From master story teller, Guillermo del Toro, comes THE SHAPE OF WATER - an other-worldly fable, set against the backdrop of Cold War era America circa 1962. I don't think this movie is about beauty and the beast. but loving somebody unconditionally. From her point of view, SHE is the beast (among human). When she met this fish she felt so appreciated and loved, that's why she loves him much, despite being beast or not. I don't think there's man out there who could love and look at her the same way that fish did.
This movie got best picture because it represents so well how fucked up todays love is. Love nowadays demands so much conditions. Someone who's popular, overly handsome/pretty, rich, talented, big booty, big lips, etc in one package. But one, doesnt actually have a decent mind and heart. I'm sure most people find this stressful and tiresome, many still doesnt realize how these things destroys themselves so much.

Facts
I love how this move came from The Creature of The Black Lagoon when Del Toro was six and wanted the creature to have a happy ending. That’s so adorable I literally can’t hanlde it.
I actually kind of agreed with Del Toro, if that fish-man had better understand some human customs and society he probably would have gotten a nice human mate. Human or fish kidnapping is wrong
What I love the most about this scene is that when the creature hisses at Elisa when she tries to offer him the egg, she doesn't get scared and stays calm, knowing that she has to show him that she doesn't mean him any harm, especially after Strickland had abused him. BTW, the way he stands up in the pool at 1:31-1:38 is absolutely breathtaking. Elisa's reaction to that moment made it even more awesome. Sally Hawkins did an amazing job making her character be completely in awe of the creature.
Isn’t that stance amazing?! I know this comment was old but thought I’d share a fun fact I recently learned. Apparently del toro directed Doug jones to show the creature’s masculinity in his stance and mannerisms to display his strength in comparison to the more meek fish man Jones played in the bellboy films and compared to the more gentle creature from the black lagoon original! :)
"The Shape of Water" is an ingenious fantasy romance that utilizes cold war era elements to the advantage of its premise while subtly challenging our preconceived notions of established archetypes. Del Toro has an innate understanding of portraying the beauty of purity in all it's forms while simultaneously showing us the grotesque underbelly and brutality of what it is to be human. Director del Toro has done a wonderful job of tributing to Old Hollywood, monster movies, outsiders, and love that could only come from the mind of the visionary filmmaker. This was an excellent choice for winning Best Picture at the Oscars! Bravo del Toro! (:
As anti American it seems to me as a Republican I actually enjoyed this film and was able to ignore the politics
This is masterful story-telling that asks the audience a question - a test, if you will. Is it possible for two people - against all odds and differences - to fall in love? If all you see is a lady in love with a fishman, you failed the test. If you can see beyond the novelty of the fishman, then you can see what Eliza sees, and you pass del Toro's test.
Great fucking movie. Not as good as Pan's Labyrinth, in my opinion, but deserving of a view.

Such a good movie, really wasn't expecting that. Not something I would normally watch but it gripped me from the beginning and i couldn't stop watching and smiling then the tears came. I would recommend for sure. Beautiful story and glad I watched it.

Kevin Malone I haven't seen the movie yet,but generally I do like Guillermo del Toro' s movies,novels,television shows,etc. He is almost as versatile as Orson Wells (I said almost because unlike Wells Del Toro doesn't act). So,I am strongly inclined to like this film when I see it. However,I think the reason why so many of the comments are negative is because lately Hollywood has been aggressively pushing a extremely leftist agenda and doing so in a particularly arrogant way and many people have had enough preaching from a bunch of spoiled millionaires who have forgotten what ordinary life is like.
So unrealistic, hard-boiled eggs never peel that easily.

The Shape of Water is a classic movie, the story, acting, music, visuals, cinematography all were top notch. Such a fresh and enchanting movie, truly creative. Guillermo Del Toro created a stunning movie. One of my all time favorites. So happy it won 4 Oscars including the Oscar for Best Picture in 2018. 👏👏👏

Good God, I love Del Toro design for the Asset.
The best part is that the asset isn’t CGI. it’s a beautifully sculpted costume and intricate makeup and it’s honestly so so beautiful. I love it when his scales light up and his eyes are absolutely stunning.

Fun fact: Del Toro was originally going to call this “The Buoyancy of Turds” but the studio made him change it. Personally I think the original title was more accurate.
As someone who’s been used for only sex or money, this movie gives me hope that one day, I will find someone who loves me wholly as the Creature loved Elisa.
Wonder if Universal is hitting themselves for not letting Del Toro do his version of the Creature from the Black Lagoon?

I just left the movie theater. Now in my opinion it's a 7.5 out of 10. That's the best I can do for it and for me it was not an Academy Award winning picture even if it was. I seen 4 pictures that were up for best picture this year and in my opinion this would be number four.
And I have to add this . The costume of this creature looked like it was out of 1950s Creature from the Black Lagoon costume. Kind of silly for this day and age.

I admit the colors and sets are attractive, but the story is a direct rip off from The Creature From the Black Lagoon(creature loves the woman in that movie, but get's shot up and dies at the end which in 1954 was a happy ending..ha)

Just watched the movie it was great but there were noticable flaws. Still recommending it for the story..

I just saw this movie last night. It's just another creature from the black lagoon. I can't believe it's getting any decent ratings at all. I thought it was kind of dumb.....a man in a rubber suit.

Why does everything have to be fucking tied with politics? This is a beautiful film made by such a passionate director. del Toro was inspired by Creature from the Black Lagoon. He's been wanting to make something like this since he was a kid. Sure it has some political themes, but IT ISN'T about politics. Fucking watch the film first before you talk shit about it.
