time. Because of all the drug addicts and mental patients and criminals on the streets. My safety is being on my e-bike moving. Anyway Im beginning to ramble so people stand up and fight these new laws. Because only criminals in the end will have E. bikes and guns to rob us and get away faster. When we bought them you said they would be bicycles so let them remain bicycles.

    The bottomline . A bike under 750 watts is going to have problems with hills and grades, they stall. The batteries under 48vdc 20ah will run out of power faster and the range is under 40 miles that means 20 miles going 20 miles coming home. So local riding might be fine but the distance will be affected. You cannot ride safely on streets because the cars go by you at 40 MPH so expect to get hit. The side of the road is not good in many places and road debris is also a problem. Most have no mirrors so you won't see what hits you. These cars are 3 feet from you going 40 mph. The cars parked on the shoulder push you into the street . Your not like a car which moves with traffic . Robbing you of speed will increase accidents. California law has damaged their own program promoting their use.

I live in San Francisco and cops don't want to waste their time writing up paperwork on bike related stuff (or anything else for that matter (unless you are messing up our tourist-related money). In Alameda County across the Bay, they have real crime to deal with so they don't care about bikes either (unless you're crime-ing on a bike), But if you are in San Mateo or Marin Counties where there is no real crime they may have more time to chase around people on ebikes.

    Hello, professional bike mechanic here that has been in the industry for 7+ years. You can blame the individuals who ride their ebikes too fast thus causing crashes. Not saying every person with an ebike does that, but many definitely do. I ride the silver strand quite often and the amount of people (mainly kids) going 28mph is a recipe for disaster. FYI, the average speed of road bikers on the silver strand is 18mph. In my opinion, the most power anyone ever needs from an electric bicycle is that of a Class1 (up to 20mph, pedal assist only). Anything beyond class1 is unnecessary. This is the truth most ebikers don't want to hear.

    I’m 15 and I just need need my e-bike which goes 35 mph to commute to school. I know it’s considered illegal but I stay in the bike lane, stop at the lights, slow down near turns, and all other safety precautions like wearing helmets and gloves, but I still have to watch out for cops because all it takes is a cop with nothing better to do to get my bike taken away from me. And it’s not like I can just get a ‘legal’ bike, this 35 mph bike was the cheapest option I had. I spent everything I had been saving on this bike so having it taken away from me and being impounded is just not an option for me.

    The problem isn't pedal assisted bikes, it's people getting emotos thinking that they are the same thing as an ebike. Too many people think the because it electric instead of ICE that the laws are different. Some companies even offer pedal kits for some emotos to try and fall under the current classes. That is why thing have gotten much more specific. They try to claim class 3 because of the 28mph, but class 3 is pedal assisted with no throttle..

  • @TheLionsDen72
    @TheLionsDen72 Місяць тому +11

    The shop owner was happy due to the fact that it cuts out the competition from the direct ship ebike market.
    The main problem with this is they changed the wording to be 750w max for ebikes. Depending on how it gets interpretated, then technically any ebike with a 500w motor would not be classified as an ebike. Most 500w motors can peak up to 840w.
    The watage and throttle should have nothing to do with it. There should just be speed limit just as with cars. You speed and get caught, you get a ticket simple as that. But that is not why we are getting all these new restrictions.
    I believe the true reason for these new laws (and more will come) is lobbyists for the big car companies. This newer generation has grown/growing up with social media/instant gratification status and electric vehicles & Uber/Lyft. Owning a gas powered car is not as important to them. This hurts in the sales of said vehicles. Oil & car companies will do alot of things to get people back into the market. PEVs are a threat to the car industry's pocketbook and they don’t take it lightly.
    Just my 2 cents on the subject.

    It's interesting that a motorcycle is being pushed as an e-bike. The Federal definition is very clear as to what is and isn't one. So let's go over it:
    An electric assist bicycle is defined as a two wheeled or three wheeled device primarily designed to be propulsed by use of pedals and some sort of transmission system, usually a series of sprockets and chains. It also includes an electric motor which can be co-located with the front sprocket, along the chain, or in the front or rear hub. The motor activation will co-inside with the forward movement of the device. Assistance is limited to three classes:
    Class 1. This class is limited to assist only and has no throttle. Power is limited to a maximum of 1/2 HP or 450w. Speed will be limited to 20 MPH/32 kph maximum. At that speed, assist will automatically disable. Various levels of assist can be provided but are not required.
    Class 2. As above but includes a manual throttle. Such devices must not be able to move without pedaling first.
    Class 3. As with Class 1, but power levels increase to a maximum of 1HP or 750 w. Speeds increase to 28 MPH.
    Anything that exceeds these limits fall under either a Motor-Pedal (MoPed) or a low-power motorcycle.
    California has only applied the Federal definition in a strict manner.
    Also, these definitions do NOT apply to bicycles with auxiliary gasoline power.

If I am on private land, under the statutes in my state, I can operate it on the dirt and beyond 20 mph. I.e. on my land or as a guest on private land those laws specifically don’t apply. Even drunk drinking requires operation on a public way. I can drive in circles tanked on my own land. Oregon is trying to adopt similar legislation in that they are trying to prevent legal class 3 ebikes from being in bike lanes as well. The ironic part for me is this "crackdown" for the safety of the pedestrians, when have they ever cared about the safety of pedestrians. What happens when a driver hits a pedestrian, it's explained away, let go as a warning, etc... Drivers aren't even held responsible for hitting pedestrians and doing a helluva a lot more harm than any ebike will, yet they are trying to ban ebikes. Ebikes are just a fraction of the issue car drivers are.

    Class one 20 mph top speed pedal assist only, class two 20 mph top speed with a thumb or twist throttle and pedal assist, class three 28 mph top speed with speed with a thumb or twist throttle top speed of 20 mph and pedal assist top speed of 28 mph. All are legal electric bicycles. Surron, E-RidePro, Talaria are all off-road electric motorcycles and are not legal to ride on the road or bike lanes. The Police can impound them at any time. It is like riding an off-road internal combustion motorcycle on the road or sidewalks, it is illegal. I own an E-RidePro SS first generation and I will not ride it on the road or on the bike paths, especially in Redondo Beach, Hermosa Beach and Manhattan Beach, they will impound your bike even if you ride slower than 20 mph and wear a helmet, they don’t care, illegal is illegal.

    I am a cyclist, primarily mountain bike. I have ridden a few e-bikes (Class 1), and my wife owns one, and a few of the "bikes" that will be affect by this change in legal definition in California.
    Coming in HOT! The information he (or "you" if OP reads this, which I greatly doubt) gives at the VERY start regarding class one e-bike is WRONG (high price d/t low wt, etc.) It is because they HAVE to be PEDALLED to operate (aka: move at all). The motor assists the rider, and you can build a decently priced one for a low cost for commuting (about $800 US), I've seen em. Class 1 (one) in California is what is known as a pedelec around most of of the world, again this means to move they require the use of the pedals. THIS is why the "BAN". Anything else is a motor bike, or at best a MOPED.
    The rough legal definition of a motorbike, in most jurisdictions, is it is propelled primarily (like 95%) by a "motor": there is an energy source (fuel, battery, compressed farts...) that allows a motor to create ALL the POWER (outside of wind, gravity, the initial push off...maybe... to shut down the trolls) that allows it to move. MOPEDS are all this with the possibility of assisting the motor by pedalling, but not much, under 30% is the usual amount, if its even specified. The flip side, trying to ONLY pedal a moped (the old gas ones from the 60's to 80's esp) SUUUCKS. All these fat tired "E-BIKES" are actually electric mopeds (lots of friction, and super heavy, like +>70#). Most cyclist (people who regularly ride bicycles of any sort) refer to as BSO's (bike shaped objects). THIS is why the legal changes, because a ridiculous # of mopeds / motorcycles are being sold as BIKES, and yes skirting all sort of laws and taxes as a result. Hell the new Seguay "e-bikes" don't even have padals as far as I can tell they are just ELECTRIC MOTOR BIKES. I know moto guys call their rides, including Harleys etc. bikes but that's a hold over because the FIRST motorcycles were literally bicycles with motors attached. Legally a BIKE has to be powered primarily by the rider.
    My counter argument: Demand this, pedelecs designed for commuter / road usage should have a 32 mph / 51kph (not the current 20mph 32 Kph) speed limit to make them useful, and an actual vehicle alternative. In some places like most of europe its 16mph / 25kph WTF! .Outside of special use; like mountain biking, where the 20mph / 32kph limit makes all kinds of sense (speaking as an high level mountain biker. If you read thanks. And lobby for that change!

    Agreed, the e-bike belongs to the owners property but to modify the item results in the expiration of warranty and thus the manufacture cannot be held liable for any damages or injuries to may happen. Same affects the misuse. Of course in the state of Cali where it's so liberal they need to come up with new restrictions to minimize the risk. btw, they should also legislate for kids not being on the internet before the age of..., idk, cuz they are not able to handle it, lol.

    This is what will happen when you no longer have what was considered an e-bike:
    You'll pay DMV fees
    Pay annual registration fees
    Pay for insurance to ride
    Have to get a moto designation on your drivers license
    Put a plate on the back of your bike
    Have to have it approved by a State Inspector which will be another fee
    Pay for a title
    Obey all traffic laws and that means stopping at all stop signs and no riding on sidewalks or cutting thru private property like gas stations or restaurants, etc

    I have been riding an Ebike since 2019. I was the first person in my city to ride one. Well, I got an upgrade kit for my existing two wheeled recumbent. A 48v 500w direct drive hub motor. And it moves me along nicely. I can top out at 20mph on flat ground, with a light load. But normally I cruise at about 14mph. Which is just fine with me. Now as for battery fires, that's a simple one. Each Ebike battery has what is called a BMS, or Battery Maintenance System. Which controls the current, during charging and discharging. The charger for my Ebike batter is a 2amp hour charger. But I fear that most fires are started by people using a higher amperage charger, who's BMS will not handle it. As far as I am concerned, any Ebike that can do 25+mph, even if it does have pedals, is an Electric Moped and you should need a license to ride it. Oh, and my Ebike has the PAS system, and a Throttle.

      i build my battery self and choose like a 40 euro bms that gives me almost to many options. like voltage drop and short circuit protection. its 1.1kwh.
      i think its what quality bms they install and how the battery pack is build. Because if it is cheaply made and some little ding punctures a cel or shorts it that bms won't safe it. it only protects the collection of cels wired to it and the main + and - . If you look at the price of those cels you see how much the cost is of a battery pack to build. how much they make or how cheap they try to build them.

    • @royalsd

    As a volunteer firefighter and e-bike enthusiast, in my sixties, my observations include that some folks have been taking their e-bikes into hotels (and presumably charging them). I feel that hotels should either prohibit the batteries from being stored inside their facilities or should clear this practice with their fire departments and disclose this practice to all consumers before they rent a room. I suspect that eventually, we will have a major incident of an e-bike fire in a hotel.

    • @royalsd
      @royalsd 20 днів тому

      Big issue as well is the type of batteries used, I ride electric unicycles and the batteries we use are Samsung 50s cells, which have no batter fires reported ever since the wheels started using it. Also metal casing to avoid punctures and waterproofing to avoid water ingress, because the community is really harsh on the companies to push good safety features

You get however many of those you need or wish to use. You do not get to have one 2 wheeled vehicle that can be used legally for every purpose.

    It's when our infrastructure (which is supposed to protect us from motor vehicles) gets taken over by what are motorcycles-in-all-but-name that I worry. Use the roads if you want to have fun with them!

  • @itzcaseykc
    @itzcaseykc 16 днів тому

    You brought up some good items to be considered. Kids riding around, hitting car windows, etc, making others feel unsafe.
    The problem that people as a whole, are having with ebikes & peddle bikes is this: bikes don't drive themselves (with the exception of a very few high-end techno bikes). It's the person operating them in a reckless & obnoxious way that should be dealt with... not the bike themselves. The same principle applies to guns and their owners versus criminals using a weapon when perpetrating a crime.
    The drawback to all of this hogwash is that too many people are lazy and just go with the flow that the Liberal nutjobs make/take when meeting out punishments. They don't use their minds but their overinflated egos & *feelings* when confronting issues like this.
    Yeah, people love to ban anything & everything they don't like rather than... is it dangerous to own & operate at a given age range.
    IMHO, an ebike that goes faster than 25/30 MPH should never be sold *for a person under 15 years of age to operate.* Motorized vehicles apart from dirt bikes should not be in a child's possession. Let them peddle their way to-n-from somewhere, or have someone drive them.

  • @badabing8884
    @badabing8884 22 дні тому

    The problem with e-bikes is the idiots who won’t ride them responsibly and with due consideration for others. Even on my e-bike I tell others to ride properly and they don’t like it and won’t be told what to do. There are no consequences for them not to ride responsibly. So, no doubt sooner or later they will come with more restrictions and I am talking about e-bikes here in the UK where legal e-bikes are restricted to 250Ws, speeds 15.5mph and throttles to 3.7mph.
    There comes a point when an e-bike is no longer a bike and it really is a motorbike.

That will cause issues down the road. As for the street, I see issues where people are riding on the sidewalks on throttle powered ebikes. For me, I do not get why we have not changed to classify ebikes with a throttle classified as a E-moped that has to be registered and has to obey the rules of the road

    Why would this dude claim this is a ban? High-powered e-bikes are not banned, they are just not classified anymore as "bicycles." You will always be able to buy a high-powered bike but you will have to treat it like a comparable gas-powered bike, like a moped. It may have to be licensed and cannot be ridden in pedestrian areas. It is not a f'n ban. The point is to protect pedestrians.
