      I always remember one of his statement when you analyse sentences in terms of syntactic, semantics,lexical,stylistically and phonological he gave the following example:
      (Colorless Green Idea Sleeps Furiously)
      Phonetically are English phonetics
      Syntactically subject is colorless Green idea and verb is sleeps lastly Furiously is complement.
      Stylistically also are English style
      But Semantically there is no meaning because how colorless can be Green idea then the idea sleep while is furioisly

    a great man, glad to see he's still doing well. Attended his lecture in Heidelberg at DAI, Dec 2016! In the 70s he was for me a synonym of GG: generative grammar! I attended a course in Lx with Dr Saib (Chomsky supervised his PhD thesis) at the University Med V, Rabat. In the 80s as I shifted my focus to postcolonial studies, I discovered his political writing and support to the Palestinian cause together with his good friend the late E. Said.
    God bless you all

    How amazing! Chomsky's valuable contributions still haven't answered the question how and why nature designed our minds to work the way they do. He once said this could remain forever an unsolvable mystery.

    To discover the simple principles underlying the human complex linguistic behaviour could be a challenge beyond all human intelligence combined. This is a hell of a mission, which may remain miles away from our cognitive ability to achieve. Chomsky is only trying to pave the way for humanity to get ready for the journey into the unknown. (once studied linguistics at Fes at the hands of the great Fatima Saddiqi)

    If we had a contact with an alien civilisation, Chomsky would be probably the person we can put forward to represent us.

    • @lastprince9199
      @lastprince9199 3 роки тому +1

      The problem is if the aliens have some thing like the language system at all.

    • @halnineooo136
      @halnineooo136 3 роки тому +1

      @@lastprince9199
      Processing information is fundamental to life. Even the simplest form of living beings process and share information.
      Unless those aliens are actually a single entity, they'll have to share information somehow. The bandwidth of the communication channel determines the complexity of the language among other factors.
      So if they're smart and have individuality there's very probably gonna be language.

    • @lastprince9199
      @lastprince9199 3 роки тому

      @@halnineooo136 I see your point but it all depends on the nature of the system of communication adopted by aliens and how easy it is to decode. My belief is the only aliens are humans, they look extremely frightening as almost every feature in them is repeated twice, which , in my view, a duality inspires the mind mechanism.

    Excuse me, but this 'simple idea' is found in 2011: universal soundhelix (klankhelix, Lauthelix) and Chomsky knows this (25:00) ! A Jörg Rüpke, a Benjamin List, a Klaus Hasselmann, a Hedde Zeijlstra, they all know, but they do not tell how they got this knowledge since they feel ashame not to have discover this by themselves.

    He was just as eloquent and confident during the 1980s when postulating the "government and binding" theory of language, only to have it completely abandoned 10-some years later. While one should appreciate many ideas he advanced, it would be foolish to believe that he's finally got things figured out this time as he is eloquently and confidently stating here.

      @@lewiscoacher7781 If you read my initial remark carefully, you'd see that it wasn't really about Chomsky -- after all, an individual has the freedom to say what s/he believes to be true at any given moment. And it's typical of humans to do so with confidence. What is unfortunate is that too many scholars, who pride themselves as independent-thinkers, just piously followed him at every turn and ended up wasting years of time and other resources for the subjective errors that one single person makes. The pattern has been repeating for decades, and says something pessimistic about human vulnerability.

    Mr. Chomsky, without speaking a so-called pre-Indo-European language (whose speakers were largely conqured or assimilated), there will never be good assessments about language. Just as a young eagle reared by chicken will never learn how to fly.

    • @gg3675
      @gg3675 3 роки тому +2

      Your comment is confusing, but your implication that speakers of languages outside of the indo-european family are rare is frankly just completely wrong. Mandarin (sino-tibetan family), Arabic (afro-asiatic family), and Indonesian (austronesian family) are some of the most commonly spoken languages on Earth. wtf?

    • @kilmerborges
      @kilmerborges 3 роки тому

      What are you talking about? There are tons of language families around the world which have no connection whatsoever to Indo-European languages. Even in Europe with Basque and the Uralic languages, at least Basque definitely being a pre-Indo-European language that survived through the centuries.
