The biggest fail of them all - CONNECTING ONLY ONE 8x + 8x CABLE INSTEAD TWO SEPARATE. Way too many people don't get it. It's about rail power delivery
@@Sneakyboson the modular argument is simply not true. There are a huge amount of them that have 2 pcie cables. The defining factor is the stated wattage
Thank you dude! I couldn't get rid of the coil whine of my Rx6700 xt completely, BUT using 2 cables instead of 1 split cable from PSU zu GPU decreased the noise about 30-40% I'd say. And the tone is a bit lower and less annoying. Definitely give it a try, guys!
@@OptLabmust be the Asus Dual, for some reason the Asus Dual line cards, no matter which model, all have coil whine. You can check more videos on UA-cam about that.
I hate coil whine. And there is no just no permanent fix for it. You would have to physically desolder every inductor in the VRM on the Graphics Card and replace them with higher quality ones. My old Vega 56 Strix literally screams at very high FPS and 100% load. You know what is really funny: Different games produce different noises and different graphics settings also affect the noise. I could record the sound and analyze what my GPU is doing based on the sound haha
Exactly, that is due to LOAD haha. Thought, one my Corsair RM750X even my VEGA56 does almost no noise, while in my Aerocool PSU it screams like crazy. The PSU matters A LOT
Either I've never had to deal with it or my tinnitus is so bad that I _cant_ hear it. Usually the sound of the video I'm watching or games I'm playing drown out the 17+1 fans I can have all ramped up to mach 7. Probably isn't doing the tinnitus any favors tho.
@@AncientGameplays there are significant differences between powersupplies in quality. Some are made to meet the bare minimum specs needed to power a computer. Luckily most PSUs these days are good as long as you buy from a reputable brand. I choose a 600w bequiet and I dont think the noise would disappear if I buy a different PSU since there is zero coilwhine from the PSU itself and my motherboard.
@@brovid-19 fellow tinnitus sufferer here (life around loud racecars will do that 😅). I picked up a set of bluetooth earbuds (just some $30 skullcandy evos) and boom. Problem solved!
If you lock your framerate to your monitor's refresh rate, it can mitigate some coil whine. Typically coil whine is at it's worst when the framerates are completely insane, which usually is on menu or loading screens. Those 300 ish FPS on loading screens makes some cards SCREEEECH. If you can't get out of your PSU try locking frames down in Afterburner or Wattman.
I agree with you to great extent, but you didn`t mention few aspects ;) Great material though! 1. Not everyone would be able to hear the coil whine. If your hear lots of higher frequency sounds (like myself) you`ll be distracted most of the time if there`s any whine, even if there`s not much. I`ve been torturing myself with a GTX 770 back in the days - these were quite power hungry and even using a decent psu wouldn`t help. Had to sell it while the constant headache wasn`t doing me any good ;) Back to the point - if you know you don`t hear much of high freq, you can skip looking for a better PSU while you won`t hear anything. If you hear a lot of it - it`s possible the PSU change won`t cut it -> then on to next point.. 2. The coil whine differs greatly between the cards. It depends on the power delivery (both gpu-side and psu-side), while smoothening the current is key (that`s why the example of connecting two power cables was nice). If you experience lots of power spikes then you`ll probably hear the coil whine as well. However, the quality of the coils, capacitors and other elements are also significant. That`s why changing the card itself is a step you`ll probably have to take if you hear a lot of whine having quality psu. Of course I`m talking warranty cards - if they don`t have it, you can put some non conductive silicone over the coils - they won`t have as much space to resonate hence the sound frequency will be more acceptable. That`s an oldschool tip but works surprisingly well - though I haven`t used this solution for a few years. 3. Also having the card connected through a low quality extender cable won`t do any good for the power delivery. The PCI-E slot can provide 75 W of power (if I recall correctly) and it will use it in any mid to high end card. Again - if the current is not smooth and there are some spikes there`s a greater chance of whining. 4. In most cases you can eliminate the whine by using v-sync or fps cap. I don`t think many people are using this method nowadays, but it`s a possiblity. 5. Some games are generating lots of whine from the card even though you`re not using max power of the gpu. Had this problem with GTX 770/970 in CS:GO - even though I was using 30-40% of GPU power (low resolution, low details - I was CPU bound) and limited my fps to something like 240 (max in-game fps was about 400) the problem would still exist. Probably it`s due to the implementation of the source engine ;) Probably got some more but wanted to mention a few. Hope anyone would get something from it ;)
Hey man! So I just got a 3090, and a Corsair HX850. Before I had a 2080ti, and both GPU's make exactly the same noise. But I already have a Cordair Gold PSU so I'm not sure what to buy now. Any suggestions?

@@AncientGameplays I'm sorry, I confused my new PSU with my old one. Now I have a Coolermaster v850 Gold. I listened very closely and the PSU and I think also the GPU both have coil whine. What could cause it you think?
Interesting video. As an added tip, if you're suffering from excessive coil whine, try a different driver version. My GTX 1070Ti had an insanely annoying coil whine at LOW loads, which appeared after a driver update. Rolled back the driver and super silent again.
Have been playing multiple games on ultra on 1070TI everything was running great and smoothly, out of nowhere today on euro truck 2 I launch it my gpu start to coil whine ( even tho days before playing ets 2 didn’t cause any coil whine) so do you think it’s a problem from the game ? Or my gpu or psu ( cuz my rgb gets f*cked on the gpu )
@@Toulkun It's because different games load the system with different wattage. Which causes the components to vibrate at different frequencies, causing sound. It can be fixed, but it will void warranty. You can try to change settings for the system in terms of power delivery to various parts, also CPU has frequency shifting, a nd disabling power saving can also help. It sucks, I know. Got a brand new rig and both the motherboard cpu backplate / VRMs and PSU has this static noise garble coil whine, and my ears are fine tuned due to audio / music production work. You can RMA, but it will likely be there on the new product. Need to invest into high quality parts to have less likelyhood of it.
You should try using 2 power cables instead of 1 daisy-chained on your main build. The little coil whine that you have there might go away completely if you do that.
Great video man! My last roommate had an issue with the coil whine going into the audio loop of his motherboard, making me think it was a ground loop thing. Lo and behold, when he got a more efficient card (MSI 1070ti Duke vs Gigabyte 3070) the whine was gone.

I recently went from 850w to 1000w (both corsair) and all of a sudden im experiencing a lot more coil whine. Would expect the other way around since the new psu is more powerful?
The new PSU may still need a little bit more "burn" to be silent, or maybe the filter of the new PSU is just not as good, because having "more watts" alone means exactly nothing (some inner components might still be worse than in the past versions). But wait a bit more and see

Hey man, the reviewers (at least to decent ones) show around the same results i do (HB unboxed, Gamer Nexus), and in all of them RX 6800 > RTX 3070, even more with SAM
After watching the video twice im still kinda confused. First of all ive only ever had this issue with my 2 amd cards. But also it doesnt matter if i use a evga bronze powersupply or a asus platium it happens either way. Could it also potentially be a driver issue?
THANK YOU SO MUCH!! I got my rx 6800 and I had 2 cables plugged in, but one of them was under a different part of my psu's modular plug in for pci-e. My psu is the seasonic focus-gx 850 gold, which isn't a bad psu at all. My coil whine is basically gone.
@@Coroner88 no, I had it in pci-e which is strange. After putting both the cables in the same pci-e section (of 3 possible parts) I was able to get rid of coil whine. Nice video - very helpful, but what brand of power cables would you recommend? I have the same 750w PSU as you use in your main PC but the cables are flat and only use one for a double 8 pin GPU (Sapphire RX Vega 64 Nitro+ Revision C1). @@AncientGameplays Sorry, forgot to mention that most of the noise only happens when there is a high GPU load, my GPU didnt give that much coil whine with my previous PSU, which is whats throwing me off. I have a GIGABYTE GTX 1050 Ti (4GB) btw.
Small update on this regard from my testing, at the moment no matter the GPU (AMD or NVidia) it's a lottery, first you have to determine which component is the coil whine starter. My GPU is a EVGA 3080 XC3, and I started with a straight power 11 (yes a little on the short side) I changed to a Seasonic TX, PX 750, BeQuiet Dark Power 12 750(2021 model) and a Corsair RM750X. And from my experience my card is almost silent. In my ranking SS and Corsair are on the silent side with almost no to no coil whine. BeQuiet was the worst but there seems to be with the first charge of PSU, because there are a lot of complaints about whining and screaming under load. Oh and btw, 80+ rating didn't matter between the titanium and gold rating, because there was no difference in noise whatsoever. If not for the retarded cheap a.. fan (bearing noise...) in those PSU I would've stuck with them, but now it's a Corsair PSU Gold instead of a plat. But for now the result matters, even tho I wished there wasn't this aweful testing and checking involved. I rate this 2/10 user friendly.
Yeap, one thing is the efficiency and another one is the parts used in the PSU (caps for example). Corsair rm series have 100% japonese caps which are way better than the usual ones, and the filters are also better, hence the results
@@AncientGameplays indeed, fun fact a lot of them are claiming for Japanese 100% caps, but I feel like the QC on some PSU are lacking. Maybe some real world testing would get them closer to the point where they might figure faulty parts. I mean a test 30 or rx6000 and some load is not that much to ask for. But nonetheless after a lot of money spent in transit I can say I'm happy with the result. Maybe not 100% gone but at a point where I would say it's fine. And I'm very sensible for this kind of stuff. ;)

I can confirm this "fix". I have recently upgrade from 1060 aero to 3060 TI OC and was horrified by the loud coil whine of my new 3060 TI. So much so that I got a "be quite silent base 802" case to try and keep the noise level down a bit. It worked, but coil whine was still very noticeable even when gaming with loud sound. My pc has an older Fractal Design 1000W PSU, and it was making too much noise and I wanted to change it out for a while. So I bought a new RM650 PSU and installed it in my PC. I was pleasantly surprised how much the fan noise of my pc had gotten from changing the PSU, but even more surprised when running my first game. The coil whine is GONE..... Like so quiet now that I have to run a stress test, open the case and put my ear right next to the card to hear any coil whine at all. And even then it's mostly overshadowed by the fan noise. I was blown away and can now enjoy gaming with no distracting noise from the PC :D A good PSU can really make a difference...

I hate coil whine.
And there is no just no permanent fix for it. You would have to physically desolder every inductor in the VRM on the Graphics Card and replace them with higher quality ones. My old Vega 56 Strix literally screams at very high FPS and 100% load.
You know what is really funny:
Different games produce different noises and different graphics settings also affect the noise.

Coil whine appears when the GPU gets loaded, it has to do with power consumption also :D
Absolutely 100%
By locking the fps to 60 for example you reduce the load on the graphics card.
This worked for me on a sapphire fury oc+ edition
Sure sure, but what if you crypto mine?
@@IItsIgor underclocking and undervolting SHOULD bring the noise down.
The fact that you have freakin cactus inside your pc is absolutely poggers LMAO
Hehehehe
I agree with you to great extent, but you didn`t mention few aspects ;) Great material though!
1. Not everyone would be able to hear the coil whine. If your hear lots of higher frequency sounds (like myself) you`ll be distracted most of the time if there`s any whine, even if there`s not much. I`ve been torturing myself with a GTX 770 back in the days - these were quite power hungry and even using a decent psu wouldn`t help. Had to sell it while the constant headache wasn`t doing me any good ;)
Back to the point - if you know you don`t hear much of high freq, you can skip looking for a better PSU while you won`t hear anything.
Probably it`s due to the implementation of the source engine ;)
Probably got some more but wanted to mention a few. Hope anyone would get something from it ;)
Damn, that0s a lot of text xD
Hey man! So I just got a 3090, and a Corsair HX850. Before I had a 2080ti, and both GPU's make exactly the same noise. But I already have a Cordair Gold PSU so I'm not sure what to buy now. Any suggestions?

@@Toulkun It's because different games load the system with different wattage. Which causes the components to vibrate at different frequencies, causing sound. It can be fixed, but it will void warranty. You can try to change settings for the system in terms of power delivery to various parts, also CPU has frequency shifting, a nd disabling power saving can also help. It sucks, I know.
@@AncientGameplaysDo you think giving 200€ for a white psu like rog 850 gold is worth the money?Seasonic is building them but is it worth spending 200 bucks on a white looking good psu for only 850w and gold certification or should I go with seasonic9(black) 750w gold at 140€ idk im kinda confused.Another question I wanted to ask you is that beside the fact I know you are mostly an amd fanboy,I had ryzen 5 2600 and I decided to change to intel (i7 10700k for the sake of money rather than going to an amd 5600x which would cost a bit more with less cores and threads)so I picked the vfm value this time...Do you think It was a good option for 330€ (i got the marvel's version) real price in greece is 315€ for the regular one...I'm telling you that cuz the new intel gen4 pci is coming (i7 11700k) but i wasnt willing to spend more than ~300 to a cpu for what I do, I think it's more than enough...I hope they are not costing like 350 cuz that would be really unlucky....Anyway glad to see a response from you and tell me your thoughts...You will surely help me!
@@padazop gold certification itself doesn't matter much. But yeah, any PSU over €140 should do it...it will literally last you years and years...
@@AncientGameplays do you think 10700k (i7) was a good choice 2021? for 300bucks? compared to 5600x 350+ and less cores/threads?
Do you think too many watts could be an issue?
My new build is estimated to use 534watts and I bought the a Seasonic GX-850 gold.. should I go down to 750 or is 850 fine?
Should 5700xt owners keep updating to latest gpu drivers? Do you think that we are getting anything when it comes to performance gain? I'm on 20.11.2
Just in some scenarios maybe, but not overall
Can you tell me the frequency and voltage of your Ryzen 5600x? Next week I'm going to have one and I want a starting point for guidance. Thank you!
Use curve optimizer
@@AncientGameplays And did you do offset? or only activated pbo and the curve?
My pc makes the exact same noise that your test build does, except my pc crashes and restarts itself whenever I open any game (I’ve tried all manner of games in terms of graphically demanding games and ones that aren’t) do I need to replace my psu?
That restart from unstable ram oc (even xmp) or a bad psu yeah
Thanks bro , not disappeared but reduced the noise a lot
wait isnt coil whine a rattling? my psu makes sounds like its fan is brushing against metal when the load gets high and if seen the fan spin without that so i know its nothing physical touching it
I use a single fan 2060 super with a 400w power supply, should i upgrade my power supply to stop the coil whine?
You should upgrade your PSU anyway....400W is just too low...never cheap out on a PSU, get a good one and it will last you years and years
I have the RM650x model and XFX 5700 XT Thicc 3 Ultra. I can sometimes hear some coil whine while scrolling through a webpage and almost never in game. On very rare few occasions I might hear it. I checked the PSU box and it seems like there are only daisy chain PCIE connectors. I could use separate cables, but it might ruin the aesthetic look. I'm open to hear other opinions on this. Should I forget about the aesthetics and use separate cables for my GPU or keep using one daisy chain cable as I were already?
Hey man, 650X for a 5700XT system is not that much at all...i would look into a better PSU
mine is 6600XT, that only need a 4 pin power cable, my PSU is corsair rm750x, any suggestion for solution to get rid the coil whine?
There's no such thing as getting rid of it if it is caused by the gpu components, undervolting will help, but it will still be there
Should I use 2 2pin cables To reduce it?
@@aswinpanembrama8043 No, not really
@@AncientGameplays should I change the PSU with multi rail PSU? Or I just make my GPU running in stock not OC mode?
HI
I have the same sound excatly .
gpu : Nvidia GTX 1070 8GB
psu : cooler master bronze v2 650 - 230 V
idle gpu power 9-15 whatts
idle gpu voltage 0.7 - 0.8
gpu power while gaming 1230 - 140 whatts
gpu voltage while gaming 1.0 - 1.1 volt
so it looks every thing normal but I still have the whine sound
I could not put two cable, any another advice ?
not sure if this is related, but I get massive screen flickering and it even turns black if I try running my 7800xt at 165hz on my 165hz monitor. I have my gpu connected with 2 pcie connectors split from the same connection. It goes away if I set it to 144hz. On the other hand, my 3060 could handle 165hz with no issues although it uses just one 8 pin power connector. Do you think this is due to not using two separate 8 pin connectors?
I have an rx 6800 xt, and a msi tomahawk 750w gold psu, full modular, and i have coil whine. Should i change the psu? Its not enought? Using 2 separate clables for it.
I've tried 2gpus so far. Sapphire pulse 7900xt, xfx merc 310 7900xt and now I have Sapphire nitro+ 7900xt. Also tried 3 different A tier PSUs - xpg core 850W gold, Msi a1000g 1000w and now seasonic focus 850W. Tried 2 different mobos (gigabyte elite ax and msi tomahawk b650)
Still fcking coilwhine :(.
However I heard something about burn-in with running unigine benchmark for few hours straight. Do you think it can fix that?
Might be from your motherboard as well btw. Still all cards will coil whine to some extend unless you undervolt them
@@AncientGameplays Having coilwhine on 2 different in row would be really bad luck. I haven't checked my electriciciry at home but that would be too bothersome. Gonna buy some IEM headphones and call it a day.
I tried undervolting as well and it didn't help that much. The only thing which show significant improvement was FPS lock kr underclock. Kinda unfortunate solution because I bought high end gpu for high end perfomance and not for perfomance of low end card🤷
I know this isn’t a pc but I got a ps5 with coil whine and can only hear it if I stick my ear to the console so you think I should wait until the summer to replace it
Coil whine is "normal". From what i heard that is quite normal in the ps5
I can clearly hear the coil whine coming from my GPU. Does this mean that it's only the GPU's fault or can be also the mix of both like you said on the video? Also the recommended wattage for my setup is 800W while I have a 1000W PSU (Corsair RM1000X). Should I try to upgrade to 1200W? The coil whine is terrible, I can't tolerate it.
It may be your card model that sucks, or may also be your psu. The wattage doesn't matter, the filter does, also, the motherboard matters as well
@@AncientGameplays Hey I'm back. So I just got a brand new PSU - asus rog strix 1000w - and the coil whine remains. Looks like it's the gpu's fault in my case (asus rog strix 3070 ti). Sad, dunno what to do now. Maybe RMA it
Im having a coil while too but unsure where its coming from. Even when my pc is in sleep mode, i could hear it so i assumed its coming from my PSU? Correct me if im wrong, thanks
So i take it if you only have one 8 pin on gpu thats not split it means get a different psu ?
hii, im using bitfenix whisper 750W, first i use 1 cable split to 8 pins then i try 2 cables, the result is 2 cables smoother but still i can hear a little bit coil whine, its dangerous? thanks
i have a brand new fighter 6700xt and i have coil. My PSU is a RM 750 Gold corsair. I used two separate cables but there is coil. Should I return this gpu for a new replacement?
I have simillar thing with PSU, GPU seems quite, PSU make different noise than your in the video its still like electrical vibrating just like bee and its so quite i cant hear it normally only if i get very close to the PSU i hearing it, its like this from when i bought it so 1 year or so and i didnt had issues in performance or any other type of issue like unstability or whatever, i guess it gonna be fine to stay with it ?
It is fine, just annoying
so i have a 6900xt and 5600x. whenever i start assassins creed odyssey or origins, i hear the coil whine beep 6 times very loud and then pc shuts down.. My psu is an xpg 650w gold. (i can run pretty much any other game). Only happens with assassins creed. Would you recomend changing PSU?
Yeap, you're pushing the psu a bit there I believe. Also, it may be a cpu or ram instability
@@AncientGameplays thanks for your reply! I’ll let you know my results. If it doesn’t work with psu I’ll change the ram. Grazie mille
But the importat question, is bad for quality in terms of life component ? my rx 570 do thats songs :(
Watch the video, you'll have your answer :D
I see all but You don't talk about if is good or Bad for the gpu
what about MSI MPG A850G, will it have any coil whine ? do you recommend it ?
Dont buy msi psus lol. Get cooler master, corsair, seasonic, etc.
Thanks for your advice man, do you recommend Corsair Rm850e@@AncientGameplays
What's the name of the song playing during the Patreon outro?
Will a crappy power supply also cause pc crash on Nvidia rtx4070
I use Corsair RM850x 80 PLUS Gold with my 5700xt red devil and coil whine is pretty bad. Will try to power gpu with 2 cables instead of 1 as you advised, just wondering would undervoltage your gpu helps with this too?
it having gold efficiency doesn't automatically mean it is "good", just that is is more efficient
My PSU makes coil whine. However its got the eco switch so when the fan is off it makes no sound. I guess that means it is my fan on the psu that has the issue. Is there anything I can do to fix that? Its not insanely loud cause it only comes on when I game and I use headphones anyway.
COil when won't damage anything, it is basically static caused by the components, they only way is to change those components or reduce the power load
My pc is screaming ( I think it's the psu) when playing games but i only have integrated gpu. so its possible that coil whine is in psu alone? if that's the case is there any solution to this. thank you.
Yeah, most likely psu
Hey I saw you last video about the chip driver, should I install it even if I don't have screen issues?
Btw what case is that?
always install chipset drivers
I have this problem after 2 days my 7800xt from asus start make noise. Try every thinks but don’t help :( maybe change to another brand, what do you think.
I've just built a PC 3weeks ago. I have new MSI psu 1000w pci 5.0 atx 3.0 and rtx 3080 ti vision. It started to coil whine after 1 or 2 days and I'm not sure how to check it if its psu or gpu. any advice ?
This is good video and people deserve to try if they connected two pcie 8pin connectors with one power cable with a splitter or with two separator cables. I remember I heard very loud coil whine with my 2080 Ti when its two pcie 8pin connectors were connected with only one power cable with a splitter...
I have a corsair HX1000 Platinum with a Sapphire Nitro+ Vega64 and when playing games it screams coil whine. So bad PSU or?
I'd say it's probably the vega
~ Use a separate power pin cable.
~ Try dampening your case
~ Putting thermal pads over inductors coils and pressing them with Heatsink, Waterblock, or something else
Being 1000w doesn't mean much sadly and older psus suffer more (even more on high loads), but considering the insane power draw of vega 64 i assume coil whine is "normal"
I’m not sure what is wrong with mine, but I just added cable extensions and now my pc is making this weird buzzing sound, can you help me?
What did you just add? Thats right...
@@AncientGameplays it’s weird, it was just doing it for awhile and now it randomly stopped
Edit: nvm it came back again
I'm having this problem using an RTX 4080 asus tuf OC with an Asus Tuf 850W power supply, it wouldn't be a component quality problem, correct ...
Does the psu give you coil whine without the GPU connected on the test build?
iy shouldn't. neither in desktop
Good info. You remind me a bit of Peter Sagan :) I sadly got a lot of coil whine even after undervolt in MSI on my 4070ti tuf oc.
