- I decided to go with a taller gearing on the BMW by dropping 3 teeth off the rear sprocket. I also went with a 520 chain and sprocket instead of the 525 stock, so that should give me a slight performance advantage. First impressions are good with the new gearing, definitely a lot calmer on the highway (dropped around 500 rpm at 80 mph).

Cheers for the vid amigo, I love the bit where your camera is on the pillion peg with the how to instructions for the breaker ;-) felt like my shed... always new things to learn!
Hey! I followed your instructions. All came out perfectly! I like the taller gearing much better...the bike feels far less busy at speed. Muchas Gracias!
Nice!
Hi Cuban Rider
Thanks for the advice and replying so quickly. Much appreciated
Anand
Thanks for the video, you've inspired me to do my own. I was looking at the chain breakers and was trying to decide between the DID and Motion Pro. Is there a reason you chose the Motion Pro? Thanks
Thanks for posting!
Can't wait to see your new 1/4 mile time.
I know, I'm excited about doing some passes. Initial testing proved to be harder to wheelie in 1st, so I should be able to launch harder.
Thanks for the video Man .. can you tell me the factory size of the sprockets of the BMW S1000R (SINGLE R) 2017 ?? I was searching all the net but I couldn't find . thanks .. and what do you think if go with 1 or 2 teeth less than the factory size? does this effect speed? and does this spoil the bike in long term?
Hi @CubanRider, did you have to change chain size aswell with the smaller sprocket or can you still use the 525?
P.S. Love you track vids 😎👌
Thank you dude I can't wait to get my XR please keep your videos fresh
Ride safe !
Man, you really love your XR, and you answer every single question, that is pretty cool !
Instead of changing the rear sprocket I am thinking about a 18T front, do you know where to find one?
Alex from Miami Beach, let's share a beer one of these days !
Thanks Alex, I'll have to hit you up when I go down to Miami. Unfortunately the biggest you can go up front is 17 teeth, there is no room to put a bigger sprocket.
I just got a custom cut 43t rear for my S1000 R
gonna put it on in the next few days, snowing still so i'm a while out from riding but I can't wait to see the difference. idk about the XR but the R has a 45t rear, and the front sprocket clearance, well there is none. I just wanted better highway cruising speed & the ceiling raised past 170
i've always loved your vids man you rip this thing like crazy!
& maybe this will help but keep some shit aluminum foil with your oil kit and when you drain, throw it over the headers to keep em clean!
Thanks man, the XR has the exact same ratio, 17/45. I went with a 42 rear and loved it, but it hurt the low-speed maneuvers. The new one has the stock gearing and I'm enjoying it so far, I just try to avoid highways. 😉
Yeah, I did the oil trick once and it worked okay, but normally I let it all get dirty and then wipe it all down.
@@CubanRider i will let you know how the 43 feels, i plan on keeping this bike the long haul i'm gonna buy some carbon wheels and when i do i may try a 520 converion and a 44 rear depending on how the 43 feels =p
btw does the XR have the DDC? If so are you rockin the preload almost all the way in?
@@freemaysin5088 yup, DDC, it's pretty well set-up for my weight, I just put it on rider+luggage for track work 👍
whats your chain brand name and model name..?
Are you sticking with 42T rear long term?
And does it need any kind of speedo healer?
So how did the teeth ratio work for you would you do it differently now?
Nice vid, thanks!
Glad you liked it!
Please recommend where to get from and the no. of links needed in chain for S1000XR.
Thanks.
did you try last speed with 42 teeth sprocket?
How do you like the gear change you made going to a 17/42 do you still ride with that gearing ?
Hola Rider este cambio para q sirve ?
Chain adjustment was just touching the swingarm?
How many links on the chain if you used a small rear sprocket ?
EXCELENTE BRO,, TE RECOMIENDO PONER PAPEL ALUMINIO DEBAJO DEL FILTRO DE ACEITE Y DIRIGIRLO AL DEPOSITO DE ACEITE USADO, ASI NO ENSUCIAS TU HEADERS CON ACEITE... ;)
Ese aceite cuando se quema huele bien bueno, jaja
Cuban Rider jajaja indeed amigo.. perfume de hombre.
hi Cuban are you happy with this or would you rather go back to OEM ? and what benefits do you pull out of this ? do you have to adjust the ecu for the speed rating?
It works really well for highway cruising and the gears being more usable in certain situations. What you lose in exchange is low-speed maneuverability since you have to use the clutch a lot more. I'm not sure if I would do it again, maybe if I can find a quality 43 teeth rear sprocket.
Hi man what u think about to put 17 and 46?
Any idea why my chain on my new bike is to tight by 20mm
Hi
I am planning to do the same modification. Are you happy that you have done it. I am going to a 41t rear sprocket. What do you think
Anand from the UK
Hey Anand. I would say a 42t is the lowest I would want to go. With my 42t I have to slip the clutch considerably more than stock, especially when riding with a passenger. Once I get going I really like it, but just keep the start in mind.
HI, do you adjust the chain according to the BMW specs with the bike on the centre stand or side stand. In the manual it says to use the side stand but my dealer says to use the centre stand. I am confused!
Hey Antonio sorry I missed your post. I always use the center stand/rear stand to adjust the chain. I just order the HP adjusters which should make installing the wheels even easier.
I'm assuming these changes would affect the accuracy of your speedometer. On the XR can that be corrected in the software?
I'm not sure if it can be corrected, but the new gearing is more accurate than before. It used to a minimum of 3 mph difference stock, now it's a 2 mph difference at 80 mph.
Do you know if all the modifications void your warranty? I just got S1000R and would like to know before I start making changes :)
Thank you
Chain and sprockets are part of scheduled maintenance, so replacing them will not affect the warranty, unless you did something really wrong.
Hey Cubanrider, it's your the low suspension bike ?
I'm 6"2 and I'm getting a really good deal on a low suspension xr.
I'm afraid is to low for me .
At 6'2 the regular suspension XR would fit you perfect, but ride it first and see how it feels. I rode a lowered one and felt great, but I'm only 5'10. On this video the white bike is lowered: ua-cam.com/video/11cNdGuztWo/v-deo.html
@@CubanRider muchas gracias, amigo
I rode it and felt natural, I'm thinking in getting the tall seat to compensate
Hey cubanrider I live in Raleigh NC I currently have a 2008 CBR1000rr but I'm about to get a S1000XR we should get together sometime and go for a cruise. You live in Charlotte correct?
Hey Jerry, I live south of Richmond, VA, but I don't mind riding a few hours to go to places and ride. I'm actually leaving for the Tail of the Dragon in about an hour, I plan to spend the weekend down there. Let me know if you have any questions about the BMW.
Gracias!!
La herramienta para la cadena: sprocketcenter.com/tools-maintenance/motion-pro-pbr-chain-breaker-riveting-tool-kit.html; la tuerca de la rueda trasera es un 34mm, el par de apriete del piñon es 125NM y del eje trasero 100NM.
Mil gracias!!
oye no has pensado cambiarle el exosto??? aunque asi suena divina tambien...
Que va, después suena muy alto.
Solo la he escuchado en videos con otro exosto... Pero original suena muy bien... Otra pregunta... Que le mejorarias a esta moto o q tiene de malo?? Y lo mejor
It is Possible to put a bigger front sprocket? 18 teeth for example?
Unfortunately not, 17 is the highest you can do.
What size is the countershaft sprocket (front) nut size please?
32mm, highly recommend an impact wrench to remove, comes off like butter, wheel doesn't even move in neutral

Hi man, can you share with us what exactly chain and sprockets you bought. Want to know brand and price.
I'm interesting because I have 21 000 km on my original chain and now it sucks. I have to pull on it after each 200km.
Thanks, ride safe!
I went with the Superlite 520 set-up from these guys: sprocketcenter.com/street-sprocket-applications/bmw/s1000-xr-2015-2016.html
Went? Did you change it recently?
Just a month ago.
How many kilometers was on 520 chain?
Are you satisfied with the S21's? I'm stuck between this and Diablo Rosso 3 for my next tire set.
Hey Mitch, my bad I missed your post. Either tire is going to be excellent. I'm on my 4th set of S21s and I love that tire specially for the price, but the Rosso 3 gets some great reviews. Depending on your riding style and environment, the Rosso should do better in the wet, but the S21 is going to be more sticky at the edge.
Cuban Rider Thanks man! Appreciate it.
Hi can you tell me how many links less is chain with 42 sprocket Pls ?
matthew brown the new chain is 126 links, not sure how many links the original had.
Original 525 with 17/45 sprockets was 128 links for XR
126 now. :)
wich are the Best tires for the xr? or the Best in quality - price and life duration for you.
thanks
Pablo, tires depend on the needs of the rider, but I have found the Bridgestone Battlax S21 to suit my riding style and give it decent durability (over 3500 miles). So far they're the best tires for the money I've found.
Is your engine rattle sound normal?
As the timing chain guides start to get some wear, the engine starts to get noisier for sure. The fix is a manual chain tensioner, but at this point I'm not too concerned.
