This is probably the best demonstration of how to paint clouds that I've come across. The detailed instruction concerning how to techniques, why, color mixing, brushes, and brush techniques is most helpful to an inexperienced artist!
Yes Jerry Yarnell is a wonderful easy to follow for learning painting technique teacher. I've watched him on PBS for quite a while now, actually a few years. His art school is in Oklahoma. Love him.
Jerry, you really know how to teach very well. I can see that as you paint, you are thinking about what the student might be thinking and questioning, and so you address those points, along with even more subtle points beginners wonder about. Many thanks. Excellent cloud lesson.
I agree wholeheartedly. He’s a fine teacher indeed. At 73 I am just beginning to paint with acrylics for about a month now. I like seascapes with interesting skies and moving ocean. I’m trying to learn how to create realistic cloud formations and contrasting colors like Jerry shows us.
Jerry, dude, you're one of the only people on line "teaching" who can paint. I dig how you explain color theory as well as technique. Thanks for the art.
Rocks and Clouds...just what I needed to learn! You sir are brilliant, and a profoundly incredible instructor. Your tutorials leave me in awe! Thank you so very much for sharing your beautiful talent. When I read about you selling your first painting, my heart was with you as you ran home to share the good news with your parents!
jerry, you taught me everything I know about painting,i learned through your school of fine art, I was signed up for over three years, loved painting along with you, thank you so much for sharing your talent your gift with me and so many others...God bless you jerry...Charisse Nunnink
Jerry, your way of letting us know how to paint clouds is calming and I want to get back to painting clouds. Some of my first art pieces were of clouds and I loved doing it being a "sky girl." Since a kid, I loved looking at them and when I got into painting, that was what I painted first. The sky is an open canvas to our imagination. ^^*
I love this guy's work. First came Bill Alexander, then Bob Ross and now since I love Acrylic painting Jerry Yarnel is my man. I have his books and I developed my own technique in Acrylic on ceramic tile with a foundation in Jerry's style. Great artist!
Beautiful sky! Thank you for the tip to mix the colors with gesso, rather than white paint. Can't believe I didn't know this already--have gone through a lot of expensive titanium white paint!
You are truly a Master of the art world! Your teaching skills are wonderful, and I appreciate learning so many techniques from you. I thank you and my heart thanks you for sharing so much of your incredible talent!
Awesome, I like your teaching, I love the clouds its just what I needed to learn, I've been stuck on my painting for awhile, because I didn't know to make my clouds more realistic, finding you was just perfect for me, you are a great teacher, you are also teaching me about the different brushes that I can work with, thank you.
Jerry Arnell ! I see you painting in CPTV Chanel CREATE and I love the way you help us to start with your beautiful painting. Thank very much to you and CREATE the Best SHOW in TV .I love all day long and I learning a Lot .Thank again.
He Jerry, tank you so much for sharing! I am soooo happy that i found you!! You are a super teacher!! God bless you and your loveones and all the good things that you do...En ook alle lieve mensen hier die de juiste vragen stellen, daar heb ik veel aan. Dear regards, lieve groetjes allemaal van Ruud en heeeel veeeel schilder plezierr...
Indeed this lesson in cloud painting is the best I have ever seen... and Jerry appears to genuinely want to help others be successful in techniques.... My hat is off to ya Jerry... thank you for this wonderful lesson... 8-)
It the only one that takes time to teaching the really important things and u get to show people hands on hands keep it up I am trying to lear and ur the only one that I have learned from to make clouds thank u so much
Thanks for the upload. I love Jerry Yarnell -- learned a ton from his show & videos. I wonder why on earth 48 of the thousand people who watched this clip would give it a thumbs down...?? Are they just dudes who don't want to watch a painting video? Or maybe they're art snobs who object to his use of gesso or something? Anyway, thumbs up from me. Thanks.
vidhound they are stupid negative people who think is joke to do that. they don't know how to paint. you will find these type ''of snake personalities''in people who are only happy when they criticzise someone negatively in their lives, very unhappy people.
+Celia Younger definitely Celia and it isn't just in art either. Certain people see someone do something that looks amazing and think they can't do it so they criticise it and bombard it with hate.
As always love to watch you paint first became acquainted with your videos on PBS Mondays and Fridays at 12 wish it was everyday LOL thankful I found you on UA-cam. You create some beautiful works! No wonder you get recognition for them, well-deserved! Have to respect your values! Thank you and God bless you yours and your career! Keep them coming.
Thank you mr. Jerry I enjoy so much your teaching lessons. And I've recently you'd some of your watercolor videos on PBS. Fascinating easy to understand very helpful. I'm very excited to try it. I'm an oil painter myself and I enjoy watching your videos on acrylics and oil alike. You do turn out beautiful paintings would like to view more of some of your original work. Breathtaking. Thank you
Thanks Jerry! I have been a fan for years, and have learned a lot for watching your shows. God Bless You...............................I hope your in good health?
i like this guy someone in a painting group was talking about how he holds the brush so i came to check it out think ill practice sum clouds later. Thank u love how he explains how to do things very good teacher
So excited watching your lessons....I want to get back to painting and your instructions are so stimulating and clear. Thanks for sharing and lighting a fire ...:)
I found an old book I have of yours, and thought to see if you are on youtube. I know this an old one, but your knowlegde still applies today! So glad I found you! 😊😊
I really love your stuff, Mr Yarnell and have followed you for many years. Your explanations and demonstrations serve well your stellar teaching abilities. Albeit, I would that this lesson might have addressed one of the most glaring faux pas made by students and even Ch-ch-ch-Chia-Pet professionals alike and affecting countless rendered skies--i.e., the vertical vanishing point. Granted, you rendered very well the selected photo example provided. But, for students--I assume students your desired primary audience--an example stressing clouds from beneath defining a vertical vanishing point focusing on clouds' graduated "far-to-near" progression opposite that of terrestrial landscape, might serve better? I see so very many upside-down skies. They are like an unscratchable itch, or that crooked wall-hanging at someone else's house that you cannot grasp enough self-control to restrain from straightening the moment backs are turned.
Yes, the paint will need to be tacky to begin the next layer or step. Try using a drying agent to speed up the process. Normally your paint will be tacky enough to begin the next step within 24 hrs.
well can you explain how do you use GESSO? y will like to know. I've seen Bob Ross and used all the time but I never see how he does it. or what kind of pain is he using.
Celia Younger Gesso should only be used as a primer, to seal the canvas and give you tooth to work on. It should never be used as "paint". Some people do it anyway, but there's a high chance their painting will crack because gesso dries much faster than oil paint.
+Aurelie Nani Jerry is using acrylic paint and the gesso/acrylic medium he uses is not the typical gesso. You will not have any problems with the painting cracking.

The difference is that acrylics dry through evaporation and they become more transparent. You may need to layer acrylics to achieve the intense colors of oil paints.
THANK YOU so much. you are a great teacher. I am waiting to get your DVD's from some of the last TV shows... and I will like to know if you have also books... Thank you. I love your work.

Beautiful !!! thanks !
Yes, the gesso must be wet for blending. Jerry is using Grumbacher gesso in place of titanium white.
Love your work very helpful. Looking to learn how dry brush technique for foggy type clouds/mist. Example: mountains going into clouds. Thank you
Great job!!!!!
wonderful!!! Thank You for posting
I think Jerry Yarnell can make a better painting in thirty minutes than Bob Ross could, but Ross is just irreplaceable. I'd choose his show any day.
Apples and Oranges. Bob Ross' lessons were geared towards beginners. Yarnell's are geared towards artists.

You sound like a orange that could instruct maybe you should have a tutorial on UA-cam.
As this is an instructional piece it may not be finished out but Jerry would always do detail finishing to his fine art pieces
How does Jerry keep his Acrylics so workable please?
VERY NICE ...............
These clouds are beautiful! What paint are you using? Acrylics? How do you get them to stay so workable?
Thank you. Just learning how to paint clouds. Do you paint with gesso? Love your video.
