I find it natural, that one would learn to sign for their partner! I would definitely learn it for my good friends. I wish it was just part of school education. Where i live, the world of the hearing and the world of the deaf/hard of hearing are completely separated. In my 24 years of life I have only once talked to a deaf person! And i am a very extroverted person and tend to talk to everyone in my vecinity...
I'm from England and I'm pretty sure this is not common to many schools here, but my school did run a series of lessons on disability awareness. There were sessions on adaptive technology, recognising inaccessibility - eg curbs where there could be ramps, heights of light switches, narrow doorways, certain colour patterns which were bad for some people (I'll be honest, that one I can't remember too clearly but I think it was to do with autism?), etc. One of the sessions was about BSL and we learnt some basic signs. It was a really good week and I wish every school did something like that (but obviously with whatever sign language is relevant to their geography).
Idk if mental illness is seen as a disability, but my partner has learned a lot about my triggers and how to comfort me when I'm in a bad place. He's incredibly understanding and doesn't put any pressure on me to do things that mentally healthy people can do but I can't. The hardest thing for me was to learn to trust that I don't burden him, and also learning to communicate to avoid misunderstandings, that could spiral into intense anxiety. Getting into a serioua relationship for the first time almost "forced" me to take responsibility and work on my mental health to try and get better. It motivated me because suddenly my illness affected someone else's life so much. I know I am lucky to be in a position where that is possible and I am very grateful for that.
Yes! This! Went through the same things with my first love who is still my love. I feel unbelievably lucky to have him and I know he feels the same about me. It's such a blessing to have someone to grow up with. But it's important to remember if they weren't there you still need to work on theses things and to learn to love yourself so you don't rely on their love to motivate you.
@Aurie Love You are so strong to do that. I am really glad you got out and I hope you are doing well! No one deserves to be with a partner that doesn't respect them.

I remember a year back when I met Chella and MaryV for a brief couple of moments at a pride event in New York in American Eagle. I watched many of their videos and followed their work for months by then, and I really thought that I would be accomodating for Chella's hearing. But then, after meeting Chella (he was the first person that I met that is deaf) I realized I had so much to learn about trying to make the environment for deaf individuals more welcoming and accomodating for them. I was extremely nervous because they made a huge impression on me navigating as an artist. I spoke ridiculously fast, and when he asked me to repeat myself I spoke extremely slow to try to make it easier to read my lips. (If anything that made my lip movements a lot less clear looking back, and to this day I fear that I insulted them). Watching and following videos has inspired me to learn ASL. And although I really don't know much at all, I was able to help a table (as a waitress) using bits and pieces of ASL to make their experience better. I only met Chella and MaryV once, but I hope I can meet them again because their patience and kindness made me want to combat my communication barrier for deaf and hard of hearing individuals rather than just avoid learning something new, helpful, and intimate for others. All in all, thank you for sharing your perspective with the world, and for meeting and dealing with me despite the fact that I struggled to take into perspective all the things that make a difference in your two's world. :)
We brought our son home four months ago. Before he joined our family he'd had no exposure to ASL. The first time my son met someone outside of our family who also signs, his face LIT UP like you wouldn't believe.
I met a maid here in asia that's deaf. He went to school for asl but he doesn't have anyone to communicate that with. People in this area are ignorant with people in certain disabilities. He sometimes get physically abused by his dad because of miscommunication? I'm trying my best to help him out but communication is difficult with sign language. I'm learning a bit from your videos. Thank you for educating us about your world 😊❤️
Waw... I'm always amazed how calming and attentive Mary V is... She's incredibly caring and sweet, and the bond between these two souls is just so heartwarming. Thank you for being who you are ❤️
Aww I'm crying! She learned because she truly loves you darling. I adore you both ❤️ been following you both since the beginning. God bless 🙏😇❣️❣️❣️❣️❣️❣️❣️
First of all, Chella love your shirt. lol Thank you and MaryV for sharing your experiences and educating those of us who don't have experience with the deaf/hearing impaired community. There are many issues that hearing people would never consider. For example, I saw a story about a married couple who made a point to purchase a round dining table so the husband could have a clear view of family/friends when lip reading.
@@MuhammadImran-ln4fz Not good, Muhammad. You took three days to respond so I was left confused as to your true feelings. I don't think this relationship is going anywhere.
I cried. This whole video is full of love!! I’m so happy you guys are finding ways to help. You got this Chella, you’re strong and we’re all proud of you!!
Some of the subtitles are incorrect and could cause a misunderstanding. There's a part where Chella said something along the lines of being deaf and non-verbal does NOT invalidate a person, but said validate in the subs.
I'm a 21 and I also have two cochlear implants. Neither I have deaf friends with cochlear implants. It helps me so much to see you together! You are so strong!! Love you so much!!! From IT
Hi Chella and Mary V! I literally cried during this video (don’t worry it was happy tears!) because Chella, I relate to you so much! To the point where we even have the same brand of cochlear implants 😂. I am 20 years old. Just like you Chella I was mainstreamed. I lost my hearing when I was 4 for unknown reasons and doctors told my parents not to teach me ASL so that I could continue to speak. Just like you I am able to vocalize and everyone around me forgets that I am deaf. I am learning how to advocate for myself and this video taught me A LOT. I do not have any deaf friends and it can be very frustrating at times when I’m in groups or ask someone to repeat themselves. I also just feel so alone in this journey at times because of my disability and inability to be able to talk to someone who can relate to me so I often isolate myself. Keeping up with your journey and being able to relate to you has really helped me so thank you so much for educating me and the world. You are such a role model for me. I would love to be able to talk to you and this is a long shot but maybe even be friends. My Instagram is @madison.balint. I hope you see this and just again thank you so much.
I love that MayV learned sign language to be able to communicate and show how commited she is in the relationship and that shows who she is as a person, so very thoughtful, I mean if I was your friend or even had deaf friends I would willingly learn it too, because I would hate myself to make them feel sided, from of a barrier we could easily overcome, it's much easier to try from both sides, so reading lips and communicating with our hands would be a good achievement^^ love the message, you both are such awesome souls
Wow, you guys just keep on getting more and more beautiful as the years go on. It has nothing to do with looks but poise, confidence and the way you are open and carry yourselves.
Hi! I asked about communicating in the dark :) I felt so happy and grateful to see my question in the video! thank you for including it. Here I can also explain my tap system, the Instagram question box is too small.... So I'm hard of hearing when I have my cochlear implant in and basically deaf when I have it off, which is how I sleep. My partner is hearing. Usually we'll lay in bed for a while and talk before I take my implant off, but after, it's usually me that still wants to say or ask something. If I ask something I try to phrase it either as a question that can be answered with yes or no (or I don't know) OR I sort of give options in the question, if that makes sense. Open questions don't really work with the tap system, but it's usually not that kinda question. So if an answer is yes, we tap twice, if it's no, we tap once.. In the beginning of setting up the tap system we kept forgetting which tap went with which, but my way of remembering is this: Yes/affirmative/positive is kinda like a plus, '+', which takes two lines to write, and a no/negative it's like a minus, '-', so just the one line. Sometimes the answer is I don't know, so then it's three taps. If it's a question like, say 'Do you want to take the bike tomorrow, or the bus, or walk?' you tap the 'option' you mean. So if you mean biking you tap once, the bus twice, or thrice for walking. If my partner didn't hear or understand the question he draws a circle on me with his finger, kinda like a repeat symbol. It's not based on morse code or anything (though we are considering learning it) and it's not a perfect system, but it works for us :) Thanks for sharing how you guys navigate this in your lives, it's really chill and interesting to hear your experiences. x Melissa
I go to sign-language classes because I love it and I think it's important to know how to comunicate with deaf people. My teacher usually make noises (like step loudly in the floor) so she can get our attention. I think it's amazing that even though she is totally deaf, she manage to do sounds for us. And our way to get her attention is, like you said, tap her, make movements... I love comunicating with her
You two are so CUTE. I almost cried just watching this. I’m actually learning ASL (PSE specifically) in school and honestly it’s really amazing. Chella, you inspire me to keep learning and doing what I love. BTW: You were absolutely amazing as Jericho! Congrats on the role! 🤟🤟
Im so happy to come across this video on instagram suggestions. Im disabled and have very rare condition that started effecting me around 19. My life completely changed and ive been struggling to not feel like a burden,to advocate for myself, to conserve my energy. Its been almost 10 years and its really hard when the world isn't set up for you there's so much internalized ableism as well. I'm not def but can understand a part of that difference in society and isolation. I also love seeing people sign because I always wanted to learn. You both are cute together and thanks for making these videos
both of you are the most attractive people I've ever seen, and together you are the greatest couple I have ever seen. you both are a large part of my inspiration!
I want someone to look at me the way chella looks at Mary v 😭❤️ also you’ve mentioned this throughout the video a bit but what are some other ways I can be a better ally to the deaf community ? You’ve inspired me to learn asl and you’re videos helped but I’m still struggling to learn how to properly sign the words . ❤️🤟🏾
Is there a way to contribute to the captioning in this video? I notice there's a few typos that change the meaning of some of the things they say completely, and I just want everyone to understand what they're saying. Lovely seeing these two share their experiences with us again; I am always happy to see a healthy, communicative relationship among younger people!
hi chella and maryv! it was really helpful for me as a hearing person to know that over enunciating and raising my voice isnt helpful for deaf people. I am still not sure how best to communicate with deaf individuals but I definitly having a better understanding now and would feel a lot more confident in just asking those people how best to communicate with them. Thankyou for opening this conversation up! Sending love
Videos like this are so important and I am so glad that you both are willing to be such courageous and strong advocators for communities who don't have as much of a voice in our society, thank you!!
I've missed you guys. Even if you do not upload anything, I feel that you guys doing okay with such ups-downs there. I feel that you can get over hardships with your pure love and little sacrifices for each other. You both made me in love that true & pure love exists in a way you guys have. I'm so far away from you but I feel that such kind of feeling I've never experienced. I also love watching your videos! You both are younger than me and I just want to hug you with all my sincerity. I hope this reaches out. Please be happy & healthy. 💙
Thank you! My partners also deaf and it's very interesting to hear another couples point of view. It's challenging sometimes but it doesn't bother me much. I genuinely love him for who he is! 🤗
Omg omg omg!!!!!!! I think it’d be really cool if you guys and this other UA-cam couple met. Either in person or zoom video chat 😅. They go by, “Sign Duo”. Though one couple is completely deaf and the other is not, they still communicate through ASL and have been since (I think) high school/college? Hope all goes well. Love y’all already ✨❤️❤️❤️❤️🤟🏽
i really appreciate what you said about your experiences being deaf. as a person who was born hard of hearing and was/is mainstreamed, i've always felt stuck between the hearing and the deaf world, and it's nice to see that others feel the same. great video :))
Iam Born with bilateral profound deafness (2005) and got my bilateral Cochlear Implants implanted in 2006. Iam super happy That my Implants are in my head for 14 years and they aren’t broken, Iam pretty proud of my implants for being there for 14 years and I never had a re-Implantation 🎉
you can tell what they have is true love, because they went trough so much in the past couple years, yet they're still together. amazing. i wish i had a relationship like this. God bless them🙏✨💕
It's nice that you want to help others in the way you both do. Being hearing impaired impacts on daily life, and it can be difficult to cope with it, more so I think if you have been able to hear in the past. In big cities, there is more of a chance for a club or social place to meet others with the same kind of condition, where I live, our only club closed down as it is a small town. Plus, being a small town there is not a lot of hearing-impaired people who want to join a club. So, it is thanks to people like yourselves and others plus videos that are at least bridging a small gap.
You two are SO CUTE ♥ This video is very helpful to people that wants to understand how it is to date a deaf person as an able body person - and more people should talk about those topics that you guys mention on the video, because some people REALLY DON`T KNOW how to communicate with people that are hard of hearing or deaf. Thanks for the video ♥
The way he talks about you ....awwww Girl you better keep him close, you don't find a lot of people appreciating the little things about you. You're adorable..
Plllleeeaaassseee it kills me every time a disabled person says or feels like they are a burden. You didn’t ask to be born the way you are but you better be proud to be you and you are perfect the way you are. She could have anyone else but she loves you and she’s with you- she wants you so please don’t feel that way.
Both of you so beautiful and don't forget you make something good for someone else who has to get better. God bless both of you. And first time I saw your video on UA-cam.
I'm a new follower, but you've inspired me to start practicing ASL so if I ever go to NY, or you guys come to CA, and I get lucky enough to see you, I can say ✋🤟 Chella & MaryV!
love this sm, and thank you for the tips on being a good ally!! always trying to figure out the right way to navigate deaf spaces and deaf/hearing intersections and it's really amazing to see how you both work with it and discuss it out in the open. much love!
So I just found you guys. And watched a few of your videos. Subscribing, by the way. First, MaryV, big kudos for you learning ASL. Keep doing so. I can honestly say the biggest issues I’ve had in relationships was communication. Signing would’ve saved mine tenfold. And since you guys asked, I’m going to share (which is odd being how private I am). I’m profoundly deaf. Born deaf. Hear some low frequencies. Pretty much don’t hear any high frequencies. So, yeah. I only hear vowels... barely. HA!! Anyways. I was best friends for 12yrs and dated for the last 8 of those 12yrs a hearing lady. Terribly long story short, we broke up over a year ago. And I’m sure we’d still be together now if she learned to sign. From day one, she said she would. But “never got around to it”. And communication is key. We were very happy together. Had a real good relationship. The break up was very sudden. And painful. I’m not going to go into the why. But in the end, if I didn’t miss so much in communication being deaf, I’ve no doubt we would’ve worked our way through it. MaryV, definitely keep learning sign. It’ll save so much heartache. Chella, bro... watching you, I see how much we grew up the same. But also, a little differently. Yet, there’s a similarity, including the no deaf accent, mainstream schooling. I can’t help feeling a certain kinship to you that I’ve never felt for other deafs. Honestly... I thought I was alone!! 😂
I didn’t know deaf puns existed! A whole new world! I loved the video, it was very helpful as to how to approach situations with deaf people and videos with you two are absolutely heartwarming, I feel you two are so beautifully genuine and well-intentioned!
I have hearing impairments as well but not like completely losing it. I began to wear hearing aid and I disliked it in the beginning. The teacher made me get a speaker instead and I disliked the speaker even more, so she had to make me get back on track with my hearing aid. So it is all good now, though I’m still annoyed about my hearing, but I’m okay now and better than I ever was.
Still trying to learn more about deaf culture as it's completely new to me. Just a few quick questions: 1. How well can you hear with the cochlear implants in? (You seldom looked at MaryV's signs or lips when you're recording, so I'm guessing you're hearing pretty well, but not quite at the normal level yet?) 2. Why do you have to take the implants out at home? Is it tiring to have them in or is it to do with the battery level? (I wear contact lenses so I'm imagining maybe it's tiring like the lenses, in that my eyeballs get dry if I have my lenses on for more than 10 hours a day, so I have to take them out and wear glasses at home.) Thank you for educating the public, not only about deaf culture, but also about love. Love as genuine and determined as yours is rare in this era, where everyone else is busy running, dashing about and have no time to walk slowly next to someone.
Thank you both for the video! I always appreciate the opportunity to learn more about deaf experiences, and about how I can help in deaf or hearing led spaces as someone working towards a career in interpreting ♥️
don't believe deaf succes get a girlfriend because this Deaf guy got a cochlear implant is easy pick up her hearing. I don't know what another deaf guys are hard to finds girls.
You know I was watching Titans and I was super interested in your character Jericho. It was killing me because I’m like I know this dude from somewhere. And I love how this video gave me my answers cuz I remember watching your videos way before you were on Titans. But that’s besides the point, I love your guys supportive and loving relationship. Learning and loving at the same time is very beautiful💖💖💖
Such a beautiful love you guys have. I'm pissed I never took asl classes in highschool, I think I assumed it would be too hard for me to learn nd I'd fail the class. I am starting to watch your asl videos like the empathy one . I watched Switched at Birth and low-key wanted to fall in love with someone that happened to be deaf idk idk idk. But Mary V is stunning, I have no words to describe her beauty, her lips her perfect teeth smile, head shape hair color beautiful eyebrows, her HEART ughhhh Im crying. When you said she's the most accommodating person you ever met in your life my heart 💓 cried. I love both of your shirts lol the red shirt looks so good on her she's so pretty n now I feel sad and lonely.
Would you two be open to making a video where you sign while you're speaking? I'm both a visual and an auditory learner and I like learning ASL through watching people carry a normal conversation while signing. Thank you both for you honesty and willingness to share your experiences!
I had lip reading classes in elementary schools but I never had the chance to learn ASL as a child. I could take as an elective in high school but couldn't take up a foreign language if I did that. I'm very good at reading and writing in other languages. I eventually got the same phonetics classes for German that helped me with lip reading but I still haven't had these for any of the other languages I know. I'd like to one day learn ASL and German sign language but I know I need to be taught in a classroom setting and not just pick it up online.
I feel the power how. actually he wearing cochlear implant. Im also hearing impaired or hard of hearing. I wearing siemens hearing aids to listen music and whatever i want to do in beautiful environment.

From IT
THE CUTEST MOST INSPIRATIONAL COUPLE IVE EVER SEEN🥺🥺
Omg the way he looked At her in the beginning was so cufeee
It's not based on morse code or anything (though we are considering learning it) and it's not a perfect system, but it works for us :)
Thanks for sharing how you guys navigate this in your lives, it's really chill and interesting to hear your experiences.
I love comunicating with her
I'M SO GLAD YALL ARE STILL TOGETHER AFTER ALL THESE YEARS!! GOD BLESS YOU BOTH
You two are so CUTE.
THIS IS THE MOST GORGEOUS COUPLE I HAVE SEEN IN MY LIFE
hi cutie
Awww when he got shy in the beginning my heart went “ 🥺👉🏽👈🏽 “
I've missed you guys. Even if you do not upload anything, I feel that you guys doing okay with such ups-downs there. I feel that you can get over hardships with your pure love and little sacrifices for each other. You both made me in love that true & pure love exists in a way you guys have. I'm so far away from you but I feel that such kind of feeling I've never experienced. I also love watching your videos! You both are younger than me and I just want to hug you with all my sincerity. I hope this reaches out. Please be happy & healthy. 💙
they're such a beautiful couple omg 🥺
You two are cosmically aligned, the both of you are so beautiful, physically, spiritually, mentally, emotionally. Ugh makes my heart melt, luv u guys
Love y’all already ✨❤️❤️❤️❤️🤟🏽
the way they look at each other is priceless ❤️
I just realized he was from the Titans
i really appreciate what you said about your experiences being deaf. as a person who was born hard of hearing and was/is mainstreamed, i've always felt stuck between the hearing and the deaf world, and it's nice to see that others feel the same. great video :))
God bless them🙏✨💕
*Imagine being both attractive and having a good heart* *can't relate*
It's nice that you want to help others in the way you both do. Being hearing impaired impacts on daily life, and it can be difficult to cope with it, more so I think if you have been able to hear in the past. In big cities, there is more of a chance for a club or social place to meet others with the same kind of condition, where I live, our only club closed down as it is a small town. Plus, being a small town there is not a lot of hearing-impaired people who want to join a club. So, it is thanks to people like yourselves and others plus videos that are at least bridging a small gap.
Chella: Hi!
MaryV: Hiii
Me: Hihihihihihihi
You two are SO CUTE ♥ This video is very helpful to people that wants to understand how it is to date a deaf person as an able body person - and more people should talk about those topics that you guys mention on the video, because some people REALLY DON`T KNOW how to communicate with people that are hard of hearing or deaf.
Thanks for the video ♥
I met MaryV over a year ago & she was super sweet! You guys are such a sweet, lovely couple! Love you guys
I want what they have, its truly beautiful...
The way he talks about you ....awwww
Girl you better keep him close, you don't find a lot of people appreciating the little things about you. You're adorable..
You are both so beautiful and compassionate!
THE WAY HE LOOKS AT HER IM DEAAAD 😭😭😭😭 I want to be looked at that way too
I love u forever ❤❤❤❤😍😍😍
I like u seriousely 💑💑🌷🌷
Well you merry me i make u so so happy also 💏💏👄👄💋💋💋💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗
Plllleeeaaassseee it kills me every time a disabled person says or feels like they are a burden.
And first time I saw your video on UA-cam.
your videos are so appreciated! any time i see any type of content from you and MaryV i am so inspired and happy to be more educated. xxx
I'm a new follower, but you've inspired me to start practicing ASL so if I ever go to NY, or you guys come to CA, and I get lucky enough to see you, I can say ✋🤟 Chella & MaryV!
I wish I could meet you both. I admire you both so warmly. What kind and gentle people you are. 💜💜💜
love this sm, and thank you for the tips on being a good ally!! always trying to figure out the right way to navigate deaf spaces and deaf/hearing intersections and it's really amazing to see how you both work with it and discuss it out in the open. much love!
The ASL puns r so cool
I loved the video, it was very helpful as to how to approach situations with deaf people and videos with you two are absolutely heartwarming, I feel you two are so beautifully genuine and well-intentioned!
i love the energy and vibe between u two 💓 much love
I have hearing impairments as well but not like completely losing it. I began to wear hearing aid and I disliked it in the beginning. The teacher made me get a speaker instead and I disliked the speaker even more, so she had to make me get back on track with my hearing aid. So it is all good now, though I’m still annoyed about my hearing, but I’m okay now and better than I ever was.
the way they look at each other 🥺🥺🥺
Still trying to learn more about deaf culture as it's completely new to me. Just a few quick questions:
1. How well can you hear with the cochlear implants in? (You seldom looked at MaryV's signs or lips when you're recording, so I'm guessing you're hearing pretty well, but not quite at the normal level yet?)
2. Why do you have to take the implants out at home? Is it tiring to have them in or is it to do with the battery level? (I wear contact lenses so I'm imagining maybe it's tiring like the lenses, in that my eyeballs get dry if I have my lenses on for more than 10 hours a day, so I have to take them out and wear glasses at home.)
Thank you for educating the public, not only about deaf culture, but also about love. Love as genuine and determined as yours is rare in this era, where everyone else is busy running, dashing about and have no time to walk slowly next to someone.
The way he looks at her... My heart melted T.T I hope someone looks at me like that some day
Thank you both for the video! I always appreciate the opportunity to learn more about deaf experiences, and about how I can help in deaf or hearing led spaces as someone working towards a career in interpreting ♥️
I am an able bodied person but I feel so appreciative of you for spreading the truth about misconceptions and for showing us your stories ❤️🤟🏼
All they said is relationship goals for who deaf and hearing couples ...🤟🏻
don't believe deaf succes get a girlfriend because this Deaf guy got a cochlear implant is easy pick up her hearing. I don't know what another deaf guys are hard to finds girls.
You guys are inspiring and I am working towards a healthy outlook on things to be grateful for my experiences. Thank you
I am learning French Sign Language and I am so glad to understand a few sign!
You are a beautiful couple thank you for this video!
Love this! Thank you for sharing. 💕 Sending my blessing. 🙏🙏🙏
This was educational. I think I'll definitely become a better ally to the deaf community with this advice you've given. Thanks.
I'm already crying cuz both of you are so cute and soft 🤧💖💖💖 thanks for talking about this 💖
You know I was watching Titans and I was super interested in your character Jericho. It was killing me because I’m like I know this dude from somewhere. And I love how this video gave me my answers cuz I remember watching your videos way before you were on Titans. But that’s besides the point, I love your guys supportive and loving relationship. Learning and loving at the same time is very beautiful💖💖💖
0:09 what was that !!! I would have melted into a mush aaaaa too cute
CHELLA, I HAVE THE SAME SHIRT AS YOU!!!!!!
I love yall they're so motivating to be good people
that little interaction in the beginning made my heart go😩💓💓
I really love you guys. you give me so much hope
Goooaaallls they are so cute and sound so happy and adorable
you both look so good together, wish you a good life :)
What a beautiful couple.
They are so magnetic 🖤
...you both are amazing
