This was exactly what I was looking for! I just picked one up from Walmart for $39.99CDN and noticed it had no mention of a USB cable. Walmart's web site only mentions Bluetooth as connectivity. Based on your review I think I'll hang on to it. I was wondering if it could be used as a web cam, you answered that question (sadly it's probably not much better than my Microsoft HD cam). I also really wanted to know about the ports and you answered those questions. To me the Monba looked like it was sharper and better quality. Thanks for doing such an in-depth review!
Glad the video was useful. Another comment had one with older firmware that didn't have the webcam feature, but I managed to extract it from mine and send it to him. Vivitar gives no support for this camera which is disappointing. I've still been unable to buy a second battery for it.
@@ScottJWaldron Thank you, just as a followup: several people on the Walmart web site mentioned that their camera was used despite the fact that it's shrink wrapped in a blister plastic package. I found the same when I opened my camera, the back display had some minor scratches and it was pretty dirty. The front display was covered with a picture and when I peeled that picture back I found a plastic green piece hanging out the camera (which didn't seemed like it belonged inside the camera). I hooked mine up to my computer and was able to use it with OBS under Xubuntu Linux (so it also works in Linux, shows up as an Android camera). The menus were a bit different, but the middle option (PC Camera I think) did the trick. I haven't purchased a TF card yet, but I read somewhere that you want to make sure you buy a card with the U3 (versus U1) for 4K (as you mentioned it only does 720 as a web cam). Thanks again, I might try to track down a battery on AliExpress (mine came with one, but a second is always handy).
That green plastic was probably covering the LCD screen from the supplier of the screen. I had that as well. It's most likely poor quality control in the manufacturing process. Let me know if you figure out exactly what this battery is. I'm not sure why the camera calls it a "TF" card in the menu system because it takes micro SD cards. I haven't run into any speed issues with cards. I'd suggest a "class 10" or v30 card, but I just tested 4k30 with an older class 4 16GB Sandisk card and it recorded for 6 minutes without issue with no signs of it stopping. I don't think the bitrate is that high.
I'm trying to come up with a reason to buy the Gopro Hero 8, though it's hard to tell how much better image quality would be compared to this stuff even after watching a bunch of videos. I have use cases for a small all-in-one solution, but I'm thinking I should wait another generation. Hopefully they add a built-in preview screen to the front. Their add-ons are great and all but add bulk and a lot of expense. The competition appear to have questionable audio quality so I wouldn't be gaining much getting the DJI Osmo Pocket or Insta360 One R. Gopro appears to at least have figured out how to get decent audio.
Hey I was just wondering, when setting up the Vivitar, how do you get the front screen to work. I just got it a few days ago and can’t figure out how to set up/turn on the front screen. Great review! 👏
I drilled holes in the plastic underwater cover on mine so the microphone would work in the plastic underwater case, you need to keep it in the case, if you bump it or drop it it breaks the screen, front or back, so keep it in the underwater case to protect it and drill some holes for the audio and just don't use it under water anymore (DVR922). $69 at wal mart and $30 for a 128gb memory card and adapter to regular size memory card. The plastic underwater cover is free with it.
This action camera has no way of taking audio input. If you want to do that you will need something like a lapel microphone and audio recorder you can put in your pocket or whatever. Then you'd need to sync that audio with the audio of the action camera in a video editing program. It's not easy to do but it is possible.
The sound isnt working on mine that i just bought. Any advice on this? I can hear the clicks when i press buttons but was watching the videos back on my laptop i hear nothing.
Check that the "RecordingSound" option is selected. When the camera is on, to get to the setting menu you need to press the power button to cycle the screens until you see the big yellow gear icon and then press the other button on the top. The first tab of options will have that setting. Make sure it has a checkbox. You can tell if the camera is recording audio or not by the little microphone icon in the lower left of the main video screen. The icon will have a slash through it if audio is not being recorded.
So i am trying to create a multicamera setup on an extremely low budget. I also wanted the recording all to be on one stream. I made a video called monster meatball using 4 homedepot action cameras i hooked them directly into the USB ports on the pc using manycams. It was great except for one thing. The hightest resolution was 720p so it was super grainy and could not show quailty of the food. Since it is a cooking show i have to have good image quality to make people hungry lol. Also i didnt take into consideration the length if time i could film one of the cameras overheated and died. when you put it on the PC does it show the option to use it as a webcam?
Yeah, there is a "PC Camera" option. Tried it on Windows 10 with the built-in camera app and it worked. The screens on the action camera do not work in this mode. It's kind of finicky because you will have to do that to the camera every time you want to. Didn't I show this in the video? Thought I had a sequence in it about webcam use. Can't recall.
@@ScottJWaldron thanks for trying to help me

I sent you a message on instagram in the bio of your channel not to be floating your comments
How many hours does it last
Recording on the battery? Maybe 45 minutes tops. Also I've been unable to find a compatible replacement battery for it.
@@ScottJWaldron I can send you a picture from Amazon
@@rudy7854 I have no way of knowing if it would work. You should try to contact vivitar.
@@ScottJWaldron I have a picture from Amazon I want to send it to you
@@rudy7854 Post the amazon link here. I will see it but it won't show up publically due to how I have comments setup to not display links automatically.
How do I get the image from being upside down when trying to record video?
I'm guessing you put on the "image rotation" setting by accident. You need to get into the settings. Press the on/off button (looking at the back screen it's the top left button) until you see a large cog icon. When that shows up press the top start/stop button (top right button). You should see the settings now. Go to the third tab (icon with three horizontal lines). The forth item in the list is "Image Rotation". Scroll down to it with the side WIFI button on the camera. When you are on the image rotation item press the start/stop button to turn the checkbox off.
@@ScottJWaldron ok awesome thanks that helped out!
I have another question? I just placed a brand new SD card in it and never used it but it keeps saying insufficient space on TF card
