As a full on metalhead... this is truly a masterclass in songwriting. Pure genius from the musical arrangement to the harmonies, absolute fire.
🤘🤘🤘
IT SLAPS SO HARD
I got to see legends of aussie rock, the screaming jets, play a spontaneous cover in a pub of Africa and it really would make a great metal song, especially if you got someone like iron maiden to play it.
@manna6618
As a life long metal head myself, I can fully agree.
This is a masterpiece, and a masterclass in songwriting.
Horns Up!
I know we take songs like this for granted, as we hear them all the time. It gives you a fresh perspective seeing it from somebody's new eyes.
This falls into the category of look what humans can do, pretty incredible.
This song was written in response to a severe drought Africa was experiencing at the time, hence the chorus:
_"I bless the rains down in Africa."_
"the moonlit rings reflect the stars that guide me towards salvation", powerful lyrics
This is my favorite song of all time. Out of all the songs ever, from AC/DC to ZZ Top, Africa by Toto is my most favorite song of all time. It is perfect in every way. From vocals to instrumentals. The whole song is beautiful. I will die on this hill.
these guys were some of the best session musicians in the industry for their time - you'd be amazed at the various music projects they worked on
What,like Dune?
Google Steve Lukather.
great to see that a young man can have this much fun with music from my own youth 👍
Music, pre-2000 painted a story for the listener to visualize. I mean, "...As sure as Kilimanjaro rises like Olympus above the Serengeti..." Nobody writes like that anymore. It's poetic.
Music like this is still being made. It's just not the mainstream. You can't listen to the radio, watch the VMAs, Grammys, etc. It's out there you just need to find it.
This song is so ... magical, all time favorite! Men at Work's "Down Under" has this same "vibe" to me, you'll love it for sure. (though that one's about Australia and the music video is like.... so cheesy it kinda of ruins the mystic vibe of the song, beware.) But more 80's african vibe?? You gotta check out Paul Simon's Graceland (from Simon & Garfunkel) "Homeless" and the song that follows it on the album "Diamonds on the Soles of her shoes" is a bitching combo. Look for them from "The African Concert" in 1987. He wrote an album with guests from the black mambaza, some traditional African vocalists and it's insane man.
“He just smiled and gave me a Vegemite sandwich”
I think of the song Midnight Oil - Beds Are Burning… extremely underrated song.
A MUST SEE/HEAR ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE cover of this song is,, Angel City Chorale "Africa"..TRUST ME on this one!!
I'd love to see you do Rosanna. Features Jeff Porcaro's (RIP) take on the Purdie Shuffle on drums.
💯
Best tribute song to a woman ever.
Absolutely love this song. These guys were all studio musicians that decided to get together and do their own thing. All great players
Whenever i come across this song, i always have to play it at least twice! Great reaction, and im glad i found your chanel ❤ new sub!
I have loved this song since i was a kid ❤
I'm glad you enjoyed Toto singing 'Africa'. Just excellent when it came out in 1982 (I was 22!!) Just fabulous!!! 💝💝💝
Because you wondered about the instruments used in this song:
Toto's "Africa" uses many instruments, including:
CS-80: A brassy synthesizer that plays the "call" figure in the song. It's also associated with the music scores for Blade Runner and Chariots of Fire.
Yamaha GS 1 digital piano: Programmed by Steve Porcaro to sound like a kalimba.
Drums: Bass, snare, and hi-hat.
Percussion: Congas, cowbell, shaker, and xylophones.
Guitars: Lead and bass guitars.
Other instruments: Xylophones, marimbas, and a makeshift walking stick with Pepsi bottlecaps.
The song also uses keyboards, acoustic guitars, and electric guitars.
Thanks for your insight on the instrumentation. The vibe is incredible here!
It's good to see people from all walks appreciate pure talent ...alot of artists just go for trends and they after money but there's some that take the music to heart
You are going to lose your mind when you hear the best Toto song - Rosanna.. it won the Grammy in 1983 for Record of the Year
This band and song took years to be vindicated. Originally fans loved in, critics bashed it to death, especially Rolling stone. They were so wrong, in every way. This song is an immortal classic.
It sure is, should be on everyone’s playlist. ❤️
Shon I’m really digging your music reaction videos. You pick up things in music & lyrics right away, and you’re entertaining with a lot of energy. I hope more a lot more people subscribe to you, because you’re on an elite level, and I should know. I have been listening close to hundred different music reaction UA-camrs since 2020.
Just discovered him so working backwards watching his reactions, love Toto this song especially.
Great song! Toto started in the late 70's & has been performing for over 40 years now. They mix all types of genres in their sound. They have had some great hits such as "Rosanna", "I'll Supply The Love", "Georgy Porgy", "99", "Make Believe", "Stranger In Town", "I'll Be Over You", "Without Your Love", "Stop Loving You", "Pamela" etc.
How many other songs can carry the lyric: As sure as Kilimanjaro rises like Olympus above the Serengeti. Not sure where to find it, but several acapella choruses have done this song, and they're amazing.
R.E.M were pushing an elephant up the stairs though
@@ProMooch 😊I love that song!
Beautiful song Beautiful reaction. I am transported by this. Thank you 😎✌️
You look like a really happy dude. Great reaction.
Sometimes I feel like I'm sitting by your side rockin out with you. You rock!! And you have SO much more to discover, my friend!!❤❤❤
all time classic 80s here! ♥
More classics for your "COOKOUT LIST:: The Dramatics "Whatcha See Is Whatcha Get",, Bill Withers "Use Me",, The Stylistics "Heavy Fallin' Out" & The Chi-Lites "Have You Seen Her"
Bill Withers!!!!!
This song gives me goosebumps every time !
Classic songs to add to your "COOKOUT LIST:: Johnnie Taylor "Who's Making Love",, Cornelius Brothers And Sister Rose "Treat Her Like A Lady",, Rose Royce "I'm Going Down"
Even though most of this song references parts of Kenya / Tanzania, it is like an anthem for all of Africa. Most South African expats get misty-eyed when they hear that intro, and it is a staple at "braai's" (BBQ for Americans)
The lead singer is John Williams' son; John Williams composed the music for movies like Jaws and Raiders of the Lost Ark.
No, John Williams son was lead singer later. This was David Paich in the verses and Bobby Kimball in the chorus
The chime sound is a marimba but played on a synthesizer. The flute sound is also on a synthesizer.
Released in 1982. Same year when members of Toto performed with the late Michael Jackson, RIP, Michael McDonald, the late Donna Summer, RIP, and Chicago. No wonder the members of Toto were working like a dog 🐕! L 🤣L
Members of Toto were on-demand musicians for studio 🎙 work throughout the 1970s and 1980s.
Written by David Paich. Same writer for Hold the Line. He sings the low notes. He is on keyboards 🎹.
Steve Lukather on the high notes and lead guitar 🎸
Great song. 👍
Suggested videos 📹: 1 Toto performs Rosanna 2 The Tubes perform She's a Beauty 3 Chicago performs Hard to Say I'm Sorry 😞
I believe the Yamaha GS-1 synthesizer was approximating the sounds of the steel drum and vibraphone, it was part of Steve Porcaro and David Paich's instrument set up
This outro bass lines ❤❤
For some current African music, I highly recommend Nneka, her song "Heartbeat" is amazing and deeply moving. Keep it coming, brother!
I bless the rains down in Africa !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I love so many of the songs you've been finding over the past few weeks. A lot of stuff I've always found value in. Thanks.
Your joy is so incredible to see. Love it
Listen to “I’ll be Over You”. My favorite of Toto.
If you want to listen to more African sounding music, you need to listen Peter Gabriel's "In Your Eyes". Particularly the live version from his Secret World tour. It's a great version of a great song.
One of favorite songs from the late 1970s wild bill
Straight No Chaser does an Acapella 12 Days of Christmas with a cover of Africa mashed in.
The release of years old SNC singing that back at University of Indiana went viral and led to recording and touring contract for SNC.
Hey Shon, Toto's Africa and Hold the Line are a couple of my favourite songs of all time. I would love it if you could listen to Wild Cherry - Play That Funky Music, or Bachman Turner Overdrive - You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet, or Free - Alright Now . Keep doing what you're doing!
More "COOKOUT LIST" classics:: The Blackbyrds "Walking In Rhythm",, Charles Wright & The Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band "Express Yourself" & The Undisputed Truth "Smiling Faces Sometimes"
And this unmistakable hit was the “B” side!
Oh, and the “little sound” is the Marimba.
You should check out Paul Simon with Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Diamonds on the souls of her shoes
Great reaction! Thanks for keeping great music alive!
A must on any road trip playlist
I was missing you! Glad to see you today. A little off the beaten path here buy I think you'd love the passion of ..Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child by Earl Brown and Harry Burleigh. They used it in Django..
If you are looking for more of this African sound, you need to listen to the whole Graceland album by Paul Simon. Boy in the Bubble, You Can Call Me Al, Diamonds on the Souls of Her Shoes are some songs. The album has many African musicians on it, most notably background vocalists
This was my favorite song by them as well.
I thoroughly enjoyed video bro
A little off the beaten path here but you should watch The Muppet Show with guest Harry Belafonte. The song, masks and costumes are based on traditional African music, and this performance is astounding!!🔥
Aside from the comedy and choreography that goes into the Muppet Show, the musicality involved in that show was amazing. From Dr. Teeth & the Electric Mayhem to the house orchestra to all the songs sung by the celebrity guests, the Muppet Show was brilliant.
I love your reactions toward this music I took for granted all those years ago, thank you... I will be watching more of your reactions for sure because you appreciate what you are hearing.
Weezer did a killer cover of this and "Rosanna" which you gotta check out next!
I have heard so many people's idea what they think this song means. Everyone different, For me it says: It's the call to life and adventure. But that's me.
Sitting here in Eswatini listening to this - tonight I will lie under the willow tree outside with my wife listening to absolutely nothing at all watching the stars twinkling in a clear African sky.
You’re gonna love “Rosanna”
Love this song. And the video is even better
I'm curious.Which song you've heard so far has been your favorite? You should put that as your intro song.
Such a beautiful song !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I don't think Africa is all that authentic of an "African" song but it is 100% authentic 80's which has a TON of great music like this, but the 1 song that probably sounds the most similar to this one is "Down Under" by Men At Work ...although it's really hard not to want to recommend Karma Chameleon instead just cause it's got such good vibes too
You need to get the first two total records every song every song is good to hear 20 good songs.
Another song from the era you might dig is Elven Bishop, Fooled Around And Fell In Love
The crazy part is they had no idea this would be a hit… they actually thought twice and were unsure about putting it on the album
Rosanna! Rosanna! Rosanna next please ❤
Toto is a great band. Thanks.....check out Home free..."when a man loves a woman". Very good also.
Great music right there!
GREAT music right? still hits me after all the decades
Toto is amazing. I’m guessing we’re segueing into Foreigner and Hall & Oates, soon. We need “Foreigner, Urgent” Hall & Oates, “Sara Smile” all of these have official music videos.
Weazer's version is spectacular too. Definitely need to check them out soon.
Take a listen of one of their 2010s live version -- it got even BETTER.
Love the song, first time watching the video 😊
Favorite song by them... bona fide classic. Gorgeous and evocative.
An artist has 6 speakers pumping out this song for eternity. No one is meant to know where it is
This screams 80’s. I love 70’s and listen to it all the time and every once in a while I’ll hear a song and think must be like ‘78/‘79 and was played a lot in 80’s. Some very late 70’s I would classify as 80’s sound. If I feel melancholily or a little down… I go up to 80’s music.
I’ve always liked the theory that this song is about a dude trying to cure the werewolf in him so he can be with this girl.
Great song.
nice RX channel Shon! my fav Toto song is 'Rosanna' (they are all a bit different than the other). Hold the Line is almost a tie with Roseanna for me, hard to choose as they are really diffn't.
Great reaction Shon! I just want to comment, I went looking and saw yes you did Boz Scaggs, Lowdown. Three members of the band and co-writer that made that album, Silk Degrees formed Toto. You’re going down the rabbit hole, Roseanna is a must also.
On African music a good sampling is from the Paul Simon album Graceland. Try the song Diamonds On The Souls Of Her Feet. It features Ladysmith Black Mombazzo on backing vocals and harmonies. Goosebump time. The entire album is 🔥lots of African influences on numerous songs.
I have a feeling you'll also really like the songs Down Under and Overkill by Men At Work
Love this song! Check out Leo Moracchioli’s metal cover version of Africa. It’s FIRE!
If you're down to hear more music that's infused with an African music vibe, I suggest "You Can Call Me Al" by Paul Simon.
I see in the 80's in Puerto Rico 🇵🇷🤌Olle Papi ,TOTO are MAESTROS of MUSIC,heve many MASTERPICE🎼🎩🎸🎶🎶Check out the music video 🎭🤌😈🎼ROSANNA❤️🔥
That little sound dude is a xylophone, believe it or not.
Check out Georgy Porgy by Toto ft Cheryl Lynn. It's an absolute banger!
Of all the random things on earth, the Columbus Crew plays this after every home win
Its a monster song, by some of the best musicians of the last 3 generations. 💯
I had a lot of their stuff back in the day. Many more hits out there for you to listen to.
Leonard Cohen - You want it Darker , check this masterpiece out if you havent done so, it was the last song that Leonard wrote before he passed away....
I love watching you listen to this music you should have been in my time with Music ❤🌹
I laughed when you said they knew they had a hit with this. It was the last song on the album and barely made the cut. The guitarist said he would walk naked down Hollywood Blvd if this was a hit. He didn't, even after it hit #1.
“That sound” sounds like a steel drum.
Good recation
The musicianship on this song is ridiculous.
Johnny Clegg is a South African singer
4:34 I am pretty sure that sound is either a real marimba or a synth emulation of a marimba. Many synths can do a pretty realistic emulation of a marimba. Considering how old this song is, it's probably a real marimba but I am not 100% sure to be honest.
Check the official video for the song, Wash it all away, by the band Five Finger Death Punch
alright...go for the Toto trifecta... "Rosanna" next
Listen to Bow Wow Wow I Want Candy the Burundi drum beat in it is killer... plus its a sweet, fun song. ❤
I swear, check out a live version of this.
