Might be a good test to make a proper cinematic sequence with this + one using your camera and a prime lens and then let a group of non-filmmaker people look at it and see if they can notice the difference at first glance (without telling them beforehand what the comparison will be about). Would be a cool video
You would be able to tell right away. The cutout around hair and ears makes it so obvious. Also , there's a haloing effect around people. Last but not least it only shoots up to 1080p
@@skinaddiction4852 I mean I definitely notice, but I work in the field, so I'm just curious how people outside of video production would fare, if they're not hobbyists or something already to some degree
If we look back we can see that portrait mode at first wasn´t that great and now we´re at the stage when you sometimes can´t even see a difference to a dslr. Imagine cinematic mode in like 3 or 4 years. I can´t wait!
The computational blur is still pretty obvious and not as high quality as a regular interchangeable lens blur. The artificial blur just looks fuzzy while real low depth of field is smooth and more natural. This is good for the average consumer who wants better video quality but for higher end work it's a little too noticeable.
The thought of no longer having to carry around a heavy, expensive DSLR with many interchangeable lenses and a gimbal and instead just carrying this in my pocket and getting 90% of the results for 10% of the effort makes me pretty happy.
I use my iphone for all of my youtube videos currently and honestly love what cinematic brings to this process for people. These types of enhancements really help people build an entire multi-platform brand with 1 device
Thanks for highlighting that cinematic mode isn't available on the ultra wide. No other review thought to mention this. No cinematic mode on the ultra wide is a huge bummer and possibly a deal breaker for me.
Dudee😂😂😂i see all your team videos on same topic like petermckinnon and other people but i swear u guys are in my top list of world best filmakers❤️❤️❤️😍
The phone is impressive but i don't think it will ever replace my sony fx6. I think that is a great starter camera for someone that wants to get their toes wet and see if thats something they enjoy doing. Just my thoughts.
The stabilization was amazing while you were walking - the whole iPhone sequence looked shot on a large traditional camera. Love how the Canadian flags pop even with the cloudy sky 💪🏼
Me and my son Vlog with my phone at amusement parks for one of our channels, it’s not easy to lug our rig around while trying to get on and off of coasters so quickly. This might be exactly what we needed.
I’m really impressed with that stabilization! I had planned on using my phone with a DJI OM5, but that almost seems like overkill now after seeing this footage.
Nobody is talking about, the cinematic mode is 1080P only. Also if you choose pro res video (when its available) you can do both, it’s one or the other.. glad you mentioned the downsides.
For first gen, it's decent. Not going to perfect because of the edge detections/errors for more complex scenes, but I'm pretty sure it will be much more improved in future generations of iPhones and hopefully with 4K 30 or 4K 60.
I feel like the fact that it can’t do 1080 24 when it can do 1080 30 is really annoying so hopefully apple will add a software update that allows you to change framerate. Also I feel like apple only capped it at 1080p so people will have a reason to upgrade next year but it could be a hardware limitation tho I find that unlikely
08:40 "I'm worried" -> I was too when I saw how poor the fake depth of field looked, the picture all smudged and fidgety. But then big surprise - you thought that was awesome ??
the main issue is that there's only one degree of out-of-focus. the amount of blur doesn’t change depending on how far away something in the background is, which is to be expected, since the lidar-sensor can’t reach very far and currently, no chip would be capable to calculate that amount of data in realtime anyway. but.. 10 years from now on, i can imagine this to get very, very usable.
Phones especially iPhones aren't that much different year to year no matter what bells and whistles are playing. Now when a phone (it won't be Apple I'm sure) comes out with a bigger than 1 inch sensor I am sold and will watch videos like this Fanboy stuff
It's very cool. I don't know if I would consider $1000-$1400 an "accessible" film-making tool. I would still encourage new creators on a budget to explore a used DSLR as a good, reliable option.
Exactly if we can get the phone stabilization inside the cameras it would be a game changer and the a7s 3 is on the right track with that software there using forgot the name but can make the footage even more smoother once you throw thru there program
Definitely seeing halo around the head ! Also what about the blur if there is lights behind ? I am getting the 13 pro Friday normally… i look forward for some test too but I don’t think it will replace my sony for proper video. But I am so pumped for my every day poket camera 😍
This is the first phone that has the potential to have movies made by it. It's crazy to think that not even a few years ago, the cameras on a smartphone were being mocked for how inferior they were and now Cinematic Mode gives us all a chance to make incredible videos.
Hey Matti, great video, could you please review the 13 mini first? I am very pumped for this year model, and I would love to see a deep review as far as battery for that particular model. Thanks a lot
great video. cinematic mode is cool, albeit perhaps (if I may) still in its infancy (e.g. clearly visible artifacts on 9:12 in btw face and hands). really really looking forward to iPhone 14 and how cinematic mode will be even further improved (perhaps also with support for 4K) :-)
Looks like Vaseline all around people's heads. It will get better no doubt, but ehhhhh. With that said, my pre-order should be here in the next 5 days and I can't wait! :)
I believe your conclusion is correct. This is a proof of concept, it is going to improve every year. Sometime in the future computational will kill mirrorless cameras like it did point and shoots. Maybe 5 years or maybe 10, but it is coming. Obviously this looks fake, but if they can incorporate Lidar to clean up the edge, have the processing power to do 4k, and continue to improve lenses and sensors. Just look at the processors in these phones, they are as powerful as a laptop, their processing power has caught up, their screens caught up, the only thing left is the cameras and they are dumping millions each year in R&D. The cameras sell phones, so it will be the primary focus moving forward to push for upgrades.
That shot was insane for a phone!! I have a mirrorless camera but having the ability to change depth of field and focus after it’s shot is amazing!! I don’t think cameras will become obsolete but their sales might take a little hit 😬
I can't believe camera makers aren't diving into computational photography, I wonder what amazing features could be developed on a dslr with real lenses, bigger body for more processing power ...
@@maccsamillion3158 They should've been thinking about it for years! Just short sighted in my mind. Though I'm sure the whole computational photography thing is not easy to develop.
But can you flip from front to back cameras while filming, It's what I hate about the 12mini and what the Samsung's 'Director Mode' has as standard now. That would be very helpful - I saw you filming Tyler and Teppo then yourself, so hopefully this was that flip in action. So would you pick the iPhone 13 over a Sony SV-E10 as the upgrade for vlogging/film making in 2021?
Not an iPhone comment but dude… your skin tones always look SO good when you film in your office! How do you get them to look so good? You still using Adobe Premier for your NLE or is this with Final Cut? So crisp… i
I don’t like cinematic mode. Well, I do but I don’t, if you could manually set white balance then I would absolutely love it but I hate auto white balance. I can’t use cinematic mode for consistency
Think IPhone 13 pro might be worth the upgrade for cinematic mode & the cameras also what city are you filming in its beautiful looking city I’m not upgrading cinematic mode looks impressive but 1080 p no 24 fps is letdown for me but maybe next year
Can you tell I'm hyped on cinematic mode??? 😂What are your first thoughts?
We're those shots from the mini or were you switching between the other phones?:)
Matti, Surely Cinematic Mode should really be 24fps, I'm glad you touched on it, us as film makers need to push for 24fps
Matti vs Pete iphone cinematic mode challenge🔥🔥🎥🎬🔥🔥
Not that I'm not impressed with the technology but Cinematic Mode being limited to1080p at 30 fps is disappointing. Otherwise it looks nearly perfect.
I've noticed a few times now that it still has the same problem as the photo apps, it doesn't understand how to focus glasses

Probably the doubt about whether phones will replace DSLRs is legit as it used to be when DSLRs were jeopardising the survival of SLRs.
