I first met Christine when she was still in High School, even then we knew she was meant for greater things. Her passing was a shock for all of us, an Extraordinary Human Being.
I'm now an old 62 year old Aussie guy. I was lucky enough to be physically touched by her when I was a younger man at 30 . Coogee Bay Hotel at a gig she did with her band. Full of grog and pot ,it was a magical night. Wish for those days again. Being old sux !
How was she so absolutely, unapologetically sexy? She was 24 when this song came out, and she has the energy and presence of a powerful woman in her 40s. Amazing performer, gone before her time and deeply missed.
What a force of nature Chrissy was. An uncompromising individual who truly did it her way, with a voice and attitude like no other. Tragic how young she was when she was torn away from us. Missed so much. RIP
I saw her at the Australia Made concert at endeavour oval back in the 80,s along with all the other great Aussie bands of the time. Awesome weekend of great Aussie music
What an incredible woman! Running the gauntlet of the yobbos in Geelong, to lead singer and songwriter of this excellent band. Then she found the love of her life a jazz drummer in New York. A life cut too short, but what a life and what an example to women. She lives on with spirit. The best answer to your enemies is success. She nailed it.
Couldn't agree more, a perfect 80s pop rock package, subtle keyboard lines fill out between the soaring but melodic guitar parts, Chrissie's unique vocalisaton over a lyrical story straight fron a teenager's dream.
I just found out she died. I can't believe how hard it's hitting me. Saw them open for the Furs touring this LP, and fell in love. She was so smart, so anti-expectation, so ANGRY on stage. I was so depressed that every female I asked who saw her simply thought she was "weird". She was my anti-heroine, a rebel against attempted exploitation. The woman I never found. RIP Chrissie Amphlette, I love you.
What you wrote ,definitely straight from the heart. You saw in Chrissy what many other rock n roll romantics have. Something special, unique. Rebellious and vulnerable at the same time. I've found over the years, its the more basic types, people with more simple minds, that find people with more complex minds and characters "weird". Just means they don't have the capacity to fathom more complex characters then themselves yeah?
This song was 20 years before it`s time.. I remember seeing them live at the tyabb Pub doing there whole kick ass set and crissy was out of control good, This is the era of music being punched in your face blowing the ear drums.
I love a lot of aussie bands that came out of the 70s and some from the 90s but the 80s produced an unbelievable body of work from so many excellent bands who cut their teeth performing live at pubs and clubs. With the fall away in that music scene (pokies maybe to blame?) and the advent of auto tune, I really cannot believe that we will ever see anything like it again on that scale.
I really thought jezabels would push on after synthia, great album imo, however fate would have it that their keyboardist had to get treated for cancer so their world tour was cancelled. hayley mary, their lead singer, has released some very beautiful solo songs this year but unfortunately they didn't really boom. the old fashioned well structured rock just doesnt make hits like it did back in the day. All the kids want songs that dont sound like music. something they can grasp and say "i bet you haven't heard anything like this before" no matter how unpleasant it may be on your ears. (think grunge to genx or emocore to millenials.) Her solo EP slaps if you're into that high intensity classic rock or alt rock. My emphasis is on younger people because the 35+ crowd doesn't really listen to new bands unless its something thats a generic overproduced hit.
You should bear in mind that we could go out, see a band and drive home using the back roads to avoid booze buses. Usually a $3 cover charge to see the band.
The clashing guitar sound is tremendous too. Every aspect of this song defies analysis, because analysing is reductive, like trying to understand a flower by picking it apart, yet it comes together brilliantly. So alive!
I was very upset to discover the lovely lead singer Ms. Amphlett was gone, and for years now, a mixture of me just not knowing and not seeing it anywhere until now, unless the mostly reported it in Australia? This saddens me like it just happened with the ridiculous loss of great musical talent this year. The Divinyls shaped me growing up and was one of the first Cd's I ever listened to all the way through at my School library. I will miss her like I knew her.
I was a student in Brisbane at the time of her death, had been in Australia less than 3 months. Her death was covered in all the TV networks. At the time I knew vaguely of Divinyls, that unfortunate event made me rediscover their music - "Pleasure and Pain" is my personal favourite.
You did know her. I know this sounds freaky but on a night that a different musician died without realising he was dead I had a very strong urge to play his music and in particular to sing a song that resonated so much with me. And I felt a real presence in the room. It's beyond description but it happened. The artist? Leonard Cohen. The song? First We Take Manhattan. Truly great music is transcendant. It's a portal. I've experience this enough to know this is true. (You did know her). What confuses the issue is when fans want too much from the artist and think they know everything or want to know 'everything' however mundane. The artist is in the art. Simple sounding but true on a profound level.
Rick Grossman, in one of his spots for the JMC Academy, emphasizes the importance of a musican developing a distinctive style. He is a master of style and technique and has placed his immediately recognizable trademark on many Divinyls and Hoodoo Gurus recordings.

RIP Chrissy Amphlett Legendary Australian Rock Godess. Love the bass line in this - makes the whole song flow beautifully. This is the song that got me into them. Freaky and wonderful!
It's disappointing that everyone seems to think Divinyls were a one-hit wonder. Not only did they make great music for more than a decade but considering that they became big at a time when on the whole style in general was shit should make them stand out more than that. Perhaps it's like all musicians though. When they try to write music that is essentially pushing the social boundaries or is a straight up social commentary, the critics pan them. Goes to show you that just as with genius, great art is seldom recognised in its own time. Sexiest chick in a school uniform I've ever seen on stage. RIP Chrissy
No one thinks the Divinyls were a one-hit wonder. So you're wrong there. They were a well known band from the 80s and were around for a long time so are considered by many to be one of the best Australian bands of all time. Any band that can stick around for a long time are not one-hit wonders.

It is criminal how many underrated groups there were from down under in that era.
They weren’t really underrated they were really successful and even eventually cracked it in the US too
