The corral is the "escape room" puzzle that adds a fun dynamic to that last section 😆. Stoked it all worked out. Just to reiterate to everyone: there is an easier way!
While Zoleo is not well known, it's definitely not off brand. There are many reasons to choose it over a Garmin. I've been using mine for a couple of years now. It has everything I need and nothing I don't. The weather forecasts are clutch. The texting and interface is oh so useful and straightforward. Full month on the Colorado River, trip to Alaska, numerous river trips, and the CDT (different family members). Such a great product!!!
You two helped inspire me to ride more this year and complete a 102 mile mixed terrain ride last month. It started at 23⁰F, included a 90 mile calorie decficit (lack of planning) and a friend's broken arm (he rode 10 miles on it). Epic adventure! I will do it again...maybe with better planning😂. Cheers on an amazing, adventure filled year!
That was awesome scenery and cool trails. At the end of the day, no matter how good or bad, the important thing is you did it together. Nice job you two. Much respect. 👍💪👊
What a lovely ride, I’m jealous. I used to ride a lot but then started with really bad anxiety and I’m a male, and now don’t do any. The fear consumes me. So thankyou for the video it brought back a lot of great memories. 👍
Hy. I know how you feel. Every couple of years I get severe anxiety and the only thing I can do is shut myself up at home and go to bed. Luckily, now I'm in a phase where I'm ok, so I can do everything. I often push my limits, I go by bike to places where I'm scared and alone, but I push myself and try. I know it's not easy when you're very unwell, but the time will come when you'll be ok again and ride a bike. just be strong and positive
Another great challenge met! Thanks!!!! for sharing. I will take the pro lessons from this for my own big ride (which is much, much smaller than yours): 1: Overprepare, and then prepare some more. 2: Have a really snuggly onesie ready and waiting at the destination.
Personally, I am a big fan of o'dark starts for big days in the mountains. 1: It's as cold as it's likely to get so you have enough warm gear if things go south. 2: Tired and Dark is not fun and much more likely to lead to bad decisions/mental/physical stumbles. I think it's pretty easy to under prepare for bad stuff on a bike. If something happens to the bike you are walking and 10 miles from the road turns from at most 2 hrs to much longer. This is something I struggle with a lot, speed vs having stuff to survive when the speed disappears.I would really like to see a "full load" video for what you carry for these long days. It's always interesting to see how other people make these trade-offs. I am a big believer in the "speed is biggest safety" in the mountains, but I am always second guessing myself...
When I lived in Alaska, we often had the same dilemma but magnified by the fact that sometimes we were much farther from roads and civilization. We still rode pretty light much of the time; but it did worry me if we had a true emergency. Someone would have had to ride to get help (no cell phones back then and even then, some of the places we went probably still don’t have coverage). Look up the Hell Rides done by Roman Dial and some of his friends in remote areas of Alaska. He wrote articles back in the 90s in Outside Magazine detailing some of these rides where they went really light (no sleeping bags or tents and only a small inflatable raft to cross rivers, etc.). Those were some truly epic adventures they did. They went to places like the Brooks Range in northern Alaska and in remote parts of the Kenai Peninsula. I thought they were nuts! Alaska was a great place for mountain biking adventures.
Wow what a ride. For the most part looked pretty good definitely felt bad for you guys nearing the last 2 or 3 hours. Out of food ,dark, and hard to find the trail. That’s a trifecta of suck. Glad you made it back and the onesie were definitely a great idea for the end of the day. Always love your videos and think about how strong y’all are when I’m struggling on a ride. Thank you for that. Stay safe out there. Can’t wait to see where you’ll end up next!!
Have y’all looked into the Epic Skyway race in central Alabama in the Talledaga National Forest. It is a 100 mile down and back race with a mixture of single track, fire roads and washed jeep roads.
I bought a set of Shokz over a year ago through one of your links. I always have them close by. I prefer earbuds at work for the hearing protection, but the Shokz live in my lunch cooler. I even got my boss onto Shokz. He wears them all day, being in amongst us but still needing to be connected to our international customers. It's hard to describe why you need them because there's so many use cases. As Macky said, they are a game changer. Edit: I got the normal/large size, which is unnecessarily large for my lean adult built, they stick out far enough I have to tuck them up into my hat. It looks like Macky uses the smaller version, which I wish I had.
Used zoleo over the middle of the Atlantic from an aircraft for many years. Works very well and has been reliable for me. Use it in my hiking gear as well.
What an amazing journey. My husband and I have done some short Bikepacking rides on our gravel bikes but nothing this ambitious. While I know we could do a big single-track adventure over a few days we have a 2-year-old who we want to bring with us.
Ok how did I miss your first attempt last year?? (Going back to watch first.) That moment at 40:28 when Syd said "that's stunning" and Macky answered "you're stunning" - I do that to my wife all the time, whether it's something nice or not, can get pretty funny sometimes.
if you’re looking for a shorter (time) ride… try the white rim in moab. it’s more of a gravel ride, but it usually has some sandy sections that keeps everyone honest. i’ve done it on my ss, and geared bikes… only took me 12 hrs 😂… FKT is about 5.5hours.
The more and more I see how beautiful the trails are in NM, the more I think I need to move there. But then again, I do not like cold weather or snow:) Side note- About to order my first ever carbon wheels. Decided to go with with the Nobl T35s on hydra hubs. Can't your code since I am using the black Friday code but I did tell them to thank Syd and Macky 🤙
Thanks for another fun video! About your Whoops.... I've had mine for a year now and really don't use it as well as I could. Guess I haven't researched it enough to get full value. Would you give thought to a video on how you use your Whoops for training? TIA Cheers!
I've been waiting for this!!! Saturday morning viewing! ❤ Edit- soo good! Ive had plenty of offroad adventures where me n my wife got lost. Lets just say , im imoressed with how you both are still talking to each other! 😂
That was an epic ride. Maybe a start at the first camp site would have been a perfect day or finish at the 3rd. Either way that was an awesome experience.
Maybe 1 day I will come from Europe and do this with or without you. IMHO is better to do this in late May-June when you have so much more daylight. This route is what I love the most. We have planty such also here in Slovakia :) But as BKXC say, do me a favor, go ride something new!
Was Macky on the trail bike? Wondering what led to the difference in tire selection. Considering all the stuff you've done with the Aspens, a bit surprised you'd run the DHR here.
They're the Primal Vertos THS jackets. Really comfy and warm but also surprisingly breathable: www.primalwear.com/collections/all-outerwear-cycling-apparel/products/alitios-mens-mustard-race-cut-vertos-ths-jacket
I love my zoleo. I do cary a lightwieght spare battery for my phone if my ride is more then 4 hours. Remember, if you don't have cell signal it eats through phone batteries a lot quicker.
that seems like it would be better but there's a pretty small window between snow melting out in may/june and monsoon season, which usually means pretty serious thunderstorms every afternoon at these elevations, so you gotta pick your poison!
Don't think we haven't noticed your coffee game has gone down. What happened to your Rancilio, then the Moka pot is gone, for drip! Bread and ride looks good at least, I guess... 😂 all in jest, jealously here in southern Ontario
Oh, don't worry, Syd still uses the mocha pot most of the time, it's just for early mornings like this that she uses the coffee machine because it's faster and can be turned on and ignored while we put things in the car 😜
We have one and were thinking about using it for this ride but then we figured out the option with Loren and Shuttle Taos. Also it probably would have worked for this ride with Hopewell lake and the Vallecitos river crossing but in general New Mexico isn't know for plentiful water sources 😁
What are the knee sleeves that Syd is wearing? Seem really long which would be great for me. Also so jealous of the rides you mountain dwellers get to have in your a yard. Love to see it.
Thank you for the anxiety at the very end of the video. I was worried you guys weren’t gonna make it spend the night in the wilderness. By chance did you guys carry a space blanket?
wau, nice, good job guys! very cool. what bikes did you do this on? I am guessing not your lightest xc bikes, based on Macky saying he was on DHR2... do you think you would be more efficient on lighter bikes? also, what is the best time for those Aspen colours in Colorado? I am from Europe, just in case I come one day to experience that beauty...
Syd was on her XC bike, I was on my Enduro bike (we do that so we can both be on our endurance power zones when riding together). Late September or early October is probably your best bet for fall colors. We did this ride in early October.
I bought Shokz last year when you recommended them. I have never been able to get more than about 2-2 1/2 hours out of them. Did I get a lemon pair? I was not going to buy more for this reason.

There is probably a reasons none of my fellow bikepackers day job is Rocket Scientist. PS for me the big advantage of the inreach is that you buy service month by month. So cheapskates like only need to pay for one or two month & not a full years worth.
That's true for this as well except instead of not paying for certain months you pay $4 instead of the usual $20 and you get to keep your communicator's "phone number"
He actually wanted to come, but asked if we could delay a few days which is EXACTLY what happened last year which caused us to miss the nice weather. We told him we'd learned our lesson last year 🤣
4 days makes it about 23-24 miles of fairly difficult terrain a day, which is doable for most riders, plus it allows you to camp in actual campsites every night and have a supported bike packing trip, which is why a lot of people do it that way. If you do it in 2 days, it's two pretty big days, and there's no good way to split in into 3 and have support, since you'd be camping places with no road access.
Also the longest day of the year tends to be right on the middle of our race season when big adventure rides like this don't make sense from a training perspective. That's why we end up saving them for the Fall.
Nope. He tried to get us to delay a couple days so he could join, buy that's what happened last time and then there was a blizzard so we learned our lesson 😁
The corral is the "escape room" puzzle that adds a fun dynamic to that last section 😆. Stoked it all worked out. Just to reiterate to everyone: there is an easier way!
Ha! Does a two day trip make sense?
@kellyperkins4139 Depends on the riders of course. It would be 2 pretty big days, which may be just perfect for the right group.
Thank you for filming this for us to enjoy. This season has been the best.

All the makings of an epic ride......................Congrats
Used zoleo over the middle of the Atlantic from an aircraft for many years. Works very well and has been reliable for me. Use it in my hiking gear as well.
Incredible, dude! Just watched the full run the other day. Inspired.
Hah, auto play changed videos while I was writing this comment. This was supposed to be for Megavalanche.
Such awesome scenery! Beautiful!

Thank you for the anxiety at the very end of the video. I was worried you guys weren’t gonna make it spend the night in the wilderness. By chance did you guys carry a space blanket?

Exactly. Makes it so that we can both be doing similar relative intensities.

Early October
I bought Shokz last year when you recommended them. I have never been able to get more than about 2-2 1/2 hours out of them. Did I get a lemon pair? I was not going to buy more for this reason.
That definitely sounds like a lemon. I'd get in touch with them to get them replaced.
@ thank you. The entire duration I have had them, I wondered how you guys used them for any long rides. Incredible year you both had. Congratulations!

He actually wanted to come, but asked if we could delay a few days which is EXACTLY what happened last year which caused us to miss the nice weather. We told him we'd learned our lesson last year 🤣
It takes people 4 days to ride that trail? Interesting!

If you do it in 2 days, it's two pretty big days, and there's no good way to split in into 3 and have support, since you'd be camping places with no road access.
Why you not doing a ride like this on the longest daylight day of the year that way would be warmer lighter and safer.
Where is the fun in that?
Also the longest day of the year tends to be right on the middle of our race season when big adventure rides like this don't make sense from a training perspective. That's why we end up saving them for the Fall.
