      +soimboredandtesting I think it's because a) he's actually interested in other people, not just himself, b) he's interested in particular in what other people have to say and how they express themselves, c) he really listens to the words and phrases, so, if he were a reporter (which he kind of is) interviewing a politician (which he's kind of done a few hundred times), it would be very difficult for that pol to say some dog whistle catchphrase or politicized phrase to this guy's face and get away with it, because he'd be all over that (like he was in with Senator Cruz when he was on this show and with Donald Trump too), and d) he's not nearly as freaking BORING and PEDANTIC as I'm being in laying it out like this.

      +Ava Ttoir Right! He had a political guest on who was unpopular with his audience. The studio audience booed something the man said and Stephen goes "Guys, guys. He is my guest." He performs, he's funny. He's like the hosts of the Ed Sullivan days - a Renaissance man.

      +hamsterpoop world class scientists astronomist Neil DeGrasse and high energy string theory physicist Brian Greene and top science writer George Johnson ALL have said how much smarter Colbert is than anyone in public life they've ever met.
      Lord of the Rings & Hobbit filmmaker Peter Jackson has said that for years he considered himself among the world's greatest authorities on the Tolkein's novels but that having met and tussled over Tolkein trivia with Colbert, he now says Colbert is AFA he knows the world's single greatest Tolkein authority.
      Jon Stewart says he's never met anyone smarter than Colbert.
      I think that the reason Colbert doesn't talk down to this young woman budding scientist is that Colbert doesn't talk down to anyone. But if you watch her talking to Colbert, you can tell that she's awestruck.

    I'm not trying to downplay her accomplishments by any means, but the more I engage in academia, the more I realize how far mentorship will get you...
    This girl clearly went too a very good school, where she met a very good science teacher that eventually connected her with the right mentors/teachers at Tufts. In reality, I think many others could do what she's done given the luck and opportunity.

    • @crewsadist
      @crewsadist 8 років тому +48

      +shazil888 Well, except it was her idea, which is kind of the most important thing, and that means she's got talent, so what you're really saying is that anyone given the same luck and opportunity and TALENT could do what she did ... which, when it's put that way, kind of excludes the vast majority of those with just the luck and the opportunity.

      Yes she is incredibly fortunate to have such great fellowship opportunities. The exact details from what I can tell, such as using silk fibroin was definitely the idea of a more seasoned researcher. I think what is more important is that she narrowed her research thesis to a scope which her teachers can guide her through it. That imo is the hardest part of research.

    I really appreciate the fact the Stephen Colbert not only interview famous stars and politicians, , but that he also interviews authors, journalist and in this case, a young student who accomplished something challenging. He makes it fun and inspiring, and shows that you do not have to be famous or rich to be recognized for your passion

    • @crewsadist
      @crewsadist 8 років тому +1

      +David Napiorski And I don't think either he or Fallon see themselves as in competition. As Colbert has said, he's friends with EVERY talk show host - his going onto the local public affairs channel TV this past summer to goof around with eminem isn't even nearly the second time he's done that: he LIKES spending time with other talk show folks.
      The Colbert Report made Colbert rich beyond the needs of a lifetime, so what he's doing now, for the next decade maybe more (tho I doubt that; I think he still wants to do more live show scripted work like he's done already a bit on Broadway with Soldheim - and public service type interviews with smarty pants scientist types), is really ambition fulfillment. I think ratings per se don't mean much at all to him, especially since his proved his ratings appeal on TCR and he's already expanded his audience since then, which is really all CBS has asked or expects of him.
      Remember too that CBS Letterman only rarely beat NBC Leno's ratings, even tho Leno left pretty much a zero impact on talk show culture while Letterman is a hero and model to the entire current generation of late night comedy variety talk show hosts. I'm not at all sure anyone ever again will have Letterman's cultural impact but I do think that Letterman's heritage includes WHY it is that so much of late night talk works so well. Ask all of them (well, maybe not the two English dudes), they'll all tell you they claim talk comedy variety interview show hosting DNA thru Letterman and a few of the older ones will add Johnny Carson as well, but not one of them will mention Leno.

      +Peroxide Do you know how dumb that statement makes you?

    • @crewsadist
      @crewsadist 8 років тому +3

      +Peroxide He never actually "competed' with Stewart. Stewart and Colbert co-created Colbert's show and they complimented and complemented each other's show. The Emmy Awards thing was just a running joke. But here's what was NOT a joke, and something Stewart's gone out of his way to acknowledge makes Colbert more interesting and important than him: Stewart's show didn't win it's first PEABODY award - a REPORTING award - until Colbert joined TDS, and they were co-recipients of the first won. The second PEABODY award won by TDS, in 2005, was also a shared award between Stewart and Colbert. But after Colbert left TDS for his own show on TCR, TDS did not win ANY more PEABODY awards, while Colbert and his TCR went on to win TWICE MORE.
      So, I don't know about 'compete' at all: I think if you suggested that to either or both of them, they'd just laugh at your naivete.

      Don't make assumptions. Any professor worth his/her salt, would be over joyed to work with a student who was fired up about science, math, history, etc., I would guess they would be even more enthusiastic if the student was from a lower income area. You got a problem with the educational system being funded by property taxes, at least they are where we live, which is definitely discriminatory, then work/vote, etc. to improve. But, leave this young woman out of it. I am in my 50's and this wouldn't have happened for a girl when I was her age, NEVER. No matter where she was raised.

      +Joel Travis Different schools get different amounts of funding which is used for different areas. The high school I went to had a expansive welding, autobody, machine working, and nursing addition to it, which may be uncommon in many other high schools. Her school probably invested more into different forms of science more so than trade.

      my high school had a research class for nih. Also some high schools have information for participation at a university or even entering early. UNT in denton, texas has a program called TAMS where you enter college as a junior and do research with a college professor.

    I'm also amazed at the resources, thease teens have to build some of this stuff? Where in the US do you get raw silk form? How do you figure out what is the best medium of storing your test chemicals? How do you test that the chemicals are stil active and that said pad won't degrade in harsh climates? (excessive heat or moisture)
    How do you even conduct chemical testing for deadly pathogens in your family's kitchen ( presumably?). Like how does a 17 year old get access to a lab that deals with live Ebola virus? Usually you need to be a bio major and a faculty member of top level research facility or University research team.
    If she couldn't do product testing then is this idea just fancy sounding nonsense? "it's good on paper".
    The testing life cycle for any medical device is usually a good 4-5 years of testing. Many rounds of seeking capital/ sponsorships, peer review etc...
    Was she 13 when she thought of this? Possible sure but how did she get the resources to make a working prototype?

    I think Google users are missing the point of Google's business model when it has become clear that their users do not need to visit the websites they search for to get the information on the websites. Even lost information on websites can be used to understand the information they offer. Edit: the point of searching is to learn not to know.

      +Google stop it for the prop on this segment, she just swapped out the Ebola antibodies for antibodies to a safe reagant, then added the reagant to trigger the color change. In the lab, she actually did test Ebola samples.

    • @lexa803
      @lexa803 8 років тому

      for her to test it to see if it worked she would have to have come in contact with the ebola bacteria, right? how would she have gotten a sample?

    • @inkliizii
      @inkliizii 8 років тому +4

      +Lex Auer There is probably a part of the virus that the test actually tested for - a segment of its RNA, or a protein, or something. That part could be synthesized without the rest of the virus, so that she could test it without actually needing Ebola in front of her.

Not proud that all of the comments are about her appearance. People need to grow up. This would never be happening if she were a man. Comments like that are sexist. Lets focus on her accomplishments people.

    Don't read into kindness. She is someone who cares. This happens to me all the time. people think I "am into" them when I am really just a loving person. She is trying to help Eobla victims... she isn't a standoffish person and doesn't have an agenda. Everyone leaves feeling "loved" because you are loving. Not because you are hitting on them.
