A cool-headed amateur pilot successfully completed an emergency landing with his family onboard after a major technical issue.
Though Devin Miller, 33, works in consumer marketing in Texas, his hobby and passion is flying planes.
While flying wife Melanie and their two young children from Atlanta to Houston on September 1, Devin planned to land at their scheduled fuel stop in Mississippi.
However, when Devin began to slow the plane and line up the approach to land, to his shock and horror he realised the performance of the controls were not responding to his inputs.

Both parents stayed cool the entire time. You only got a glimpse into the actual stress involved after they came to a stop and removed their headsets. That relief was absolutely palpable. Well done!
The kid in the back looked like he didn't notice that something weird has happened.
@@volodyanarchist probably how the parents wanted it

that's just the adrenalin dump, it's exhausting. anyway, this is just white competence. really nothing special. this is just what we do.
Imagine the added pressure of having your entire family on board. He did well.
It's stressful enough being alone, but having two generations at risk must raise the blood pressure a bit haha
Personally I think it would help me focus.
@@snakeinthegrak8969 I guess it could do either. I’m just hoping I never have to find out 😂

Stuck throttle at least at some level allowing level flight or slight climb is better than no throttle and you are coming down within glide range wherever you are. Being able to arc around the field and troubleshoot is a doable situation. Stressful as hell though but at least you can work the issue. Having the family on board sucks.
Must have been so hard to concentrate on resolving this critical emergency with generic instrumental metal playing so loudly in the background
The music is not playing inside the aircraft. It was overlaid later on during the video editing.

Having that precious cargo on board influenced his determination to get it on the ground safely, I'm sure. If you watch the wife closely as they begin to touch down and immediately after, you can see her respiration increase drastically. She can finally release the tension that was keeping her calm so her husband could fly. She understood the price of panic.
She was panicking royally instead of trying to help him remain calm

The music is super annoying. Can barely understand what they're saying over the radio. Next time please no.
Look at his expression at the end. Throws hands, laughs, one lap, smiles… then rubs the sweat of under his nose, mouth and chin and realizes the inherent danger that it is to operate any machinery, that could kill you if it goes wrong and you don’t make it. Know the feeling all you well. Good job!!
20 years ago I experienced a similar emergency in my 182 Cessna. The throttle cable became separated from the carburetor and remained in the full open position. I was literally holding the throttle in my hand when my wife asked if there was a problem. I replied, no honey no problem at all, I’ll just use the other throttle. She said ok and went back to her reading. I retarded the mixture and signed off with flight following. I started my descent into
Banning airport and manipulated the mixture throughout the approach and landing. No big deal 😊
Like one of my instructors always said, pressing the panic button never does anything, or help anyone for that fact.
I need proof, where's the video?
@@onesri6108 LoL you did read said 20 years ago right. Not exactly smart phone or go pro era you know. Guess you’re expecting him to be swapping out vhs-c cassettes while flying the plane?
Cool story , my Grandad flew a Cessna in New Zealand , top dresser pilot. His most scary situation was crash landing into a river bed . He was on his way to give back his plane that he decided he didn't want to fly anymore . Had complained to his company for a long time that they should replace it but they refused. Luckily he was not too badly injured 🤪
If I'm not mistaken, doing that sacrifices the engine to save the aircraft? I.E. messing with the mixture at low altitude (I'm a student pilot).
Always the first words you want to hear from the tower. "Uh oh!"

Not a situation i'd ever want to be in with kids onboard. Guy handled it like a pro.

This Frigging CHAD better never have to ask his wife for hoo-ha.
Nothing to worry about, just the cable that connects the throttle to the engine broke and if it happens, the engine goes to full power and he needs to cut off the engine before landing...
I was thinking the same thing....technically anything the PIC feel is an emergency is an "emergency" however, having too much power isn't something I would be too worried about. Use that power to climb over the nearest airport and then it's a simple mixture idle cutoff and a spiral to landing. Every pilot practices this from private to commercial. Not to take away from the guys composure but this was a non even in my opinion.
@@matthewh9746 not a non event. Not everyone is 'Sully'.

Broken throttle cable!!!??? I don't fly but my thoughts were shut it off and go for a belly landing. It looks like he was able to lower the landing gear. Saved the family and saved the plane. What a great job pilot. I've heard this happens to cars too.
I would have gone straight up into space and see if they could dock with the fake space station there.
Shame to see so much incorrect information tossed around as fact. I've had this happen on my single engine airplane. It certainly is surprising and makes you think a bit. Perhaps being an engineer made it more obvious to me at the time: it is simple to reduce power without a throttle... just pull the mixture. The engine keeps turning because the prop is windmilling, but the engine stops producing power.
If you want a bit more power, add a bit more fuel. The engine will pop and sputter a bit, or at least mine did. I clearly remember flying over a church on final that Sunday morning, feeling bad about the racket I was making over their service. The engine is very controllable this way. I even taxied up onto the ramp by continuing to control mixture. The propeller is very heavy and acts like a flywheel, keeping the engine turning as you add and remove fuel manually.
I called the 'after hours' number on the door of the FBO, they had the bolt and hardware I needed (at no charge no less!) and I continued the trip. Nice folks there.
I'm sure this event was stressful for those on board, but they got to the right answer. I'm sure that once the pilot tried it he found as I did that it quickly becomes natural to use the mixture, so as the aviation saying goes, "the safe execution of the maneuver was never seriously in doubt." Always nice when that works out.
Hmm. I've owned literally hundreds of cars, boats. Hot rods, tractors, motorcycles etc....and I've never had a throttle cable break. Why is it common on airplanes? Lol. Shouldn't be that difficult to design a throttle that can't break, or at least some type of back up system.
the obvious isn't always the right answer, this is a critical situation and not because I say so but because I did a search after it happened to me and guess what ? 50% of the pilots died
So its NOT simple and you need other factors, check my post
@@MrCoffeekelly Apparently, you’ve never owned a VW T2.

when parents go PRO mode... HELL YEAH!!
Seems like there may have been a key point or two left out! Did he kill the engine? How did he slow down enough to drop the gear? Here is a good training tool for broken throttle cable landing and the key pieces are missing!
I thought I heard him declare he would make a power-off landing. Long final. Field made. Kill engine. Aircraft slows to gear speed. Land.
The person that put this video together obviously isn't a pilot. A pilot would NEVER put music to this. A pilot would never omit the point at which he got the gear down and killed the engine.
@@rrcaniglia if he killed the engine after touchdown why he continued rolling? It seemed like the engine was still on.
First -Not a pilot. He changed the pitch of the propeller and then used fuel mixture to both slow down for the wheels to drop and to almost kill the engine. I'm sure he'll have to give it a tune up and maybe even get a shop to adjust the prop after getting the cable fixed. I seen another story about a full throttle landing and a mechanic said at high speed changing the pitch of the blade drastically can bend or damage the prop and the everything should be inspected. Of course when turning the fuel mixture so far to kill the engine will probably foul the plugs out.
@@ondrejpiskula163 he said he was doing a power-off landing, meaning he'd shut the engine down before he landed. And he kept rolling because he was probably moving at somewhere in the 60-80 mph range, so it takes a while to stop. It's not like a car.
