Making MULLET DELICIOUS! Spearfishing catch & cook tacos
Вставка

- I always meet people that turn their noses up at mullet as a table fish. In this catch & cook I go spearfishing for a brace of thin lipped mullet in Brighton, UK. I'll show you one of my favourite ways to prepare mullet in fish tacos/tortillas with a spicy homemade slaw, grapefruit guacamole and a special batter. What do you think about eating mullet?

Hey bro watching you here in the Marshall Islands, count me in as one of your miles away buddies in diving, dive safe brotha.
I have been eating mullet in fajitas for a while now and it is by far my favourite way to enjoy mullet. I am definitely going to try your precise recipe for them. Awesome video dude, I'd score your avocado 9/10. 👍
A little late to the party here, but what a great idea to use lemonade in the batter! I always do a beer batter when I fry my fish, but I think you’ve just changed my tune. Thanks Dan!
Thanks mate! I think the sugar helps crisp things up a bit.
Love mullet Dan. Usually do them really simple seasoned and baked in the oven with a squeeze of lemon when done. But definitely going to give this a go as I can't help salivating. Looks delicious
Nan loved the pan fried in butter, salt, pepper and a dash of lemon.
Quality recipe Dan. Looked very tasty, I will have to give this one a go. Great work as usual 👍
Thanks mate, cracking lobster from the weekend!
Love the video, I'm going to try this recipe soon. I went for a short dive around the older burnt down pier a few weeks ago. It was great fun and of course the one time I don't bring a Spear Gun all the fish are out to say hello. I also spoke to another spearo I met diving that area, who had apparently shot a cod which I was surprised about.
Great cook up mate😍it’s why we all go diving, I’m doing something similar myself atm, you beat me to it 🤦♂️I was at Brighton pier quite a few yrs ago now but loved every minute of it😎
Summer already over. Time flies by. Nice video again Dan!!
Hey Danny, if you scrub the sand, the mullets will go crazy arround you.
Thx for the recipe, friday night will never be the same again.. Aiii Caramba
Sounds good.
Gonna try this before the mullet dissapear.
Thanks for sharing Dman!
I shot a mullet a couple of days ago and then watched this vid . Tacos were awesome 👌🏼🌮 nice one pal . I’ve subscribed
Cheers mate, glad you enjoyed it and the mullet.
Couldn't find any mullet so had to use dirty old coral trout but it seemed to work alright another great video dan nice recipe
.
Chef Daniel 👨🍳 awesome job
I shot my first "real" fish today, a gold mullet. Before that, I picked only easy targets like octopus and flatfish. As soon as I had finished diving, I looked if you had a video on mullets. I absolutely love your content!
Cheers Der, well done on the mullet.
@@DanielMann Thanks mate!
Great video Dan Im from Brighton and these vids really inspire me to give spearfishing ago next season 🔥
In Florida mullets are caught by the dozens with a cast net, usually for bait. I’m in Canada catching nothing at the moment. Perspective is a M.F.
Always nice to see your vids, best regards m8
Always perfect Editions and Nice video 🐟🎯🧜🏼♂️🎥👏🏼🤙🏼✌🏼
Hello fron Brazil 🇧🇷
That looks absolutely fantastic Dan!!
Great vid Daniel and tacos look good! Going to try that fish batter recipe on the local species here in Southern California. I also recommend lightly toasting the tortilla on a hot skillet for a couple minutes. If you do it right, you can get the tortilla to soften up for wrapping while also adding a crunch to the exterior! Make sure to flip over to other side every 10-20 seconds depending on how hot the skillet is.
Eyyyy another vid to watch pre classes
Good catch and good recipe.
Ciao Daniel.
Great episode as always, love the recipe - can't wait to try it!
Thanks Hâfi!
Love the video as always. Also am totally diggin the way you said “Cayenne”. Ill be saying it that way from now on. 😂 🍻
Looks fantastic! Might have to give that batter a try!
The ritz crackers definitely add something to it!
Those tacos look amazing!
Simple to do as well 👌
Great video as always 👊🏼
It looks delicious if I'm in front of you for the whole college
You called it kitchen roll! You better get back to Aus for a visit soon or the damage may be permanent.
No chance of getting there anytime soon!
I have been there one time for a sales training course. I had never the minimal idea to enter in such a water , hehehehe! Very coraugeos from your side!
OG 👌
I do it in the oven , with a bed of onions & garlic , couple of bay leaves, olive oil, white wine and tomato sauce 👌👌👌👌
Whole or just the fillets??
@@DanielMann head off ,scaled and gutted ,try it , i rather have it in the oven then sea bass , add some semi boiled potatoes into the tray around the mullet before the oven time , then everything in the oven to cook ;) 👌👌
@@DanielMann just a quick tip make sure that black part of the belly or most of it its cleaned ,has it gives a bit of bitterness 🙂 sea salt and pepper at taste 🙂
delicious danny !!
That looks rather tasty! Just realized it’s been a bit since your last upload. Hope all is well over there in the Jolly UK 🇬🇧🤩
Can confirm it was V tasty. Been very busy and on a two week holiday.
@@DanielMann my buddy and I are trying to get one more dive in before the season closes here and we shift to hunting deer and elk. Cheers mate.
@@DanielMann does that mean there's some spearfishing content from abroad to be expected?
Yes sir!
I am just wondering about the 50/50 guacamole to fish ratio.... of course it tastes good! Ha, Just teasing. Thanks for keeping us entertained, you are the best!
I dig the vid bruv and also the different angles are sick!
Im definitely going to put some of these shots in my next video cheers from Perth!
Hey Dan - I’m curious about those tall structures appearing in the background of the amusement park, about maybe 10km off-shore - do you have any idea what they are ?
Awesome vid as always btw,
and these tacos looks DELICIOUS 🤤 👌🏼
That’s the offshore wind farm.
@@DanielMann coolio 😎
Lovely Video again Dan, I used to eat Grey Mullet all the time when I lived in Gibraltar. Would go and fish for them with my dad so it's nice to see that someone else also enjoys these fish, as I think they are highly underrated 👍
Absolutely underrated.
Brighton was lookin good that day- how deep was the water that you were after the fish in? Seemed pretty shallow?
Only 6-8m. You don’t need to dive deep there nor can you actually.
Been watching since day one in Brighton, love your content mate keep it up Dan, all the best from Melbourne, Go Dees!
Thanks for the continued support mate!
The Mann is back with some kickass fishing and a bomb recipe! Never heard of grapefruit guac before, but sounds and looks delicious in that fish taco. Love your videos man!
Red grapefruit is my favourite citrus to eat. Can't get enough of them so thought why not put them in guacamole.
Gotta get those sliders bro
Hey Daniel, nice catch, my favourite part after catching is cooking, I'm saving this video of yours as I'm going to try your recipe, thanks for sharing 👍👍
Thanks David, you won’t be disappointed!
Absolutely love your videos if your ever in Israel id love to dive with you
Same here brothas 🤙🏼😉
Nice
meanwhile I'm here eating mullet sashimi lmao (Agean sea)
I've had it carpaccio in Italy before. Delightful!
@@DanielMann I know! fınally someone who understands
Awesome to see you back at the vids man! I'm actually just about to start up my own channel so love seeing you doing this so well, you're a great example!
Dan, try cooking the tortilla in a splash of olive oil in a skillet. Sooo much better. Cook it thoroughly.
Holy shit, the recipe was almost better than the spearing!
yoyoyoyoyo I'm baaaaack i feel like I'm Daniel's friend now (please reply!)
missing your videos bro
Gday mate. I just purchased a couple of innegra fin blades by DiveR. I was wondering if you may have some experiences to share for drilling it properly and secure the holes as I am planning to fit it into my Mares Razor foot pocket. Thanks again for your videos, I keep watching it in loops, specially during lockdowns. Cheers
I've been waiting on this upload. It's amazing. Thank you Dan
Great Stuff Daniel, your content is always the right amount of everything! its time you go full time here on youtube!
nice bro
Day too late, nah yellowfin tuna are off Kiama at the moment. Fish are 40 to 50 kg. Water is 18 degrees ( still cold) but vis is great.
Mullet are a delicious species of fish! (Especially like Red Mullet.) Great end-of-summer dive!
I was exactly on that spot at the beginning of September (with my son). Regrettably, water was murky and visibility was less than 1 meter. I've been in the water for 2h and half, hoping to have a better visibility, with no luck. Next week temperatures look ok. If you are planning to go there again and you'd like to share the travel expenses and a fish and chips at Captains, you'll be more than welcome. I live in London.
This was the 1st of September actually. Visibility is very dependant on the tides & prevailing winds for the days prior to diving. It doesn’t get clean that often but always a fun dive.
I rember cast netting huge mullet they where every were in this body of water I was cutting them up for bait but didn’t know they were good to eat I was 14 but I wish I wasn’t so stupid
mullet is verry good fish to eat.. i just finished last peace of smoked bass and mullet.. verry firm meat.
We had turbo mullet over the last few days... I do curry wraps...
Ok, próxima tainha não será poupada….
next mullet shall not be spared
I saw the title and the only thing I thought when I clicked was “please let this be a joke”
Negative! Love some mullet tacos.
I’ve never tried guac with grapefruit b4 hmm. I’ll have to try that out I guess
Bro super cool vid! Love the variety of camera shots:) a version of that dish will make it into 99 Spearo Recipes too. - Shrek
sitting on the fence so if u came here and made them 4me u might just change my mind :)
The proplem in our Southeast asia is our mullet are full of tiny bones(and they are tiny too)!
When you dive down do you hold some air in your mouth to get a pinch of "Frog Breathing"? aka Glossopharyngeal breathing. I've always wondered this when watching people who dive down with a snorkel for long periods.
Nope, I think freedivers use it tho but it is dangerous as lungs will expand and it could cause some damage when ascending. I personally never force breathing when going deep.
First thing, make it a habit to remove your snorkel from your mouth on or before descent (research the many reasons why if you don’t know). Some spearos “pack” their lungs like you mentioned, either using the tongue like a piston with face down and snorkel in the mouth, while others will breathe up on their back like a competition freediver. I don’t do either because it’s uncomfortable (until I get down to the fourth or fifth equalization). But I will grab an extra mouthful at the tuck to push in on the drop to replace the air used to compensate my mask.
In freediving there is virtually no risk of lung damage on a typical ascent due to expanding air since a) you’re coming up with LESS than what you took down (unlike Scuba), because you use and lose some of your air to equalize your sinuses and mask; but mostly b) as you ascend it’s super easy to release a little if you want. I personally like to swim up with some bubbles, so as I get shallower and start to feel the lung expansion I blow a little bit of air.
Oh, on the “remove the snorkel” thing…you’ll find lots and lots of info on the dangers, but for me it’s just easier to equalize since I use Frenzel and it requires some weird facial movements and sounds (for me anyways, I’ve videoed myself doing it and it’s like a Jim Carrey impersonation😆). Another thing is that the bubbles can spook the fish - I once was shallow (maybe 35-40’) and lining up a shot on a big mutton snapper when I turned my head a bit and a few bubbles went “blurble blurble blibble” from the snorkel still in my mouth and the damn thing instantly turned away to angle I couldn’t shoot. My buddy watched it happen, and gave me a huge load of grief. Then he went and shot the fish. Lesson learned.
What's your average breath hold in a dive? Nice video as always!
Depends on what fish I’m hunting but usually only 1-1:30.
@@DanielMann Thank you, it was just out of curiosity. Sometimes it looks like you're under water for an eternity XD
Another wicked video - I learn so much from watching your vids! Thanks Daniel!
Hi tried your taco delight yesterday evening with a Bass caught from Brighton pier from an October dive.It was delicious will try it with a mullet next time. Thanks for the tops tips and great channel. If you are ever down this way do drop a line if you want a dive buddy. I'm also a Southern hemisphere transplant but from South Africa...
Keep up the diving stoke.
Great to hear you enjoyed it mate!
do you rekon they are the same as the mullet in aus ? ive only ever used them for bait. top vid as always , cheers from cronulla
Similar for sure. Give them a go for eating.
That batter looks pretty interesting. Am keen to give it a crack this (Aussie) summer.
The temptation of a margarita pairing is quite high!
Give me a margarita and I’m down for just about anything!
shot a nice mullet yesterday, know how Im cooking it now!
I've only ever had mullet as Bokom in SA, have you had it? It is an acquired taste, some find if really nasty.
Great video, Daniel! Amazing job on the color grading, especially! Do you mind me asking if you're using DaVinci Resolve?
I use it sometimes for specific projects. I rushed this video out all through premiere pro but normally I do my underwater footage in Resolve.
@@DanielMann thanks for the answer really appreciated. Always a pleasure to watch your new uploads 🙂
Note to self: never watch Daniel Mann when hungry...
Not sorry!
Too many ithings.... You cannott taste the mullet
What? Mullet bad fish, only bass spoiled people would say that. Last time I went spearing I came back with big Wrasse and prepared it your style, covered in salt in the oven, it was awesome. Can’t imagine how amazing mullet would taste this way. Now must organise some weekend off spearing to try new recipe, wondering can I get some fish in Scotland, it starts getting cold already😩.
Just 1 question….white socks and flip flops? What’s with that all about🤨?
Not flip flops, Birkenstock’s!
Watching from France (PAYÉ BASQUE) just found your videos the last couple of days.. Loving it. It's so cool you don't discriminate over fish, it's been my way of spearfishing for the last 12 years, well done. And I will try your recipe, yum!
Mullet are surprisingly great , just discovered this recently after spearing some of islands here in Qld , all the oils make it 👌
Absolutely, well worth trying something different to coral trout after coral trout.
@@DanielMann absolutely , wet mammal is doing a real cool bunch of videos down south called undesirables , worth a watch if you haven’t already
Mullet is delicious and I have eaten mullet as meat balls
Do tweed mullet taste better dan?
No idea, haven’t eaten a tweed mullet in 15 years.
@@DanielMann haha
I simply bake mine with a tiny bit of butter on top salt and black pepper, and put it in a taco with sour cream, fresh avocado, tomato, onion and red cabbage. healthy and delicious you should try that. Altough the mullet i catch might have a much lighter flavor because of the location in the Mediterranean
I had a mullet from the Mediterranean I brought back from a trip once. Tasted like bass.
Mullet is/are delicious! Hope you’ll post more Catch & Cook videos from Portugal !! 🇵🇹
They are coming 💪
🐠🍽🎥🔥
Nice to see you back again bro! 👌🏽🤌🏽🐟
Here the mullets are just delicious, we used to eat them at breakfast, boiled with just salt and boiled cassava. Or fried, they tastes good but better when are in season that are fatty. Nice video as always Daniel!
Great Video Dan! I am a new subscriber and your videos are so nice to watch! Great quality!! Fish Onnn
Cheers Saju, welcome to the channel!
Hey bro Dan, I'm always watching your video's new or old. Especially we same hobby as a spearman I really like your episode bro, hopefully someday will you help me as a professional spearman, God bless you always bro where ever you are.
Cilantro?
You live in the UK bro it's coriander 🤣 ...
I think ...
Same stuff, same smell. Call it what you will 😉
🖤🖤🖤
Man I miss shooting these guys! Really tasty fish
Good fun to shoot as well when they are shoaling.
The fook happened to your accent?
i like your video quality mate, liked and subscribed 👍 keep them coming !
Cheers Aaron!
Socks n sandals gang rise up!!!
Socks n Birkenstock’s! Ultimate in comfort.
I missed this vid so much since I can't go spreafisching anymore.... Keep going that shit💪
Mullet are Fantastic Eating, glad to see you championing them. I've been Oven cooking and BBQing them for years but never fish Taco..ing them, so will try. Please a question, why remove the red meat?
Once again excellent video, thanks
Hi Stephen, I find the red meat has a very strong flavour which I don’t like that much. It also doesn’t freeze very well.
@@DanielMann
Thanks for that, I will cut that bit off on the next Mullet I put in the freezer, that's if I can find any to shoot, I have had nothing but Bass this year and I'm missing a good Mullet!
never hit the like button this fast
Another great video. Tacos look tasty, will give them a punt👌
yesterday i catch and cook a mullet 2kg unfortunately i haven't seen this video HEHE ( I NEVER EAT IT)
Next time!
DMan you back bro
Love from Greece my mom always made them shoup with celery and veggies when I catch em but I like them better taking the spine and head out and she fries them with similar stuff of your batter! Thank for posting again
