Long Hot Summer Days - Turnpike Troubadours

- Well I'm gonna pick up some of these empties lord,
As soon as I find where they lay,
Tied-off them jolly and leavin my ends,
On a long hot summer day.
Forever day I'm workin on the Illinois River,
Get a half a day off with pay,
Oh tow boat pickin up barges,
On a long hot summer day.
Well I got me a gal in Pekin,
She's a good oh gal okay,
Oh she's sittin there waitin by a window fan,
On a long hot summer day.
Forever day I'm workin on the Illinois River,
Get a half a day off with pay,
Oh tow boat pickin up barges,
On a long hot summer day.
Well last night we had pork for supper,
Tomorrow it'll be chicken consommé,
And fruit jar full of iced tea,
On a long hot summer day.
Forever day I'm workin on the Illinois River,
Get a half a day off with pay,
Oh tow boat pickin up barges,
On a long hot summer day.
Well we dropped a man off in Beardstown,
When we got off yesterday,
Gonna get off down in Alton,
On a long hot summer day.
And forever day I'm workin on the Illinois River,
Get a half a day off with pay,
Oh tow boat pickin up barges,
On a long hot summer day.
Forever day I'm workin on the Illinois River,
Get a half a day off with pay,
Oh tow boat pickin up barges,
On a long hot summer day.
Forever day I'm workin on the Illinois River,
Get a half a day off with pay,
Oh tow boat pickin up barges,
On a long hot summer day.
I am a tow boater. I approve this anthem.
😁
Tow boat life is the real life to live 💪
This is the sound of the rural Midwest finally being seen by a major country act. No more songs about West Virginia hollers, Dallas, or Nashville and more songs about Pekin!
An artist never knows how far their music will reach, or just who it will influence. Apparently, John's music spoke to Evan Felker of the Turnpike Troubadours. I think John's influence reached far and wide. More so than he ever dreamed.
whats wrongwith dallas?
@dante-yu2py nothing but steers and queers
I listin to this song at least 12 times a day.
same
I love on the Illinois, and think it's so cool that I know all the towns named in the song!
@@joshuascott2551 qqq
It's my song that gets me out of a bad mood
Those are rookie numbers we gotta get those numbers up
I love hearing this when Matt Carpenter comes up to the plate.
In case you were wondering, this is not an original tune by the Troubadours. This was written and recorded on the 70'` by the late, great John Hartford who in addition to being an award winning song writer, singer, fiddler and banjo player was a certified river boat captain.
Badass comment man! I work the river
Winston Tucker I am from St. Louis, John Hartford's home. I still love the organic, John Hartford, version better, ....but, I do love that this band remade it for a new generation.
Hey I'm from stl too!
Winston Tucker Thanks for the insight. I didn't know that this was a John Hartford song. Your comment made it that much more cool! Cheers!
Winston Tucker im glad I saw this comment when I scrolled down, I too, was gonna point this out...
This is what one would call QUALITY MUSIC!
Love Illinois to bad we have Chicago
Well said
Lived for 30 years in Pike County, between the Illinois and Mississippi Rivers and not far from Beardstown. I feel this song.
Rushville, Schuyler County for me. I was a cook on the river for 12 years
Great deer hunting
@@cornonthecob1268 Yes, it is. The deer population in Pike is about 3X that of the human population!
I drive a truck cross country and this slaps. I follow the Missouri river
as a towboater on the Illinois river, this song kicks ass
I'm trying to get to Illinois
thats a mistake lol. John is he talking about pekin il in his song?
+agcrx33 pekin is not known for high quality women
meth heads lol
You are right
A fruit jar full of iced tea is great on a long hot summer day! I love summer!
Also see John Hartford's version, just him, his fiddle, and the audience singing and clapping along, from a concert in Ohio. I really like this version, too.
my favorite band singing about my home town got to love it :)
Do you all still play home games at Affton Ice Rink?
Grew up playing at affton and watching Jr Blues in the 80s /90s
I got a DUI last summer after watching them for the first time. Their bass player, RC Edwards was in the class with me haha. He's a solid dude. True red dirt band
ISAAC SCHULTZ I don't think I would classify a drunk driver as a solid dude in any instance but to each their own.
Kyle Boise everyone makes mistakes
Kyle Boise don't be such a lil bitch
Yeah, because everyone who ever was forced to take a class must be a terrible person.
@@KyleBoise have a beer and drive a vehicle without hurting anyone, must be a terrible person.
Song never gets old especially when Kayaking down n the Illinois River!!!!
My work has this in their playlist and it comes on nonstop 😂
i love this song, reminds me of my days working on the mississippi river pulling all those empty barges was some work bud decent money, really appreciate that they made a song about actually how it works on a tug boat wish they would make more songs like this
Great song with lots of river memories. I grew up on the Illinois River upstream from Pekin, Putnam County near Starved Rock Park, worked a bit pushing snow off barge covers. Not exactly a a long hot summer day but brutal hard work and I quit for an office job.
that upward harmonica note at 0:58 is the best part of the song
my husband is a tow boater !! living this song !!
C Lee mine is too! lol 💪❤❤ I sure do miss him right now 😟
Never heard of these guys, saw them in concert last night, & fell in love, way to up on a great show!!
Welcome to the Turnpike Tribe!!! You're gonna be hooked from now on without question.
I lived in Tahlequah, where they got started. Wish they hadn't split.
I worked on the USCG Sangamon on the Illinois River. Lots of the long hot summer days and long cold winter days.
The Illinois they are referring to is in Eastern Oklahoma - USCG is not there.
@jasongoldsmith6934 I think you need to look at a map off to the north and east of Oklahoma. Pekin is in Illinois. Hence Illinois River? 😅
this used to be my favorite songs, and i even remember my first ever music concert was a turnpiek troupadoors concert at the rodeo. I rember when they played this song at the end.
I actually work the illinois river!....dresden lock chief....I absolutely love this place and my.job....unreal. nothing like it. God bless the troubadours for making this song. And the canal boats in the video... waterways, baby that's where it's at!!! Towboats move more commodities and materials than anyone else. A 15 barge tow has same material/commodity as 250 semis....and 1/2 the fuel used. 💪🇺🇸
Absolutely love this Turnpike song and many more from them, and am fascinated by our waterway's living in south central Illinois, but, as owner/operator trucker hauling bulk freight with a frameless end-dump I'd say that tug is going to burn alot of fuel trying to get to the field to haul our farmers harvest, or the quarry for gravel, the mine for coal, the oven for coke, or scrapyards and lime and alloy facilities to service alot of our steel mills and foundry's. Nonetheless our waterways also play a vital role in moving this country.
A towboat can push as much cargo as 225 semis in 1 tow. And same amount of fuel
Farmer here; work within five miles of the Illinois River at Havana, and every time I hear this song, I get the fucking chills...
That’s my neck of the woods!
Rushville here. I worked on the river for 12 years as a cook.
Yellowstone brought me here!
Welcome to the Troubadour family. Now hope they get back together!
Boy , where was that song back when summer meant hay haulin and bustin ass. Sears cassette deck , fosgate punch amp and some kicker boxes behind the seat in a 75 Chevy dually with a 454 and 4 in the floor with 411 posi-track out back and bias ply mud tires. 4 miles a gallon and an raised intake on a 4 pot double pumpin carb. 12 inch glass packs and straights. Amen.!!!!. And sure nuff, thanks for the song and the esy it makes a red blooded country boy feel!
I hope you had the double tanks on that 454 or it was a short drive.
This song came out in 1976
Roy Dale Cooper - you just made every democrat listening choke on their tofu
@@Spoons7414 I wasn't born yet til 1979
Strange, just discovered this band a while back and now I see they mention my home town, Alton, Il in their song. Now I like em even more.
Now batting for the St. Louis Cardinals, 3rd baseman, #13 Matt Carpenter.......
Eddie Rose LOL yes, this is exactly what brought me here.
His dad was my baseball coach in prosper tx. Funny seeing this here...
Small world I guess
I don’t get it but I want to

Definitely don’t get near the pekin girls. You get the itch as soon as you see the welcome to pekin sign.

Really like this band. Never heard them till today.
I grew up on the Illinois River in Kampsville, IL . I knew many people who worked on the barges. This brings me back.
Whats so great about this song for me is I grew up in Illinois. I know where some of these pictures where taken. Great song guys!
I'm Pekin, IL and love this song remade!!!!
are you proud you're Pekin? I wouldn't be
Ryan Rice lol Mortonite here, don't like Pekin
Definitely got the long hot summers day! Louisiana humid and the skeeters are thick as thieves! Have to be half mad to want to do this job :)
Hot and humid in Nebraska. Like 100 degrees today. I'm a 3 hours from the Missouri river. It's really muggy near the river when I visit in the summer. Catchy song.
I have always loved this and I have been listening to it sence I was 5
im originally from peoria illinois and i know this stretch of the illinois river very well.
love this song!!!!
One of my favorite bands. Love y'all
as a towboater from port st. louis this song is amazing
Funny how I'm from a small town outside of STL and the Turnpike Troubadours are my favorite band and I never new this was Matt Carpenters song. Just makes me enjoy watching Carpenter play even more!
Kyle Bartlett John Hartford wrote this song.
Loved this song knowing Carp was about to hit
This is a pretty good remake. . . I still think it's cool this song mentions a couple of real IL towns (Pekin and Beardstown, both on the Illinois River). Great tune!
Alton also
I live between pekin an beardstown dude must be from around here.
Prior Beardstown native
The original was dog awful
Proud man from O`Fallon Illinois! I've been everywhere they talk about and me and my uncle both work on the river. Lemme tell ya. It SUCKS.
Its probably a pretty rough job
Being from TX brought me here🤫😂😂😂🤣🤣 Midland baby!!!
Good sippin' tunes, I tell ya.
Love their version of this song!! I cant figure out if they are metal grass, folk rock or some new age bluegrass band?? It rocks, it's bluesy and twangy!! Whatever it is I like it a lot!!!!!!
They are Red Dirt!!! You gotta take a look at some of their other songs.
Is this a cover? Who is the original artist?

Finally some good music........
nice pictures of the Mississippi river when they're singing about the Illinois river and naming off Illinois river towns
Gotta love southern Illinois even though Chicago sucks 🤣💪
I live in Pike County Illinois between Beardstown and Hardin. Great song.
As steel mill worker, I love this song
Beardstowns about 23 miles from where I lived. The Illinois River is about 10 miles from home depending on what part you go to.
Rushville here.
I recall John Hartford doing this many years ago. Great song!
From near Beardstown. I worked on the river for 12 years as a cook. I'm an RN now. Miss the river though, it never leaves your heart
still rocking this in the winter hell yeah
I love how all the people comment about being from Illinois. These boys are talking about the part of the Illinois River in Oklahoma where they’re from.
why would they talk about that when they didn't even write the song? Also, those places are names of towns ON the Illinois river IN Illinois.
@@davidbryan1971 maybe because the song matches geographically from where they’re from so it makes sense. Like how ppl sing “New York” by Alicia Keys but they didn’t write it.
@@AbruptandOffensive Did you even listen to the song? It is a song about tugboats pushing barges down the Illinois river in Illinois. It has nothing to do with the Illinois river in Oklahoma!
@@davidbryan1971 bless your heart. Are you from Oklahoma? Do you know the history of the Turnpike Troubadours? They’re from a town in Oklahoma on the Illinois river so that river holds a special place to them. So they sing the song because to THEM it holds special meanings as to where they came from. It’s really not that hard to figure out.
ua-cam.com/video/8S6KW4QYXsw/v-deo.html
Partner the boys themselves say it’s about the Illinois river in Illinois in the video I shared above.
Everyone gets these lyrics wrong because they get them off of lyric websites that use phonetic computer software. The third line is actually supposed to be "Tied off them Joliet leavin' lines" as written by the late John Hartford and the chorus is "For every day I'm workin' on the Illinois River." I was proud to call John my friend and can say he'd be proud of how the Troubadours treated his song.
Absolutely love love love this song

Help! I'm addicted to the song. I can't get enough.
This song hits different when you’re a towboater
OMG! I have been looking for the words to this song forever! Thanks ya all!
Damn good song. LOVE Turnpike Troubadours
Anybody else from around the cities that they're naming in this song? ✋
Near Beardstown. 10 miles
Exceptional song, one of my favorites
Im from pakistan and I've slept to this song many nights, such a vibe to have ar 3am
I believe these are the same Troubadour's who play the Love County Frontier Days in Marietta. Bad ass group
One of the best shows Ive seen is turnpike and the dirty river boys, bad ass
Every day I'm working on upper Mississippi I get a full day off with pay. I wouldn't take that 14/7 bullshit. Solid jam though. One more week ashore, then its back to the river just in time for steak day!
I got a job as a cook on a barge waiting for my papers to go..I am excited and I love love this song
Love it - I'm from Illinois and I know every town they mentioned plus the pics from St. Louis. I'm from down state - we are the State of Illinois.. up north is the State of Chicago in the county of CROOK.... ;)
I wish there would have been more pics up and down the river on the Illinois side of the river. Nice pics of St. Louis but they were repeated numerous times... still one in the same, a catchy song and I still like it!!!
Its talking about the Illinois river in Oklahoma
Trey Thompson , sorry Trey, but it's Illinois river in Illinois, unless in some magical way, the Illinois in Oklahoma started to flow into the Mississippi. Pekin, which was mentioned, is in illinois
At the end it shows the map and it says Oklahoma the guy busted added pictures
Sorry, Trey.......still wrong....why would they be singing about these places that are obviously in Illinois and along the Mississippi? BTW, I'm originally from Illinois so I know what I'm talking about.
こんなにもザアメリカという曲は久しぶりだし

@@JohnSmith-wm9ii Not even a Cardinal fan, but dude you need to stfu. Like salty much?
Best batting song ever!!!!!!!!
What amazes me is that this song has been up on here at least 2-3 years and STILL people don't realize that they're singing about the Illinois River in ILLINOIS and not the one in Oklahoma.
At the end it when it says turnpike troubadoirs shows america map shows Oklahoma so its talking about the Oklahoma Illinois river
Trey Thompson these people are idiots. If im not mistaken the lead singer is from Tahlequah. And thats where the river runs.
Cole Teehee........well, I guess that makes me an idiot that thinks that you failed grade school geography...........just listen to the song......they refer to Pekin, which is in Illinois and on the Illinois River......they also refer to Beardstown, which is also in Illinois on the Illinois River (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beardstown,_Illinois)...........now, what else do we have to say that will convince you that this song is about the Illinois River in ILLINOIS?
Cole Teehee, just as an FYI, here's a bio about John Hartford, the composer of this song, who was born in St. Louis and worked on the Mississippi, Tennesee and Illinois Rivers.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Hartford
They are most likely from OK, does anything else really need to be said as to their inability to comprehend basic geography?
oh gee, i love this song + this is a great video too! good job! ... i heard it on 95.9 the ranch, the sound of texas! its true, youtube is now complete!!!!!
this is the best thing since waylon, go bless Littlefield, Texas
Gotta love when Illinois gets credit that isn't Chicago whitch nobody from IL claims. we gave it to Michigan.
My uncle is playing in the
TURNPIKE TROUBADOURS
Wish I could have found you fellows sooner I love music from Kentucky but I should have came to visit Oklahoma your great
Never herd these guys found them on TikTok haha the intro is what got me about 10-15 seconds I’m in
I just heard of these guys yesterday and I work on a towboat
Matt Carpenter baby
I just saw these guys play twice at Steamboat Musicfest, and saw them jam several times...completely kicked ass!!!
As far as the whole Oklahoma vs Illinois controversy goes, this song was around before these guys were born. They didn't write it. The song talks about the Illinois river in Illinois. I don't think there are barges on the little Illinois in Oklahoma.
what it's way too small
what Yeah elsewhere in the comments people are talking about cannoning the Illinois in OK. Sounds like a good time, but no one would be cannoning the Illinois river we know. Would get swamped by barge wakes without even getting anywhere close to the channel.
Not to mention they name check Pekin and Beardstown. Two Illinois rivertowns.
No barges for sure, but if you get a chance float the Illinois river in Oklahoma.
@@edwardofgreene I work on the Mississippi river in st louis. And I see people cannoe it in the summer time.
