Honestly I can agree with that sentiment, the rest of the build looked better with the added details, but the hinges gave it a bit more of weight and presence. Now we have the handles problem from the sides on the back (It looks baron, and has some holes you need to fill with nothing). PD: If you already fixed the hinges being to loose by closing the whole thing shut, don't downgrade it by taking away details.
You make a good point about the hinges. I wasn't fond of the overbulk of the first hinges, but I agree that completely hiding the hinges makes it look a bit too barren. I may take another crack at it in the future to find a happy middle point :)
@@boxofscrapeasy way to make it better would have been to at least use colors that match the Mimic itself, as the light gray feels out of place for the original, or even use a gold/yellow color.
I dont know if itll look better, but you should be able to fill that gap, and have the same range of movement if you offset the fulcrum point of the hinges away from the chest by 1.
If you wanted to fill in that gap around the back between the hinges you could replace that tile with some cheese slopes, ideally 3 2x1 dark gray slopes
I thought you were talking about under the hinge joint. Removing that one stud underneath would allow a cheese slope there. Not sure how much it’ll open though.
The bottom jaw and the handles actually make this less accurate to the official mimic artwork, which neither has handles on the side nor does it have a protruding 'wood' jaw. I do really appreciate that your design can fully close and lock into place.
I think I prefer the older hinges tbh, they didn't look the best but they added more depth to the back of the mimic that making them flush kinda ruins and since you added more depth to the rest of the design it really stands out
The only thing about the old tongue is that it can hold a die so that it's just visible when the chest is closed. Personally I really like putting a d20 in there, though the mouth not closing properly with the tounge out bothered me a lot too
Not gonna lie, I do kind of prefer the slightly open box when the tongue is out because the tongue out is an open mouth. I like these upgrades for the most part, though.
The big hinges kinda fit that it's suppose to be an older style of chest but the flush back is nice for those who'd prefer it. Making it lock shut and adding handles are big changes though, those are definitely oversights on LEGO's part.
I like the chest that came in the Harry Potter Hedwig Privet Dr. set . Filled in the top to make it smooth , wanted to make side handles higher and use smaller connections on the inside of the top lid
Personally i really like the chonky back hinges, so for any friends who wants a alternate fix to the single stud and likes the chunky back, you could replace the hinges with their ratchet counterparts
One small critique. For the back where the hinges are, couldn’t you replace the three 1*6 gray plates with a 1*6 gray brick then put a 1*6 gray tile on top to fill that gap? I could be wrong but I think that would be flush. Maybe one micron off?
But do the plates ever pull off when you open the lid yourself? They always did that to me whenever I tried doing anything like this, where it's just a couple studs surrounded by tiles being lifted.
I feel like the hinges should stay as they were in the set originally, or at least stay close to the same to look more like a DnD mimic, and have the handles be changed to be ring ones as I'm only seeing the same mimic either have no handles or ring handles
Just experimented with metal dice. It held up nicely to the twist, turns and jumbles of tossing it in a bag of supplies and shaking it around. And the lid held shut when holding it upside down, however it did not however withstand for more than five seconds of "spray paint" shaking it upside down while just holding the bottom. I would say pretty good for travel, not good if you put it inside a cement mixer.
@@boxofscrap Then I might buy the set and apply the modifications presented in this video. Thanks for testing it out, I just wanted to know because I've always liked the weight of metal dice.
I dont really agree with you on that tongue. "Awful angular" makes it dynamic and cartoony. Yours look like a bookmark-tongue, lets say from the Harry potter enveloppes. Not giving the same vibe! Love the other upgrades nonetheless
There is not a plural form of Lego. Lego is the name of an individual company. Plural for Lego brick is Lego bricks. Plural for Lego set is Lego sets. Plural for Lego is like plural for me or plural for you. It doesn’t make logical or grammatical sense.
Original hinges are obviously superior design. They are better looking cosmetically opposed to the gap you created, (makes me wonder what bothered you about the open mouth) and have a more similar appearance to what you expect from fantasy chests. You call the original hinges “bulky” which wouldn’t really be an adequate criticism in context, since you went out of your way to bulk out nearly all your other additions to create depth or some other reason. It seems you simply moved all the errors you saw on the front and sides to the back for no reason and acted like you improved that section. Almost like you took a look at all four sides and decided each side needed to be changed regardless of whether the changes were improvements. I digress there was clearly more attention to detail, and consideration for function and form in the original hinge design as opposed to your edit.
Honestly I prefer the original hinges but the other upgrades all REALLY make this set look and function way better

Looks great but I'm an inherently lazy man. If I update mine I'll probably skip the hinges.
Yeah, the hinges were very intensive 😅

I'll have to give that a try! :)

You were doing so well until the hinge replacement...
"Constantly bleping mimic" is such a cute vibe

that’s the cool part of lego, your totally entitled to your own opinion
love you solution and creativity to this problem. Really dig the persona and well-timed humor can't wait to see more!
This is awesome, would love to see a jumbo one that could hold 4x6 index cards to use on a desk.
That would be amazing!
Index cards... ppl still use them?
That being said, is the box big enough to hold a deck of MTG cards?
@@inkermoy 3X5 and 4X6 is a very common size for many cards too, like playing and tarot :) I said index cards as there easy to pick up and reference.
The last time I asked someone "how much does extra tongue cost", I got slapped.
I like your solutions to several problems with the box. Frankly though I like the bulky hinges on the back.
Really cool upgrade! Personally, I'm fine with the original, but it makes me happy to see mocs
I mean, protruding hinges is accurate to the chests I think?
Appreciate you editing in those two extra grey 1x3s. Thought we wouldn't notice ❤😅

Excellent modifications, though I'd keep the original hinges. Well done!
To answer the question in your description, it'd be intelligence check followed by a dexterity check
Haha thank you!
You rolled for intelligence and got a 20! now THAT is a good addition to a dnd night!
I think I like the red tongue better, great job!
Thank you! :)
I personally like the blue tongue, but to each there own. That being said the red ver. is a dope solution if you want the mouth fully closed.
I like the chest that came in the Harry Potter Hedwig Privet Dr. set . Filled in the top to make it smooth , wanted to make side handles higher and use smaller connections on the inside of the top lid
That would be an amazing way to make a mimic, and much more widely available as well! Great thinking :)
less than a 1000 subs?! that’s madness! you deserve a lot more man 🙏
I liked all of it but I prefer the old hinges
Personally i really like the chonky back hinges, so for any friends who wants a alternate fix to the single stud and likes the chunky back, you could replace the hinges with their ratchet counterparts
The new version looks like a silly cat who sticks his tongue out
Keep up the good work, man :)
Came for the lego builds, stayed for the top tier humor and editing
Hi, do you have a parts list for this i can paste into bricklink? Great video btw, great style to it! 😁
One small critique.

Eeeeeeh the red tongue looks better yeah, and the studs on the front to make it close and stay closed were good but that back was fine the way it was.
Honestly I prefer the original hinges, but the rest of these are great!
Love the video still really want the set though
Cool, now make a little elf mage that gets stuck in the mimic. (Frieren: Beyond Journey's End reference)
do the 1x1 studs on the corners always prefer to stay down with the base, or does the lid ever pull them up when you open the chest?
I love this video so much especially the completely out of focus montage lmaoo
But do the plates ever pull off when you open the lid yourself? They always did that to me whenever I tried doing anything like this, where it's just a couple studs surrounded by tiles being lifted.
9:09 I think I prefer the hinges, but besides that I like all your changes
Very cool!
I would swap the 1x4 and 1x1 stud at 5:07, will be less strong closed, but also easier to open again.
Супер! Было бы здорово увидеть улучшенную версию красного дракона из того же набора по DnD!
I feel like the hinges should stay as they were in the set originally, or at least stay close to the same to look more like a DnD mimic, and have the handles be changed to be ring ones as I'm only seeing the same mimic either have no handles or ring handles
If it wasn't so expensive, I'd absolutely get one ($130+ is just to much).
Prefer the original hinges. New ones look really weird. Like the other mods though.
Do you have a parts list
to answer the video's description question: roll Craft(legos). with advantage, evidently.
4:06 flapjack reference I hope lol
I men, The official D&D mimic image doesn't have handles either
Why did you keep the blue bottom plate?
Now the back looks flat. Pleas add a singular plate. Just for texturing! Looks great otherwise.
Make so it can change from a regular chest to a mimic
I do enjoy the update you've given to this four eyed fellow, however I'm not totally sure it would stay close if you were using metal dice.
If I remember this evening I will test it out for you :)
6:29 what’s with the photoshopped 1 by 3s?
EDIT: 8:46 oh
Yes!!! Thank you so much for pointing out the "s". I may just be being petty, but "Legos" makes my skin crawl
great vid
10:00 when she was alive.
this is how i'd fix my mimic box! IF I HAD ONE
I like the blue tongue more
I just dont like it completely closes still, theres this big gap in the back
I..LIKED IT! Sorry, I get overexcited for Lego improvements.
I thought the mimic tongue was red?
2:26, Fixed!
please invest in a tripod for your desk
terrifying
Why not just spray paint the red tongue to a blue tongue?
do you reply to everyones comments?
Only sometimes!
Surprised by LEGO's shoddy work on this one

Lego dice block tm

Muh outdated roleplaying game
This is sad. Not your conversion but the lego design
0:35 hey. What’s a “Legos” you built this out of Lego instead.
I really do not like your "fixed" hinges. They may function better, but I honestly think they look worse.
I prefer the original sorry ❤❤❤
