I don't know how much to say thanks for this amazing video , and I have a peace of mind knowing my alternator won't damage electronic parts if it goes bad, those vehicles are amazing. Thank you again.
I've heard of alternators overcharging but in my 25 years experience I've never seen it happen till this video. I'm pretty sure that the over voltage blew out those front headlights for sure. I never get tired of watching Vito diagnosis these weird symptoms on MB. He really is a very talented mechanic.
This problem of shutting off is very similar to my 2014 ML350. None of the techs I have taken it to can resolve the problem. The last thing I want to do is take it to a dealer and pay those astronomical way off prices to have it repaired (e.g. $800 for A $170 BATTERY OR $400 TO EXAMINE AN ISSUE WHEN MOST TECHS DO IT FOR FREE) Hopefully this is the solution, will keep you informed. Thank you Vito.
it happened to me too, thanks for the vodeo.. it help me a lot, in my case a day after this happened, the alternator just give up and red batterry light came on. thanks again.. 👍👍
I just got another ML350 with a dozen silly problem. Alternator, starter, wrong battery (H6 instead of H8), fuel pump, steering pump, struts. Everything I had to do in 10 years on my 1st one, I had to do on this one in 6 months. The kicker was the blown up AC compressor, it had a quarter-sized hole in it. I got it for pretty cheap though. I'll still buy it again in a second just for having another chance to learn this truck.
Same story with my 2003 ml350, just replaced voltage regulator, easiest job, unscrew 2 bolts and that is it. 30USD part. Who told you that it is not easy to do. 1 hour job overall.
The voltage regulator is internal and you can't really get just the regulator by itself, at least here in USA I haven't heard of. If you have an old school Benz then yes. Starting late 90's- no
@@VITOSGARAGEDid you read what i have written? "2003 ml350", exactly the same as in video, made for US market, with factory installed alternator. @@Ravenola New Bosch alternator was $150. Just install a new alternator man. Your bearings are gonna go bad soon anyways and other internal parts. Just install the whole new thing and have a piece of mind..
@@VITOSGARAGE Already did, changed all bearings (2) and regulator. 2 years passed. And main point here is that voltage regulator is changeable part and easy to change. That is it. Of course it is easier to change whole parts with new ones, but money my friend. If I have money I would change whole car with new one. :) Good luck.

I changed the air suspension compressor on a 08 GL 450, after that ,the engine starts, but after a few seconds when the compressor starts it stalls, do you think it could be the same issue?
Could it be a recalled alternator, sometimes it happens, check the recall notice, by putting your cars information it will show all the recalls that particular model may have
Not sure about the recalls. I don’t think they have the alternator recalls on M112 engines. Those alternators actually rarely go bad. But in this case, it went bad by overcharging
My 07 w211 E-class is shutting off when idle and driving the lights all flash real quick but my battery is low and every morning I lose comms with the instrument panel and have to let it run for 10 seconds and restart it. I guess my alternator is starting to go!
Hi Vito great video. Have you ever experienced a ml320 w163 not shutting off? It does it randomly. I have to pull fuses to turn it off. Any idea what this might be?
Hello sir. Thank you! Is this what your W163 is doing right now? Is it an intermittent issue? When the problem occurs, have you tried wiggling the key and the actual ignition? Have you tried tapping on the ignition? I really feel like it’s the starter ignition module (where you put the key in). What year is your car? Do you have a key fob on yours or does it have a mechanical key to start it?
@@VITOSGARAGE hello, thank you for replying. The problem is intermittent. I haven’t tried doing anything with the key. I’ve just tried the different key and waiting. After that I started to pull fuses. It’s a 2002 and it has key and key fob combo like the 2000 Jetta’s.
I think the problem you’re having is an ignition switch or the whole lock cylinder. You have to get to the back of the ignition switch and check the wiring. When you turn off the truck, and if it doesn’t turn off, you can use a test light and see if you still have power coming out of the ignition switch on a couple of wires. If you do have power, your ignition switch is bad. Wiring schematic is your best friend in this case. However, if you don’t want to test it out, you can try replacing the ignition switch.
What was that loud knocking coming from the engine? Almost sounds like a rod. If you push the bushings in the ears/brackets for the alternator flat to the inside of the ear the alternator will slide right in. Just use a pair of channel locks. No lube needed. I found out the hard way taking my alternator in and out several times back when I was having trouble with my 01 e320. I have never heard of one overcharging but I guess if the regulator stuck it could do that. I would have just replaced the regulator. They are not to hard to get at. With an overcharge situation you know the alternator is working just fine. Those alternators are not cheap!
It’s easier and faster to replace the whole alternator. It was over $200 for new Bosch unit and it has a warranty. And no, that’s not a rod knock. The car has been sitting for a while and the lifters are trying to wake up. The truck is doing amazing. We drove it 250 miles that day
@@VITOSGARAGE You actually lucked out that it was a Bosch. Mine was a Valeo which mercedes, BMW and other European car makers used at random. I think the alternator is actually a Bosch because my old one had Bosch stickers on it but the volt regulator and the way it fit on it are different. After trying a Bosch regulator, which as I said didn't fit, then Valeo which didn't fix the problem, I got a rebuilt Valeo, which didn't work and then got a second one which did. So I took the alternator on and off at least 5 times. I got good at it though! Lol AutoZone wanted over $400 for a new one so I know the dealer would want more. After the hassle with the rebuilt ones which weren't that cheap, I could have gotten a new one on line for $235. What I was never able to find out was if I could have put a Bosch unit on and not had a problem with it.
