DUDE! This was an EPIC way to track down my "out of nowhere" no start issue after installing my suspension and brakes! It ended up being spark for me because I'd forgotten that the hood slammed down on the car while it was in the air and there was a board resting on top of my coil wire. When the hood slammed down, it broke the cable off of the coil cable going to my distributor and I didn't even realize it until I went to press down on the coil wire and realized it was broken off inside of the boot and I could feel it. I repaired the wire and it started right up! Thanks for the tutorial!
Dude thank you so much! Turns out my connector on my fuel pump was loose but this helped me save money before I started getting relays and new pumps! First Bmw I’ve owned and definitely learning lol
Thank you for this video man! I just picked up an 87 325i with a no start issue and after watching your video and doing what you said it ended up being the fuel pump relay! So thank you again sir!
Thank You!!! Luckily mine started after jumping the fuel pump and main relay. Wish I would've known this when mine stalled while driving, it could've saved me $150 I paid for a tow truck... sigh, but now keeping the wire in my glove box in case it happens again.

Hey dude nice video. I’m having a starting problem with my 1987 325i. I’ve had the car for 20 years and just replaced the head from a failed timing belt. I got it all going and was driving about 2 miles and the engine shut off. I wired the fuel pump relay and it works. Got a new fuel pump relay and it worked for a full day (50 miles) then erratic high idle (2000 rpm) and it shut off again. Wired the fuel pump relay again and it has been running for a few days like that. When I wire the fuel pump relay the fuel pump doesn’t come on like yours did in the video when you wired the fuel pump relay. It does work though cause it fires right up with it wired. I also have a three blink check engine light come on that means the coolant temperature sensor is faulty. New one is on the way. Ohm meter wasn’t consistent on the cts on the thermostat housing. Been a three month journey getting this Beamer back together and she runs good just a few things to be addressed. I hope I don’t have the camshaft and crankshaft position sensors backwards like you talked about. The metal clip facing upwards and positioned on the drivers side of the two connections is the crankshaft sensor yah? It’s raining so I’ll check them first thing. Any help would be awesome.
Yes that is the crank position sensor and induction sensor, if they are swapped it wouldnt run at all so thats not your issue. I would inspect the wiring to the fuel pump and all grounds. Its also possible that the fuel pump itself is going out and that would explain it working intermittently and could also cause the erratic idle.
Quick question, fuel pump didn’t start when jumping but I wanted to jump the main relay but the pins are different than you say. I’ve got 30, 87 x2, 86, and 85.
Followed all your steps to check why my 1990 E30 would not start. Seen that I didn't have any fuel flowing so I used the jumper wire to get the pump to run and it worked but the power wires to the pump were loose so it only worked part time. I had to wiggle them to get a connection. Checked the CPS, checked the DME relay and everything was good but still no fuel. Even with the wires contacting the pump. The last owner said "the filter was clogged" so I pulled it. Still no flow. Come to find out the wires to the pump were crossed! It would get power but the flow was backwards.

Very good video and helpful. I did all the tasks shown here, but mi E30 is still having hard to start only and only in a particular weather condition; when is humid in the morning. After it starts, anything can´t prevent it to start normal again. In a dry weather it starts relatively normal, even in the morning. But it went to worst by the years, because I remember that a few years before, it started very fast. I even changed the battery to test the fuel pump; with 12.7 Volts, and anyway, is still starting very hard and after cranking a long time, before killing the starter motor or the battery, weakly the combustion appears from low revolutions increasing to normal. Still I can hear that not all cylinders are working. After around 2 minutes since it started, the engine begins to run normal, without the sensation that one spark plug is gone or a cylinder is not combusting. Very weird.
The fact that the weather has an affect on how it starts has me thinking you need to check 3 things: Your distributor cap and rotor button, moisture can settle inside if the seal is deteriorated which would cause a rough cold start til it evaporated. I would also check your coolant temp sensor, an easy test for it is to just unplug it on a cold start and see if it starts easier, or after it has started and is idling rough you can unplug it and see if the idle smooths out. It is the blue sensor on the thermostat housing, very easy to get to.
Id start with checking relays then i would check the crank position sensor, make sure you replace with oem only. A bad cps will cause no spark or fuel on an M42 as well
@@CARSTUDIOYT i did replace crank sensor ..and did the test for relay as ur video connect no 87 and 30 with wire and i heard the fuel working ...does it mean that relay is not working ?

Hi, I have crank no start issue. I put a jumper wire in the fuel relay slot like in this video and my car starts up. So I went and replaced my fuel relay with a brand new one but the car still won't start. What should I check now. Would really appreciate any help from anyone. Thanks
man whats your part number on that fuel pump relay and how do I get one? also the mains relay how do I also source one??? I have a 1987 e30 euro spec... I sorta seem to find the fuel pump relay but that Mains one how man?
What part # is the CPS sensor? Got an 85' 325e cranks, no spark with all relays good and spark plugs/coil/distributor new so I'm thinking CPS. I can't find the genuine BMW sensor online and was wondering the part #. Online seems confusing with crankshaft and camshaft.
ETA cars are a little different. most if not all of them have the cps on back of the engine and use the flywheel for reference rather than the crank pulley like I cars. I dont have a part number for one but fcpeuro or pelican parts are good sources for oem parts.
how many prongs is your DME relay???? what exactly is it??? on my 1987 E30 235e I don't see this type of setup... I see a 4 pin 30a on the DME I see a 5pin 30a on the fuel pump and then a 4 pin 30a on the oxygen .... do you understand what im getting at man????
Last week my car just randomly turned off and didn’t want to turn over, I came back to it a couple days later it turned on but after a couple of minutes It just shut off, so I think it might be fuel pump
Need to pull the fuel line off the fuel rail and put it into a water bottle and crank the engine over. If you’re getting fuel check your spark next. If you have both of those then check your compression. Its possible the timing belt jumped a tooth or more or snapped.
Do you know if the e30 318i has a cps sensor? It has the 4 cylinder m10 engine. Can locate the cps on this engine and i cant find anything on it online.
Great vid! My 325 eta cranks, has fuel, but no spark. Measured 12V at the coil w/ ignition on. Coil resistance is within spec. What could be the issue? CPS? Main relay?
I would start by jumping the main relay like I do in the video and with it jumped, try to start the car. If it starts then its the main relay and if it doesnt I would suspect the CPS. On an ETA however, some if not all are a little different than M20B25 cars. If your cps isnt on the front like mine then its on the back of the block and uses the flywheel as reference.
Mine having the same issue I did all wat you guys did everything is good I got fuel and everything no spark and there’s no cps on the passenger side there’s one on the driver but not bolted on just clips on to a bracket
I replaced my dme but the car still doesn’t wanna start found out my dme was burnt i spray started fluid in throttle body when I have it wide open throttle I crank like it wants to start. But it doesn’t and I’m gettin fuel because I disconnect my fuel pressure regulator and fuel shoots out
I found problem by checking power wire from battery. Small black wire on positive post that going under hood on the side of main cable was corroded and not given power to main and fuel relays. I simply connect small wire to mean cable under the hood, and I have power for both relay.
Hey bud, I recently pulled the motor on my 1986 325. When I put the motor back in it wants to crank with no fire. The relays are getting power along with the fuel pump but the injectors are not. Just wondering if you have any guesses except CPS
I recently bought a e30 325e, and it starts and runs but has a rough idle. There was bad fuel in it but I cleaned it a little. Today it would start but then when I hit the gas it stopped working. Any advice?
I have a problem with my 325e 86 it only starts accelerating at half or full throttle if I stop accelerating it turns off install a new fuel pump from the tank and the fuel pump from the outside new fuel filter clean inyectors. check everything in your video but I can't get it to stay on without accelerating could you help me
I need help !!! I have a 86 ES E30 with jumper cables on, the horn, Radeo, lights gauges all work. I know I have fuel 1 line above the valve cover has a hair line crack in the hose lol and it drips fuel while attempting to start it. But all I keep getting out of the car is a slow motion cranks. Car history I’m the 3rd owner purchased the car from a 80yr old man it’s completely stock. I’ve owned it for months I just want to hear it turn on !!!!!!! Please help.
Check for spark first and then if it has spark see if a little starting fluid will get it to fire then you know its just lacking fuel. But be sure to inspect timing belt before starting if it has sat for years.
I have an 85 bmw325e there's no spark the crank sensor is at the rear of the engine. I have replaced both sensors there, replaced coil, distributor cap and rotor button. Replaced both fuel pumps. And now it still has no spark.
Did you use an oem crank sensor? Have you checked the main relay as mentioned in the video? Do you have access to another car with a known good crank sensor you can try?
sorry for the delayed response, if you followed everything in this video and are getting fuel and spark then you should check your compression. If you followed all of these steps and still not getting fuel or spark then I would check the ignition switch, wiring, and ecu.
Hai my name is Ben, i hv BMW E30 MY PROBLEM IS MY CAR CRANK OVER BUT WONT FIRE UP, i hv fuel, i hv spark, i check fuel pressure up to 30 PSI , IM NOT SURE IS THAT ENOUGH FUEL PRESSURE TO EPEN UP FUEL INJECTORS? The only think the car can fire up if i pinched the fuel return line. Can you give me a hints what seem to be the problem?
It should have 40-50 psi at the fuel rail but i have ran these cars with a small 8 psi pump before just to test the engine. Check you C101 connector under the intake if its a late model. Id also see if it will run with starting fluid so you can narrow it down to a fuel/injector issue.
well the car is run when i pinched the return line , is that possible my fuel pump dont put enough pressure? because the car only have 29 PSI , ACCORDING TO YOU 40 UP TO 50 PSI@@CARSTUDIOYT
ii spray with starting fluid the car start, do you think the injectors problem? and again if the injector problem why the car start if i pinced the return line? thank you for your time to teply my message i relally appreciated..@@CARSTUDIOYT
I replaced both relays coil, cap, rotor I tried the jump wire the fuel pump kicks on but when I turn the key over the fuel pump shuts off while using the jump wire
You may have a cps issue, I would run 2 jumper wires straight from the battery to the fuel pump and then try to start it and if it starts you may have a wiring issue. If it still doesnt, I would replace the cps with an oem one.
The cps is only one connector but it is identical to the tach sense connector beside it. If you accidentally swap them the car just wont start, it wont hurt anything.
What happened when you crossed the connectors for the CPS and the adjacent connector? Do you know what the other connector controls? I have been chasing down a no start on my 88. Fuel pump works and in fact if we try to start long enough we get fuel backing up into the intake and back to the air box.
@@CARSTUDIOYT thought I did. Had to sideline this project to work on others. Today I put the battery on a trickle charger. Tomorrow I will check spark. At one point it acted like it was going to start for about a second. Then nothing. Cranks fine and we definitely have fuel.
@@CARSTUDIOYT you mean check timing? As part of our refurb effort we did replace the belt and tensioner. This car has been off the road for at least 8 yrs and the owner died so I can’t get info about why it was parked.
Tested this morning. Pulled plug on six and got good spark. (Plugs are new). Checked CPS wire and as long as you use the mounting plate it looks like the two wires cannot be crossed as the plugs are oriented 180 degrees. Found plug under intake disconnected and reconnected it. Tried to crank and after a couple revolutions it started to catch like it was going to run but then died. Tried again and the engine spins but nothing happens. Now I smell gas. Makes me think there is something going on with the spark.
When I use the wire from pos side of coil to pos side of battery the air flow meter hums and the car starts. I put my hand on it to feel it, and it was humming away, and the car starts right up. When I pull that wire off, the car will not start. The CPS is new, wires and plugs are new., I changed out the chassis ground, new ignition switch, and borrowed a good CPU from friend. Still no start. Do you know why the jump wire is igniting the airflow sensor and starting the car?
Are you saying the car starts on its own when you connect that jumper wire? it sounds to me like you have a relay sticking. Also make sure its not your idle air control valve thats humming. I had the main relay sticking on my car years go and with the key off the idle air control valve was humming.
It starts when I turn the key and have the jumper wire connected. But the air flow sensor immediately comes on when I connector the wire, then turn key and it fires right up. Also thank you for the fast response.
@ 7:08 what is connected to the second 3 prong wire harness? Mine is just dangling there bc the previous owner removed what it was connected to. Can't find this info anywhere. Thanks
If you are talking about the identical plug beside the cps, that is the inductive pickup. It looks like a spark plug wire and goes to the number 1 plug wire, its supposed to aid in firing the injectors but several have said it doesnt affect the way the engine runs at all except possibly less mpg. If you look at a used set of plug wires on ebay you will see what it looks like, it just has a little plastic ring that wraps around the plug wire.
@@CARSTUDIOYT thank you. I was able to figure this out on a random BMW forum a guy had this same plug in that had fallen off. Many thanks for the reply
If you have power to the coil but no spark then i would definitely assume the coil is bad. You can buy a new one from an auto parts store for a very reasonable price.
Ooo man i got true all this problems.. Miss fire 1.3.5.. Test by test..change head gasket..still missfire... ......and bingo ..OC2 SENSOR..56 BUCKS.. I fill like shit after all.....

Fuse 11 does not pop
Swapped all relays from a running e30 (even tested my old relays in my running e30, '90 325is it starts up no problem with both sets)
Swapped in a new fuel pump 2x (I never hear it prime)
--> I don't hear the fuel pump when I jump the relays either
--> There was pressure in the fuel pump line when I swapped fuel pumps the second time
Swapped DME from a running 318is no start from me
New Crankshaft Position Sensor, same issue
Also swapped back to old CPS in case new aftermarket one was not running well
PO put too much oil in the car but I drained it and did a compression test

@@CARSTUDIOYT Yeah I have the original back in I'll try to get the pump some power this car has been a headache haha
Hello I had a question !
My e30 panel lights refuse to come on and does come on without warning and the car starts, where can i start checking?
What if you get fuel and no spark I have checked for spark but haven't got any coil is dead tried a spare it still doesn't give spark
Thank you good info.
Hi, I have crank no start issue. I put a jumper wire in the fuel relay slot like in this video and my car starts up. So I went and replaced my fuel relay with a brand new one but the car still won't start. What should I check now. Would really appreciate any help from anyone. Thanks
Is it 30 and 87 on the dme relay
man whats your part number on that fuel pump relay and how do I get one? also the mains relay how do I also source one??? I have a 1987 e30 euro spec... I sorta seem to find the fuel pump relay but that Mains one how man?
My fuel pump is wired to a flip switch and not the the fuse doesn’t work but the fuel pump dose but I still reserve so spark could that be a problem
Blew my fusible link and fixed the short. Is there any reason i shouldnt replace with just a normal fuse?
nope, as long as its the same amperage you will be fine.
What’s the part number for the inline fuse? Is it 50 amp?
My e30 I’ve had for years never once started I want to be pointed on the right direction 325es!
Inspect the timing belt for cracks/dry rotting first and foremost
I have a 1985 Bmw 535! With a no spark issue anybody know what could be wrong?
Hi bro i need some help
what cause of no spark on sparkplug bmw 735i??
Last week my car just randomly turned off and didn’t want to turn over, I came back to it a couple days later it turned on but after a couple of minutes It just shut off, so I think it might be fuel pump
It could def be the fuel pump starting to lock up
What if my ignition coil has no power? And I replaced the dme relay with a new one
Check to see if your fuel pump also has no power. Of thats the case then its your crank sensor
I checked the terminals on the ignition coil it has 12Volts. I don’t hear the fuel pump prime- how do I check if it has power?
I’ve check and or change everything you said to look at and it still won’t start
Thank you!!
Mine having the same issue I did all wat you guys did everything is good I got fuel and everything no spark and there’s no cps on the passenger side there’s one on the driver but not bolted on just clips on to a bracket
I had the same issue. Even replaced me CPS which is on the bell housing. Didn’t work. So I replaced the DME, and it started just fine
I replaced my dme but the car still doesn’t wanna start found out my dme was burnt i spray started fluid in throttle body when I have it wide open throttle I crank like it wants to start. But it doesn’t and I’m gettin fuel because I disconnect my fuel pressure regulator and fuel shoots out
Can anyone tell me where the CPS is on my 1985 325E! I can’t find it !
Any one, I need HELP!
1985 BMW 325e automatic, 4 door.
Change both fuel pumps, filter, crankshaft position sensors.
No power on fuel pump fuse #11.
I found problem by checking power wire from battery.
Small black wire on positive post that going under hood on the side of main cable was corroded and not given power to main and fuel relays.
I simply connect small wire to mean cable under the hood, and I have power for both relay.
✌
Hey bud, I recently pulled the motor on my 1986 325. When I put the motor back in it wants to crank with no fire. The relays are getting power along with the fuel pump but the injectors are not. Just wondering if you have any guesses except CPS
Hey did you ever figure this out same issue
I got '2' e28 and '3' e30,,
I recently bought a e30 325e, and it starts and runs but has a rough idle. There was bad fuel in it but I cleaned it a little. Today it would start but then when I hit the gas it stopped working. Any advice?
Make sure you positive terminal is fully connected, clean out the icv(idle control valve)
check for vacuum leaks, also as mentioned maybe clean out your icv and it doesnt hurt to spray a little wd40 into it.
I have a problem with my 325e 86 it only starts accelerating at half or full throttle if I stop accelerating it turns off install a new fuel pump from the tank and the fuel pump from the outside new fuel filter clean inyectors. check everything in your video but I can't get it to stay on without accelerating could you help me
The crankshaft and camshaft sensors check connections if I disconnect them they do not turn on when I connect them they turn on again
@@CARSTUDIOYT I replaced both the fuel pump relay and the mce relay. I forgot to mention that. I haven't checked the timing or changed plugs or wires.
I need your help bro.......
We are facing the same problem with E34 m20b23.........
sorry for the delayed response, if you followed everything in this video and are getting fuel and spark then you should check your compression. If you followed all of these steps and still not getting fuel or spark then I would check the ignition switch, wiring, and ecu.
@@CARSTUDIOYT okay..
Please can u give me any contact that I can use to reach you.......
Great information
Is there a phone number to speak with you in person regarding my project.
Engine hasn't been running in 15 years.
CARSTUDIOYT@gmail.com thank you! send me an email with any questions and your contact info in case if it cant be resolved through email.
Id also see if it will run with starting fluid so you can narrow it down to a fuel/injector issue.
well the car is run when i pinched the return line , is that possible my fuel pump dont put enough pressure? because the car only have 29 PSI , ACCORDING TO YOU 40 UP TO 50 PSI@@CARSTUDIOYT
ii spray with starting fluid the car start, do you think the injectors problem? and again if the injector problem why the car start if i pinced the return line? thank you for your time to teply my message i relally appreciated..@@CARSTUDIOYT
what is C101 CONNECTOR? IS THAT SOMETHING TO DO WITH FUEL SYSTEM? @@CARSTUDIOYT
It still has awful idle when I press the gas turns off I’m thinking it’s maf on 100
Thats great you got it running, have you figured out why its dying? I would start at fuel pressure. Could be a bad high pressure pump.
My E30 suddenly lost power under fuse 11 😳
I replaced both relays coil, cap, rotor
I tried the jump wire the fuel pump kicks on but when I turn the key over the fuel pump shuts off while using the jump wire
You may have a cps issue, I would run 2 jumper wires straight from the battery to the fuel pump and then try to start it and if it starts you may have a wiring issue. If it still doesnt, I would replace the cps with an oem one.
@@CARSTUDIOYT thanks man I will definitely try that
It’s a wiring issue! Thank you for the tip man I really appreciate it !! Keep up the good work
So are there two CPS connectors or one? There are two connections and I only ordered one…🤦♂️
Nothing, it just wont start. Do you have spark?
@@CARSTUDIOYT thought I did. Had to sideline this project to work on others. Today I put the battery on a trickle charger. Tomorrow I will check spark. At one point it acted like it was going to start for about a second. Then nothing. Cranks fine and we definitely have fuel.
@@djc6394 check your timing marks on your timing belt also. You can inspect cap and rotor button at the same time.
Please help.
It starts when I turn the key and have the jumper wire connected. But the air flow sensor immediately comes on when I connector the wire, then turn key and it fires right up. Also thank you for the fast response.
No problem, you need to check your main relay and all fuses
After researching this non stop for 3 days
Mine was missing and fuel canister had a hole in it haha
Mines doesn’t start has no spark out of the coil it’s getting power but no spark coming out got the far of a friends family
If you have power to the coil but no spark then i would definitely assume the coil is bad. You can buy a new one from an auto parts store for a very reasonable price.
@@CARSTUDIOYT I bought already a new coil and still no spark coming out of it
Ooo man i got true all this problems.. Miss fire 1.3.5.. Test by test..change head gasket..still missfire... ......and bingo ..OC2 SENSOR..56 BUCKS..
I fill like shit after all.....
Where is the crank position sensor on a 82 633csi
theres 2, one for position and one for speed. Both are located in the bellhousing.
@@CARSTUDIOYT thank you so much
E30 325i don't want to start
What to checkout if it is only 2.9V power on fuel pump relay?
