  • When Americans visit Germany, there is one thing different that they ALWAYS comment on and are SHOCKED by! We all know there are differences between Germany and America, but what is this one thing you don't see in the US that you do see in Germany at much higher rates?? We have already done videos on how much German homes love fresh air (Lüften), passion for health in Germany, hiking in beautiful German forests, and more! But, today we discuss this big difference between German Culture and American Culture we have observed, what the facts actually show and why this one thing possibly undoes the rest! 😊

US Anti smoking campaign ...In the Hollywood movies of the mid 90ties till early 2000 especially in thrillers or horror movies fairly every movie protagonist in film smoking cigarettes died at one point of the story then truely horribly by accident or murder during the film and those who didn´t smoke survived the story..Respectively playing a victim in those movies includes smoking...It became so obvious during that time period as like as a Spoiler. Me and my friends even started to bet while watching those films about how many movie minutes those smokers had left till they die in a very cruel way..

"Raucher" is a noun and means "smoker" and "rauchen" is what a smoker does: "smoking". But "räuchern" is a verb and it means "to cure". You can use it on salmon (Räucherlachs), saussages (Rauchwurst) and meat (Rauchfleisch) they are all cured by "räuchern".

Smoking in Germany used to be way more popular. I remember growing up, that it was still allowed to smoke indoors, vending machines had no control for the age of the buyer and there was advertisement everywhere. In school you were only one of the cool kids if you smoked. Ever since they implemented the age check at machines, the ban if smoking indoors and in train stations, the ban of advertisement and making it way more expensive, the number of smokers decreased. I used to know many people who smoked, but nowadays I know barely anyone and even if someone smokes they do it mostly for pleasure.

Yeah, it's actually pretty remarkable. I think I was 14, when the Age Restriction was still only 16. I don't know, when deutsche Bahn banned smoking, but I remember when I was in Kindergarden, there were still smoking wagons. And our Kindergarden Group was forced to ride with that wagon, since most others were to full. We shared the wagon with only two other passangers, and those two ladies didn't give a Crap either and smoked NON STOP for the entire duration of our Trip, which wasn't that nice.
Basically the whole culture around that has changed. I also remember, when I was 8 or 9 or something, I was on vaccation at a Family we know. The parents were chain Smokers as well, and they would smoke NON STOP inside the appartment and especially inside their fucking car - which isn't that great, when you got 3(!) Children

@@sagichdirdochnicht4653 You sure feel like I do about smoking. When I lived in Germany in 1968-1970, I had many teenage friends and just about everyone of them smoked. I didn't smoke and I hated the smell of cigarettes. I often wondered how could so many young kids want to smoke!!! I think one of the reasons for my distaste of cigarette smoke is my dad was a chain smoker and when us 3 little kids got in the back seat of the family car and would take trips with the windows rolled up we all got sick and had to throw up. My mother was allergic to nicotine and I think us kids inherited that from her. It makes my head hurt, my throat hurt and if I am subjected to it for a long time it is as if I just swallowed a major dose of caffeine. I get the shakes. We used to visit the parents of our former Exchange Student and both his parents smoked non-stop. They even smoked at the eating table. We would go to their favorite beer drinking place and the air inside was filled with smoke. I pretended I was having a great time but all I could think of was "get me out of here so I can breathe some fresh air!!" My wife and I slept upstairs in their house but after we would go to bed we could smell the cigarette smoke coming from their bedroom downstairs. We could hardly fall asleep, and I had fitful nights. We loved them dearly and never said anything. After all, it was THEIR home and we were guests. Not my place to ask them to stop smoking. We had a wonderful and miserable time all at the same time! We could smell the smoke in our clothing and even our hair! And the last thing I want to smell is cigarette smoke in a restaurant while I'm trying to enjoy my meal. I'm not against smokers. I think they should just be considerate of others.

Thankfully, really times have changed. Even most Smokers don't smoke inside their Appartment or even car. Just because it would smell horrible. 20 years ago and everyone was smoking inside the stupid sleeping room. Still have absolutely no fucking Idea how one could smoke where tthey would sleep.
And yep, can't talk to the freaking adults about their smoking behaviour. It could just be, that the relatives I've had were fucking Idiots who don't care about the Kids (seriously tough, they are indeed Idiots...), but had made the experience. If you are a child or non smoker, inhale nice and deeply, ain't gonna get fresh air for a frew hours. And don't fucking DARE to ask if someone could have the decency to not smoke on a fucking 10 Minute trip. Great times..........
I'm absolutely not against smoking or anything. Not even inside ones Home or Car - as long as nobody is with/near them. And the nice thing is, it kinda seems like we are now at this point. I know Mothers in my age (Mid to end 20's) who smoke, but N E V E R anywhere near a child. Not like when I was a child and was forced to ride in a car with 2 Chain Smokers, that couldn't even stop for a fucking 10 Minute ride. Never inside the Appartment (children....) and so on. Also, pretty much the whole country has some anti smoking laws nowadays. Which I find fantastic, even tough I was smoking myself for a few years. Even if you smoke, you don't wanna have that crap right next to your face when you do eat. Fucking disgusting.

Funny thing is, in places around the world swearing is very, very common. And if someone gets Butthurt by the use - nobody seems to care about those Snowflakes feelings.
Glad you aren't offended tough. In my experience, it's really telling when someone can't handle a little "FUCK!". I suppose those people have fantastic lives tough wiith a ton of ignorance about anything they don't care. In my personal experience, the only way to endure politics for example is to be able to swear all loud, when another corrupt piece of Shit gets shoved down another few Million Euros down their Arses and NOTHING happens. That, or Drugs. However, since I'm not really able to live, earn money, anything, if I started drinking in the Morning, I'm just gonna continue cursing all the time. Smoking was really a problem when I was young. Everybody was smoking everywhere, small children took their parent's cigarettes and started smoking. There was smoke in the homes, in the school toilets (as smoking was forbidden in schools), in the restaurants. Only churches were places without smoke. Again and again, they talked about lung cancer, but nobody would do anything against it. Except for increasing the taxes/prices. Finally ads for cigarettes was forbidden. Some years ago, smoking in restaurants was prohibited and bit later in all public buildings, as it is today. I guess two or three years ago the packages have to show warning against smoking The number of lung cancer's going quite down, finally.

"räuchern" and "rauchen" are very different meanings, every "Rauch" (=Smoke")-related word showing the "ä" Umlaut always means a kind of a "incense", only the "rauch-" relates to "smoking" as in inhaling smoke from cigarettes, pipes etc.. So a "Räuchermännchen", though it seems to "smoke" by holding a pipe and letting out the incense smoke through the "mouth", the "Räucher-" refers to the incense, not to the act of "smoking". OK, the further meaning of "räuchern" regarding "smoking meat" as in "smoked salmon" or "smoked ham" or such doesn't help to differ between the meanings, as well as that a fire "raucht" (=emits smoke") but these two word roots mean in the end very distinct different things, they aren't synonyms.

I found an interesting article about smoking, but it's in German, and I am not sure whether I may post a link here, but I'll try:
    www.heise.de/tp/features/Hauptsache-nikotinabhaengig-ein-notwendiger-Nachtrag-zum-diesjaehrigen-Weltnichtrauchertag-4944664.html?seite=all
In essence, the article analyses a study about smoking, and says that by 2013, about 25% of the adult population in Germany (that means, 18 or older) were smokers, but at ages between 20 and 50, almost 40% did smoke, with more men than women smoking.
The next paragraph in the study, however, is much more interesting: The age at which young people start smoking seems to go DOWN, being at 14 now, although Germany RAISED the legal smoking age from sixteen to eighteen. Now that's really interesting to me, being an amateur sociologist. Doesn't that seem like forbidden things attract young people because they are forbidden?
Take a look at the Netherlands: They never had a serious problem with misuse of marijuana, BECAUSE IT WAS LEGAL and still is. You forbid something, you create a problem.
Or, on the other hand, you ORDER people to do something, and they will obey for a while, but not forever. You can currently see that here in Germany with the "anti-Corona demonstrations". Silly name created by the media, if you allow me that remark: You cannot demonstrate against a virus, because it has no ears. But people have, and putting on a face mask in crowds really should be no problem.
I think other countries, like Sweden, do it better: They appeal to solidarity rather than ruling by decree. I'm a smoker, but I don't smoke where children are around, but I also confess to being a smoker. Smoking makes you addicted, that's for sure, and I started smoking at 15, because, see above: It was illegal. Now don't call me a revolutionary, because I knew girls who were 13 and had a fag in their mouth. I rather was one of the shy guys.
The Räuchermännchen, I am not sure. Fumigation used to be an old tradition before modern disinfectants were invented, and people used to burn some scented sulfur in their houses, which certainly wasn't healthy. Fumigators, according to a BBC documentary, had a very short life. Modern Räuchermännchen, however, use allegedly harmless substances, and if you want it still more harmless, use an Aromalampe with water and etheric oil (I recommend lemon grass), and a Teelicht from IKEA: (No, I don't recommend going to IKEA. You always walk out with things you don't need.)
The Nazis and smoking: Their biggest problem was, as soon as the US entered the war, that their tobacco supplies came to a halt. But their soldiers insisted on having cigarettes, so Germany in those days started growing tobacco, and that's still a small industry subsidized by the German government and the EU. Yes, THE European Union that made warning signs on cigarette packages mandatory.
The Bros. Albrecht: I know the story, and it's very similar to the Adidas and Puma division between two brothers. Sad for which simple reasons a family can break apart; but on the other hand: They both were doing very well, one with cigarettes, one without.
Flying with a cigarette: My first and last flight with a cigarette was on a Boeing 747 (yes, that big old jet airliner) out of AMS (Amsterdam, Netherlands) into BOM (Bombay, nowadays Mumbai, India). The return flight, half a year later, already was smoke-free. They could have told me before, but I could also have noticed: Why are there so many pharmacies at airports that sell nicotine patches? I'd wish that someone invents a nicotine tattoo that looks like Puff, the magic dragon.
Cigarette vending machines: They're on the decline, because many operators say, they're not worth the effort, and I can understand that. Sometimes on a Sunday I used to use the machine around my corner, but it would only take coins, so I had to plan ahead to have 7 euros in coins in my pocket, and not forget my bank card, drivers license, or personal ID for age checking. And, no, your health insurance card won't work. It could, the computer could do it, but they're blocked.
Rolling cigarettes: I do. That's from my Hippie times (YES, I am that old.) I'm rolling cigarettes for two reasons:
    - Nostalgia. Reminds me of the times when I had a motorbike, even when it was a Suzuki instead of a BMW.
    - Money. Rolling your own makes about half the amount of buying ready-made.
And my leather jeans and gear suggest to younger people that there most be a Kawasaki around the corner.
Taxes: I'm sorry, I couldn't completely follow you. That's a problem I think most Europeans have, because here, the price that's on the label is exactly the price you pay at checkout.
Preventable death: Here in Germany, obesity and diabetes due to consumption of too much sugar are the two main reasons for early death, just followed by smoking, or so people assume and is reported in the media. But I'm asking me why you should prevent death at any cost? What's an average 7 years loss on your lifespan compared to the fun and enjoyment you can get? In our later years, let's be honest, we'll be alzheimered and demented, and that's not life to me.

I despise smoking. It became even worse for me standing it after some time in Canada, where the laws are stricter and non-smoker protection is better. Same goes for alcohol consumption in public by the way. I do drink myself but wouldn't be mad if they banned it from the streets.
There's so much litter coming along with both practices.
I would like to see implemented some general rules for smoking like they've got in Canada. Certain distance to any entrance of public buildings. No smoking in general in public buildings / grounds. That would help a lot.
Being at a train station in Germany as a non smoker is a pain since there are areas where smoking is allowed every couple steps.

I am from California and have always enjoyed smoking restrictions that allowed me to have a normal life. Here I don’t have that luxury, therefore, my spouse and I keep it to ourselves. I stayed for love and my spouse understands my rare allergy to cigarette smoke. I am an academic who no longer enjoys staying in coffee shops to write. First of all, the coffee shops here are not really set up for that and staying outside I am exposed to the risk of someone smoking near by. I had one occasion where I was exposed directly and had CPR performed to make me start breathing again. I feel bad for all involved. Here in Canada we are not allowed to smoke in parks, restaurants, not allowed to smoke within so many meters of entrances etc. basically you can smoke in your home and car (without children in the car) anyways the amount of smoking in Germany was a culture shock. Yes unfortunately lots of smokers won‘t understand that non smokers around them don‘t like the smell of the smoke. And if you politely try to tell them that you don‘t like it and if it would be possible that they should go a bit away and smoke there, they get often angry. Their arguments are always the same. „It‘s my own right and decision, nobody shall judge me.“ „There are lots of smokers who reached the 100 without any disease. If I get a disease than it‘s my own thing - shit happens“ - You see the same symptoms like any other addiction. They whitewash it and don‘t want to hear that they are addicted and are too weak to stop their addiction. 🤷🏻‍♂️

That is the ONLY thing I disliked when in Germany and being among friends. The statistics might say that Germans smoke just a little bit less or a little bit more than Americans, but I just don't believe it. I was constantly surrounded by clouds of smoke. I think it is more than DOUBLE the amount who smokes. That is the only negative thing I can say about Germany. Interesting to see, that smoking is not such a thing in the USA. The advertisements (most prominently, the Marlboro man...) during my youth made me think otherwise. There were considerable campaigns in school on the topic, beginning in elementary, getting denser later on. Yet, at 17, between a third and half of my class were smoking - it was cool.
Some realised later, in their early twenties, that they had burned a sports car´s worth in cigarettes. Others stated later on, that they loathed it, but could not stop. I have known more than one person horribly dying from smoking, and I still fear that some of my friends may meet that fate someday.
There has been quite a debate on the 'horror images' on cigarette packs in Germany, although this had been a thing much earlies in a number of countries, and the impact on the youth, not to pick up that addiction, was already known. Arguments were, that it limited their personal freedom - which I always had thought was a typical American argument against any limitations. Even active smokers supported the horror images, as it would have kept them from starting as a kid, and it would hopefully keep a lot of kids away as well; but it would not make them reconsider smoking, as the addiction is stronger.
Another debate popped up, when smoking inside restaurants and bars was limited. Someone even said, that it somehow ruined the atmosphere of bars, as they smell of spilt beer, now. Some memories of the time before are that I had to go, because I couldn´t breathe in the some of the bars due to forced passive smoking, and my room would smell like old cigarettes, if I would not put every single piece of clothing on the balcony. I also remember, that I separated smoker`s and non-smoker´s areas were not a thing in my childhood.
Most of my friends were able to stop, fortunately, when they came to having children - or when the first cases of cancer and heart attacks came along in the vicinity.
Almost any smoker I know now picked it up in the youth and could not stop.Is this a similar thing (but 15% less) in the USA?
I am still puzzled, as in my perspective, gained while growing up, smoking was brought to Europe by the USA and their big tobacco corporates. I guess, we could learn from the USA, how to smoke less.

I hate those going crazy at the slightest smell of smoke or someone having the occasional cigarette, Society is getting less and less tolerant.

In German there is a distinction between letters. Only because it looks alike it is not necessarily. Rauchen = to smoke (oneself), (ein)räuchern = to cover s/t with smoke. Huge difference! The Räuchermännchen ist someone (Männchen = small man) who produces smoke resp. is someone who covers something in smoke. Which is usually the house.
I just re-read my diary from my first time to the USA in 1980. I put down my impressions and the differences I found. Just like you in your vids. I read that there were handouts of cigarette packages in Detroit on the street. In NY I still remember the cabs with the advertising on the them "Carlton is lowest". I had no idea what Carlton was. Only until later I learned it was about the cigarette brand smoke ingredients. I am not a smoker, never been.
I used the Greyhound bus to get around. It was only allowed to smoke in the last 6(?) rows of the bus. When we crossed the border into California the driver announced that there it were illegal to smoke on public transport. SO anyone who would do it he would throw off the bus. And it would be up to the next driver whether he/she could continue the ride on the next bus. Germany is a little behind. It took an awfully long time to restrict smoking in bars and restaurants.

I remember taking a photo of all the cigarette butts on a no smoking S-Bahn platform. So, in addition to neglecting the no smoking signage, littering seemed to be okay when it came to cigarettes. Now, don't get me wrong, Americans will throw their butts everywhere as well. It was just surprising to me to see that in a country where rules seem to followed for literally everything else.

Smoking in the US is the DIRECT cause of around 400,000 deaths each year, and not just from “lung cancer”. It is also associated with increased rates of bladder and colon cancer, and is a major contributor to stroke and heart attacks.
Notice I have not even mentioned smoking’s role in lung diseases such as chronic bronchitis and emphysema which cause a great deal of disability and deaths.
Finally, one has to realize that habitual smokers smoke for one reason: because they are truly addicted to the nicotine. In other words, smoking is, in itself , not enjoyable at all. It just calms the addicts urge for a few minutes.
Fortunately, as you so aptly pointed out, smoking is no longer fashionable in the US. Those who do smoke go to great lengths to conceal their addiction. People are quitting in the thousands every day not only for their health, but for social reasons as well. It has also become extremely expensive, which helps to discourage smoking and to help pay for healthcare for smoker’s illnesses.

Hat in meiner Kindheit (geboren 1961) noch so ziemlich jeder erwachsene Mann geraucht - und auch viele junge Frauen - so ist das heute nicht mehr der Fall. Can we talk about Americans and all kind of pills? I do not think that Americans have less addictions than Germans do - even if there is more smokers here than in the USA. Might be a topic for one of your next videos, too. Pills and especially the use of dietary supplements in both countries.
When I was in the USA the first time - in 1992 - there was more smoking over there than here in Germany. Ok, I was in tabacco land NC. There were people even smoking in supermarkets - and DIY-markets. Smoking was still possible in planes. And there was a big marketing connected with it - you e.g. got Camel Joe T-Shirts when you bought a ten-pack of cigarettes. Cigarettes were a lot cheaper in the USA than in Germany.

Interesting fact: post war when US GI‘s brought with them lots of cigarettes, smoking became „cool“ in the 1950‘s and 1960‘s. My personal impression is, that up to the late 1970‘s to early 1980‘s smoking was on the rise, much more accepted and done. From the late 1980‘s generally smoking was on decline. Trivia: there are much more women / girls smoking today than men / boys. In my company at least 2/3 of the smokers are women. Regarding vending machines: you should have seen the amount of them in the 1970‘s. BTW I smoked from age of 14 (secretly) up to 32. The next 32 years I did not smoke a single cigarette. On the other hand I notice that non-smokers can get quite violent when the topic gets to smoking. Why? If someone wants to smoke, it is his f...ing own business. As long as he does not force others to smoke too. But why do non-smokers believe they can enforce others to stop / quit smoking? You are not superior, you don‘t own the world. Just relax, stay calm. Others have a right to live as they want to. Smokers aren‘t as militant as non-smokers. No one forces someone to smoke, usually a smoker does not mind if you don’t smoke. Keep cool and let everybody choose their kind of living. And yes, even if it includes smoking. .

Same applies to a lot of other areas of live. Problem is that most of the times people do have these opinions (live and let live) when there are downsides for the opposite side.
Think smoking, eating meat, being noisy in any way, drink alcohol...
Of course you can do all that. Freedom of choice. But with that freedom comes other people's opinion on it. Especially when it's an annoyance.

@@HD-ty8ng Well, of course it can be as you point out. But it has not to be so. If everybody would have reasonable respect for others and behave accordingly most problems would not occur. To smoke in the vicinity of non-smokers would be kind of rude. But if someone smokes in company with other smokers - so what? Problems start when a non-smoker walks to a smoker and demands him to stop. Why not just leave him alone? Sometimes I get the impression that violent non/smokers are on a kind of crusade, have a religious kind of attitude to missionise. Same with some Vegans. They somehow seem to feel superior.

    • @HD-ty8ng
      @HD-ty8ng 3 роки тому +2

@@darkredvan sure. When someone walks up to someone else and just demands them to stop, of course that's nonsense. I just meant that in case smokers and non-smokers are mingling, than I get that non-smokers might speak up since they feel not respected or overlooked. That's all.

Wow, learned something again. Didn't know that the Nazis had an Anti-Smoking-Campaign. Yes, Germans smoke way too much, especially younger people. The airport rules in the U.S. make sense, wish they were the same here. Smoking is unhealthy. And all the cigarette butts on the ground are simply disgusting. There's much to be done here. Period. And with Aldi? Nailed it again, folks. Love your blog.

From what I understand, the Nazis embraced meth big time. It wasn't called that back then but the slang word was supposedly "ice" and it helped the soldiers stay awake for days. I don't know if it's true but thought I would mention it here to see whether it is true or not.

It was called Pervitin (and the soldiers called it "Panzer-Schokolade" [tank(er's) chocolate] oder "Stuka-Pillen"). Pervitin could be legally bought even in the 1950s, although already in 1940 quite heavy unwanted side effects became obvious.

Germany does not have branded cigaretts anymore? Switzerland has brand cigaretts but they have grafic pictures on them aswell. Plus teenagers can buy cigaretts at the age of 16.

Yes but the brand name is only as a small text on the package right? 7:55 The pictures they show in the video also have a "brand" text on the lower half of the package

There's still brand names placed rather prominently on German packages. I guess just the same as in Switzerland or Czech Republic. The boxes shown in the video are not german packages but rather general design specimens from a random image database or maybe from a completely different country like France, idk.
German packages look like this: zedaco.de/media/image/95/a8/cf/reemtsma-header-2_1280x1280.jpg

I really missed a tax comparison. In the US the tax is 29%. How high is it in Germany? Bet you a nickel it's higher.

    • @PassportTwo
      @PassportTwo  3 роки тому

I think you are talking about income tax? If so, it does seem that taxes are higher in Germany, but there are way too many variables to say that generally and to say US tax is 29%. For example, in Texas, you don't have any state income tax but you do pay federal income tax but in most other states you pay state AND federal income tax. Taxes in California and taxes in Arkansas are also COMPLETELY, almost to the point of uncomparably, different. Whether you are married, have kids, how much you make, etc. ALL impacts what percentage of taxes one pays on income. This is the same case in Germany and in Germany, you even have other taxes like whether or not you go to church that impacts how much one pays in taxes. So, sure, I would say that taxes are higher in Germany generally speaking, but there are so many individual exceptions it is hard to make a general statement like that. 😊
