      @@WildBushGrit Appreciate it sir. I just had my son order the same reloader you have as an early Christmas present for me. :) Are there any other necessary items/tools you would recommend? Scales? Etc..

      Aha! I'll crack one open in your name, Thanks for the beer! Necessary no, but yes a scale is a great tool to have to evaluate the bushings precision, with the shots or powder you are using. Later you might wanna try to trim your shell, to improve crimping. But baby steps, try it as is, and adapt, we all have different experiences, and you'll know what works for you, and things to improve.

    I just started reloading and been getting the bits and bobs for a few weeks as non toxic shot is near impossible to find in my area of Florida. And if you can get it, it's about $35 a box! Using 12 gauge 2 3/4 #4 steel, the bushings have to be weighed on a scale as they are calibrated for lead and corresponding powder. Getting the Lyman's manual to find the load needed, found shot needs 1 1/8(use 1 5/8 bushing adds 2 grains over), powder is at largest bushing 189 gives 27.4 grains (needs 28.0). You are allowed 5% differences. I love my lee load all 2 as I can recycle the hulls and gives me something to do in the off season.

    I already reload .30-30 Win, .45-70 GOVT and .44 Remington Magnum, and I'm now really debating getting into shotgun reloading for 12 gauge. I'm really keen on using Flite Control wads, as they turned my cylinder bore shotgun into a tight patterning gun again. Not to mention I can assemble whatever ammunition I need, and it's a very relaxing hobby, great for rainy days and long winters. I was under the impression that slugs generally used a roll crimp instead of a star crimp, though. Might be worth looking more into.

      I reload for grouse, rabbit, and ducks. for grouse and rabbit. #7 or #7 1/2. For ducks, I use #3 when there are chances of geese but usually #4. I also do very mild loads for my son, he is 14, but light as a feather, so I want him to get comfortable and slowly increase his effective range. Slugs and Buckshot, I will usually get close to max, when I want to punish myself :) I'd love to cast my own someday.

    To quickly check your powder weight, tare a primed hull on your scale, and dump your powder normally into it, using the charge bar. Now your scale will accurately weigh what your shell receives. Consistency counts. You can make a full grain difference or more by simply tapping on the charge bar. I personally never use bushings, preferring to weigh the powder in every shell I make.

    • @WildBushGrit
      @WildBushGrit  3 роки тому +2

      I agree, the bushings are not super precise. Hence why I steer clear of near max charges. If I ever get near max, then I'll use the scale for every shell. But for most small games or plinking, bushings so far has been ok. :)

    That shell you loaded for your example is very slightly underfilled. This is what causes the concave crimp with the visible hole in the middle. If the hole is smaller than your shot, it may not make a difference, but if you're loading small shot such as #8 or #9 you may find the shot escapes through such a hole. You can adjust the column height by using a different wad, or by adding a small thickness of nitro card in the shot cup before dropping the shot. In your case, a 0.125" thick nitro card (sold as an over-powder wad) should be just right and give a tight crimp instead of the slightly concave you have. Another alternative is an over-shot wad (I just bought a bag of 3/4" diameter bingo chips for this). One or two of these on top of the shot will fill out the column height and, because they're thinner than nitro card, can make smaller adjustments.

    • @WildBushGrit
      @WildBushGrit  Рік тому +1

      Yes it is a bit. I do have a follow up video which exclusively focus on crimping. But you raised a good point. I will usually try hard to keep the column at the perfect height. Change the wad or adding cork or nitro below the wads, and I use Tyvek or overshot card on top of shots when I use buffer like my turkey load with buffer. But I reload mostly for Geese, BB & T.

    Oh, and by the way, if a friend says he reloads, and takes you out clay pigeon shooting, and then hands you a shot shell that’s marked with three X’s, and tells you “this is my super-magnum - I’ve given it a little extra powder,” please don’t put that in your gun and fire it. A “former” friend of mine in high school did that to me. Like an idiot, I trusted him and his reloading skills, so I shot that shell at a launched clay pigeon. Well, when I came to, I was laying on the ground, my head was spinning, my right shoulder hurt like hell, and my Remington Wingmaster 12 gauge lay about 10 feet behind me. When I’d finally collected myself a few minutes later, though dizzy, I stumbled over to my gun, picked it up, and the trigger group nearly fell out of the bottom of the receiver. The receiver had been expanded 1/8 inch on both sides of the trigger. I was lucky I wasn’t killed. I forced that so-called friend to replace my gun, which he did. He felt bad, but I’d received injuries that took away some of my hearing, and gave me a flinch whenever I shot a shotgun from that point on. It took me years to get rid of that flinch.

    1 problem here. You should push she’ll out of resizer and primer in at the same time. 1 quicker by saving one step. 2 if you get that 1 in a million primer that goes off when seating the ring will force the blast up instead of it coming out toward your face and chest.

    • @WildBushGrit
      @WildBushGrit  Рік тому

      The reason for that is to feel the primer going in, the resizer can hold the shell pretty hard, and when you apply pressure it can come off suddenly, and the shell hitting the primer. Not good. I had primer going off, (not with the lee load-all) a steady low pressure will not set them off. If a primer goes off the sizer will not redirect the blast up, there is a slit going away from you,(back of the lee) that's mainly where most of the blast will go. As you are applying pressure, the shell and the primer are already enclosed in the plastic receptacle, the sizer merely sitting on the top. Either way wearing appropriate protective gear when seating primers, is the only true advice here :) Thanks for chiming in!

    • @WildBushGrit
      @WildBushGrit  3 роки тому +2

      It really depends on your shooting habits, and the deals you find, shotgun ammo is not as expensive as some rifle cartridges like 45-70 for example. But buying powders, and shells in bulk, re-using your shells, or even pick up other shooters' spent shells. You can cut prices by a good 30-40%, now if you only shoot 30 shots a year, it is not worth it. But if you shoot 200-300 shots a year, then it starts to make sense. The biggest factor here is re-using shells.

    This video is perfect. The only question I have is what type of primer did you put in the used shell? Are their certain primers you should use for steel, lead or buckshot or does that not matter its just the powder that matters and shot size?

    • @WildBushGrit
      @WildBushGrit  11 місяців тому

      This is an excellent question! Recipes will call for specific primers. But there are no categories, steel, slug... Primers have a big influence on total pressure. So when substituing, make sure to start a low powder charge and work your way up. Never substitute primer and use max charge. As for the ones I used, I don't remember but probably fed209. :) thank you for watching!

    • @WildBushGrit
      @WildBushGrit  Рік тому

      The reason i wouldn't call the 1st one perfect is the because of the shape of lips, its not deep and crisp enough, and I had loads of shells like this coming undone. I agree with you for the cave-in section, it is, how bad will depend on the size of the shots and if you are using an overshot cards or not. I wasn't in this case. So clearly not my best example. I came a long way in reloading shotshell, and I have made another video exclusively on crimping, which address most of the issues I had while reloading.

    Audran, Question: After you’ve “resized” the brass base, and the resizing bushing is still on the shell, couldn’t you simply install a new primer in the primer bushing and install the primer while removing the resizing ring all at the same time? Seems to me the Lee Loader is designed to do those two functions all in one handle pull. It would certainly reduce the number of handle pulls, right?

    • @WildBushGrit
      @WildBushGrit  3 роки тому +1

      I guess it should work, the reason I like to make this in two-step, is I like to feel the pressure of the primer going in, and not wonder if the case is aligned or not. The resizing die doesn't sit in that depression, so it's a bit of a hassle to release and prime at the same time.

    • @MikeSiemens88
      @MikeSiemens88 9 місяців тому

      @@WildBushGrit In my experience having the bushing in place helps line up the shell better during the priming stage. By the time the casing meets the primer, the sizing die is generally loose, so the feel should be the same at the end of the stroke. Looks like it was a little unstable the way you did it in 2 steps. The Lee Load-All instructions show Stage 2 as one step.

      I cannot say, if one is tighter and raise pressure or not. But the only general rule I know, is you don't want to change the crimp style while reloading. If your used shell had 6 , then you stick with 6. I often see targets load and small birdshot in 8. While bbb to #4 are 6.

      @@hak5323 Ignore Page 1, those are recipes NOT intended for 12 gauge. Get a shotgun reloading manual with recipe for 12 gauge, it will also tell you which wad & shell to use for any given recipe. The chart on page 2 just gives you an idea of weight of powder per bushing. Now that I understand your first question, you are not looking for chart, you are looking for recipe, and I will not provide those, for safety and legal reason. My advice, get a manual for 12 gauge loads. Find the recipe you want, lead or steel, powder, wad and shell. Then you can start reloading.

    Hey there, quick question I'm hoping you could help me out with. I recently got a flat of sterling competition tornado slugs, and they seem to have a mind of their own and fly in anywhich direction after 25 yards. When you inspect the unfired shell the slug either seems to be not seated straight into the shell, or that the actual slugs rifling are not uniform around the slug(to the point that some of the shells seem ovalized). It changes from shell to shell within the same 10round box. Some perfectly fine, some all wonky. Is it actually possible to seat the slugs in crooked in the shell? Or would that be a manufacturer error with the wadding/slug?

    • @WildBushGrit
      @WildBushGrit  2 роки тому +1

      I'm not familiar with sterling, but a crooked slug in the shell is unlikely, because the fit is normally snug tight. any wads at the base of the slug?
