I don't think this movie is about beauty and the beast. but loving somebody unconditionally. From her point of view, SHE is the beast (among human). When she met this fish she felt so appreciated and loved, that's why she loves him much, despite being beast or not. I don't think there's man out there who could love and look at her the same way that fish did. This movie got best picture because it represents so well how fucked up todays love is. Love nowadays demands so much conditions. Someone who's popular, overly handsome/pretty, rich, talented, big booty, big lips, etc in one package. But one, doesnt actually have a decent mind and heart. I'm sure most people find this stressful and tiresome, many still doesnt realize how these things destroys themselves so much.
I love how this move came from The Creature of The Black Lagoon when Del Toro was six and wanted the creature to have a happy ending. That’s so adorable I literally can’t hanlde it.
I actually kind of agreed with Del Toro, if that fish-man had better understand some human customs and society he probably would have gotten a nice human mate. Human or fish kidnapping is wrong
What I love the most about this scene is that when the creature hisses at Elisa when she tries to offer him the egg, she doesn't get scared and stays calm, knowing that she has to show him that she doesn't mean him any harm, especially after Strickland had abused him. BTW, the way he stands up in the pool at 1:31-1:38 is absolutely breathtaking. Elisa's reaction to that moment made it even more awesome. Sally Hawkins did an amazing job making her character be completely in awe of the creature.
Isn’t that stance amazing?! I know this comment was old but thought I’d share a fun fact I recently learned. Apparently del toro directed Doug jones to show the creature’s masculinity in his stance and mannerisms to display his strength in comparison to the more meek fish man Jones played in the bellboy films and compared to the more gentle creature from the black lagoon original! :)
"The Shape of Water" is an ingenious fantasy romance that utilizes cold war era elements to the advantage of its premise while subtly challenging our preconceived notions of established archetypes. Del Toro has an innate understanding of portraying the beauty of purity in all it's forms while simultaneously showing us the grotesque underbelly and brutality of what it is to be human. Director del Toro has done a wonderful job of tributing to Old Hollywood, monster movies, outsiders, and love that could only come from the mind of the visionary filmmaker. This was an excellent choice for winning Best Picture at the Oscars! Bravo del Toro! (:
This is masterful story-telling that asks the audience a question - a test, if you will. Is it possible for two people - against all odds and differences - to fall in love? If all you see is a lady in love with a fishman, you failed the test. If you can see beyond the novelty of the fishman, then you can see what Eliza sees, and you pass del Toro's test. Great fucking movie. Not as good as Pan's Labyrinth, in my opinion, but deserving of a view.
The Shape of Water is a classic movie, the story, acting, music, visuals, cinematography all were top notch. Such a fresh and enchanting movie, truly creative. Guillermo Del Toro created a stunning movie. One of my all time favorites. So happy it won 4 Oscars including the Oscar for Best Picture in 2018. 👏👏👏
Kevin Malone I haven't seen the movie yet,but generally I do like Guillermo del Toro' s movies, novels, television shows, etc. He is almost as versatile as Orson Wells (I said almost because unlike Wells Del Toro doesn't act). So,I am strongly inclined to like this film when I see it. However,I think the reason why so many of the comments are negative is because lately Hollywood has been aggressively pushing a extremely leftist agenda and doing so in a particularly arrogant way and many people have had enough preaching from a bunch of spoiled millionaires who have forgotten what ordinary life is like.
Such a good movie, really wasn't expecting that. Not something I would normally watch but it gripped me from the beginning and i couldn't stop watching and smiling then the tears came. I would recommend for sure. Beautiful story and glad I watched it.
Way better than the Disney version (1991 and 2017). Some stories you just have to treat in an adult manner and not sugarcoat them in children's cartoons.
I just finished watching the movie it’s really tense. emotional .exciting smart movie it has toooo many hidden stories and aspects in it .. i cried at the end because it was As i hoped ✨❤️
I'm okay with the others not winning, but I'm suprised Micheal shannon wasn't nominated for his role. He really did an amazing job at being the bad guy here, and made us all feel so satisfying when SPOILER The creature slices his throat after he comes back to life and basically gets the shit handed to him when he realizes he is a "god"
As someone who’s been used for only sex or money, this movie gives me hope that one day, I will find someone who loves me wholly as the Creature loved Elisa.
I thought this was going to be a nice family movie I was quite shocked by the adult content but the performances by Sally Hawkins and Michael shannon made it a interesting watch
The best part is that the asset isn’t CGI. it’s a beautifully sculpted costume and intricate makeup and it’s honestly so so beautiful. I love it when his scales light up and his eyes are absolutely stunning.
Thanks for the preview. I decided to watch it and thought it was a good movie of an interspecies love story. Love crosses all boundaries and limitations!! Or a god and a human love story!
Fun fact: Del Toro was originally going to call this “The Buoyancy of Turds” but the studio made him change it. Personally I think the original title was more accurate.
It's like some show you'd see on FX or something..no clue why the Oscars are praising it. I admit the colors and sets are attractive, but the story is a direct rip off from The Creature From the Black Lagoon(creature loves the woman in that movie, but get's shot up and dies at the end which in 1954 was a happy ending..ha)
I just left the movie theater. Now in my opinion it's a 7.5 out of 10. That's the best I can do for it and for me it was not an Academy Award winning picture even if it was. I seen 4 pictures that were up for best picture this year and in my opinion this would be number four. And I have to add this . The costume of this creature looked like it was out of 1950s Creature from the Black Lagoon costume. Kind of silly for this day and age.
The cleaning lady can enter a secure location with a one-of-a-kind creature that nobody's watching. And the creature is just there by itself like a the dog…and then she had sex with it,what are you crazy! What would she do if you leave her with the bonobo?
I wonder the same thing. I mean it’s kinda beautiful but not much else. Minus the fish fetish thing, it’s just an okay movie to me. Not sure why it won the oscars...
If you have ever experienced or realize how in this world you will Never ever find somebody who loves you for YOU. You will get it why this won many awards.
More like... When these days man demands so much from women that it's better for women to just love a fish who could love her as a whole just for being her.
Same director as Hellboy, and same actor who played Abe. People have been joking that the Asset and Elisa are Abe's parents. (Which they aren't, Abe was found in a tank dated back to the 1800s)
I just saw this movie last night. It's just another creature from the black lagoon. I can't believe it's getting any decent ratings at all. I thought it was kind of dumb.....a man in a rubber suit.
Paige Moor if you watch the movie you’ll realise her backstory. She’s actually a half mermaid from the beginning which explains the attraction. SPOILERS
I haven't seen the movie but does anyone actually know what kind of a creature that fish thing is? Like, is it a mythological creature or just something this movie made up?
Why does everything have to be fucking tied with politics? This is a beautiful film made by such a passionate director. del Toro was inspired by Creature from the Black Lagoon. He's been wanting to make something like this since he was a kid. Sure it has some political themes, but IT ISN'T about politics. Fucking watch the film first before you talk shit about it.
This is obviously and Old Gregg rip off and they need to cease and desist. Blatant rip off wins an Oscar while being 1/2 the masterpiece of the original. I’m literally shaking.
My only complaint about the movie is it didn't say FIN on screen at the end.

Agreed
*THANK YOU.*
I agree. A decent mind and heart sounds pretty nice to me.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder
That's so deep awe . Great job..

I am so pleased that this superb film won an Oscar® for best music score, director and best film. Muchas gracias, Guillermo del Toro.

As anti American it seems to me as a Republican I actually enjoyed this film and was able to ignore the politics
This is masterful story-telling that asks the audience a question - a test, if you will. Is it possible for two people - against all odds and differences - to fall in love? agree

Disappointed that Doug Jones didn't get nominated for his performance. He did a fantastic job as the Asset!
Clarissa Cota or Michael Shannon. He was great
What I belive impressed him was the how exquisitely she peeled that egg.
He was too good for it. All of the cast were.
So unrealistic, hard-boiled eggs never peel that easily.
I maneged to do it. Once.
@Neil Brown

I saw this last night with my parents and so far my favorite movie yet

Such a good movie, really wasn't expecting that. Not something I would normally watch but it gripped me from the beginning and i couldn't stop watching and smiling then the tears came. I would recommend for sure. Beautiful story and glad I watched it.
throw your pills away, they obviously do not help you in any way!
Yeah, great film.
Me too this best movie
BEST PICTURE at the Oscars. Something this one truly deserves. Hit like if u agree....
A better version of beauty and the beast 💓💓💓
Akriti Stha V
Actually I think it would make a decent reversal of Ariel. She's human here, and fallen in love with a merfolk, she's even lost her voice.
Be careful, acnes can appear on your tongue from such lies.
Way better than the Disney version (1991 and 2017). Some stories you just have to treat in an adult manner and not sugarcoat them in children's cartoons.
perverts!
Found this out on a WEBTOON comic. I don’t regret it.
I just finished watching the movie it’s really tense. emotional .exciting smart movie it has toooo many hidden stories and aspects in it .. i cried at the end because it was As i hoped ✨❤️
Farah.mubarak Mub how did u watch ? I mean any links ?
1:19 I love that egg
Congratulations! For winning the Oscars best movie of the year.😍😍
I can't get enough of this movie ❤️
Love this movie!! I hope they can do a part 2 with their babies.
I'm okay with the others not winning, but I'm suprised Micheal shannon wasn't nominated for his role. He really did an amazing job at being the bad guy here, and made us all feel so satisfying when SPOILER

Good God, I love Del Toro design for the Asset.
The best part is that the asset isn’t CGI. it’s a beautifully sculpted costume and intricate makeup and it’s honestly so so beautiful. I love it when his scales light up and his eyes are absolutely stunning.
Rose Everything you said in your comment is the reason why i love the Assets design. 😁👍
Personally I think the original title was more accurate.
i love this movie so much...
This is the origin story of Hellboy's water hybrid friend guy
What was that other movie you said Guillermo del Toro would be directing? I like his movies a lot.
Wonder if Universal is hitting themselves for not letting Del Toro do his version of the Creature from the Black Lagoon?
This movie won 4 Oscar
I will watch this for sure
omg i haven't watched this yet but it looks fantastic!
This should win best film. Director the lot , this is excellent film
Stewart Harvey-Wilson it did ....
This is honestly really creative. Strange, but creative.
This is far too sweet
Pleasantly surprised this movie won Best Picture
This movie is the new Splash
Love what i saw. Gonna watch it right away #withlovefromnigeria
BEST PICTURE!!!
Best picture of the year
Related to hellboy ?
Manas B nope but the guy that played the fish guy also played abe in hellboy
That’s immediately what I thought when I saw a preview for this movie a while back
What a movie.....
unpopular opinion alert: This movies doesn't seem half bad
How did she peel that egg so effortlessly yall
Hey, it's general Zod
Why is this getting so much praise?
My thoughts exactly
I think it's a great film, well directed, well acted and has beautiful sets.
Bing Sinatra It’s bizarre and promotes beastiality
It's like some show you'd see on FX or something..no clue why the Oscars are praising it. randombro89 You could say that about Beauty And The Beast.
BEST PICTURE BABY!
C'mon I couldn't be the only one who's here just to see the way she peeled the egg.....
True love
I'll never look at my Birdsye fish fingers the same way again
Best romantic movie ever
idi m maybe I will :) do you have a problem with that?
sorry girl, bad mood )
Sex with a reptilian. If only you knew why you were watching
Absolutely!
When General Zod, tell you to do something, you do it!
Wow man!!😍😍😍😘😘😘😘

is that ab? from hellboy?..looks very similar to that fishguy in hellboy movie
Mohammad Afiq
That's because both characters are played by Doug Jones.
Same director.
They are Abe’s parents
This comment section is cancer.
Just watched the movie it was great but there were noticable flaws. Still recommending it for the story..
There were too many plotholes, even scenes that could have not happpen should have made the story short.
The cleaning lady can enter a secure location with a one-of-a-kind creature that nobody's watching. And the creature is just there by itself like a the dog…and then she had sex with it,what are you crazy! What would she do if you leave her with the bonobo?
No - that's not what happened.
She had the decency to take it home with her first.
Mai Nem At least she had the decency not to batter it.
is this in anyway related to hell boy?
Is this linked to the Hellboy series, or does Doug Jones just really like playing fish people?
Doug Jones is actually a fish person, he has to put on a human suit for his other movies.
The all new: "The Fish Banging Movie”
AKA Grinding Nemo 🤪
aww that lil thing cute
the mute fish fucker is cute. True.
How could she peel the egg that way, what the heck? 0.o
SO, an extended movie about Abe Sapian...????
...why is this the best movie ? Um wtf?😐
ioanna1k7 7 is the best and period
Ivy Rock okay beastiality lover
I agree with Alex. Its what l was thinking the whole time while watching. Had'nt seen the trailor prior would of stayed away
I wonder the same thing. I mean it’s kinda beautiful but not much else. Minus the fish fetish thing, it’s just an okay movie to me. Not sure why it won the oscars...
If you have ever experienced or realize how in this world you will Never ever find somebody who loves you for YOU. You will get it why this won many awards.
the [fifty] shapes [shades] of water [gray] 😂
i could really go for some hard-boiled eggs right about now
I'm sorry but I just can't see this as a romantic movie LOL. It's weird! That thing looks like a reptilian demon
Its ok, it means that you are a healthy person )
Your comment's giving me a really bad haddock.
This is a romantic movie?! Yikes
Alex _Santoro_23 Right?! 🤣
omg
bc beauty and the beast hasnt been done before lol
Fish racist!
Well it won an Oscar so yea “yikes”
Can I offer you a nice egg in this tryin' time?
0:31 no her reflection in curved glass and this movie won Oscar!?
Andres Bonilla How did you know? :)
I get it. Women good; Men bad; (Men of color excepted of course, if the color is green.) Why this could be perfect for a 2018 Oscar.
More like... When these days man demands so much from women that it's better for women to just love a fish who could love her as a whole just for being her.
Egg scene had too many cuts. Didn’t set the mood appropriately
They made the black man look like a fool in this movie .probably get an Oscar for it to.
His race had nothing to do with him being stupid in the movie. Somebody needs to watch it.
thats just another triggered black person looking for any little excuse to make it seem like they are being oppressed.
Quasar Productions It's so annoying lmao. If they even watched the movie they'd know that it's anti-racism
Marie I didn't say stupid I said fool somebody needs to read my comment again
Marie hey I got a movie for you to watch it's called Marie and the Donkey.
Grinding Nemo..
Light Exchange means.
I'm your Principal....
Blue I'm blue..
Isn’t that the creature from Hellboy???
BIOSHOCK 😍
No one here is saying that this dude looks like abe from Hellboy?
Sancheezy i was about to say that
Sancheezy people have been saying that since the first trailer
Sancheezy it is Abe..The same actor from hellboy too
Same director as Hellboy, and same actor who played Abe. People have been joking that the Asset and Elisa are Abe's parents. (Which they aren't, Abe was found in a tank dated back to the 1800s)
Oscars baby
I just saw this movie last night. It's just another creature from the black lagoon. I can't believe it's getting any decent ratings at all. I thought it was kind of dumb.....a man in a rubber suit.
Severely dissapointed. I wanted to see them getting it on
Dissapointed also, I wanted them both dead!
They do.
are you sure??? )))
Free willy meets Beauty and the Beast meets District 9.....
Oh so he just happens to speak sign language and can be won over with eggs? No thanks
Why not watch the film lmao
Paige Moor if you watch the movie you’ll realise her backstory. She’s actually a half mermaid from the beginning which explains the attraction. SPOILERS
you must be a certain kind of special to put a spoiler alert only after spoiling a movie.
Marie because it’s a human, a fucking human, falling in a love with a ducking alien fish. It’s disgusting
It is alot better with actual context of the film. The romance is fitting to the messages to the movie.
I haven't seen the movie but does anyone actually know what kind of a creature that fish thing is? Like, is it a mythological creature or just something this movie made up?
Yes - it was captured in South America - the locals worshipped it as a god.
Definitely mythical - we would call it a Merman.
A river god

This movie does not deserve to win Best Picture
