I was walking along the Strand a few months ago, St Clemence the Dane church was playing Oranges and lemons from the bells. I found it very moving to hear it.
Very interesting. Thank you. I was singing this to my children who are 4 and 5(and born and bred in London) and was shocked to discover they didn't know it. I used to play the game in the playground.
i remember this as a child it gave me nightmares wtaf was they brain washing us with he comes a candle to light you to bed AND HERE COMES A CHOPPER TO CHOP OFF YOUR HEAD WTAF SERIOUSLY

So you better come in off the street before the bogey man gets you !
my mother also used to tell us and scare us with another bogeyman called dragfoot apparently he really did exist he was an executioner that would do the same to children without any remorse
"Oranges and lemons!" Said the bells of saint Clements. "You owe me five farthings." Said the bells of saint Martins. "And when will you pay me?" Said the bells of Old Bailey. "When I am rich!!" Said the bells of Shoreditch. "And when will that be?" Said the bells of Mary. "Oh, I do not know!" Said the Great Bell of Bo! ding dong! Ding dong! Ding dong! "Oh I do not know!" Said the Great Bell of Bo!!!
Sad that this kind of knowledge is just being eroded and lost. It's documented, sure. But no London child knows this tune anymore, they know the tune to the McDonald's ads and dances from TikTok.
