How To Make A Smokeless (Almost) Fire Pit Out Of Salvaged Metal

- I make an almost smokeless fire pit, that looks like a woven basket, using salvaged metal. The steel straps have been in my side yard since my house was built. I've been thinking about this DIY project for a while. I was excited to see it actually built.

When GreenShortz plays with fire, I'm watching.
Maybe my favorite comment ever and a fitting mantra! Thank you for watching, Gerry. I promise more fire to come. :-)
This is really impressive. I like that it looks like a woven basket. Years ago, I learned how to make pine needle baskets; but, for me, it was more like sewing than weaving. I've been wanting to learn basket weaving for a long time. Thanks for sharing this video.
Hi Donna. Good morning, friend. Thank you for watching.
I like the banding idea! Very different!!
Thank you for watching.
Very nice... would be proud of that burn basket!
Thank you for watching, Kim.
Good morning. Hope you had some good down time. Thank you for the tutorial. God Bless and stay safe.
Thank you, Joey. I hope have a nice weekend. God bless you as well.
@@GreenShortzDIY Binging on the Black Fly videos. You mentioned to me last year that you were going to rebuild again and I was looking at all of your "Info" on them.
That's a good idea on how to re-purpose materials, think i'll give it a try since I have some steelies taking up space. Thanks for a great video.
I absolutely love this.. I just think it needs a handle like an Easter basket
Thank you for watching. Is this the Robert Smith I went to college with? :-)
it's beautiful! Gonna send this to my automechanic son... who has lots of car parts... :)
Thank you, Kathleen. Thank you for watching.
That looks SO GREAT!
Thank you. Thank you for watching.
What a great idea. I think you are the first person to find a practical use for used steel strapping. Another terrific idea come to fruition. Wishing you and your family a blessed new year, gentle weather, safe work habits and restful evenings around your eclectic fire pit. Peace brother
Thank you, JW. I’ve been mystified by the ways to reuse the steel strap. Was so pleased this looked as cool as it did. Thank you for watching and for your continued support. I’m sure you noted my safe toes and my use of the respirator. :-) I appreciate you, brother.
That really did come out very attractive!
Thank you, CI. Thanks for watching.
Muy Bonita canasta, Saludos desde Chihuahua México!
Awesome business!
Well made 👏
Thank you. Thank you for watching.
Looks great
Thank you for watching.
The fire pit looks AWESOME Tom! I love the basket weave.
Thank you, Greg! It made me happy. Thank you for watching.
Nice, result my dude, this is one of your best creations to date. Your secondary burn probably just isn't letting enough air through. Pop a few more holes in there and I'll bet it gets even better.
Thank you, Benjamin. I had fun with this one! Thank you for the tip for n the secondary air. I’ll add some holes. Thank you for watching.
Very nice, I love the idea of one material emulating another and this really does look like a basket. I'll admit I don't watch every video you put up (life gets in the way), but I love to come back for the "train's here" and the cool projects. Keep up the great work.
Thank you, Steve. I glad to hear life gets in the way of watching too much UA-cam. Hopefully you are out on your bike. :-) Thanks for watching when you do.
@@GreenShortzDIY Haha, I was out on my bike, despite it being a refreshing 31F/-0.5C. 👍
Great job! Love the look! I can relate to the 6 years of saving stuff for a project. Also I couldn’t help but think that you were channeling your inner Mimi as you basket wove the strapping. Thanks for sharing your creative vision.
Thanks Cuz! I was probably channelling my inner Claudia...who was channeling her inner Mimi. :-) Thanks for watching.
If that centre pipe was taller with more holes drilled in to it would that not work better?Love your videos keep it up 👍🏽
If it still smokes cut a few groups on the side of your pipe flat just stick your soft flatty at your grander flat in there and then you shouldn't have any smoke because you're not getting the air flow where the fire is you're getting to come up the pipe and out the top of it because it hair air will be heated from the fire and shoot straight up that pipe and won't go into the fire
Thank you for the tips, Rudy. I love that you pic have a fish in it. Thank you for watching.
amazing
Thank you for watching.
I like it
Thank you for watching.
Metal supermarket?? Im guessing thats some kind of metal shop or even a recycling center, but not entirely certain Im right about that. What’s another name by which a the kind of place you mention might be known? What would I search for in the phonebook or via Google? This is such a fun project . Smokeless or not, I think this would be great on fire bricks on my patio?
There is actually a store called “The Metal supermarket.” :-) They have lots of locations. If you have one near you, ask to see the “drop room.” They charge by the pound. There is also a supplier called Online Metals. The home improvement stores also have metal like the bar and round stock I used. The rest of the metal was scavenged. Thank you for watching.
@@GreenShortzDIY Wow. I’ll def do some searching. Ive never heard of these places, but OH! the options to let creativity flow! Thanks much.
Total Smokless :
an air intake, vertical tube at center, holes 6-8mm

....
Cool idea.
(I hadn't watched yours till end -Ü- ...).
maybe shorter :
air inlet length = 2/3 chimney length
'(1st rule of RS "laws")
Great tips. I love getting all the knowledge and experience from others in the comments. One of the best things about UA-cam. Thank you for watching.
Another question: welders wear a protective welding mask to protect face and, more importantly, eyes. Those welds are SUPER bright even in video, so since Im a bit naive re: welding … might watching the welds pose risk to my eyes/vision?
The camera is a good enough filter to protect your eyes. The welder is definitely maxing out the white point of the camera’s luminance, but it can’t go beyond “100% white” into the intensity of light that harms human eyes. So, your eyes are safe. Thank you for watching.
Like your “airport”
Thank you. I’m assuming you’re the Scott Shamel that’s also my cousin. :-)
