I have enjoyed Closure To Truth for some years now. I am 93 years old (Shortly be 94) retired as physician 17 years ago after practicing medicine for 46 years . As we age we have problems with Memory and Mobility. Every year I update Health Initiative Document to my children and grand children stressing how to tackle these problems. I have always maintained that Learning is the very Essence of life. I have 6 children, 10 grandchildren and expecting 6th great grandchild. Its fun playing Wordle with children and grandchildren every morning. My interests are Oil painting, music, sciences, astronomy and nothing better that UA-cam to learn these every morning! I try to learn different disciplines!
I'm an immunologist and I try to switch to neuroscience, because this is the closest I can get to doing reseach on consciousness. Thanks for the interview, it really helped me a lot. I'll get the book for my 32th birthday🎉
No matter how rigorously scientific any investigation into the nature of the substrate of a sentence might be (whether the substrate be ink on paper or light from pixels) the meaning of a sentence will not be found in that direction. Now, since a 'written' sentence is simply a frozen thought there's bound to be an extremely significant connection between the meaning of a sentence and the meaning of the neural behavior that was responsible for its writing. Sentences are thoughts alphabetically encoded. Easy to imagine then that thoughts may be encoded by neural discharge frequency. That 'frequency' and 'code' are abstract notions might be a clue that leads to an understanding of just why thoughts and minds have their odd immaterial flavour.
First, Robert, those two instances of inexplicable lucidity in verbal expression in the case of your late mother (who suffered from dementia late in her life) are amazing phenomenon! Really amazing! I’m convinced these extraordinary instances of peculiarities of consciousness speak volumes of its true nature. (I’m still 100% dualist and on top of that believe there may be some fundamental truth to my idea of *information++* that is based in mathematical logic). TBD. Second, the fact that we, as a species, are still here and have achieved this much as a civilization (building cities and organizing transportation; learning how to speak - properly, and writing the fiction & nonfiction, poetry, scientific papers, differential equations and dictionaries with 300,000 sharp definitions of words and notions and concepts; understanding the anatomy and diseases; creating & discussing arts, philosophy, diplomacy and ethics; all the while being resilient to pests, plagues, wars, famine and viruses - those on the brink of animate-inanimate matter, of digital nature and those of faux, deadly ideas; succeeding as teams of experts - scientists, technicians and engineers - to safely send selected few - astronauts - off this earthly cradle of divine, capturing, bounding gravitation - to the Moon and beyond; composing & conducting symphonies and enjoying dancing to the familiar, popular tunes; playing sports but while respecting rules; so civilized, on occasions). Truly amazing (if you put on a pink binoculars). Although, I think we should be concerned, too, because the progress, especially in cultural emancipation, is not a monotonic function… But, let’s worry tomorrow… Third, I think music may also prove to be the key to unlocking or initiating the natural cognitive potential & development in H. sapiens. It’s crazy that consciousness is so mysterious to neuroscientists when they can read the comment section on this video and see a hundred people who’s re absolutely certain of what causes it
TL;DR -> Sarah Manning-Peskin's book, A Molecule Away from Madness, explores the idea of brains being taken over by single molecules and the patient experiences and scientific discoveries that accompany such diseases. She discusses how these rare conditions can provide a groundwork for curing more common diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. Her book also gives recognition to the unrecognized scientists who made discoveries in order to solve medical mysteries. It also looks at the physical properties of consciousness, and how science may never be able to understand the essence of consciousness.
She's completely off the radar. From someone who has had personal experience of Non-Local Consciousness, I can tell you now that the brain does not construct consciousness. It mainly harbours it, and coincides with it, but does not generate it. My consciousness, through out of body states, has expanded and extended beyond my physical brain. Only those who have had a similar experience can understand.
With respect no mention of the approximately 5lbs of bacteria in your gut with proven continued communication with the brain, releasing hormones vitamins etc. Correcting your microbiome should be a serious option ✨
Heard this interview and got the book immediately. Started reading the introduction and holy cow I can't understand what she is saying. She says that neurons don't appear i the human body below the eyes or at least seems to assume this. The then goes on to equate human life and couscous activity to that of inert machines. This can only lead to mind body even brain body duality with which I do not find a compelling argument. In human embryo development neurons are formed early on and through the development process all over the body and form the foundation on which the brain stands, they are inseparable. Would love to have a discussion on these issues, I can stand to learn more. I'll of course finish reading the book and make an effort to grasp her understanding.
Life is a box full of unexpected surprises good and not so good. I trained my small mind to blame Satan for everything that is bad and give God the credit for everything that is good.
It appears we're on a countdown to a future where we might be able to replicate our brains. It could happen in a couple of decades or a few centuries, but the rapid advancements in quantum computing and artificial intelligence make this a plausible prediction. The moment we can transfer our consciousness into a durable, artificial body and brain, we've essentially achieved immortality. Regrettably, the reality for most of us currently is far from this potential, constrained by the limitations of our natural biology. However, the inevitability of immortality looms, unless we find a way to self-destruct before reaching this milestone. With the prevailing mindset of the masses today, self-destruction isn't entirely off the table. There's a risk that we could annihilate ourselves before realizing our full potential for eternal life, which would be an irreversible loss of an extraordinary opportunity.

Robert is one of the most accomplished interviewers who nearly always asks the right questions..
He would truly excel at asking these deep and profound questions out of advanced AI models like GPT-4 and beyond.

Close to consciousness but not close enough. Try philosophy of consciousness.
@@njeyasreedharanYes, you may be right. I may not become a professional philosopher, but I know I must not neglegt philosophy.

Lovely interview. Respectful, honest, compelling topic leading to a genuine desire to inform. Very much appreciated. Thank you.

This was an excellent interview. Seems like the field is bounding forward. Thank you.
Very neat interview right here! :) Thank you very much to both of you and any other people involved, for the upload! :)
Wonderful presentation.

what does it mean to be a dualist? First time I ever heard of that term. Is that like a materialist?
