Great video! My left glute is way stronger than my right and I've been told my right lat is stronger and pulling my pelvis into rotation. I did this test and it showed exactly what you said. My right arm deviated out showing my right lat is very tight.
Hi, the right Gluteus maximus (Gmax) connects to the right latissimus doors via the posterior oblique sling and generally speaking....if the right Lat is tighter then it might be compensating for a 'weak' or inhibited Gmax because the Gmax stabilises the SI Joint through its attachment to the sacrotuberous ligament. Hope that helps, regards JG
I have the exact same issue, left glutes dominant, right glutes weak, right lats tight. When taking a deep breath to expand the diaphragms in all dimensions, the expansion of the ribcages would cause a dull tender sensation in my right lats.
Awesome video, so just clarifying, the initial test in the beginning, overhead shoulder flexion to test for overactive lats, the arms need to be straight or locked out. If the patient or client, can’t lock out the elbows and they shrug or elbows deviate, the lats are in fact tight ? Also if this is the case, testing for Anterior pelvic tilt and underactive Glutes would be important then.
If the arms go flat then pecs and lats are normal - if the arms are off couch then pecs are tight and if deviate laterally then lats are tight, regards JG
Im an rock climbing athlete and my lats are causing me big back and neck problems of being too tight. What is the best stretch I can I do at home or post exercise? I've tried the most popular and most wont cut it, even with foam rolling.
Thank you very much for this comprehensive test! I'm experiencing tight lats on the right side for a long time - what I've noticed is that when these muscles become tight, they give me a feeling of pulling down by the shoulder. Then my upper and middle traps as well as the levator work extra hard. Am I correct with this? I've been trying to find evidence on the connection between the lats-traps-levator but I haven't found much literature on this. Any information would be greatly appreciated!
The Lats is connected to the opposite gluteus Maximus, and this muscle might not be working as well so the lats ic compensating for that. I have other videos on glutes and psoas - so have a look at that as explained in there. Regards JG
Hi! Could you please clarify? what exactly do we do with inhibited Left Glutes in this case? How do we (practitioners) correct that or it is only up to the patient and the exercises?
Dear coach, In 1:02 you said that the right lat can be tight/short so it can inhibit gluteus maximus maximus in the other side through the posterior oblique sling, i did not find enough information about it Are there studies about this that the lats inhibit gluteus maximus? Is it something known because i did not find enough information about it.
So doing the technique to release the tight lats that compensating for the inhibited Gmax in the other side won't help at all ? I should get checked to work on the cause of that Gmax not firing? Thank you
Did this test and my left lat is super tight, which I’ve suspected. the thing is though I have a labral tear in my left hip inhibiting my left glute, the right glute is not inhibited at all. How come my left lat is the one that is tight but the right isn’t?
i have apt, severely tight hip flexors, tight lats, pain in my left rotator cuff and tight pecs. I'm in a heavy lifting job and experiencing pain in my upper back from lifting heavy objects. I assume this is due to my lat and pec tightness and rotator cuff weakness leading to poor posture but I'm wondering if you think my apt could be causing problems further up the stream or are the not linked?
I have a similar problem but a couple of other things going on too- namely my delts in particular posterior, have all but disappeared, and my shoulders pull forward and down. I’ve gone from physio to physio and they won’t even look at half this stuff- they assess that technically I can lift my arm so it must be fine. My armpits are tight, my bicep tendons are tight, pulling at the elbows making internal rotation of the forearms very stiff, and wearing a tight bra during weight gain during illness has dug indents into the top of my shoulders for 2 years plus stiffened virtually every muscle around the circumference of where the bra around the shoulder arm and back touches. It’s incredibly infuriating that men can go to a physio and easily take their shirt off to show what’s happening and limitations- women are left stuck trying to teach themselves how to self treat areas we can barely reach because physios are weirded out by anatomy especially if the patient is female and not fit, and touching the problem areas assists in getting the right diagnosis and prognosis- along with listening to patient feedback. Some don’t even recognise bra strap syndrome as a thing- lugging around heavy breasts for 30 years and expecting no backlash in several muscles, ligaments etc as well as developing compensatory patterns. We are left in the wilderness due to prioritising pettiness over patient health and recovery.
I have one question,by tight muscle do you mean a concentrically or eccentrically loaded muscle?Thank you a lot for the informational videos,John.Regards
Thanks for the comments and the muscle in question is generally thought of as 'short' and tight and hence limiting the range of motion rather than 'long' and tight. Hope that helps, regards JG
Dijan Marmullakaj Hi, if you have a long muscle then the antagonist will be short so my way of teaching is to ‘lengthen the short muscle and strengthen the long muscle’ regards JG
The technique is easily modified and sometimes i will get the patient to adopt a sitting position, especially if they dont like lying on `their side. regards and thanks for the comments, JG
Lats might become overactive and short and subequesntly tight and this can be caused through a tight psoas because of the inhibition effect to the gluteus maximus - then the lats compensate because it is part of the posterior oblique sling. Hope that helps, regards JG
@@JohnGibbons currently my upper back and middle back mostly on right side hurts a bit feel some pain in my transverse abmonial area groin and glutes . What should I do to fix this last month I have done all medical tests no problem showed up help me dr . 💫

@@JohnGibbons could you tell how to fix this? I’m sure of this issue. I’ve looked through your other videos but can’t locate a video about it. Thanks!
I have the glute problem causing Lat pain and severe tightness as well. How do I fix this? It's caused me years of pain.
I thought the posterior oblique chain went to opposites ? Left glute max to right lat?

Same here Michael John Gibbons is an absolute genius I love watching these videos
nice videos as always...but when the elbows goes out its also possible to have subscupularis or teres major tightness..
Yes thats correct. regards JG
awesome... this is exactly what I was searching for today!!!!
Pleased you like the video, regards JG

Wow felt a ton of relief after one round on each side

Probably not - you need to try and work out why the Gluteus Max might be inhibited and many reasons for that - regards JG
Are these techniques similar to Hold/Contract relax pnf?
METs are similar to PNF - regards JG
