  • I rebuilt the engine of this Triumph Trident T160 recently and although it ran well, the engine was smoking badly. I thought it was due to the piston rings not having bedded in and so took it apart again and had the cylinders re-honed and new rings fitted. However, the engine smoked just as badly! I therefore took the engine apart again (!) and discovered that the problem was actually that the new valve guides hadn't been fitted properly. With new oversize valve guides fitted I reassembled the engine and today was the big day! - Time to get it on the road and see if it was running properly. (Thank heavens to say it ran beautifully!)

Well done, Chris. A great job done, bike looks fantastic. You must be so relieved & pleased at finally sorting all the gremlins out. The owner is one lucky man to have someone as conscientious as you to work on his bike.

Martin, many thanks. It's not always been an easy job, but glad it's done now and that the bike runs really well.

Well done, good to see the replacement of the valve guides did the trick. 👍

He's had to strip and rebuild the top end three times to find out what SES did wrong. That is many, many hours of work. Avoid that company at all cost.

She's a beauty, Chris ... a testament to your skills as a restorer. Please, before you hand her back to the long-suffering owner, post some footage of you blatting around the Derbyshire countryside. Pretty please 👍

I'm afraid I didn't take any footage on Saturday (too eager to just get out!) but there's plenty of footage coming of the Matchless blasting round Derbyshire, and soon there'll be some of the Trident and Commando.

Great news Chris. Am delighted for you. Well done in getting it sorted. As classic car and bike enthusiasts, many of us will suffer the effects of poor quality parts and/or rushed jobs. I’ve just had a brand new QH fuel pump from a well known and reputable Ford performance parts supplier totally fail on me after less than 100 miles

    Nice work Chris!
As others have mentioned below, the owner should be very happy with your work and attention to detail. It was a long tough road, and you stayed with it and found the issue, just too bad you had to experience that. The beauty of these videos is now others are educated and know what to inspect prior to assembly. Many good miles to have on this machine!!

Hi chris , great , so what would be the cranking compression on the trident, with the fresh motor ? Cheers

I did check the compressions when I first built the engine, before I'd started it and with the engine cold and got about 110 psi as I remember (it's on one of the earlier videos). Now it's done a few miles I'll check it later today with the engine warm and let you know.
