I feel like grape and blackcurrant take each other's places in the U.S. and UK- here we have almost nothing grape-flavoured, but lots of things blackcurrant flavoured, and it seems like the inverse is true in the U.S
I think the reason can be traced back to WWII; with rationing in the U.K we didn't have access to many fruits and vegetables, but blackcurrants are very suited to our climate and are rich in vitamin c so they were heavily cultivated for use during war time- we couldn't get oranges from the U.S, so children were given blackcurrant juice or cordial to ensure they had enough vitamin c, while in the U.S you had oranges more easily available, so here blackcurrant grew to be a well loved childhood flavour that's carried on through the generations, but I guess in the u.s it never became a taste people were so familiar with, due to you guys having a more diverse climate than us and having access to more produce during those years.
It's like that for a lot of flavours. US apple, UK lime; US banana, UK lemon. They often go with colour as well. I think it's like it for cherry(us) and strawberry(uk). I know that some brands vary, but for the most part flavours are very different
We have a lot of lemon stuff. Almost everything yellow is lemon flavored. So I dunno what you've been eating.
natatttttack a lot of our "green" sweets are apple now, I think companies are catching on that not that many people like lime.

Helanio In the UK or US? I haven't been to the US lately but i know that they have green usually as apple, and here most of our greens are lime..

I first found out about your channel from Cooking with Dog and finally decided to check it out. I never thought I would enjoy videos of people eating food sitting in front of a camera(ever...really), but seeing how you try all these different things from many countries is really entertaining. It makes me thing of Andrew Zimmern from Bizarre Foods. "If it looks good, eat it." He also says that the best way to experience a culture is through food. It really brings the world closer together. You have a new subscriber.
I'm glad to hear that there are other channels out there that are cooking with animals, haha. I didn't know. To be fair though, mine is not a cooking/food channel as such, more random stuff.. I originally planned 2 it a year or so ago as a cooking channel but well.. no money for a reasonable camera and such

Oh Fisherman's Friends! I have a wonderful memory attached to these. My dad had them around because they helped him get through the day if he was sick. Those are some powerful mints!

My mum came back from shopping one day raving how the woman in front of her in the queue looked so fit and was glowing with health, she had some veg and about 8 loaves of Soreen in her basket 😆

When I was a kid, my mum would buy my sister and I fudge bars and make us sing the jingle to her. So happy that Mr H included the little song as it's whatever I think of when I eat them now!

These are a great, truly British selection of goods! Try Marmite on a well-buttered, toasted ONION bagel. It's like heaven on a plate.
With the Branston pickle, you might want to create a proper Ploughman's sandwich, with lettuce, tomatoes, mayonnaise, thick cheddar and malty brown bread. It's utterly delicious!

Harold Smith the ham is a must although unlike Lou I'd never put Mayo on a ploughman's ,but each to their own :)
Evilroco I wouldn't put much mayo on, but I like a bit of "glue" to keep the salad under control. The mayo is particularly nice if you put a shake of mixed herbs on it.

I eat Marmite and Bovrite (the US version of Bovril) and cheese on buttered toast for breakfast all the time, actually.
They love it, or hate it.
I'm American, but my British GF turned me on to Marmite. I eat it often (on toast) with my breakfast.
The person who sent you these did a great job of picking things out! Malt Loaf is one of my favourite foods. Just a tip if you're toasting it, it won't look like toasting it has had any effect at first as it stays soft when super hot, but take it out anyway and it will turn crispy on the outside!
I'm from the uk. Does anyone else remember those After Eights being called Mint Munchies? And there is the regular Munchies in red paper. I think those have caramel and biscuit inside.

You made me remember an advert for them. Some frightfully posh woman is describing them, really praising them up, and she ends saying, in a horrified tone, something like "And someone decided to call them 'Munchies'" 😆

I'm from the UK and Christmas wouldn't be Christmas without the Branston! I love to eat it with cold turkey after Christmas, with nice creamy mashed potato and salad. Also, a 'cheese and pickle (Branston) sandwich' is one of the most popular lunchtime sandwiches and very British. Also cold turkey and piccalilli sandwiches are also good.
Have you ever had a chunky peanut kitkat? Those are my favourite chocolate bar!

I grew up with my dad always having Fisherman's Friends when he was sick. I love them now. I find they have a slightly malted flavor in addition to the menthol and eucalyptus.

Normally, here in the UK you're supposed to put the Branston Pickle in a sandwich with cheddar cheese. A Cheese and Pickle sandwich is a very popular sandwich over here in the UK but unknown in the US. I know this because my American flatmate at University had no clue what it was. A common variation of this sandwich is a 'Ploughman's Sandwich' which is cheddar, pickle, iceberg lettuce, mayo and cured ham. You also have pickle here in something we call a 'Ploughman's Lunch' which involves having a dollop of pickle, a baguette or slices of bread, a large wedge/slab of cheddar, some butter and salad, a hardboiled egg and some pickled onions on the side. This is what farmers - and of course ploughmen - traditionally ate as far back as the 14th century and has been a national favourite ever since.
The ploughman's lunch style meal is undoubtedly as old as bread, cheese and pickle themselves. However the actual marketing phrase "Ploughman's Lunch" was coined in the 1950s to get people to eat cheese in pubs again once it came off rationing: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ploughmans_lunch
Branston is also excellent in Ham sandwiches, and Spam ones too
I read up a bit on blackcurrant and apparently it was a potential disease vector (as classified by the US) that could infect other plants. It became a major problem for US trees during the 20th century and thus got restricted. This is probably the major reason as to why blackcurrant is not a popular flavour in the US.
Spot on: it was banned to protect the logging industry. The ban was delegated to individual states in 1966, but only first overturned in 2003 and some states still ban them, so they're only making a slow comeback.

Those Eccles cakes are my staple to give to people visiting me in the UK. A true taste of my hometown, baked walking distance from my family home.
Also malt loaf is a true favourite of manual workers because of its super high energy levels. You can do anything after a malt loaf breakfast!
Still amazed that Branston pickle isn't a worldwide phenomenon yet 😂

Haha this amuses me so much to watch. I'm from london and lived in the us for 3 years. I was heartbroken when I couldn't find walkers, piccalilli, branston, marmite and dilutable juice! Even sausages, milk, cheese and bread is soooo different. Love your vids and you are adorable.

Branston pickle goes well with ham on a sandwich, perfect childhood lunch box treat.
Well done with what you did with the branston pickle hun. That's exactly what us british do. Some have it with cold meats aswell. In the UK its said that with marmite, you either really love it or really hate it. That saying was so well know that they incorporated it into thier TV ad. Great video again hun.

In the midwest, we have Fisherman's Friend and it is sold as a lozenge for coughs. It looks the same too. Not sure if the UK version isn't as strong or has less medicinal ingredients, but it really helps with coughs.

There's a recipe from nigella Lawson called spaghetti with marmite. I've tried it several times and it is yummy and very simple to prepare. I advise you to try it! It is essentially a sauce made with melted butter, marmite and a tiny bit of cooking water from the pasta with with to cover spaghetti! Nice!
I love how enthusiastic you are about everything! I'd be the worst at this, I'm such a fussy eater. Americans don't have diluting juice/squash?! I couldn't survive, that's all I drink. So funny watching you eat things that I see every day, yet how you describe them makes me want to go and buy them now!
Pickle is great with cold meats such as turkey or gammon. In the UK it's quite traditional to have such a thing around Christmas, and the spread works well in sandwiches.
That squash stuff is just called cordial here (Australia) But it looks like that is a bit more concentrated. Also I'm SO glad you know how to properly eat vegemite/marmite seeing americans eat it by the spoonful and then almost puking and saying it's a horrible product does my head in.
Also as a suggestion, vegemite and avocado on toast is delicious. I'm sure it would work with Marmite as well :)

The fruit squash drinks, the boiled-down goodness of Marmite or the pickled fruits, veg, etc. along with things like evaporated milk, sausages, pastries, makes me think that the defining characteristic of British food is that it's made and cooked to be stored and brought out later.
I'm not sure about where you are from, but in Pennsylvania and Nevada they have liquids that you need to dilute. They are call mio and I do believe crystal light has some too. You find them near the water section in stores.
Ah, Mio is what I was thinking! Yeah I've seen those in Nevada and I've seen Crystal Light, but they're advertised more like tools to maintain a low calorie diet or help you drink water if you find the taste of water to be too bland.
Rainsofchange Yes they are artificially sweetened, but most thing that are no sugar added are. I would love to know if the one she tried in this video has artificial sweeteners in it, because it would be wonderful to he able to try on without them. I really dislike the artificial stuff.
The one she drank in this video was called Robinsons Squash'd, Google it and it should come up:), it says it has no added sugar also. Not too sure if it has artificial sweeteners or not.
Yeah- regular squash is actually a bit different from mio type things- squash is usually less concentrated and in a bigger bottle but Mr H probably sent emmy this type because you can't really ship a whole bottle of cordial lol. Mio is more of a weight loss helping tool kinda thing while cordial is purely for taste and its actually quite bad for you because of the amount of sugar haha
Nicole Tucker Don't you have squash/cordial in the U.S?!?! What do you drink...? i mean pure orange juice is great, but it isn't a thirst quencher, or is pop (soda- which I can't stand). 99.998% of Brits drink cordial daily as it's either that or....water (as a proper thirst quencher). You must have some kind of flavoured water alternative?! By the way, there are thousands of different kinds of squash/cordial in the U.K- many have no artificial sweetners in them, in fact...i think nearly all of them exclude artificial stuff (the cheap ones don't).
Hallo Emmy.This is the first of your posts that i have discovered and i just want to say that you are an oasis in the multitude of similar blogs(vlogs),,,You are articulate and intelligent and such a welcome contrast to the "this is just awesome" kind of reviews that Americans seem to always give..keep it up..lol
My mother used to give us the Fishermans Friends when we went skiing. It would help keep our mouths closed, to keep from getting sore throat, and keep our noses clear for breathing. Smart mom.
Fisherman's friends are my go to when I have a cold. Tends to clear ut up right away. Lived them since I was a kid.

This is my favourite "Emmy Eats the U.K." so far, because it's the most traditional. Most of the foods featured were around 100 years ago. Eccles cakes and piccalilli date back to the 18th century. Soreen, Fisherman's Friend are 19th century. Marmite, Branston's pickle and Cadbury's Fudge from the first half of the 20th century. It's a much better reflection of British food than modern sweets.
I love having marmite on my cheese on toast. Simple smear on a little marmite and while your cheese is solid and cold and wait until the cheese and marmite is nice bubbly and brown. Yummy. Also Marmite is great with sausage and a great flavour enhancer to meaty stews and soups.
Branston Pickle is amazing! Love it on cheese sandwiches or with corned beef. I like picalilli too, but not as much.

Usually you put a small like shot of the squash in first and then dilute it. Sometimes I used sparkling water as an alternative
I have a craving for Soreen now. I need to buy some and put it in the toaster because it's just so good when toasted.

So I did a little research and apparently blackcurrant flavors/drinks weren't that popular here in Britain initially. But during the food shortages in WW2 blackcurrant cultivation was encouraged by the government because there were very few fruits available with a high vitamin C content that could grow abundantly in Britain's climate. Blackcurrant squashes and cordials were distributed to schoolchildren for free during this period to help with nutrition. It's been a favourite ever since.
Every time I go to visit my guy in NZ, I chicken out on trying Marmite, lol. We have Fisherman's Friends in Canada as well, we use them when we have colds. I actually picked up some Black current ones from New Zealand the last time I was there...so good.
The Squash is kinda like Mio in the US. Which is another thing you squirt in water to drink because it's much to strong to drink on its own (although I knew some kids who would make a game out of taking straight shots of Mio) In Germany it's normal to have syrups that you add to Bubbly (or carbonated water) to make soda.
In the UK it's popular to find cheese and pickle sandwiches but using the branston pickle! I find it delightful
marmite on a bagel with cream cheese, its incredible you'll love it!

i live for marmite!! its my favourite, i tend to eat it with cheese and crackers or i mix it up and have pasta and cheese with marmite mixed through it!! delicious
The best way to eat marmite is on cheese on toast. Toast a slice of bread under the grill (not in the toaster) on 1 side. Once cooked flip it over to the uncooked side and apply the marmite. Sprinkle grated cheese on top and toast the untoasted side.
It is pure heaven.
It also also great on home made garlic bread
I like Soreen Toasted, I don't know if many others in the uk toast it. It's delicious both Toasted or not with Golden Syrup on it. Very sticky & sweet.
We have those fisherman lozenges in Canada too! But I only eat those when I have a sore throat, not fond of the taste but it works! They have these other flavors...I think a lemon one that I liked.
The After Eight cubes you got used to be called Mintola and there's a toffee & biscuit version of those with milk chocolate called Munchies - not sure if you've ever been sent those, but they're lovely if you've not tried them yet!
We have fishermans friends here in Australia. My Mum is addicted to them haha, she always has some in her hand bag. They are super strong! They always make me sneeze when I have one.
I've been trying stuff from other countries too. it's awesome lol I recently went crazy for christmas and got Cadbury heroes which had that fudge bar in them, also tried Italian chocolates called baci, got some tortuga rum chocolate turtles and all kinds of other stuff. I think your videos got me to try new things. I just wish I had a translator so I knew what some of the stuff in the international market is lol

Here in Malaysia, we have something called Marmite Chicken. It's deep-fried chicken mix with some Marmite, soy sauce, etc. It's amazing. Tastes absolutely amazing.
Dolly Parton's Soreen is an all time classic.

I picked up some Branston Pickle at Cost Plus World Market after my English friend recommended it to me. I've found it goes amazing in the middle of a ham and cheese panini. Delicious!
I'm not sure if this is true, but the Picadilli reminds me a lot of Sweet Mustard Pickles from Australia.
This is great, loads of these are SO common in the UK so I thought Id share a little background. Squash drinks are sooo common in the UK more common than fizzy drinks and blackcurrant is the most common flavor by far (we don't have grape flavor so the "purple" flavors are always blackcurrant). Branston pickle is a bit of a staple, its the sort of thing you grandpa will have 12 jars of in his pantry and its often had with cheese and cold meats or in a cheese sandwich (the same for piclili but I think its less common). After eights are actually things you have after big dinners with cups of coffee or tea, my family always eat them after Christmas dinner, the small square ones you have there are relatively new and are the "candy bar" equivalent sort of like rolos. Also I've never met anyone who eats fisherman's friends when they're not sick! They sell them at the pharmacists with the lozenges ect..

The stickiness of Soreen reminds me of the squidginess on the outside of Caribbean bun which you also have with butter and cheese. You chose all the best things to try I think and the pickle and Marmite I would particular recommend to people who like Asian foods because of the umami going on and how popular pickled foods are in Korea/Japan. Cannot stand Fisherman's Friend though and I like cough drops!
Marmite/Vegemite on buttered toast with some sliced avocado and cheese is my favorite breakfast!

We have lots of drink mixes in the us! Mio, crystal light. They are in the sports drink or water section

my favourite way to eat branston pickle is to eat it with cheese on toast (which i suppose is like grilled cheese but with just one piece of bread its cooked under what I think Americans call a broiler (but we call a grill) and I personally like to spread it on the part toasted bread before I put the cheese on top

Loooove Marmite. I want to try all the Marmite treats-- like the crisps and chocolates. I usually just have it on toast with cheese and a poached egg. But I use it sparingly, not because the flavor is too concentrated for me, but because it's so hard to get a hold of in the States! Working on a jar of XO, currently.
Malt loaf super cute its bouncy to touch and sometimes when you open theres a mini face cos the rasins form and sometimes the malt loaf has shape to it its the best cut thin and small butter added on the layer and its super good for you i grew up on this and i used to get as a treat malt loaf and it had cherries inside when i was about 3 years old never forget the malt loaf :D

They do a several different Soreen flavours these days. There's a fruity one and one with banana in it. They also do traditional loaves, sliced loaves, and little individually wrapped "cakes" so you can put them in lunch boxes.
That's nice am not in England many years and there's nothing like that here just have the memories :)
Squash is also great in club soda. Or as a flavor component in a cocktail.

Robinsons squash'd is super concentrated squash. With squash you normally have a 1 : 5 or 6 ratio with water, but with squash'd you only need 1 or 2 squeezes. Blackcurrant is a very common flavour here in the UK, and grape doesn't exist, we don't have grape Fanta or any of those nice artificial grape sweets or drinks.

Eccles Cakes are lovely with strong blue cheese As is Christmas Cake and Mince Pies (the sweet christmas raisin based pies). The best place to store Marmite is, In the bin/trash can.
