  • These commercials aired on KPDX on October 29th, 1988
    1. "Freddy's Nightmares" Commercial Bumper
    2. TV Spot for "Child's Play" (Awesome movie that started a great franchise, but I sincerely doubt the authenticity of these testimonials, considering they were shot on film and feel rehearsed. It's also weird how common it was back then to have a horror movie come out the week AFTER Halloween)
    3. Creep Phone 1-900-909-CREEP (The footage here is taken from 1986's "Troll")
    4. Certs
    5. Schick Slim Twin Disposable Razors (With Larry Bird at the end)
    6. Levi's 501 Jeans
    7. "Freddy's Nightmares" Commercial Bumper
    8. Promo for "Stephen King's World Of Horror"
    9. 1-976-LIVE
    10. Sales Professionals
    11. Suzuki Sidekick
    12. Alka-Seltzer Plus Cold Medicine (4:15 Mike Holland looks like every bully from an 80's teen movie)
    13. TV Spot for "U2 Rattle And Hum"
    14. Suave
    15. Aziza Eye Art
    16. "Freddy's Nightmares" Commercial Bumper
    17. 1-976-DATE
    18. Northwest Legal Services
    19. Raisinets (Mmm Raisinets for lunch! Mom, you're the best!)
    20. Levi's 501 Jeans
    21. Creep Phone 1-900-909-CREEP ("Troll" is ranked very high on my list of films where Sonny Bono turns into a plant)
    22. Bob Kendall Chevrolet
    23. 1-976-8888
    24. Promo for "Halloween" (WRONG Michael Myers killed his older sister, not his babysitter! 2 points deducted!)
    25. Oxy Clean
    26. Vivarin (Or you know, just drink something that has caffeine in it)
    27. TV Spot for "They Live" (Awesome. And yet another movie perfect for Halloween that came out in November)
    28. Cub Foods
    29. John Rollins Carpet Place
    30. Promo for "Elm Street: A Halloween Nightmare"
    31. World Of Wheels Auto Show (Partial)

I grew up in Portland in the 80s and 90s and all these commercials are giving me flashbacks! 😁

That Child's Play commercial...What makes Chucky stand out from other slasher icons is that its creator, Don Mancini, has been with the series since the beginning, all the way up to the TV series that just started on the SyFy Channel over 30 years later. And while these audience reactions might be staged, I used to love it when movie commercials would do this.

Creep Phone- Nice to see that an infamous movie like "Troll" got some publicity in a medium like a commercial like that.

I am obsessed with the Child’s Play movies, especially this time of year! Happy that a promo for it made it in this compilation!

The best time of the year are these marathons!
The 80s were an awesome time for horror anthology series like Freddy's Nightmares but there were so many more!
The game Saints Row IV had a mission based on the events of They Live and it even had the likenesses and voices of Roddy Piper (RIP) and Keith David!

That dude in the 1-976-DATE commercial is in big, big trouble with his lady. Gotta admit it takes balls to call up a line like that *while* you're already seeing someone. Well, balls and absolutely no common sense.

I think the implication is that she’s appearing because he called the number, though this could have been expressed better.

  • @johnmadden5933

The pricing on the call lines says a lot about how long they expect you to stay connected.
The line about dating is 99 cents per minute so there's a lower initial cost but they expect you to be on the phone for longer yielding them a bigger return, meanwhile the creep phone is $2 for the first minute and 45 cents for each subsequent minute because they don't expect you to stay on that long. Which makes sense because I'm not sure what exactly you're supposed to talk about with a "ghoul" for any amount of time.
In fact I wouldn't be surprised if you were charged the $2 immediately upon calling and they're banking on just a lot of quick curiosity calls.

Freddy's Nightmares-loved the episodes they did which expanded somewhat on the NOES universe in general
Child's Play-felt bad for the people who were sitting in the row in front of the woman @0:12
Creep Phone-not a phone line for bad dates
    Levi's 501 Jeans-with Billy Baldwin
1-976-DATE-"Who are you calling?" "Umm,no one.."
They Live-"We've got one who can SEE...!"

Man the sheer domination of these "phone number" hotlines is creepy as hell. .45 - .90 cents a minute unchecked since your having a good time wrecks phone bills.

The FTC finally intervened after parents complained about the influx of Santa Claus 900 numbers around this time and later prohibited advertising lines of this sort to children. This probably would have effected things like "Creep Phone" too.
A 1992 ruling by the supreme court allowed a law passed by congress that effectively banned adult 900 numbers. So these numbers really only existed for a brief period in the late 80's/early 90's where they were ubiquitous on independent and cable TV, especially during late night programming.

@@80sCommercialVault I I know people chafe about regulations like this, but ultimately these lines were so insanely predatory that I feel it's justified.

    • @80sCommercialVault
      @80sCommercialVault  2 роки тому +3

In the case of the Santa Claus lines and various other phone lines targeted to children, they were absolutely exploiting kids who were not "asking for their parents permission"...and it was a nationwide phenomenon not limited to just a few states. IMO unfettered/unregulated capitalism is a pipe dream and almost always proven to be disastrous to society.

I'm now craving for a big bag of Raisinets
....and so many 1-976 telephone numbers but I do have a question - where these numbers a one time only as in the telephone numbers were only in servicr in the 80's?
