- Come take and in-depth look at what goes into looking like a geisha! I went to AYA Maiko & Geisha Makeover in Gion, Kyoto, and had the most amazing time! I learned all about Geisha and had a makeup, hair, and kimono makeover! Afterwords I got to have a photoshoot as well as free time. It was the best day!

It’s actually Geika not Geisha. The latter isn’t even a Japanese word.
@@kilipaki87oritahiti true, but the people doing the tour tend to use the word “geisha” to describe the whole concept when they speak English. When they want to be specific, they’d use Geiko or Maiko, which is what I think you’re referring to.

But this is a Maiko make over, not a Geisha, they look much different from Maiko :) for example, maiko wear long sleeves, long obi, different hairstyle, many hair ornaments, all elements Geisha do not wear

Hey! Since tourists are banned from Gion are people still allowed to do this?
Yes! This studio is not on the historic geisha street and you’d still be allowed to go. Only a very limited part of Gion is off limits to tourists.

This is a Maiko not a Geiko/Geisha! Maiko are Geiko in training :)

@@froggie895 the problem is you’re confusing “geisha” and English word that describes the whole experience, and “geiko” the specific type of experienced geisha. The makeup you’re seeing in the video is a combination of both, some maiko, and some geiko, and really doesn’t accurately reflect either one specifically. Someone speaking English and referring to it as a geisha experience would be totally appropriate and it’s really only relevant to correct them if they’re calling a maiko “geiko.”
@tylerthomas5414 the woman in the video dressed and put makeup on similar to how a maiko does therefore she was using the wrong terms and I correct it. Geisha is used in some places in Japan Geiko is usually Kyotos way of saying it
@tylerthomas5414 also geiko/geisha are the same thing I just put the most commonly used terms there to make it easier

The woman can do whatever she wants, she will never become or be a real Geiko (Geisha). She wears it like a disguise, but she will never know what it really means to be a geisha. She is and a foreigner, regardless of whether she grew up in Japan or not.
Lol, it's rather obvious... 😂 She is just having fun. No one was harmed in the process. Place is making money, tourist can see how it feels, so whats wrong with that? Its like having opportunity to wear space suit - it won't make you an actual astronaut but the experience is unique.
