  • Well guys it’s a lot more of a productive week as we crack on with the Cosworth engines, Issac finishes the lovely Morris engine to a great standard, but what better to let him loose on next but the Rover race engine, what could possibly go wrong?

    Done loads of head gaskets on K series engines, knew the bolts went right down to the carrier but never knew they held the mains. Also the are not timed at TDC when you do a cam belt, will be interesting seeing this on a semi stripped engine. Thanks Guys

    IIRC the Rover K series through bolts can be reused a few times, they stretch a bit each time they're used and there's a maximum length specified which if beyond that you bin them.

    • @ataxpayer723
      @ataxpayer723 Місяць тому +1

      For the best results, they should not be re-used. Torque-to-yield (TTY) head bolts are designed to stretch when first installed. Once stretched, they are not as strong as before. They cannot provide the same amount of clamping force and could actually break if re-used.

      Certainly good enough for a dummy build… also a new headgasket could be reused….

    Love that you are building a K Series, great little engine! I have a 244BHP 1.8 K-Series in my caterham (base was the same vvc as this) I have the same rods but Omega pistons, plus much more. Be good seeing the build. I guess that will be a 200bhp build? Many go for 1444 spec cams and need a fair bit of head work to get them in, so looking forward to see more from this

    What you are referring to Lee as yellow zinc is in fact the following correct nomenclatures; The silver parts are just zinc plated and the yellow parts are zinc plated and yellow passivated. If parts are green in colour then they are zinc plated and olive passivated etc. I feel that it is imperative to name parts correctly to show knowledge and not ignorance! Eg. Every time I hear a person referring to an internal combustion engine (ICE) as a motor, my blood starts boiling.

    Have you not thought about getting a small automatic blast cabinet and do your own zinc plating? We did at work and it's saved thousands getting it outsourced.

    How does the internal rubber hose covered by the wire sheath for the oil feed pipes survive the plating process? Will it fail early from being pickled in the hot plating-chemical process?

    I’m trying to understand the reasoning about the Rover K series “slide in” liners. Are they glued in position or not. It seems strange to me for the liners to just drop into place and that’s all they get for location,,,, 🔧🔧🔧🔧

  • @fc3sboy1
    @fc3sboy1 Місяць тому

    On the race rover why don't you run studs if ruled allow and make dummy spacers at the thickness of the head. Would save the expense of gaskets and bolts plus will hold the block together more consistent and stable for motorsport use

  • @chrisb8075
    @chrisb8075 Місяць тому

    K series shouldn't be rotated unless it's all torqued up. It feels odd because you shouldn't be trying to turn it. You'll find that after it's all torqued up there's a specified resistance needed to rotate the crank, measured off the front pulley.

    Hello Lee, couldn’t you use ARP head studs on the Rover engine instead of throwing away OEM bolts?!?

    • @ataxpayer723

      Wherever possible OEM TTY bolts should not be re-used. Torque-to-yield (TTY) head bolts are designed to stretch when first installed. Once stretched, they are not as strong as before. They cannot provide the same amount of clamping force and could actually break if re-used.
