As a kid, I loved movie scores. It was the Magnificent Seven that first caught my attention. For years, I wanted to write movie scores. However, it turned out I was a better arranger than a composer, so I never got to do my dream. Nevertheless, I believe Elmer Bernstein was the greatest, followed by Jerry Goldsmith. RIP guys.

Great, thanks. Bernstein (I think) spent the later part of the 80's in Europe, because of comedy score typecasting ('Airplane', 'Animal House', 'Ghostbusters', etc.) I believe that's how he was available to score Jim Sheridan's 'My Left Foot' and 'The Field'. Could have misinterpreted what happened. Really top class and consistent composer, who should have won his Oscar for something other than 'Thoroughly Modern Millie'.
