Great job Todd. I remember racing against you in OTH and Big Bear/Kenda Cup in SoCal several years ago. I've gotten slower and you've gotten insanely better since.
Haha, glad you liked it. Last year before I went to Unbound I scoured UA-cam looking for videos of the course. Binge watching before I went to the race.

Lol, that's so funny! I wish I could have captured you smashing it up a hill. It's crazy that I remember so many of the riders in this video. Some I see at the very beginning and then at the very end. How we can be so close over 200 miles. Looking forward to another 200 this year.
wow, awesome video! (and awesome time!!) def gonna put this on while on the trainer next time. I should bring the gopro next year, missed the sun by a little but made the midnight club. gonna try again I think.
Hey Todd, Thanks for this video. Very informative. Did you train mostly on gravel or pavement? I’d like to get in for 2023 but am hesitant because I have to travel for decent gravel, I’m in Philadelphia. Pavement is easy for me to train on. Just curious. Thanks, Jim
Thanks Jim! I would say I trained mostly on the road bike. I do have dirt roads close to home, but they involve quite a bit of climbing. So, most of my really long rides were mostly on tarmac. Unbound doesn’t require any technical skills mostly. Long straight roads for the most part. I would do a lot of long rides on your gravel bike though, road or gravel, just to make sure you’re comfortable for all those hours in the saddle. Hopefully you get in, definitely worth the trip!
hi todd, this looks like a good test of stamina, and thankyou for sharing the `fun` i`m curious about the average speed over the course ,or do you even bother to record stats for this event ? 😎👍
Thank you William, I do ride with a Garmin and record all the data from the ride. My average speed over the 200 miles was 16 mph. I made 2 pit stops that both took about 3 minutes each. There was also 2 muddy sections about a mile or 2 long that required some hiking. Otherwise on the gas for over 12 hours.
@@thunsak06 thanks todd, thats a fine pace in those conditions, chapau! i`m just watching the last half hour now, and the muddy sections, i`ve had a few miles in the saddle over a lifetime so i sincerely appreciate the effort you put in ,i`ve competed in track cyclocross timetrials road racing and uncountable training miles at amateur/club level here in old blighty, there`s nothing to compare with it for all round fitness,👍😊
Thanks hrtenk15. I was originally going to run IRC boken plus in 42's. But with the rain and mud I had to scramble to find a smaller tire for clearance. I ended up running the Panaracer Gravel King semi slick in a 38. Still didn't have enough clearance. But the tire did hold up to the Flint rock.
@@thunsak06 thanks Todd. I’m lucky to get in for the unbound gravel 200 this year and in the hunt for a good tires that can tackle the flint hills. It will be my 1st unbound.
I’m looking for a good entry level gravel bike now (Everybody is, right??). I’m a roadie, selling my MTB stuff. Suggestions? Looking at the Trek Checkpoint ALR 6 at the moment. Seems to be a good bang for the buck. Don’t want to beat up a carbon frame on gravel just yet. In Florida so quite flat here.
Kevin, there are so many good bikes out there, Trek is one as well. I have a Specialized Diverge myself. The one thing I would recommend is a bike with enough tire clearance. My Diverge only fits 42 tires max. Went with 38’s @ Unbound and had issues with mud. I would pick a bike that would fit 47 tires so you have the comfort with the big tires but can go smaller when you need the clearance for mud.
Thank you! This race I was on 38’s only because of the mud we experienced during the day. I would much prefer a larger tire volume for this event when it’s dry. 45mm or larger.
Thanks Kevin, Hero 10 mounted below my stem, had a cable going from the GoPro into a small frame bag into an external battery. I set the GoPro to shut off after 5 minutes. When I was testing it, I would always forget to turn it off and I could never remember if it was on or off. Lol . So I could just turn it on and go about my business without worry knowing it would shut itself off. I had plenty of battery life left at the end. I recorded an hour and 55 minutes. Probably could of recorded 3 or 4 hours.
@@thunsak06- I like that idea. I'm using a Hero 8 in front and a Hero 7 in back. I'm not sure if either of those are adapted for external power. I'll have a closer look. Yes, I know what you mean about not being sure if the camera is on or off at times. I love the sky in your video with the clouds. That always seems to look more interesting than a clear blue sky. Hi Bob, last year I was using scratch super fuel 85 grams per bottle. Scratch hydration in pack with about 20 grams per hour. Then using a mix of sis gels an a few solid energy bars. Only ate solids once every 3 hours just to help settle the tummy a bit. It takes time to train your gut to take on so much sugar for so long, but it’s necessary for these long events.
Thanks! I really ramped up my time on the bike in the 2 to 3 months before the race. The last month I was doing long 6+ hours rides back to back to back. 3 days in a row on weekends. Also, practicing fueling with 100 grams of carbs an hour takes some time to adapt to.
