Max and Sam speak unedited for over 2 hours about Doctor Who. Along with a slideshow prepared by Max we see them go through the ninth doctor (Christopher Eccleston), Rose (Billie Piper), Martha (Freema Angelina), Donna (Catherine Tate) and tenth doctor (David Tennant). If you can't be bothered to listen to all our thoughts, the ratings are posted below.

For me, 'Midnight' is the scariest thing doctor who has ever done. I just think it's pure genius. I love how you come out of the episode literally knowing nothing and it bothers you, and it never gets resolved. You never see anything, all you know is that it fucked the doctor much more than most aliens ever manage to do. Just the level of genius of literally having one guy in the cockpit see something, and you don't even see it. The planet is scary, the monster is scary, everything is just good.

Agreed. It's not even that the monster is scary on its own, it's how much the doctor loses control, and can't fight it, that is the scary part. And as you say, you learn nothing about the alien, just that the doctor barely got out and was actually traumatised.

Agreed! Currently doing a full rewatch of New Who since it first aired, and as of the end of Smith's era it's one of the three episodes to make me cry. The others being Family of Blood (Tennant REALLY sells John Smith's confusion and bravery at having to sacrifice himself without really knowing why) , and of course, Vincent and the Doctor. All of those episodes are at least 9/10 for me for eliciting that response.

Ecclstone, Tennant and Smith all had one moment where they lose it. Ecclstone had the bit with the Dalek in the cell, Tennant had the wrath of the time lord at the end of FoB. And Smith had the bit about the "people I love" in a good man goes to war. And looking at these you can see as a great example of RTDs era compared to Moffat.

It was so refreshing to see a male and female sharing so much screen time with no lovey dovey stuff. I think that is why Martha was not one of my favorites. Really question a lot of these ratings. The Daleks in Manhattan episodes really aren't that bad. They have some stupid stuff but the idea of the core idea of one of the Daleks thinking differently and legit actually teaming up with the Dr only to be betrayed by the rest was really cool. Also when the Dalek opens up and absorbs that guy it was really fucking creepy because of the Daleks were shown to be tiny before but this one is a massive squid with huge tentacles.

Underrated some Davies episodes (but not by much). And I mostly like the miniseries. I really liked Planet of the Dead and Waters of Mars. Though I like the very end of the final two so much that it makes up for the Master nonsense that was the rest of those. I even like the part where Tenant says goodbye to all his friends. Definitely hammy and indulgent, but it worked for me.

Voyage of the Damned has that awesome Doctor speech. That alone should get it several points.
"First things first: One: we are going to climb through this ship. B... No, two: We are going to reach the bridge. Three or C: We are going to save the Titanic. And coming in at a very low four, or D, or that little IV in brackets they use in footnotes: Why... Right then. Follow me."
"Hang on a minute. Who put you in charge? And who the hell are you anyway?"
"I'm the Doctor. I'm a Time Lord. I'm from the planet Gallifrey in the constellation of Kasterborous. I am 903 years old and I am the man who is going to save your lives and all 6 billion people on the planet below... You got a problem with that?
    "No."

I think the Fires of Pompeii is worth an appreciation "glance"
it works quite well, it's fast paced, nothing lingers too long, has all round wonderful acting (bar one or two of the antagonists like that old guy) and some amazing characterisation - for example you get to see a lot of Donna's compassion, in fact for the first time(don't forget about how some of the major themes and that impactful ending revolves around that characteristic) along with the very distinctive characters of Caecillius' family; you can tell what kind of person they all are, and the incredibly likeable character of big boy capaldi is very well crafted in order to make us feel so sorry for them when Vesuvius brings their world down, servicing the ending more altogether (and they are given a really nice satisfying ending so our attachment to them does see payoff as we see them all functional, jovial and successful - although this is just a nice little treat as opposed to something of larger substance)
I find the crafted atmosphere and appropriate production value very charming and effective too, you can definitely admire their achievement of a roman setting, with suitably designed villains for the time period (in the same way as the witches in the Shakespeare code)
just a few mental notes after rewatching it curiously - fyi i was in agreement that it was boring until now, since all i remembered was the weird lava people
and bear in mind it isn't all positive: I noted some plotholes like how the aliens of the episode are described as being fragmented into virus-like ash particulates that laid in the magma under Vesuvius, and turn people it infects (those prophets and sisterhood women)slowly into them - but the girl i.e. peter capaldis daughter is still infected with it by the end of the episode, but her rocky arm just disappears
in conclusion, i think its mostly the concept/structure just isn't that creative, in the way that an episode like "Midnight"s really is.

This was super entertaining! I could probably go on about Doctor Who for hours too.
I think Doctor Who (particularly Russell’s era) is one of the few shows where I just love all the episodes unconditionally. I completely agree it can be hit or miss in regards to quality, but for me that’s what makes it fun - it can go from completely dumb and pointless to dark and almost groundbreaking.

9 was expelling the time vortex, 10 was expelling radiation, 11 regenerated differently and so did 12. The Master was slightly different too, but none of them were different enough. It is a bit boring like you say.
