- Watch Jason Robert Brown lead the rehearsal band in a rousing rendition of the new musical's impressive kickoff.
Manhattan Theatre Club's Prince of Broadway, a musical celebration that highlights the extraordinary six-decade career of director and producer Harold Prince, is now in rehearsals in advance of an August 24 opening. As the cast and crew get ready for their first performance, they invited the press for a special sneak preview. Watch as musical supervisor (and three-time Tony winner) Jason Robert Brown leads the band in a rendition of the show's overture - and see if you can identify all 19 songs represented.
The way Phantom of The Opera went into the Ballad of Sweeney Todd then into Maria was truly impeccable
i came here to say this.
My guess
1. Sing Sing Sing
2. Tradition (Fiddler on the Roof)
3. Wilkommen (Cabaret)
4. Cool (West Side Story)
5. The Blob (Merrily We Roll Along)
6. Broadway Baby (Follies)
7. Music of the Night (phantom of the opera)
8. Being Alive (Company)
9. Cabaret
10. A Quiet Thing (Flora The Red Devil)
11. Hey There (The Pajama Game)
12. If I Was A Rich Man (Fiddler on the Roof)
13. The Phantom of the Opera
14. Ballad of Sweeney Todd (Sweeney Todd)
15. Maria (West Side Story)
16. Don't Cry For Me Argentina (Evita)
17. I've Got It All (On The Twentieth Century)
18. She Loves Me (She Loves Me)
19. Life Is (Zorba)
Fiddler, Wilkommen, Music of the Night, Being Alive, Cabaret, Phantom, Sweeney Todd, Maria, Don't Cry for Me Argentina, She Loves Me. That's all I could get!
I can hear songs from Fiddler on the Roof, Merrily We Roll Along, Phantom of the Opera, Company, Follies, Sweeney Todd, West Side Story, Evita and She Loves Me... even though I recognize some of the other shows listed I can't catch them in the overture.
I am so excited for this.
I don't think anybody has identified the beautiful ballad 'A Quiet Thing' from "Flora the Red Menace", Liza Minneli's Tony-winning Broadway debut in '65.
I did!
I had to sing that so I did
Sing, Sing, Sing; Tradition; Music of the Night; Being Alive; Phantom of the Opera; Maria; Don't Cry for Me Argentina; She Loves Me; Buenos Aires; a song from West Side Story (need to listen to the songs to figure out the song name); there's a song that I'm pretty sure Tony and the Japanese lady performed in Japan for this show but don't know the name; then there's a couple tunes I've heard before but never learned the names of those songs; methinks I need to go through every single musical that prince directed and figure out all songs for this challenge
after Tradition is Willkommen and Broadway Baby.
Music of the night, phantom of the opera, Maria, don't cry for me Argentina...that's pretty much what I got but it was all amazing!
All of these and also Pajama Game
Here are the ones I can get:
1. Prologue (Fiddler on the Roof)
2. Wilkommen (Cabaret)
3. Broadway Baby (Follies)
4. Music of the Night (Phantom of the Opera)
5. Being Alive (Company)
6. Cabaret (Cabaret)
7. Hey There (The Pajama Game)
8. Phantom of the Opera (Phantom of the Opera)
9. The Ballad of Sweeney Todd (Sweeney Todd)
10. Maria (West Side Story)
11. Don't Cry for Me Argentina (Evita)
12. The Dreidel Song (traditional)?
13. She Loves Me (She Loves Me)
14. Overture (Chicago)?
That leaves 5 more I couldn't place (and I'm not at all positive about 12 and 14). There were definitely a couple of tunes there I don't think I'd ever heard before (or at least couldn't attach a name to).
You're forgetting Cool from West Side Story in between Wilkommen and Broadway Baby.

I feel so close, yet so far. The ones I can't think of are literally on the tip of my tongue!
Broadway baby from follies!!!!
I think I detected a line from "Merrily We Roll Along" at 0:09.
I think the tune that was blended in with "Hey There" from the Pajama Game was "A Quiet Thing" from Flora the Red Menace.
This section of the playbill for this show lists all the song segments used in this overture:

What is the one right after Cabaret?? At about 0:45
i heard music of the night and idk any of the others
the very first one the drummer is playing sing sing sing
No, it’s not. It’s called, “the drummer just jamming on the drums to a jazzy made-up rhythm.“ Sing Sing Sing was written by Louis Prima in 1936, made famous by Benny Goodman, and was not from a Broadway musical.
It's not altogether fair that JRB is not my boyfriend.
