That colonel sounded like he had less balls than the men he was leading. You'd think that, having a reputation of harsh discipline and order, the officer could have organized for those conscripts to be beaten within an inch of their life. The Nazis would have done so to _their_ conscripts. But nah - all the fools in charge there are cowardly weasels.

I understand its hard, but freedom cost with a price...west paid it awhile ago. This moment with the Kursk was when Russia began its current descent. My issue with that is that they fought for 3 and a half months and the reason they are standing up now is due to how they are being treated personally.... Not because they had an issue with the war itself.
The issue was they were lied to. They were entitled to time off and were tricked and sent back to fight. This is why they stood up. Not because of the war itself. They'd already served their time.
I doesn't seem they had any issues with the war or what they were doing... at least not any issues that reached an issue that made them decide that they wouldn't participate. It's purely their own self interest at play here not any moral issue regarding what they were partaking in.

You don't know what they understood or did in their first 3 months of service to Russia in the war. Many Russian soldiers were tricked believing they were on a training exercise and then found themselves in Ukraine in a hot war that not even their commanders expected. There are stories during that period of soldiers refusing to fight and being shot for that and others handing in their papers being taken away and then put back on the front line and having to fight or die. So don't be so quick to dismiss what you don't know. This might have been what they thought was their first legitimate opportunity to get out of the fight only to be betrayed again by their country.
