I bought this album when it came out in the 80's and sang this song every night to both my daughters when they were babies. One of these daughters, now fully grown, just had her own daughter. When I held her, I just naturally started singing Little Potato to her. I had tears of joy in my eyes. I have them again now, just recounting this. Young people now may not realize how remarkable this album was. One of the first to feature a group of men singing loving baby songs. As a man just come of age at that point in history, this was revolutionary and liberating.
For the record - no pun intended - Metamora *was* a remarkable trio - and the first album [of what amounted to a super-group ;->] was indeed a sensation - but *not* a collection of baby songs ! I think back then Grey was the only papa in the outfit ;-> And more to the point all the other tunes on the album reflected the communities they were part of: the New England hub of traditional musicians, the emerging circuit of wildly enthusiastic contra dancers from there to Appalachia, and... Ok. Lol - enough day dreaming.
I sing this to my cat, Callie. She's our little potato: an ex-feral rescue who came to us with a broken jaw, and then stayed. I remember it from Metamora's concerts back in Bloomington, IN in the 80s.
Haven't thought about this song in literally about 25 years until today... Used to hear it all the time riding to school with the NPR morning show on the car radio...
We first heard Metamora in the Moore Hall Kiva when they were taping an Our Front Porch for broadcast. We took the Potato album home, learned the song, sang it to our daughters when they came along, and now it's our granddaughters' favorite song. Our little Emma (3 years) tells us she IS a potato! Generations of potato goodness :)
In 1987, my first child, a daughter, was born. My sister-in-law gave her a gift of a tape of this song. It became my baby's special song and has remained all hers. I cry when I hear it! Today is her 31st birthday and I sent her the link so she could enjoy it all over again. Thanks, Malcolm Dalglish for this exquisite and enchanting gem!
Just before Christmas I got a cat from the Humane Society, and they named her Potato. Never thought I'd keep the name after I adopted her, but it just stuck. Then I remembered Metamora's potato song and how much I enjoyed it, so things just started falling in place. To introduce her to the family, I gave everyone a dressed up spud: Patriotic Potato, Hungry Potato, Party Potato, Sweet Potato, Sleepy Potato and Tater Vader.
Oh how much I LOVED this song when my baby was born! It gave me such a wild joy, I would dance around with her in my arms, I loved everything about this song and I still do! Hearing it brings all those happy memories back. She's 32 now... :-)
Wow, my parents used to sing me this song when I was so little, im in my teens now, this brought back alot of memories and made me think of what a neat tune this is. I love it
Moka V Same here. (Well, except I'm 21) Randomly had it pop into my head when I saw a facebook post of a tumblr post about a potato. 0.o Yeah, Occasionally, the one radio show we listened to every Saturday morning would play it. (Saturday Light Brigade, if there's any Pittsburghers out there)
My father recently died and my mother is already passed and hearing this on this sad day really helped me feel like someone was once there that remembered me as a baby. I sang this to my two babies and got to hear them perform this live with my late husband. It's incredible how a simple song stays with you and become an anthem for your loving your children.
My dad used to dance around with me to this song when I was a wee babe🥲I just now played it for my one week old newborn to keep the tradition going💕🥔👶🏼🥰
You're my little potato, you're my little potato, You're my little potato, they dug you up, You come from underground, The world is big, so big, so very big To you, it's new, it's new to you. You're my little potato, you're my little potato, You're my little potato, they dug you up, You come from underground. Let's talk about root crops (they dug you up), And lamb chops (they chew on you), And things to eat like apples And cheese and 'nanas and cream, Jellies and butter, It's late at night, I hope this little bottle helps you go to sleep. They must have grown you wild, You make a grown man a child, I'll go and play in the mud To be with you my spud (potato). When you came out looking red as a beet, You had wrinkles on the bottoms of your feet! Oh, you are so sweet potato! You're my sweet potato, You're my sweet potato, dug you up You come from underground. You smile, a smile, a little smile The world is small, so small, it's very small You're my little potato, you're my little potato, You're my little potato, they dug you up, You come from underground
Thank you 😊 I am as deaf as a damn post and didn’t get all the words , but I know them now … 👍🏼 and what a great song . I sang it to my kids too….” Back in the day “😎
My mom put a slideshow together for my Bat-mitzvah and played this. c: She used to sing it all the time when I was a baby. Everyone who understood the "joke" cried, including myself.
I sing this to my cat, he was on the news as a featured pet the day I adopted him, they played this song during his segment. Didn't even know he was the featured news kitty until I got home, he was just the kitty for me and I love that little asshole potato
I blame/thank the Saturday Light Brigade (RIP) on WYEP FM in Pittsburgh for putting this song in my head long before I thought about having children, but it never left me.
They must have grown you wild You make [your mama] a child *I'll go and play in the mud to be with you my Spud* Potato, when you came out looking red as a beet you had wrinkles on the bottoms of your feet... The. Best. Baby/Child Song. Ever. Vinyl long lost, & the baby is 42... So grateful I came looking again...
I danced with my daughter at her wedding to this beautiful little tune.
Not a dry eye in the house, including mine.
So sweet

Same here! Thanks fo much for the joy you've added to our lives with this song!
This was the song my mom sang to me as a baby in the 80s. Sometimes the memory lasts, but it's that connection that is amazing.
I have tears in my eyes just reading this, and I have no potatoes! Thanks for sharing.
Amen 👍🏼

This is the most beautiful song in the world. I love you Dad.

Same here, except I was in the kitchen with my dad in the morning and he would keep singing the song when it was over.

This song is immensely calming and cheerful.

Heard this maybe 25 years ago. Thought of it when my grand daughter was born. Wonderful song.
Baby soothing magic, thank you Lex!!❤
Oh Metalica has a new album? I really like how they've changed.
I remember when Malcolm wrote this song....or at least when he started singing it on tour, after the birth of his first child.

I heard this years ago on KUT Austin and have never forgotten it. Such a neat song!
My mother used to turn this up on KUT and sing it to me in the 80s. Hits deep now.

My kids request this song for bedtime at least once a week. 💚
Brings me back to the good old days man 😁
in the eariy 80's I met Malcolm Daglish's father at a Unitaian church service in Bloomington In and thanked him for raising such a talented son.
I blame/thank the Saturday Light Brigade (RIP) on WYEP FM in Pittsburgh for putting this song in my head long before I thought about having children, but it never left me.
Saturday Light Brigade continues today, you can listen to it streaming online!
Our theme song for our daughter, born in Missoula in 1983!
One of my favorite songs.

This is the WEIRDEST song and yet WAY too many of my friends and relatives have glommed onto it

Wasn't this song used as a radio show theme song?
My mom used to sing this to me growing up. She just claimed that she made up the song. So i looked it up. She lied.
