  • Here we look at Harris bipods and the difference between swivel and fixed models. The S-BRM bi-pods rotate to allow shooting even while rested on uneven surfaces.

    Well, the video may be 5 years old now but it just answered some of my questions enough to the point that I believe I am now ready to acquire my first bipod, so thank you for a great video. The swivel appears to make the most sense for my intended use at the range. I just purchased my first brand new, rifle, (always been mil surp) a Remington 700 5-R Stainless Threaded Gen 2. Lovely feeling 'aint it? Now to learn some about scopes. Thanks again from an old man north o' the border.

      Its funny i get to see this comment, always been a milsurp guy too and bought my first modern bolt action to try which is a Remington 700 5R stainless gen 1. Seems like birds of a feather flock together eh?

    There is also the standard model without the notches or swivel, and they have infinitely adjustable legs within their range and are also much much lighter. This is the model I used for years and have had zero issues . Let's face it, if you're making an accurate long range shot, you have time to quickly adjust them. If you only have three seconds, you're not making the shot at 600 meters or beyond anyways. I have had no issue adjusting mine on any surface specifically hunting hilly country, and appreciate the lighter weight, while carrying any of my rifles. To each their own. So many options definitely one out there for anybody.

    Most of the fixed versions have a compensation of the angle between the notches with a mechanism in the attachment screw assembly, but few shooters know this.
    1. reset the leg length
    2. unscrew the screw a little, align the weapon and tighten the screw.
    Time consuming? A little true, but it has been tested and works reliably. With a little practice, the correction only takes a few seconds.
    So why am I using a fixed bipod for Hunting when I have both? Because it is much lighter and narrower, the rifle does not lose balance on long hikes and does not hinder me while walking, which is very important to me, we almost always have enough time to adjust when shooting at longer distances.
    Last but not least, it is also cheaper.
    an alternative is carbon swing bipods, but I think they are way too expensive.

    Hinterland Outfitters has the swivel model for under $100. best model to use because some shooting range tables are not perfectly level and that can make a difference when trying to get the best accuracy out of your rifle during practice.

    You can also just shorten or lengthen one leg. . I’ve even just loosened the swivel screw a bit and have some chanting movement also. Not sure I see a feature that is worth purchasing another, more expensive, unit for. For ME, maybe if I wanted another for a different rifle, the old one broke, etc. but not just for that feature Just sayin.

  • @beniciomoldenado2315

    With the S model (swivel?) is it possible to tighten or lock the swivel feature. At times I may be shooting from a level bench and would like to restrict movement as much as possible. Other times, as you show in the video I may be shooting from an uneven surface so the swivel feature would be very useful. Can the swivel be locked?
    Thanks for a great, informative video.

    The information of the video in not complete. He´s not saying that with fixed notched legs bipods, you can adjust the legs very fast, in order to level the rifle, even if it´s not a siwel bipod.

    • @ironelement1127
      @ironelement1127  8 років тому +1

      +Petrus Aroesnosa The reason I did not mentioned adjusting legs was to avoid giving the impression it is an efficient way to shoot. It is very inefficient compared to the swivel. In fact, I would say it is 10X faster to use swivel than adjusting your notched bipod legs. Adjusting bipod legs is also not ideal because it only allows certain angle measurements with your notches. If your needed angle is between notches, you are still only a little better off than without them at all. I did this yesterday in fact with notched legs. Beyond the hassle of having to move legs up and down, which is time consuming, the angle was not quite right for my shooting position. Then when I moved shooting positions, I had to take more time to re-adjust the leg and that was very inefficient hunting coyotes which move quickly. I know that in the field, I always prefer the swivel over notched.

      Yeah that doesn't work when you are in a hurry shooting something out in the field. Nor is it efficient in any way shape or form. If you don't understand the meaning of it you need more time shooting in real time events. You guys who think you can use the notches in that way clearly don't do much field work. And do you mean the shadow on the hood? Because there was no scratch whatsoever.

[Quote] You should really UNDERSTAND that just because you get a new gun, truck and video camera doesn't make you an expert on this subject BRO. Time in the field? dude I shoot more than the average by probably more than you! Not sure but multi thousands of rounds per year. With a full reloading center and a collection of firearms that would make most drool? and have been using bipods in the manor in which I purposed on uneven terrain for many years and I'm here to tell you and all with a good pod that has a positive lock on its extensions it works like a charm. Further try the scratch doctor scratch remover it may with a little, WELL actually a lot of elbow geese get that scratch out of your hood. and I would suggest for the future use your tailgate instead of that nice shinny hood!!!! Oh and by the way Atlas, of which I own a few. Makes a way better bipod than Harris ever thought about making. With way more functional accessories than most companies. However if you want a bipod that will smoke the Harris on looks, functionality, and features, and are on a budget Check out the UTG TL-BP01or 02 or 03 fully Machined from aircraft grade aluminum with a very positive locking extension and a 360 degree swivel base and 5 independent locking positions per leg. But best of all its a very clean look for your rifle no exposed springs or stamped steel frame. Guys its worth a look! TRUST!

      +TheGoldenSaber I had the same thought... but a swivel would make it better for micro adjustments. Haven't used one yet but just a guess. I'm looking to buy.

    • @ironelement1127
      @ironelement1127  8 років тому

      +TheGoldenSaber You can lower one leg but that just puts you at a fixed position that is not level. It works if you have a surface that is perfectly lined up with the new angle of your bipods but if that angle is not exact, you are still off one way or another. Shane mentioned "micro" adjustments, and this is exactly what you find maybe be needed. The swivel can be used with any angle(within it's radius of movement) while having one leg shorter only works for a specific angle. Lowering one leg can be better than nothing, but it will more often than not, be worse than having the ability to use the swivel to find whatever angle you need. It also prevents you from then having one leg shorter on your bipods that you have to fix before going to a new shooting position. If you are active in the field, this time-save can be extremely valuable.
