Here's the story of the Not So Scary Bear by Steiff if you are interested. I'm not sure if Steiff wrote the story, but they made a plush bear that inspired the paperweight that came with this year's hobonichi purchases. Misunderstood / Not So Scary Bear Story Part 1: Did you know that there are two kinds of teddy bears? Teddy bears that live in houses and wild teddy bears with no home. Once upon a time in a land far away there was a wild bear named Ohto. He had sharp teeth and sharp claws and people would run away when they saw him. Even though Ohto always wore a mask so he wouldn't scare the people, no one would take him home. One day Ohto saw a store with a beautiful show window with many bears all lined up. All of the bears were cute and many people walked into the store to take them home. Ohto worked up the courage to talk to the owner. "This is a wonderful store. Would you put me on your shelf too?" The blond haired blue eyed store owner had a troubled look on his face. He said, "I'm sorry. We only carry bears made in Germany." The man looked quite sorry, and after some thought he said, "I have an idea. We could make a bear just like you in Germany!" Everyday many bears are born in the German factory. Ohto was happy. What kind of place could Germany be? Ohto got a fluttering in his chest.
Aww, that kind feedback means so much to me. I'm so glad my videos have been helpful. Thank you for taking the time to tell me! Have a wonderful week and happy planning.
I just went and ordered myself the banana yellow weeks. I was trying to decide if I needed one and while I didn’t, I really wanted one and you helped me decide. I ordered off the Hobonichi site you mentioned and even with shipping it was less expensive than Amazon. Jet pens is out and I don’t want to wait. Thanks for your video! I can’t wait to receive my orange box.
I couldn't get to this video fast enough. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I have an A6 English version that I am LOVING! I love the size. Right now I'm just playing with it and not really using it for planning. Started off with daily brain dumps. I'm tempted to get a Weeks. We shall see if I cave. I keep stalking Jet Pens.
LOL...I know the feeling Jen....I know it all too well! Last year I played and tested out things in all my Hobonichi's. This year I am really giving them a go for planning! Have a great evening:)
A few things: They are not all Monday starts. Read the descriptions to see which are Sunday starts. The paper is designed for fountain pens. Some inks do bleed through. Alcohol based inks for example, will bleed. If you don't order from Hobonichi, the prices are higher to make up for shipping since whoever is selling it had to pay for shipping. The Japanese school year starts in April, which is why they have April starts. The books are sturdy, but some do start coming apart. The pen is a Uni Jetstream. It's a hybrid ink (which means it's mixed with gel ink). You can buy Jet Stream pens from other sources, like Jet Pens.
Awesome video, so much fun looking at all they have to offer. I love my weeks so far, got an April start as well but have been able to play in it for two weeks already ♥️.
Thank youuuuu!!!! I loved this video!!! I’ve been in the cousin, weeks and A6 (for memory journaling) since Jan and I’m in love with all of them! P.S. My plastic weeks cover pen loop does stay open now and it has a wider Coleto pen in it. So it you decide you need to give it a try again later, it does start to stay open over time. Thanks again!🙌🏼
Thank you for taking time to share:) I am so glad to know that about the pen loop in the weeks! I might just have to give it another try bc having the pen hooked on with it is handy even at home;) I love hearing how much you love your Hobonichis!
This is the best video! I just started using the weeks three weeks ago and my English A6 for journaling a couple days ago. I love Hobonichi! The only thing is, my pen doesn't write well at all. I don't know if the ink is dry or what. I love your A5 Cousin cover!!! Thank you so much for this video.
I am so glad you enjoyed this video;) Thanks for taking time to share;) I would try sevearl pens on a "pen test" page to see what you like best on that paper;) Enjoy your journaling!
Just fyi, some covers or products do sell out on release, so if you want something on day 1 and also day 2/3 you can place an order and put on hold at checkout until you are done ordering over the three days. Then you just release the order. I *think you can hold orders up to 60 or maybe 90 days. Love your videos
I’m really thinking to switch my planner. I’m currently using a simplified planner by Emily Ley. I’m a student so I couldn’t bring the simplified around me. So I think the hobonichi will be easier for me.
I think a Hobonichi would be perfect for a student. As long as you like the Tomoe River paper then it is an amazing book! And if you want it even smaller and less weight then get the Avec (which is half a year at once;) If you don't need daily pages and don't like the tomoe river paper the other planner I recommend to students is the Passion Planner:)
Misunderstood Bear Story Part 2: A teddy born in Germany got on a boat Big waves, big wind, big storms Giant seagulls and scary jellyfish After many trials and tribulations He fell into a deep sleep When Teddy woke up he was face to face with a wild teddy bear that looked just like him. Ohto looked at Teddy with a quizzical expression. "You have something in your ear," he said. Teddy didn't understand because he only spoke German. Teddy was put on the shelf with the other bears, but no one wanted to take him home. He didn't understand and felt all alone. Ohto was watching Teddy. He put a mask with a bear mouth over Teddy's mouth. Now Teddy was just like the other bears. Soon a girl came and looked at Teddy through the window. Teddy was excited, and so was Ohto. Just then the girl took the mask off Teddy's face. But the girl just smiled and hugged Teddy and walked out of the store with him. It's rumored that Ohto was also taken in by the girl and they all live happily together at her house now. But that is another story for another day. The End

The pen is an Uniball Jetstream. While the barrel color is special to Hobonichi, the pen itself is not. You can get both the pen and refills on Jetpens.
Hello! I happened to come across your video while searching for something else. I’m only 9 minutes into the video, and I’m already eager to visit your channel. 😄 Pardon my following word explosion. I know more than I should know about Hobonichi. I am by no means an expert; simply someone deeply in love with Japanese stationery Jessica did provide the accurate story behind the Not So Scary/Misunderstood Bear. One of the ideas behind the bear was a very practical one: bears have teeth; so why don’t teddy bears ever have teeth? That’s the basic idea behind Ohto. Hobonichi partnered with Steiff (in Germany), and the rest is history. I want to say Steiff is or claims to be the inventor of the teddy bear. 🤔 The recommendation to use Google Translate is also a good one. The app can use the camera on your phone to make the translation for you, and save it. Some of the quotes are worthwhile. Unfortunately, the translation isn’t very accurate. Japanese sentence structure is completely opposite to English. Verb and noun placement isn’t the same. Add to that words that don’t translate well due to cultural differences...it’s a mess. Still, Google translate has improved leaps and bounds and I find it useful for some things. (For transparency, I studied Japanese for 6 years: 4 in H.S., 2 in college. That was a looooooong time ago). My reading is poor, but useful enough for me in a bookstore. 😊 The multi-pen that came with your order is made by Mitsubishi Pencil Company. More commonly known in the US as Uni: as in Uni-ball. The multi-pen is basically a Uni Jetstream multi-pen made specially for Hobonichi. Jetstream ink is a highly regarded ballpoint ink in Japan. Jetstream and Acroball (Pilot) were created in response to consumer stereotyping of ballpoint pen ink (which, honestly, I can’t stand ballpoint pens. Give my Hobonichi pens to friends or their kids). JetPens has great information (if interested) on Jetstream and Acroball in their Guide section. Regarding retailers for Japanese stationery (in the US), JetPens is the business! Although, sadly, they do run out of Hobonichi items pretty quickly. If you’re interested in trying out Japanese stationery items, JetPens is the way to go. 9/10 their prices will be the cheapest. Free shipping only requires $25 or more in purchase. Unless you have a brick and mortar near you, they are the best option (IMO). KinoKuniya is a great brick and mortar option if you have one near you. It’s a book store that sells a lot of Japanese stationery. You can’t buy stationery from them online; only in store. The challenge I’ve had is that KinoKuniya is 7/10 more expensive than JetPens. Every now and then, it’s the other way around. Another retailer is Tokyo Pen Shop, based in the Midwest. They have a brick and mortar and online shop. I find them to be more expensive than JetPens (8/10), BUT, and this is a huge “but,” they have a connection with OEMs or distributors that I’m not sure JetPens has. Tokyo Pen Shop gets limited edition or Japan-only-release items that I’ve never seen on JetPens or anywhere that wasn’t a Japanese based retailer. I’ve purchased three limited edition Pilot Coleto multi-pens from TPS that were only released in Japan. Of course, there is also Etsy (a lot of Japanese shops on there, with the added ‘security’ of knowing you purchasing through a domestic platform) and similar sites. The Japanese equivalent would probably be Rakuten (use the Global market if you’re not familiar with them; it’s built for newbies/foreigners). Rakuten is actually more like Amazon, but the set-up kind of reminds me of Etsy. All of the shops are in Japan. Finally, when it comes to all things Hobonichi, you can always order directly from the store in Japan using their English site (1101.com /store /techo /en /). If you want the item tomorrow, it’s not ideal. But, with the exception of the fall launch for the upcoming calendar year, my items have arrived a lot sooner than I thought they would. I usually get my items within 14 days; a few times less than 10. And that thing had to come through LAX Customs (don’t get me started) before it got to USPS, to then be sent on to me. And of course, there is always Amazon. However, Amazon US is slow to get things. If you do find it sold through a US seller, it’s probably because it’s being sold a lot of places in the US already. For the less widely distributed items, it’s a luck of the draw. Usually, Prime isn’t an option, it’s shipping from Japan or another foreign country, the price is extremely marked up, and when it’s all said and done, you realize you could have just waited a few weeks and ordered from Japan. 🤭 I almost forgot about Goulet Pen Co.! The Goulet’s are awesome! Mom and Pop, online only, based in Virginia. Started as a young couple not too long out of college. They’ve been awarded one of the best places to work in their area for at least the last 3 years. They don’t specialize in Japanese stationery, but they are a great place to go if you just want to learn more about the world of ink, pen, paper, and all parts in between. My question about Hobonichi is, how do you handle the Japanese? Especially in the cousin on the bottom of each and every daily page. Does that bother you or those subscribers who use Hobonichi regularly? I just think I’d get annoyed with it being there taking up space and not being able to understand it. I’d go with the English version, but I like the A5 size.
You can cover it with Washi. The English version only comes in the A-6 Original Daily planner....like you said you can't get it in the A-5 Cousin:( I guess all of us that use Hobonichi just get used to it?! Hobonichi is a "horse of a different color" in planners. It really is completely different than what we Americans are used to. But all the elements come together for amazing little planners that you just can't anything like here!
It doesn't bother me, but every now and then, I use Google Translate on my phone to get an idea of what it says. It was worth it to me to have the A5 size.

I will check that out;) Thanks!
Good points and suggestion:) Thanks Jessica for Chiming in!
Wow very nice haul
Thank you:) Have a great week!
@@AmandasFavorites welcome dear and same to you i wish you a happy happy happy week
Love this. Thanks for the hobonichi video. I love my Hobonichi cousin avec. I have the colors cover, but I have a cheap knock off cover right now.
