I’m absolutely shook at some of the ratings. Sometimes you take into account qually, sometimes you don’t. Sometimes you give a 5 for someone who didn’t even finish 1 lap but someone who did 61/62 gets a 1. I know it means nothing but Tommy was all over the place today. Usually I agree with the ratings. Madness. 😂😂😂

Can you give an example when they gave 5 to someone who crashed in the first lap? They give 5 for someone who didnt finish 1 lap because it wasnt their fault they didnt finish a lap so they cant judge their race so they give the average score. For example last year Leclerc crashed in France and they both gave him an F which is 1-2/10. I would say Tommy is consistent at least. But i agree that sometimes they dont consider quali.
Completely agree with you. I honestly was thinking 7 for Russell (8 if he didn't crash), great qualifying, hell of a race, possibly quickest car out there that day through most of it. Just that error pushing too hard, and yes it cost him all his points but it's not that big of a deal if you look at where the standings are. I'd rather see what they're made of for the rest of this season and play it safer maybe smarter next year when it all starts over again. 1 felt pretty biased

I don't understand how Tommy could only give Oscar a 7 then give Pierre an 8
because their rating is extremely arbitrary and heavily influenced by their opinion on how strong the car is.
Oscar teammate is in p7 they were generous towards Oscar.

I think Piastri and Gasly deserve the same grade.
This Sainz win is such a feel good F1 moment. I felt the same when Gasly won in Monza.
Piastri's race was one of those where he did extremely well, but did it so quietly that no one noticed. Including Tommy. Quali, he put up a good first lap; P7 at the time. Yes, the second lap was mediocre, but Stroll meant he didn't get a third lap. And in-race he did everything he could to gain positions without ruining the strategy that gained him 9 positions. I don't think one mediocre lap and being unable to pass Gasly at Singapore without ruining his tires deserves a drop from 10 to 7.
And Carlos, tbh, race of the year. It's one thing for a Red Bull to break free and take off. It's another to win in the third fastest car by packing up the whole field, then bolting with Norris at the pitstop, only to use him as a shield on the last 4 laps. Managing the people behind you while managing your tires while running around Singapore while managing your team...absolutely the most deserved win of the year.
The fact Tom gave Russell a 1, and Perez a 5 is just outrageous.
Russel got 0 points in a car that was capable of winning. Perez got points in the 4th best car

@@justinwalpole8956 also with a little bit more luck, or not having totally bungled quali Max would have won that race. His Pace on his last stint was monster. The RB wasn't the 4th best car out there, Max made a rare fuck up in qualifying and Checo just did what he has been doing all season and performed incredibly mediocre.
I am broadly ok with a 1 for George its harsh but he DNFed himself. Checo getting a 5 though is just absolutely outrageous, As is Esitban getting a 9 for DNFing himself.
@@dr2165 oh stfu Max didnt have a broken wing and he wasnt doing lift and cost and he literally didnt fight like Perez did, Perez asked the team to box 2 laps before he was overtook by Alonso, Gasly, Ocon and Piastri, you know why RedBull didnt pit him? because they wanted Perez to make the gap for Max, he made the 10 seconds gap fighting while Max literally let Lando, Charles and Lewis pass. And Max wouldnt won, the first stint was horrible for RedBull a,d Mercedes was literally the fastest at the end

Not a Max fan but I think it was his best drive of the season. That RB wasn’t good, no front end, and somehow managed P5 after two horrible safety car timing shots? Amazing. With him and Lewis clearly the two fastest cars at the end you can understand the difference between championship drivers and the pack.
He showed that you don't become WDC on accident. The way he closed that gap up to Charles was frightening. 1 -lap- corner more and he'd have passed him. I just wish they didn't get screwed over with the VSC.

@@mcgoo721 he wasn't really, Max massively benefited from the fact the sainz was purposely slowing the pace of the race for the the first stint which meant he and all the cars behind were much closer than they would normally be in a normal race. he also should have had a couple of penalties for qual. the second safety car did not actually cost him that much as if he had stayed out longer, the few extra laps he would have lost a lot of time as the tires were done and so the overall benefit would not be huge.
Suggestion for Matt's golden 10/10 system:
At the end of the season, Matt and Tommy get 1 'gold buzzer' each, so that they can award to the best drive of the year. It can be worth 1 or 2 extra points or whatever arbitrary score you might suggest.
It's not much, especially if you guys were not planning to tally up the points and calculate an average score.
But I think a drive like Sainz's deserve a recognition in some other form than just a regular 10/10.
Or you can give an 11/10 for an outstanding result, ie a non red bull win. For example if Albon finished 6th in a race then he’s going to get a 10, but if he gets a podium he should allowed to get higher
@@dpot2231 To me, allowing to go 11/10 is going to end up in a ratings 'inflation' of sorts, get what I mean?
If you are free to give out unlimited number of 11/10s, there will be other times in the future when you think "Oh, ___ deserves more than a 10/10." Then everybody can get an 11, and it's going to go into a vicious cycle of 12, 13, 20 out of 10 and so on.
Plus, giving 11/10 only for non RB wins is kind of discriminating against them. Who knows, there may be times when Max really earned it for an amazing masterclass drive.
Or maybe only 1. 11/10 rating per race.
Or make the scoring system out of 11 lol
they should just learn how to properly rate. 10's shouldnt be given out every week.

That 1 for Russell may be the harshest rating I've ever seen... P2 in quali and on for a podium for 99% of the race, no way you can say that's worse than the entire rest of the grid even with the shunt
He got 0 points in a car that was capable of winning. The only thing that matters in f1 is points, he made a huge error, which meant he got no points.
I agree 100%. There's no real logic behind this. He was arguably the second fastest overall driver of the weekend. Made one mistake with bad timing. That's not a rating of a 1 at all.

I really don’t understand a 7 for oscar. I’m not sure what you could’ve expected from him, after having to abort his lap due to the crash in Q1. Can’t qualify well if you weren’t given the opportunity to qualify.
Also to still make up 10 positions in the race is nothing short of spectacular and fully deserved at least an 8/10
if piastri got a 7 lawson should get an 8, the bias is crazy, he is a rookie too. Lawson wouldnt have been in q3 if verstappen hadnt impeaded tsunoda and if he had finished the race their ratings would have been different. Lawson has been impressive but tom rating piastri 7 is stupid
He inherited a lot of those positions though, it's not like he made 10 overtakes. Don't get me wrong he did well and I could see an 8 but 7 is also fairly on the money for me.
One thing y’all have forgotten is Mercedes were the only one that had saved a medium through practice and GR spoke about it during his interview after qualifying

Absolutely agree. Singapore rookie. Screwed in qualifying when Stroll bins in in front of him. None of the upgrades Norris had. 17th to 7th on a track not conducive to going forward. Inherent British bias again. When will these guys realise that Norris is just the first of many that Oscar will overcome on his way to the top. Generational talent. And Lawson gets a 10 for pottering around behind him after starting well in front of him????

The bias is real. There’s no consistency when you account for the events of the race and qualifying. Something makes me think Tommy didn’t watch this race closely since Verstappen didn’t win.

how does crashing in last lap gets u good rating?
Leclerc was nursing a cooling issue since like before the VSC. He really couldn't do more. He wanted to pit during VSC, but the team read the telemetry and knew the car would break way before the end.
I really wouldn't hold this race against Charles. Imagine the scenes if he got pole and his car broke down 4 turns before the end.
Charles asked to pit during the VSC and he was turned down straight away, otherwise he would've been in the final battle

@francesco153 not as much as he lost on old tires lol, there was an adequate gap that he wouldn't have been hampered too much and with his pace on the fresh tires he would've caught up quickly

I actually think it's one of the best drives of the season of Verstappen. Overtaking 2 cars while on the hard tyre. Then after getting the medium, overtaking 6 cars in just 14 laps. He did everything with ease that Russell couldn't do in many rounds.
Yeah, Max drive was every bit as good as Sainz victory. These ratings are dumb anyhow, far too much emphasis on end results while factoring out external factors.

Because his car bottomed out like crazy during braking, and having no rear grip at all, due to to bad setup choice by his engineers. Qualifying 11th with a car with such bad drivability only outlines the quality of Max performance. Is it that hard to just watch and objectively see what happens in a raceweekend, and not only being biased because you do not like a driver and therefore neglecting all circumstances.@@066kshitizvsingh4
Oscar gained 10 positions and gets a 7 from Tom can't understand this one
Going from 11th to 2nd and then 15th to 5th, Max must have set an F1 record on that track for most passes by a driver in a single race. Don't get points for that, but did get 10 points out of the race and another story to add the legend.
To be fair that 11th to 2nd was during a bunch of pitstops, so he didn't actually have that many overtakes. His stint after the second pitstop was legendary, though.
Leclerc actually cost George and Lewis 2 seconds, which given their pace differnce meant they had one less lap to overtake Carlando.
9 and 7 out of 10 for Piastri making up 10 places at Singapore after being screwed in quali.... 10 out of 10 for Lawson. Please do explain? Both Rookies... Are your expectations just so high for Oscar that if he doesn't beat lando in a car without upgrades it's just not good enough? I'm not sure what more he could have done to be honest.
It's the third race for Lawson. I'm sure if Oscar did what Lawson did here in his 3rd race he would've got a 10 too.

@@smokeybandit9760 I agree that It can be fairly easy to miss something, but keep in mind that they’re rating a driver and they have a public that acknowledges their opinions and will probably follow suit on their opinions. It’s precisely bc of that, they shouldn’t miss anything. It’s not like they’re out of time and need to put out videos right away. They have all the time in the world to rewatch the key moments during the race. If they’re rating them, they should at least know what said driver’s race looked like.

Harsh on Oscar Tommy! in a non upgraded car lacking downforce, on a track hard to pass, He made 10 positions by being patient and driving it like its a Formula 1 Grand Prix. Worthy of a 9 minimum.
His first lap in q1 was 6 tenths slower than his teammate. He had a large roll in being out in Q1.
1 for Russel is WILD. He did one mistake, one. And it was a normal one to do, following the car you're trying desperately to catch. To beat Hamilton, almost hit pole, run a flawless race and strategy and hit the wall as the car ahead of you only to get a 1 is crazy, even 4 is imo. You'd think he was running on a redbull, missed q2 and crashed when he had a chance at a result or something.. Oh wait, that was Perez before and I don't even know if he got a 1 then lmao.

A HUGEEEE mistake that is worth a 1/10. You don't crash in the last lap when u are in 3rd position. Rooky mistake, but he is not a rooky anymore.

It was pure sloppiness. Sure there's the latifis strolls and Sargents that make it to F1, but to be the cream of the crop you don't just drive into a wall randomly and throw away a podium on the last lap..

Driving to the pace of your car is the expectation not the cherry on top. He did well, he didn't do anything exceptional. A lot of his +10 positions were inherited through other's misfortune and having a clean race himself. Everybody he overtook you'd really expect him to be able to overtake. He did well, 7 is a good score. He didn't blow Tommy's socks off, get over it.
Alonso had damage to the car from the start of the race. The pit entry error was because the car couldn't turn.
Maybe, maybe not (for the cause of the error) and maybe his suspension was functioning but an important element broke that ruined aero efficiency. More drag, less downforce, the car was just bad. The second mistake, well I believe that was mostly because of that issue also I think he had enough. I mean the team totally ruined the pit stop, he tried what's possible. I think a 2 and a 3 are very harsh. It wasn't his best but also he couldn't do much. The car was trash.
Alonso fangirls are coming with their excuses.
The highs of the start of the season to the lows of now. I like to think things would be better if Fernando didn't have to carry the team on his back.

You're most likely right, but still, even if this was not 100% his fault but the car, this was one of the worst races he has had. Probably the worst since his return.
I'm not understanding the hype around Lawson finishing 9 when you have Russell/Ocon DNFs, Stroll DNS, and Alonso stinking it in last place after mistakes. Even if you assume he beats Yuki, that would be a P13 under normal circumstances, which is about where the car ought to be. Good on him for taking the car safely to the checkered flag and being in a position to capitalize on the mistakes of others, but I don't view finishing ahead of Williams, Haas, and Alfa as indicators of mega pace.

Agreed. He was consistently 3-4 tenth slower than Yuki in each session. Not bad for a first timer there but probably not a 10/10.
Because Lawson is a sub…a fill-in. This was his third ever race. He’s not even a rookie and he managed to get those points and was the man to knock out Verstappen in Q2…that’s why.

Interesting how you rate Alonso so low when he did most of the race with damage to his front left suspension, likely from Tsunoda debris. He had to steer slightly right on the straights to keep the car going directly forwards (Which even the commentary on sky noticed)
Is such damage taken into account in the grading? Because right now I'd say he's deserves better for even finishing instead of having the car retired.
Right sometimes it's not all winning, it's about your fighting spirit and personality on track, I love her didn't retired and kept going
Albon goes from 14 to 11th, gets an 8 from Tommy, Oscar goes from 17th to 7th and gets only 7 points
Context, Albon in a much worse car would’ve gotten 8th if Pérez didn’t punt him

when they talked about fernando i disagree, they didnt even see the twitters, they just rate by feelings by only watchin the race. Well if you had seen the aston twitter youwould know that fernando had a broken suspension since lap 2 and the pitstop of 30secs was a team error, I would have given him a 5 out of 10, cause his qualy was also decent
Yuki's unluckiness has been so frustrating this 2nd half.
Yeah and also that means it's very hard to compare him to Liam Lawson. Not saying Lawson isn't impressive. He's doing a perfect job so far! Deserves all the praise but Yuki is so unlucky.
The safe thing here is that he will mostly race for AT or whatever it's gonna be called next year. Deserves to have a ride in the Red Bull soon tho.
It wasn't all luck here, he messed up his second run in Q2 which is the run that is important.
And in the crash with Perez he wasn't faultless, You can watch Perez's onboard, he should've gave Perez more space.
As a Yuki fan, the frustration of his bad luck is too sad, here's hoping his home race will bring some glimmer of hope~

I'm not even a George Russell fan, but a ONE out of ten!? Steady on! Amazing in qualifying and blistering in the race right until the (untimely) end. Matt's 4/10 is far more reasonable

Qualifying doesn't get you points and doesn't win championships, Lewis was better in the race, and he stupidly put his car in the wall (again) through no fault but his own. He tanked at worst a 3rd place in a race he should have won. Further, no one was "blistering" in the race, at least for most of it. The only time they actually pushed was in the last dozen or so laps. And once he was pushing, he crashed himself out.
Was completely fair. The point of racing is to win or get points and he got neither from his own mistake.
Ok it was a rookie mistake, but I'm with you on this. This verdict is far too harsh.

Holy, Tommy's been smoking something strong this weekend. 1/10 weekend for Russel which is insanely harsh, 7/10 for Piastri which is also completely deluded. And then gives Perez a 5/10 for messing up qualifying, killing 2 other drivers in the race and then still finished 30 seconds behind Verstappen. Sort it out for next week as that was hard to listen to. Opinions are opinions but let's not base them on 5% of the facts.
Russel got 0 points in a car that was capable of winning. That's a horrendous perfomance. It doesn't matter that he was fast, the only thing that matters is the points you take home.
Oscar was 6 tenths slower than his teammate in the first run in Q1, so he had a large role in going out in Q1.
@@justinwalpole8956 1. That is not the entire basis of these grades. If we're just to grade performance relative to car performance then the show may as well not exist.
2. Piastri in a car without upgrades that Lando has. He was going to make Q2 but got screwed by Stroll. Things are sometimes out of your control and yes, his initial lap could have been better but in ordinary circumstances, his qualifying performance would have put him through. The same way that Albon deserves an 8 because he was punted off track should be applied here.

The good things he did ended up not mattering. The bad things he did lost him and his team points and a possible race win. That’s a 1/10
So tired of these overrated Albons ratings, this Williams car is decent. 2-3 for Alonso is a joke as well, bro was driving since lap 2 with damaged suspension
If we presume that generally, even with the upgrades, the Williams is usually slower than the Mercs, Red Bulls, Astons, Ferraris and McLarens, then 11th should be where the car is aiming to finish and he got 11th despite multiple set backs (not of his own doing) through the weekend.

Another miss is the fact that Charles also had an overheating issue with the engine the last 1/4 of the race, and they didn't have a fresh set of mediums to put him on anyway. Both of these have been overlooked. Most everything that happened to Charles on Sunday was not of his doing...hes just always the fall guy.
Leclerc has had some ungodly bad luck this year.
Aston Martin confirms that Alonso had damage on his left suspension cover since lap 2. According to AMUS, Alonso's damage to the car has cost him downforce and drag has increased. Just to mention it if u didnt know about it

Alonso sustained damage to the suspensions on the second lap. That caused the car to have even less pace than it had this weekend, and also caused the pit lane error (which, btw, a 5 second penalty for that is an absolute joke. Checo had the same penalty after ending Albon's and Tsunoda's races)

there was no suspension damage. The aero case fell off. The suspension was fine. It would cause minimal drag and would not cause a front right lock up. F1 cars used to not all even use aero casings. They help they dont alter the car
5 second pitstop is fine. It's a matter of safety that you don't cross the line for any reason. If Aston wanted to protest that under the grounds of damage, they should have, if not then that's there problem, not the FIA.

Alonso drove with damage the entire race just around the suspension area on the left front. I'm pretty sure that's the reason he just couldn't turn in the pit lane, so it wasn't entirely his fault.
With Haas, it's always like: "Oh, they're actually in a pretty good position."
Then you don't pay attention for a couple of minutes, and they're dead last with 4 pit stops.

And Max getting an 8 shows you really forgot qualifying. Max could have easily got into Q3 if he didn't made that mistake himself. Even if the car was not that good on qualifying still they got knocked out by an alphatauri. And Perez also deserves to have even lower rating than that.
I could not agree more with the 9 of ten for Estaban Ocon. What an amazing drive. I felt more for him then George to be honest.
No one is talking about how that's two years in a row for an Ocon dnf at Singapore. The renault engine is just so trash. Unreliable mess of an engine for a decade.
Lawson seems to be the real deal. Just another prime example of F1 not having enough seats for all the TRULY talented drivers trying to make their way into the sport.

Fernando had a problem with his chassis on the second lap. He managed to drive to the end.
Clearly Max deserved more than an 8. Yet again a perfect race,after a disaster setup he had on Saturday, and with only ever so slighly more favourable circumstances could have won the race.
I was gonna give Max and 8 but you talked me into a 9.
Alonso had damage on his car since lap 2, there was a piece of the car that was stuck in the front suspension on the left. That altered the balance of his car which is probably why had a few mistakes and couldn't pass Perez for such a long time. It was a race to forget..

I would give Max a 9, he was very unlucky with the safety and virtual safety car, but at the end he was on Charles's tail who had started in third.
Max did 8 of the total 42 overtakes during the race.

BUT, Alphas Updates seem to have worked pretty well, at least in Singapore. He had a bad start, lost 2 position and would have lost 4 if Perez hadn't crashed Yuki. He rode the Perez DRS train as long as he could and even lost connection to that. He benefitted from every DNF, other than Bottas, and Alonso's bad stop and Perez shunting Albon that's 5 positions for free. And he didn't defend against any Overtakes. I don't know, maybe I'm too harsh.
All your points are valid.... but considering it's his second and a half weekend in that car it's impressive enough to warrant atleast an 8 maybe 9.....

Funnily enough they talked him up like it was still a 9 or 10. But I guess result matters, not just driver performance. Ah, guy cant get a 10 every race, think its fair to say there might have been more potential in qualifying, barely missed out on q3 after all.

@@caijones156 A 9/10 in quali is insane given Lawson out qualied him and he didnt make Q3 in the 5th or 4th best car. he should get a 6-7 for quali and a 9 for race so about a 7.5-8 rating is very fair. Bad luck during races always seems to hurt their ratings. Lec only got a 7 when he got screwed in the pits and then was told not to pit at the end for mediums to go on the attack. He only got a 7/10
@@John333Scout Leclerc was out-qualified by his teammate and his defense against the Mercs when it was really needed was nothing special. So it definitely makes sense to give Max a higher rating overall.

How many overtakes did he actually make and who did he actually have to overtake? Also with out upgrades does not mean slow, just means slower than Lando.
Man, if that VSC came one lap earlier and Max won, I would have absolutely lost it. It would have been the best ever performance.
Also, if George hadn't crashed at the end, Max most likely would have overtaken Charles. But now they had to slow down in sector 2 of the last lap. Max was only a few tenths behind at the end of sector 1.
If they didn't make a mistake with the floor height and basicly wasted the FP1&2 Max could have won this race and wouldn't be out Q2.
It's obviously a question as to whether the other drivers would've gotten a pit stop gap on Max without the safety car, but it was a great drive from max to almost get P4 despite everything going wrong with the car and 2 bad SCs
ALO had aero damage holding him back, 2-3 seems harsh.
ALONSO HAD FRONT SUSPENSION DAMAGE !! asgon confirmed damage that increased their drag and slowed them down. Apparently it happened on lap 2 under braking something broke and that's why he was failling behind and couldn't turn the car well.
I thought Georges rating was a little too harsh, giving the fact he gave it a go. The Mercedes duo made that race more exciting in my opinion, which gave Sainz and Norris a headache in the latter stages. George, despite his crash had one of his better weekends. Would of rating him a 7, to be fair. If a Championship was to play for, than I would of played it safe and kept the points. It was a gamble that did not pay off. Both your scores were too low IMHO.
There sure was a scenario where Max fought for that win. A later SC, after the leaders had stopped, would have been...tasty. Good luck overtaking Max when everyone smells blood in their DRS trains.

I usually agree with these guys’ ratings, but giving George Russell a 1/10 is just ridiculous. Fernando Alonso had an awful, awful weekend. Several rookie-level mistakes dragged him to the back of the grid for a completely underwhelming, zero-points finish. Tom gave Alonso a 3/10, which I don’t disagree with. It was a bad weekend. Russell absolutely gave it his all; he had an incredible qualifying which placed him second on the grid, and up until his crash, had an absolutely fantastic race where he was one of, if not the, quickest driver on the grid. Yet a tiny lapse in concentration gives him a 1/10? Tom’s only reasoning was that Russell was in a car which should have scored points, and he didn’t, and it’s that simple. If that’s the case, why did Alonso, who failed to get points not because of a momentary and incredibly unfortunate lapse in judgement, but because of repeated errors and overall shoddy driving, get triple Russell’s score? Especially considering Alonso is a driver in a car which is on a similar level to the Mercedes this season, and has FAR more experience than Russell. Lance Stroll got a 0/10 for crashing out on a bad qualifying lap. You’re telling me George Russell, a driver who placed incredibly in qualifying and had a world-class drive up until the very last lap, only gets 1 point higher than a driver who didn’t even start the race?
George Russell was a 10, regardless of the crash. He was ready to risk it for the win. He was the fastest out there.
He wasn’t the fastest. Race data shows Lewis actually had the quickest race pace.
He also didn’t risk it, he made a mistake. There’s a huge difference.
If he’d have gone for a move and lost it, fair play. But the opportunity didn’t present itself/he didn’t create an opportunity.

7 for Oscar is also wild, track evolution in quali was huge, you needed to run a second lap to have a chance at advancing and Stroll took that away from him. And yet, with the slower car than Lando he still managed to gain 10 positions in a hard to overtake course.

Lewis "that chicane means nothing to me" Hamiton blew straight through his like 6th chicane of the last couple years and didnt even try to brake, avoid or file back in line.
@DavidCruz-dv2ot it became commonplace with him and max, when they decided they didnt want to crash. But he pulled it on Alonso at spa and flew up it the air, plus other times. He knows hes going to get penalized, I think having a really fast car before and not worrying about a 5 second penalty had something to do with it.

Sainz was great, but George was stellar too. P2 with the mercedes on saturday, absolutely crushing Lewis (4 tenths). Drove a great race and would have scored a 10 without the crash. He deserves at least a 7 in my opinion. And Max had a good race also but was very unlucky.
A 1 is way too low but a 7 is way too high. You can't give a driver a 7 when they DNFd by their own fault, regardless of how good their race would've been otherwise. He should've gotten a 3 - 5.

A 1 and a 4 for George, who was HEROIC in quali, drove a great 62 laps of the race with a valiant (albeit possibly slightly overdriven to the detriment of his tyres) charge on Norris and Sainz, and crashed out on a minor mistake on a tricky track whilst TRYING TO WIN is just... Why the George hate? There's a lot of it around and long has been, and I don't know where it's come from. I don't know why.

Fun facts: Lawson had been the only one to overtake Verstappen this season (unlapping himself), he knocked him out of Q3 and Lawson was the only one who defended against Verstappen, ultimately costing Max P4 by 0,2 sec.
